The refs in the last Finals game were so pitiful many people will tune out. Terrible mismanagement. Shareholders of any public company would demand she be replaced last year.
How much money was left on the table just by barely marketing CC? To answer your question...No, I'm not surprised. Make all the wrong choices before you make the right one.
The commissioner is incredibly bad. I was a college basketball fan and followed Clark into the WNBA. Engleberts handling of the Clark situation might be one of the worst marketing blunders of all time. I don't want her anywhere near the CBA negotiations next fall. I'd hateto have the Fever to lose Kelly Krauskopf but I think she'd make a great commissioner.
Why in the heck is Engelberg still the commissioner? She has no idea what she is doing from a financial stand point. She was also the person who allowed the referee and physical abuses to the league’s cash cow CC. She should be fired before the league is ruined.
Holy fuck. This is such a tough nut to get out of. No investor will sell their stake to wnba and even if they would wnba doesn't have that much money right now.
Not surprised that Commissioner Englebert failed to see the future potential of the WNBA and was dragged into the politics on both the NBA and WNBA. The outstanding rapaciousness of WNBA players demanding huge pay rises out of losses doesn’t surprise me either. A new Commissioner for both franchises is an obvious next step.
The more eyes the WNBA has on it, the more people there are to see that at any given time, during any WNBA game, there are an average of 3.6 women on the court who are actually good at basketball. The rest are auditioning for Failarmy.

Funny you should say that. Never understood what the NBA was doing when they got into Women's Basketball and basically put the ABL out of business (the competing league run by women). Seems like a large portion of the NBA owners lost their taste for it. Remember Women's tennis did not flourish until they broke away from the mens tour with Virginia Slims. Then the slams figured it out that there was money to be made and now they women make as much in the slams as the Mem. I doubt that would have happened if they had not broken away from the Mens tour.

I don’t understand why she is still the commissioner as she has not improved the league since she started started on that role since 2019. Unless she has some sort of a hold over the CEO of NBA Adam Silver who is the one recommended her to be the commissioner in the first place. I don’t think Silver wanted to WNBA to progress as this is their tax write off for years. Just my 2 cents!
For at least the tenth time from me, Engelbert should have been fired half way through last season for her continuous lack of leadership whether it was the horridness officiating, the constant mugging of the W’s biggest draw in Caitlin, and terrible marketing! This clown like many corporate eggheads, completely misses the point! You Catlin Clark fans are weirdos , and yet you CC fans compare her to Michael Jordan? He played in one of the most physical era of the NBA (1980's -1990's) and did not complain about it. This is what the WNBA is today, but you CC fans don't see it, because you are too much or a fanboy.
You can't make something out of nothing. To be honest the WNBA product sucks. The referees suck and the players aren't that skilled. It's simply not worth watching. While Caitlin Clark is a phenomenal player she is not going to be able to carry the entire league on her shoulders.
The criticism is not entirely clear: Is it that the NBA didn't pay more up front in 2002, instead of turning to a separate financial group? Is it that they (WNBA and/or NBA) haven't bought out the latter? What should have been done to prevent that 16% going elsewhere is never stated.
@rogermatthews2760 I had a correction in the video but seems like everyone has missed this. I said in video that they took 75 million in 2002 but they actually occurred in 2022. I put a note in video correcting this. Overall, I don't think they should have done the capital raise in the first place. Very unclear what the money was used for. Marketing and media platform? They gave away 16% of their business for that? Investors will make all their money back by 2027 so this deal turned out to be really really bad IMO. I could be argued that they did not know the media writes would explode but is always a dangerous game giving away a piece of your business. Now the entire things seems like a hot mess. Some NBA owners don't want to be involved at all and are frustrated and will look to push down or not increase salaries. As well they have a 3rd party taking away 16% of their revenue.
Instead of promoting Caitlin clark who was the main draw of the wnba and brought in the spotlight and millions of fans/viewers to the wnba, she worked hard instead to diminish Clark to promote the other players that never made an impact to making the wnba have more fans and viewers in the first place.
You don't grow the league through division. That's how you destroy league and team cohesion. You graduated college with some kind of degree in the business arena, and you don't know that? The league improved becsuse of Caitlin Clark. That's it. From 2018 thru 2021 attendance dropped by 25% and TV ratings were terrible. Only reason attendance almost got back to 2017 levels in 2023 was Caitlins run in the NCAA tournament. Then 2024 only Caitlin games blew up. The rest stayed just as poor.

P.S. On her list of reasons for the capital raise Cathy mentioned “raises”. What? You do not raise capital to pay salaries, far less give raises. A capital raise is a long-term arrangement, while salaries are a very short-term annual expense. That’s called autosarcophagy, or self-cannibalism. You are devouring the company for subsistence. The colloquial term for this on Wall Street is “circling the drain,” i.e. going down the drain. As a CPA Cathy most certainly knows this. Is Adam Silver incapable of admitting a mistake? If so, maybe they’re both a mistake. Is everyone there asleep at the switch? Hello? Hello?
The NBA benefits from supporting the W. Girls of all ages are playing BBall and they and their fathers, brothers, boyfriends, and girlfriends are following NBA buying shoes and merch etc. Yhe W itself may never be profitable though. Even the NBA is fading at present.
You have to look at the tv deal pre Clark and post Clark. The biggest mistake made was not basing the new tv deal on this year’s viewership of the wnba. Just a stupid move to sign on the dotted line when everyone knows viewership and attendance was going to go up. Nothing is worse than MLB. The Dodgers, Yankees, Redsox and I believe Mets have so much more money than the other teams it’s a joke. That’s why I hate watching Major League Baseball. There is no interest in keeping a player because fans are invested in them for their whole career. You get into the question of whether baseball should be a pure socialist sport where each team gets the same amount of money. The fans of baseball lost a long time ago. 😢
What you present is typically complicated enough that I may not be sufficiently understanding the issues. With that caveat, I think you have demonstrated that the investors slice, in hindsight, was far from brilliant. It's as if the third party investment structure demonstrated that all involved at that time didn't really believe in the W's future since they apparently didn't consider the loan possibility from the NBA that you pointed out as the better possibility. They didn't think the W could ever earn enough to pay the loan back? Didn't think the W would ever become popular enough to garner money-making potential? So the "investment" in the league sounds more of a ruse than actual trust in the league.
@back2sports I watch like 6 channels for WNBA coverage. If the got paid 100k each and held meeting with the commish every week on what the people are looking for, they'd make millions for the WNBA
Kathy Englebert and the WNBA did the right thing. ALL businesspersons know that in order to think long term, you MUST eat short term. Raising the $75 million was eating short term. Non-businesspersons always think they're right when playing Monday morning quarterback.
You are right in saying "In order to think long term, you MUST eat short term", but the beef is not about raising the money it was how they raise it and by who. The NBA had the money available for the "LOAN", add in a buy back clause for the NBA 50% share for an amount agreed upon to be repaid over a negotiated long term period. The outcome is the WNBA will own the whole WNBA and as it continues to grow so will the revenue, merch sales, and TV / Online rights deals.
They are women, just look at the wnational soccer team pay inequality fiasco, they made the deal, and when they saw they lost, they screamed pay ineq. They are a waste of $$, u watch bball, watch NBA, and not even, that's woke lol. Let em go elsewhere

@@MarkWay-m6rI TOTALLY agree.
They are women, just look at the wnational soccer team pay inequality fiasco, they made the deal, and when they saw they lost, they screamed pay ineq. They are a waste of $$, u watch bball, watch NBA, and not even, that's woke lol. Let em go elsewhere
Fire Cathy then fold the league and let Caitlin put together the correct organization as a new league with a new television market and stay away from partnering and the NBA
Marketing THE PLAYERS? REALLY? WHAT ARE YOU DID TO CAITLIN CLARK IN HER ROOKIE AWARD,IS THAT MARKETING TO YOU?😂😂😂😂
