finger lickin', finger pickin good!!! the people at this concert didn't know they were privileged to be at one of the greatest live performances ever!!
The whole alchemy live show was off the scale amazing, the band so tight and really on the money, and some of these performances outshine the studio cut by far. Surely to god Knopfler deserves his place in any top 10 greatest guitarists of all time.
I will never see such a Technically Demanding Guitar piece being played by a musician that looks like he is sitting down and Chillin'. Each Band Member is a master of their Craft. 🇦🇺
When I heard Industrial Disease for the first time I purchased Love Over Gold and then I heard Telegraph Road. What an awesome song. Dire Straits are one my favourite bands. ❤
This whole live concert album is flawless. Have to play Sultans of Swing and Tunnel of Love from Alchemy Concert to complete 3 of the greatest guitar solos, drumming performances and keyboard contributions ever produced by a band. Romeo and Juliet is beautiful but different to those 3 then there’s Two Young Lovers and Twisting by the Pool as super fun old fashioned rock. Underrated but less energetic songs but still great musically are Private Investigations, Love over Gold, Theme from Local Hero and Once Upon a time in the West. And that’s just this live album ( Dire Straits live is without peer musically ) without even getting into Brothers in Arms. Easily a week.
Cheers 🍻 to your great reaction...now let your goosebumps journey continues and your brains blown into a kazillion pieces along that journey with: Sultans of Swing - Live Alchemy ; Tunnel of Love - live at Wembley 85 ; Brothers in Arms - live On The Night 93...and so on....the master piece list of DS is almost endless 🍻😄
I’m a huge Dire Straits fan but I prefer their studio albums to their live performances because Mark changes up the music so much when playing live. They were never a “fashion” band. They played their music the way they (Mark) wanted it. I’m discovering that most of us didn’t realize just how great the music was that we grew up with. Dire Straits is one of the best selling SACD format bands if not the best!
@@stevenewcomer8837 "Mark changes up the music so much when playing live." You understand that ability is what defines a group, more than good recordings, yes?
@@RideAcrossTheRiver I always judged a band that could play their music as perfect as the studio, but there are exceptions. I’ve seen a lot of concerts where the band sucked in concert and I saw plenty of great cover bands that played their songs better.
You mustn't forget this was 1983, 40 years ago. Mr Knopfler as you probably know, wrote the words, music for all instruments, and he always gave them time at the fore, especially the piano players, arranged it sang it and played his guitar as only he can, all of this masterpiece is the genius called Mark Knopfler. I never get tired of this track. I'm 76 and can remember when they were popular many many many years ago. I can't comprehend how he managed it, thats why he's a genius.....
This is really excellent. Isn’t it! People talk about “tight bands” when they’re live, and I have those in my head that seem to exemplify that; Rush, Yes, Genesis, Queen, Pink Floyd, Supertramp, and Dire Straits, among other top bands.
This is a complete masterpiece and is quite possibly the best live performance I’ve ever seen, period. Absolutely every musician formed a cohesive unit that fed off of one another to create this flawless masterpiece. Mark is definitely a guitar god however the stars of this track are the drums and especially the keyboards. I teared up a couple of times due to how beautiful the transitions were (along with Mark’s storytelling). It’s a shame we don’t have this caliber of music anymore and I would sell my soul to attend this concert. Truly.
Dire Straits just released a total live album. 4 full concerts. On the night concert this song I feel was played even better. Rest in the concert is off the charts. I just hope they release the full visual concert online.
Absolutely loved this song when it came out, but because of radio being the media of the day, it was rarely played - because of its length. Somehow, kind of forgot about it, didn’t hear it again for about 25 years - life happened, shit happened. Can’t remember where it popped up again, probably in a TH-cam suggestion. Put it on the home stereo one night for the kids to hear - then discovered my wife also loved it too and also hadn’t heard it for decades. Will never forget about it again! Without a doubt, one of the greatest rock songs ever!
Most under-rated man in rock and roll history! The guitar….the storytelling….the vocal style….the epic live performances! Knopfler has also been putting out solo albums the last 30 years. Would love for you to react to Speedway At Nazareth with Emmylou Harris. Just awesome!
I would classify DS music as rock fusion. Aside from MK’s lyrics, vocals and guitar, this and many DS tracks are distinguished for composition, musicality and creativity, and while MK deserves all the credit accruing to him, you don’t pull this off without tremendous collaboration of all the performers. Consider fast forwarding 2+ decades to sample MK A Night in London, “Cannibals.” Still got it!
Knopfler is supposed to be releasing something this year, it would be good to get some stuff with gilmour my two favourite guitarists. Mark played a few times with chet Atkins and often played with Eric Clapton, there are many fantastic live performances for a Knopfler DS week.
I love the band's performance on the Alchemy show, but I can't bear the crowd audio with the out-of-time clapping, whooping, and whistling every time there's a mellow lull in the music. Somebody must have agreed with me, as when this live recording of Telegraph Road was included on a compilation a few years later, much of the crowd audio was lowered in the mix.
Alchemy is the best live ever ! Telegraph Road is my favorite track, but the most amazing is the sound engineers work... Sound and mix are epic (1983 !!!) ! Very nice reaction, thanks ❤
Wow, that was the whole track! Most of the time shortened and/or edited versions of "Telegraph Road" appear on albums, singles, and compilation albums too. Bravo! Thank you Sean, Chris, Alex and George!

I totally agree with @mcupis. After listening to all kinds of music genres for 50 years this is as good as it gets. Real musicians on stage, the best guitarist, keyboard, drum and maybe bass player too all together performing based on a song Mark wrote while reading Hamsun. The story of Detroit in a way, what more can you ask for in a song?
Don't forget the organ. That was the warm blanket underneath al. So it was not only Alan Clark on the piano. So Alan Clark is sitting on the right of the drummer. Money for Nothing - Concert For Monserrat. Featuring Sting, Phil Collins and Eric Clapton Also, Rockpalast LIVE 1979 it’s almost a pick-em but I prefer Wild West End. Really enjoy watching guys, keep up the great work.
Hey guys love your channel. MK is my fave artist of all time followed his whole career and he's still going. Once Upon A Time In The West from the the same concert, or Brothers In Arms and Calling Elvis from DS Live "On The Night" 1993 are my favorite performances. The guitar in BIA is jaw dropping good from Mark's Pensa Suhr. Cheers from Australia 👍🎸🎸🎸
Have you heard the collaboration between Mark Knoffler and Chet Atkins ? The album is called neck and neck ( a bit country ) but Chet Atkins said to him " dont make me look bad sonny " ???
Dire Straits were NEVER naff boys. I've seen these guys live in Oz a number of times... they were tight, they had fun and the gigs always went on forever! They always delivered the goods. Forget the forgotten hairdo heavy metal wankers, they were not in this league.
Tunnel of Love , Sydney 1986 is another gem and in my opinion the best ,ive version. Excellent sound quality and MK's solo at the end is truly outstanding.
Some people are very narrow minded when it comes to music - this is one of my favourite live performances, and Iron Maiden's 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner' flight 666 version is right up there with it in terms of both performance and musicianship
There's interview a year or so before LOG came out where Mark talks about wanting to make a double LP. He made 5 songs and then said sod it that'll do lol.
I was an early adopter of Dire Straits. Sultans of Swing; and the rest of the Brothers in Arms album was on high rotation on my frightfully yellow, stackable, Sanyo turntable. Telegraph Road, lyrically, to me, is Dire Straits most well written song. It's an album track, not for radio; so, it is fantastic to see this performance getting some love here. Is there a Dire Straits/Knophler week coming? if so, I am there for that.
This must rank as one of the all time best live performances or concerts, or just a great show! #markknopfler is - in my opinion - one of the top 5 greatest guitarists ever. This was my 1st live album purchased and remains #1
Fabulous, always. May I suggest Sultans of Swing and Tunnel of Love, from both Alchemy Live concert and the 1985 live performance, "Wembley Does The Walk, as well as Telegraph Road. For a bit of fun, toss in "Walk of Life" from either or both, and add another live gem, the 'Walk' with Paul Franklin's fabulous pedal steel guitar outro, recorded live in Basel, Switzerland in 1992. Mark and Dire Straits made music I never get tired of, and Mark is still "masterworking" classics like, "Sailing to Philadelphia," and "Speedway At Nazareth," - two more incredible creations. Thanks, guys.
Dire Straits put on the best concert I've been to. Brothers in Arms tour, 4th March 1986, at Athletic Park in Wellington, NZ. Around 50,000 people... fantastic night. The studio albums are superb, but live is something else.
Massive track, isn’t it? They were uncool from the rock crowd, unhip for the new wave fans, they just didn’t fit anywhere into the landscape and yet they still managed to become one of the biggest bands ever in spite of so much of their ‘shortcomings’. The arc of their albums is also really interesting to analyse and see how they developed in sound and matured in the writing. I’m already knee deep with Chris in putting the week together and looking forward to presenting it when it’s ready. Stay tuned!!
Hi Sean! Very much looking forward to the Dire Straits curation! I hope you'll have plenty of the "Making Movies" album, that one is my favorite Dire Straits album. Alex asked everyone to put down their favorite tracks, here goes: "Sultans of Swing," "Lady Writer," "Once Upon a Time in the West," "Tunnel of Love," "Skateaway," "Expresso Love," "Private Investigations", (would've said "Telegraph Road"), "Twisting by the Pool," "So Far Away," "Money for Nothing" . . . ok, I'll stop there, lol!
@@brianparsa7794 I hope so too, MM’s a great album. There’s a lot of ground to cover from their humble beginnings to massive successes, so it’ll be tricky to find the right balance. They could easily have two weeks devoted to them, maaaaybe even three if it got into very deep cuts. I played their albums incessantly for a couple of decades. Got a little weary of them after a while but we got a decent record player a while back and I dug out my old vinyl. They’ve been getting healthy amounts of rotation ever since. :D
Saw DS is Brisbane at QE2 stadium (40K+ people) on Brothers in Arms tour 1985 and again at Brisbane Entertainment Centre (13K) in 1992 - both are seared into my memory as two of the greatest concerts
@@CoastPropertyBuyers Must have been the same tour. We were at the very front of the outdoor concert and the driving bass from 'private investigations' was like a punch in the chest. One of the highlights of my youth!
They are a local band and I was lucky enough to see them live for the Making Movies album - one of the best live groups of all time - so technically musically talented.
Mark definitely gets such a pure and clean sound out of his Strat/s. He would be one of the cleanest rock guitarists of all time. Plus Alan Clark shines on the keys, just like Terry Williams did on the drums in Sultans of Swing in this amazing concert. Definitely a concert for the ages like Pink Floyd Pulse and John Farnham's Classic Jack with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
Ice job gentleman, welcome to this cult classic going down the Telegraph road. Such a freaking gem and this live performance is FIRE🔥 Mark is easy one of the greatest song writers and virtuoso on the guitar in our time. Totally dope! Wow!
Hi there. Many of us progrockers liked Dire Staits..They where not really prog..but they certainly had som bits of old Nice prog in there songwriting. Dire straits one of the greatest bands in The 70-80. Thank you guys.
Dire straits truly went on just before Queen, during live Aid, and was sooooo happy they stayed true to most of the movie!!! Mark was always amazing!! Telegraph road and Lorax by Dr.suess were staple songs and books in my house to my children for the stories!!! 😊
ALCHEMY is without a doubt a Masterpiece of an album, for a Live album the quality of sound is brilliant. The entire album is back to back brilliance I have the Album still on Vinyl as well as CD but I always go for the vinyl first just something about that sound as the needle drops. Thanks guys what a great way to start off 2024 with you, the only thing that could have made it better was you showcasing an Aussie classic 😁😁😁😁😮😮🤔🤔😁😁 Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘❤❤❤❤🎵🎵🎶🎶🎵🎵
You can pick any of their live performances and you would still get your money's worth. Sultans of Swing, Telegraph Road and Tunnel of Love are the longer epical ones, but even the slow ones are a testament to the musicianship of this fantastic band.
The solo for Tunnel of Love has a great build and my favorite bit is when he throws to the long piano runs just before the finish. At a time when we look to the brilliant technician guitarists - Van Halen, Satriani, Malmsteen, Edge - MK’s fingerstyle more than holds its own.
Thank you TH-cam for this stratospheric masterpiece!! I adore Sultans of swing but OMG..this is better..it can't be better than that. In highschool i was leader singer and guitar player in a band-we practised over and over again and yet was hard to perform live.I fully trust my musical ear-not a single note was lost or bad in this legendary performance. Music brings such wonderful feelings to soul.
I've really enjoyed listening to this masterpiece with your reaction; i've never felt so much heat in my bones while listening to this tune like I did today; it's just incredible.
This will always be in my top 5 performances of all time. Everything about it is perfection. Tunnel Of Love from the same concert is just as good! Interesting news about Gilmour you have there. He normally records in his own studio so I suspect it's a guest performance, but I'm excited to find out what he's up to.
Alchemy Tour. Apolo Theater. London. 1983. Mark Knopfler - guitar. UK Hal Limdes - guitar. USA John Illsley - bass. UK Alan Clark - keyboards. UK Terry Williams - drums. UK
Gents, you mention MTV so maybe check out dIRE sTRAITS homage to MTV with song MONEY FOR NOTHING One top Guitar Riff that everbody has heard somewhere. 🇦🇺
There are great song writers, guitarists, story tellers, and singers in the world. But Mark is one of the few that is all of them together in one fantastic package. Check out “Tunnel of Love” live at Wembley Arena 1985 “Private Investigations” live on Alchemy. “Speedway at Nazareth” live Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris version. “Brothers in Arms” live A Night in London, And of course “Sultans of Swing” live Alchemy.
Just wish I could apply a crowd filter in the quiet sections to remove the muppets who somehow believe that their shouts are more important than the piano. The Love Over Gold album seemed perfect and yet the versions of the songs on Alchemy added an even better energy and quality through the extended solos.
In a live performance the crowd are part of the experience. And bands feed off it. You might as well be watching a movie of the concert without the audience.
19:30 - yup I lived in the UK in the mid 80s, loved their music but never got stirred to go watch them live. You think life goes on forever and the bands of your youth would be around forever too - but it doesnt happen. Thank goodness for this music album video that captures arguably the greatest rock live performance of all time by any band. And this song was the encore - after 2 hours of playing!
Easily my favourite Dire Straits track - and I love some much of their stuff. From the album 'love over gold' this was the opening track of 2 songs on the A side (5 in total on the album) and at 14.30 mins still wasn't long enough. Just a masterpiece.
This is peak Dire Straits… The rhythm guitarist is a guy called Hal Lindes, who ended up playing lead for Fergal Sharkey… He obviously had to defer to Mr Knopfler, but he got one song at every concert to show his chops… Check out “Two Young Lovers” from the same gig…
Gents, seems to me this is the first time you heard Telegraph Road. Written by Mark during a road trip in the US. Forget the location of the Telegraph Road. dIRE sTRAITS are on my Car Play list for 40 years now and really soothing to listen to the whole Program including Private Investigations, Tunnel of Love etc... Thanks for the Review today, I love seeing the effortless Guitar picking style of Mark.
It was about Telegraph Road in Michigan, which runs about 70 miles North/South. It was also partly inspired by him reading Growth Of The Soil at the same time as he was going down that road in a tour bus.
This song was written about the actual Telegraph Road (US 23) that runs along the Detroit border in Michigan. While it was referencing the state of Detroit, it could be a out the rise and fall of any large city.
@sean-the-other-one, I used to have to travel Telegraph Road to and from work everyday. That commute was more stressful than my job. I am so glad I don't have to go there now. I have not been near Telegraph Road or Detroit for more than twenty years. I am less than 45 minutes away from downtown.
As good as the Love Over Gold studio version is, I will ALWAYS prefer the ALCHEMY version. They were firing that night. Check out Terry Williams! Looks so much more engaged than he did in Rockpile, and I'll put money that it is not drugs! When I was 15 I Hobbytexed (sort of pens for drawing permanently on fabric) the Brett Whitely arrows onto a white T-shirt because of this VHS. I got shitted on and had to explain it even after BITA came out. Didn't care. Wore the Tshirt to holes. The sound quality with the overloading of the PA was apologised for on the album cover. I have used wrist bands to protect my wrist from bits on the bass that wear holes in your arm, and even powerlifting wrist wraps to do the same and support my weakness when shredding with a pick on a bass guitar. These days I wrap a bandanna around my right wrist when slapping double bass, and it helps support on long sets too. If it's good enough for Steve Earle, it's good enough for me.
I was at this gig and sort of thought it may be a bit boring, it wasn't! This was the encore and they played like this for over 2 hours Sultans of Swing is also awesome! The whole band were utterly brilliant! We thought, at the time, that they weren't going to play Telegraph Road, its so complicated. The star for me, was Terry Williams on the drums, superb, even better on Sultans 40 years later its still possibly the best gig, musically, and I've seen Genesis, Pink Floyd and The Stones
I saw them 1991 on every street tour Wembley arena. I was 18 it’s still musically the best gig I’ve ever been too by a country mile, and I had a great time dancing around for the whole gig, the crowd were a fairly boring bunch though.
I was and am a metalhead, but I have always rated DS, ever since the proprietor of a local record shop persuaded me to listen to their eponymous first album. And this is one of my favourite Dire Straits songs.
I saw them 2 nights in a row back in early 90's. They were great , however I could have got near the same if I put one of their CDs on my stereo system in a dark room and crank the volume up.
Simply the greatest live performance of the greatest song by the greatest band in rock history. I don't care if you disagree, you are wrong.
Ha ha
I don’t disagree, the band at the peak of its power and a solo that stands alone for expression and execution.
No arguments from me. Song is a gem.
Yeah it’s my favourite as well.

Yep, I’m on it, Len.
Kicking ideas around with Chris at the moment.
18:50 that was the best and most accurate summary of what the fuck just happend ever! BOOM.... got me in stitches
On Topic of MTV - Money for nothing was an iconic video
They're such a trip! Even my mum enjoyed Dire Straights, they never even come close to disappointing.🥰
This must rank as one of the all time best live performances or concerts, or just a great show! #markknopfler is - in my opinion - one of the top 5 greatest guitarists ever. This was my 1st live album purchased and remains #1
Really enjoyed this reaction. I am a long-time fan of Dire Straits and was thrilled to see this. Happy New Year
Same to you!
Iv never thought of this as a pop song , this is as symphony.
Iv heard this hundreds of times and it never gets old
Fabulous, always.
Yes. I went to their concert in Sydney during the same tour. Of of my all time favourite concerts. Just an amazing band live!

I hope so too, MM’s a great album.
Awaiting Keenly.
Best reaction ever, thank you guys for commenting Dire geniuses
Absolutely one of the best tracks we have seen on this channel. Blew our minds
Saw DS is Brisbane at QE2 stadium (40K+ people) on Brothers in Arms tour 1985 and again at Brisbane Entertainment Centre (13K) in 1992 - both are seared into my memory as two of the greatest concerts
Saw them at Sydney Entertainment Centre same tour in ‘85. Just. Epic!
@@CoastPropertyBuyers Must have been the same tour. We were at the very front of the outdoor concert and the driving bass from 'private investigations' was like a punch in the chest. One of the highlights of my youth!
Hello Thamesmen. Please also check Sultans of Swing also Alchemy Live.
Will do
They are a local band and I was lucky enough to see them live for the Making Movies album - one of the best live groups of all time - so technically musically talented.
one of my farourite bands of the late 70s an 80s great music! cheers from the Netherlands
SOoooooooooo Good....
Thanks for the info!
Dire straits truly went on just before Queen, during live Aid, and was sooooo happy they stayed true to most of the movie!!! Mark was always amazing!!
Telegraph road and Lorax by Dr.suess were staple songs and books in my house to my children for the stories!!! 😊
Tunnel of Love/Wembley 85 has an incredible solo by Knopfler. Thanks for giving this fantastic band some love. Looking forward to more. Subscribed. 😊
Thanks for the sub!
ALCHEMY is without a doubt a Masterpiece of an album, for a Live album the quality of sound is brilliant. The entire album is back to back brilliance I have the Album still on Vinyl as well as CD but I always go for the vinyl first just something about that sound as the needle drops. Thanks guys what a great way to start off 2024 with you, the only thing that could have made it better was you showcasing an Aussie classic 😁😁😁😁😮😮🤔🤔😁😁
Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘❤❤❤❤🎵🎵🎶🎶🎵🎵
When bands were given freedom to be creative and able to write great songs
This will always be in my top 5 performances of all time. Everything about it is perfection. Tunnel Of Love from the same concert is just as good!
Interesting news about Gilmour you have there. He normally records in his own studio so I suspect it's a guest performance, but I'm excited to find out what he's up to.
Alchemy Tour. Apolo Theater. London. 1983.
Mark Knopfler - guitar. UK
Hal Limdes - guitar. USA
John Illsley - bass. UK
Alan Clark - keyboards. UK
Terry Williams - drums. UK
Lindes ☺
Total banger! Never gets old. Mark will.melt your face off!
Gents, you mention MTV so maybe check out dIRE sTRAITS homage to MTV with song MONEY FOR NOTHING
One top Guitar Riff that everbody has heard somewhere.
Mark kept playing this song through his entire solo career until we was literally unable to physically play it. His magnus opus no doubt at all.
Just wish I could apply a crowd filter in the quiet sections to remove the muppets who somehow believe that their shouts are more important than the piano. The Love Over Gold album seemed perfect and yet the versions of the songs on Alchemy added an even better energy and quality through the extended solos.
The crowd throughout are a pain in the arse. They ruin it for me even though I love the track.
Yeh. Some Producer believes that it ADDS to the Live feel. Wanker ! 🇦🇺
You got me at Thames TV. Loved watching that with you guys. Best live song ever imo
One of the greatest jams ever
A total Masterpiece. Thanks for your funny reactions ;) You sure love music.
This is peak Dire Straits…
The rhythm guitarist is a guy called Hal Lindes, who ended up playing lead for Fergal Sharkey…
He obviously had to defer to Mr Knopfler, but he got one song at every concert to show his chops…
Check out “Two Young Lovers” from the same gig…
When you want to say something, say it.... With lyrics, guitar... He is GOAT of storytelling with voice and fingers
If it's good enough for Steve Earle, it's good enough for me.
been on my playlist for years
I was at this gig and sort of thought it may be a bit boring, it wasn't!
This was the encore and they played like this for over 2 hours
Sultans of Swing is also awesome!
The whole band were utterly brilliant!
We thought, at the time, that they weren't going to play Telegraph Road, its so complicated.
The star for me, was Terry Williams on the drums, superb, even better on Sultans
40 years later its still possibly the best gig, musically, and I've seen Genesis, Pink Floyd and The Stones
I saw them 1991 on every street tour Wembley arena. I was 18 it’s still musically the best gig I’ve ever been too by a country mile, and I had a great time dancing around for the whole gig, the crowd were a fairly boring bunch though.
I was 18 at this gig too!
Sultans warmed the crowd up a bit, they were slightly boring@@samlawrence4670
Doesn't get any better than this. Also - John McEnroe is not only a tennis legend but a pretty good musician! 😉
Newest subscriber. Nice job. More Dire straits please. Nobody sounds like them and they kill it live. Obviously.
Welcome 🙏
I was and am a metalhead, but I have always rated DS, ever since the proprietor of a local record shop persuaded me to listen to their eponymous first album. And this is one of my favourite Dire Straits songs.
Uma obra prima. Perfeita
Exactly
I saw them 2 nights in a row back in early 90's. They were great , however I could have got near the same if I put one of their CDs on my stereo system in a dark room and crank the volume up.
Knopfler never uses distortion so l think a lot of critics thought he was not as dimensional as he might have been.
