What do you do when your E-string breaks in a concert?
Violinist Ray Chen takes a practice break (and highly encourages you to take one too) and contemplates what to do when a string breaks during a concert, while exploring the possibilities of defending oneself against that horrifying yet highly exciting scenario. Highly exciting for the audience at least.

I saw him break a string two hours ago at a Seattle Symphony concert and I thought “hasn’t this happened before?” So then I looked it up and found this channel. He handled the situation so well. Made light of it, and made a seamless transition to the concertmaster’s violin. The first violins passed around the violin like hot potato and finally the fourth chair first violin took care of re-stringing. Everything was all good by the second movement and the audience was LIVING for how well this was handled. Moments like these are why I love live music.

I remember my guitar string break in my solo from our jazz band back in highschool. It was the D-string (3rd from top) which would be okay, but only the core snapped, not the winding around it. That meant the d-string overlapped all the lower strings and i couldn't tear it off immediatly. It was the worst feeling ever! Well luckily it was jazz so I could hand the solo over to our bassist who thankfully quickly realised what was up.

suddenly, E string breaks in vivaldi summer 3rd mvt and you have no idea how to play the part with the high A because the E string brakes and you have to handle the high D as well as notes above that, and also the D-high D-high A chord too, you only have 3 strings left
or E string breaks before you even start lalo, the one with the very high E

OMG! It's just struck me. You should be the host of the new Blues Clues. I mean they did start with some other guy, but you should so still smooze the producers for it. Haha....great stuff as always. Thanks!

To be able to switch strings means you have to master both the piece and the violin. Damn, of course!

You could theoretically get blinded, depending on how the string piece hits your eye.... most likely though you would not lose complete sight on that eye. Even better to be operated upon rather quick by a specialist since pulling a needle-like structure out of a small thing like an eye might result in more damage than the incident itself.
Don’t sweat it, though, while it is possible it is not very likely.
