    Just a small correction on the physics. It doesn't really rely on contacting the top of the ball, but rather to have the direction of force to be missing the center of the ball in the back-top direction. That is how you can hit it upwards and still get top spin. The way I do it is to make the final arm extension much later so that my arm is still extending as I hit the ball. To learn, it can be exaggerated as shot put up the back of the ball. Then you bring it back towards a normal arm whip swing, making sure your full extension is after the contact point. The slight upward force on the back to top of the ball (missing the center) creates the spinning force and the finger extension / snap directs all that force forwards and down. In the end, you have what looks like a normal swing but with just a slight difference. in the extension point.

    Thank you for the video! I couldn’t add top spin to my ball and everybody was telling me to simply snap my wrist.. it didn’t work so very happy to finally have a correct explanation! :) ( love the scientific evidence too )

      For sure! Snapping the wrist can be a good cue but it just doesn't work or click for everyone.

    Wrist snap creates more force on the ball like the end of the whip plus added downward direction, e.g. spiking. I would argue that on spiking hard, top spin is mostly irrelevant. Serving top spin is created by hitting the top half of the ball with a lot of contact surface (palm) plus tossing the ball with a lot of forward rotation to add to the top spin. You can even do top spin serves without wrist snap and a bad contact on the ball with a good spin toss. That‘s what I teach and that’s also found in the literature. Other ways are also appreciated, if they work. I would argue that you’re not incorrect but a little incomplete.

    As someone who coached this sport for over a quarter century, you have to clarify the "top of the ball" comment. If someone is say, 5 feet from the net and doesn't jump out of the gym, making contact on the top of the ball will just drive it down into the net. The contact point changes as the distance from the net does. I get on players who continually "cover" the top of the ball. Far more attacks actually go up before they go down. Some players get stuck on thinking they must hit at a downward angle, hand to floor. Just saying "hit the top of the ball" is insufficient.

    nothing any coach has said to me helped me do topspin until I had my own way of thinking about it. I position everything like im going to float the ball halfway between the bottom and the middle of the ball but then snap my wrist or just create an angle with my hand upon contact. This is what led to my breakthrough. Do you think that is essentially correct or not?

      "wrist snap" isn't a terrible cue, but it just doesn't work for everyone and doesn't really explain how the top spin happens

    I have a question though - for a standing topspin serve, if you’re not contacting the ball above the net but still on top of the ball how do you get it to go far enough to get over the net?

    • @volleyball.university
      @volleyball.university  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Just got a new camera for higher quality footage. Yo answer your question, you would still make actual contact on top of the ball, but you hit it at an upward angle so it can go over the net. The more speed you can add, the less "up" you have to hit it.

    • @volleyball.university
      @volleyball.university  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@juridittrich6396 for sure! Cues are just words you use to get someone to take a certain action. For example, to teach the hand placement for platform passing to beginners I say/cue "pancake, pancake, sausage sausage" which helps then place their hands on each other and thumbs together. Wrist snap is easier to "do" than to teach hit the top of the ball and angle down as you make contact. There's a reason why the term has been used for so many years haha

    As a fellow vball coach, I'm gonna say that "just hitting the top half of the ball" is wrong. If you're standing at the service line and hitting the top of the ball and snapping, it's never going to make it over the net, that's simple physics and geometry. You actually need to hit the bottom half of the ball to provide the arc it needs to clear the net with topspin.

    • @volleyball.university
      @volleyball.university  ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I made a video on this as well. In that case you'd be hitting the ball at an upward trajectory and hitting the top of the ball at the same time. It really just comes down to semantics but I agree with you 🙌🏼

    Topspin is created by hitting in an upward motion. So from low to high. When looking at your demo. The ball doesn’t spin, it’s only spinning because you spun the ball before you hit it. And your contact is not creating any more spin(if anything you are creating backspin). Look at the beginning of the video when you served the ball. You hit it upwards. That’s why you had so much spin on the ball.

    • @volleyball.university

      I had to hit it upwards because I was serving over the net. Are hitters hitting low to high when they bounce a ball 10ft line with top spin?
