    Sometimes I need to take a break from Mr. Kilmer's videos, unfortunately. The Toyota Sienna is only offered in AWD, as a hybrid, & with a CVT. We all know that if ANY OTHER manufacturer made a vehicle like that, he'd have nothing but negative things to say about those things alone. Regarding the Sienna, it has a CVT with AWD on a rather heavy vehicle. I'm unsure if that's much of a winning combination long term. I personally own a 2019 Honda Odyssey EX-L nearing 100,000 miles, and during the buying process I test drove a Sienna. To confirm what others say, it's extremely sluggish. Now that wasn't the only deal breaker, but when loaded enough with the whole family and luggage (including a roof box full of things) to make it squat a little, the Odyssey provides superior agility on the highway for passing and acceleration. To each their own I guess, dropping $1500 to change the timing belt and water pump every 100,000 miles shouldn't be considered a deal breaker especially knowing that the 3.5L engine is in the Odyssey, Pilot, Passport, & Ridgeline, it's a very solid engine to say the least.
    My biggest question though is if the transmission was serviced properly and if the previous owners towed with it. Several of Mr. Kilmer's videos say to NOT flush the transmission, but merely do a fluid exchange.

  • @tomtork1285
    @tomtork1285 16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +15

    Scotty, Maybe you should do more reseasrch on the 2014 Honda Odyssey before you actually make a video on it since you are incorrect about multiple things that you express and point out in your video. As a honda tech for more than 20 years, the "LDW" Lane departure warning system will only operate at speeds of 40MPH to 90MPH. Anyone watching this video can see that when you tell your viewers that the system is not working now you are actually only going about 35MPH which can be seen with what is displayed on the speedometer. Then you say it is working and your viewers will see that you are now over 40MPH which the system will then be Active. Again, like many other videos you say how bad the transmissions are on these vehicles. You are correct that Hondas are know for transmission issues on certain models and certain years. The model here, "2014" which I will call 2011-2017 due to basically the same body type(Style) with cosmetic and other small changes from 2011-2017. Transmission wise these years had very good transmissions and I have only seen a few replaced which were mostly due to lack of maintenance where the fluid was never changed properly and the torque converter would deteriorate and clutch debris would throughout causing failure. The problem with these transmissions is they are not serviced soon enough. The Honda DW-1 Transmission Fluid loses its Ant-Slip Properties too soon before Maintenance intervals can be reached therefore causing torque converter slippage resulting in torque converter failure. I would say in over 90% of the cases where there is torque converter shutter that if the fluid was to be flushed completely the condition can be resolved but would recommend to change the fluid every 10 to 15000 miles after to extend the life of the transmission and its components.. If there is excessive amounts of debris in the fluid on the first flush I would say it is too late and then I would recommend a transmission. In over 20 years with Honda I have only seen a few transmissions replaced in 2011-2017 odysseys and I would say no more than 10 torque converters replaced. As for being in one of the highest volume shops with over 200 vehicles a day in our service department I would have to honestly disagree with your assessment in this video.

      Changing the fluid every 10-15k (not 50k-100k) miles tells you the transmission is not solidly made. Most owners either do not know that or can’t keep up with such maintenance.

    • @bn880
      @bn880 12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +2

      Having to change tranny fluid every 15k M is a clear cut case of a bad transmission or car with transmission problems. That's basically what he's saying, even if you list out the details of it starting with the TC, it is what it is. If someone didn't change fluid for 150k M and the interval is 80k M in the manuals, then yes you'd have a point.

    The rubber belts are much cheaper to replace compared to the timing chain. So to compare a big engine like Honda's 3,5L. V6 and yes that is a big engine as the overwhelming majority of drivetrains in Europe are little 4 cylinders. So changing a belt on an engine as big as that would be something close to 3,5 times cheaper compared to changing a timing chain. In eastern Europe we hold the the timing belt in high regard and view the direct injection system as an enemy of the automotive industry.

Older Toyotas were universally durable however Toyota or not i wouldn't risk going past 100k km. with my own vehicle. May be you could stretch their longevity to 120-150k km. but the risk is not worth the reward. Honestly this mentality is pretty common in a notable southern European country where they pretty much rarely change their vehicles' consumables (oil, filters, belt/chains, water pump) because their vehicle was new or because it was a Toyota.

    I started off with a 2006 Odyssey touring and traded it for a brand new 2011 EXL with entertainment and put 200k miles on it with the original transmission. I had no issues. I treaded it in for another brand new 2022 Odyssey Touring. Never had any problems with any of my Odyssey vans. I hated the 2016 Odyssey because it came with expensive run-flat tires that could only be purchased from the Honda Dealership. Honda's are great product.

    Sienna's still had limited production most of 2024. That is the one and only reason Honda Outsold the Toyota. 2025's now being poduced seem to be back to more normal production numbers. Watch the Honda tank in 2025.

    Toyota's problems are closely related to their dealer's network, their recent alliance with Bring My Wallet, and their new management and policy direction; the company is now focused on their Lexus division, with prices Toyota Owners cannot pay. If anyone wants the best transmissions , the only option is the GR Corolla which comes with a 6 speed manual or their new 8 speed automatic transmission; only the most expensive Toyota Crown comes with the 6 speed automatic transmission as well as some Lexus models; the only Toyota Hybrid with the safety of also having a conventional starter and alternator in case of a Hybrid System failure, is the upcoming 2025 Lexus 700h SUV, the most expensive of all, not even the Prius has it yet. No matter is the original Toyota Hybrid in production since Toyota started with Hybrid technology.

    Ahhh, I don’t think it will kill Toyotas future, Toyota will be fine after the Trump administration is back in office and thinks get back to somewhat normal , what car manufacturers need to learn is that not everyone wants or needs a loaded vehicle, they quit making small pick up trucks and cheap econo cars , instead of pressing electric vehicles they should have kei cars ,trucks , vans they don’t burn a lot of fuel , less fuel less pollution 👈🏼 they don’t build them because there’s no profit margin plus they would have to up grade them for EPA standards and safety , I think American car manufacturers need to start rethinking as a lot of manufacturing is going to be coming back as built USA .
