As a former teacher, I got so tired of being accused of "pushing an agenda." I taught US history, so I was also accused of teaching CRT (I wasn't). It's hypocritical to me that a conservative teacher can "push an agenda" and claim protection under the first amendment for their religious beliefs, but a teacher who teaches honest history (not CRT) can't claim that same protection (according to Chrisitan conservatives). I'm so sick of my profession being used as a political battleground, and I'm so sick of Christian nationalists doing all of the things they are accusing eveyrone else of doing (except on a much worse, much larger scale) and claiming religious freedom to protect them from being held accountable for things like treating public school students like crap. Religious bigotry is still bigotry, and we need to stop giving these people a free pass.

Because that would be "artificially changing someone from the 'way god made them'." These same people throw fits about Intersex people like me, and want to treat us the exact opposite of the way they treat trans people. In other words, they will reject a trans woman's identity because she was born with male anatomy, but then they see an Intersex woman who has female anatomy (whether fully or partially) and will insist she is a man despite her identifying as the WAY SHE WAS ASSIGNED AT BIRTH, and claim she was "assigned wrong" and should thus be forced into a male bathroom and male sports. I was a substitute teacher and one day I had a 7th grade music class, and there was a student named Lisa on the class list. I kept calling her name, and no one answered. However, the number of students present matched the number on the class list. After doing this a few times, with everyone staring at me blankly, I finally said, "Where is Lisa and why is no one answering me when i ask you where she is?"
One boy finally said, "Lisa is Larry now. " I did notice one person who hadn't answered when I called names. He was one of those kids that the teacher isn't sure to call "he" or "she" when you meet them. That's actually not unusual! Some kids are just not clearly a boy or a girl, even when they're really little!
So i looked at Larry and i said "Oh! I'm sorry!" Class went on, we had a good day!

Maybe being incorrectly named has been a purposeful action that he and his classmates are just tired of and they refused to play along.
According to the story, when the teacher finally said they were confused and didn't know what was going on, the situation was explained. Which to me indicates that purposeful misgendering has been happening.

From my understanding, there's not really anything in the text itself that forbids people from transitioning genders. Some sects have just decided that trans hatred is part of their practice now because they lost the legal and cultural standing to hate gay people freely. This seems primarily if not solely cultural because critical parts of the New Testament are about disregarding old religious rules and instead following the teaching of Jesus which are largely based on tolerance and compassion for the disenfranchised -- at least that's what my religious family members claim and my limited reading of the Bible. There are also some Muslim-majority countries that force gay men to transition into women so that their behavior cannot be considered gay, and since both religions are closely related it seems that gayness is the problem and not changing genders.

(For context I'm trans and an activist at a minor level.)
The reality is that it's pretty hard to be transphobic without some religious zealotry involved. You may not see it that way but many/most Evangelical churches do and they hold up Christianity as their reasoning. If everyone of a certain religious sect all say they believe something and agree that it is part of their religion, even to the point of justifying bigotry and hate crimes _with their religious beliefs,_ then it isn't cultural. Those ARE the religious beliefs. Christianity is a huge religion with literal thousands of sects. @watsonwrote the argument they make is about "natural order." Or they will lump it into "sexual immorality." These people will just interpret that anyway they want. If they think something is "not natural" or immoral, that is what the Bible is talking about to them. It's proof texting. I would argue that the Ethiopian eunuch is a good passage that can be connected to gender and being accepted into the Kingdom of God. But as much as we might say there can not possibly be anything in the Bible negative about lgbtq people, it's hard to find positives specifically other than passage that talk about God's radical inclusiveness, creativity, bend toward the marginalized, call to love all, etc. It's like know your parents love you and knowing that who ever you bring home as ur future spouse, they will support you. A lot of conservative Christian beliefs are not orginal to the church. They are recent developments. Even the idea that the Bible is inerrant is from the 1980s. Look up Chicago Statement of Biblical Inerrancy. It was a response to the APA removing homosexuality from the DSM in the 70s. They suddenly had to say the Bible has no errors to set the stage for a battle with science and research.

Americans in particular (not referring to you!) are so ignorant of world languages and linguistics in general that it doesn't even occur to them that the rest of the world doesn't even have a concept of gendered language in the same way.

@watsonwrote there really isn't. They lump it all under the English word translations like "sexual immorality" or "unnatural." Those things in the Bible are referring what the author views, maybe even the larger culture at the time, thought was so. Simply put, if we dont consider something abnormal, it's not abnormal. The other interest question to raise is does the Bible speak positively about lgbtq people. A straight up answer to be no. Just like we don't actually find the Bible not talking about guns or smog from cars bc it wasn't an issue then(as we understand it today...) it would obviously not talk about it at all. But all Christians progressive and conservative interpret certain things to apply to today. I would say one of the best passage that could be pro trans might be the passage about the Ethiopian eunuch. Traditionally, it is used to tall about how the message of Jesus is moving out into the world (to black people) I could see his Eunuch identity being significant to also being included in the Kingdom of God. Theologians smarter than me have talk about this. We don't want to read more than there is when we read the Bible but we cannot deny that this is how the guy is described. That might not have meant anything to the author but it could mean something to us. The general practice of doing exactly what the Bible says and doesn't say is not how it is meant to be used. It is not what the Bible is. It's a conversation throughout time. Sometimes one moral concept might be good, at other times, it is morally bad. You can follow the letter of a law while ignoring the heart of it. That is the witness of the entirety of the Bible. We can fall into the system that conservative make up. Progressive can not win on that ground. Again progressives are at a disadvantage bc we always have to say " it is nuanced..." while they say "see, it says it clearly..." when it doesn't. I have led Bible studies with friends who are realizing their churches don't care about things like racism. We had to start from the beginning asking what is the Bible? It's not written by God. Answer this question is like watching sausages being made. Will you come out still honoring it, in the least respecting it? I went through this and I can out with a good amount of respect for how good it can be or how dangerous it can be if in the wrong hands. I find that the movie book of Eli expresses this well...haha

Christianity is very different manifested in different cultures for a reason. Of course they will also reason this away by saying Jesus is abive cultures while ignoring how Jesus being Jewish during Riman occupation has everything to do with his death. It's like this is all too much for them to juggle. I say this as someone who was conservative. I didn't care to know, it was so much that I thought progressive were just trying to confuse me. If someone changed their name from Alex to Paul, would you imagine Paul felt disrespected and ashamed if one person refused to say Paul and kept calling him Alex? What if Paul's name change was brought about because of a significant life event, like a change in his religion? What if he changed it to cope with a traumatic event in his childhood? Every refusal to use Paul's actual name is a jab at his faith or a resurfacing of his painful past experience. Everyone in Paul's life calls him Paul, and this one person using Alex stands out in his refusal and targetting in a public setting. Can you see why this would feel dehumanizing?

They accused her of pushing a “f*g agenda”. 🤬🤦‍♀️I personally I prefer Shelly over Michelle and asked teachers throughout my school years to call me Shelly.
