Modifying Mum's Car

  • Our Mum's raced their cars at Sydney Dragway. Marty's Mum's engine then blew up so we replaced it with an EJ20 WRX Engine from a half cut of unknown origins. Inevitably, that engine blew up also, so on this episode of Mighty Car Mods, we're going to work out why - and then fix it!

      Right this is the problem some other youtubers make when they get bigger. They start trying to edit more to make the videos "better". The problem is though the best part of their videos was just being able to watch the "boring" parts. Because at the end of the day the "boring"/slow parts are the most relatable.

    Wow. I'm just about to start my 04 WRX wagon for the first time after rebuilding it for a year. It's pretty much bone stock but had a spun bearing just like this one (and also a mishimoto radiator like this one too funny enough). This series would have been so great for me a year ago, but you guys just had to make me learn everything the hard way! I tore everything down on it and rebuilt it all new from the bearings, rings, and rod bolts to replacing all of my valve buckets to get a factory spec valve gap. I slapped on a Killer B oil pan, pickup, and baffle plus a new oil pump and oil cooler to clean it all up. Since then I've replaced the whole timing belt and cam pulleys. idler pulleys, water pump,all of the gaskets everywhere, all of the dry or damaged hoses, and any bolts that were sketchy. The uppipe on the ej205 has a catalytic converter inside that was super rattly and gross so I replaced it with a catless invidia pipe and removed the egt sensor that comes stock. I didn't want any junk falling apart directly into the turbo. I wired in a resistor to stop any CEL's for that too. After looking at the clutch and flywheel they were so burnt up and the car drove horribly before we took it apart. I ended up replacing the cheap lightweight flywheel and clutch with a stock flywheel and clutch kit. My goal with this project was to just build the dream street car that could be reliable and fun to drive in all conditions. I've tried to keep everything new and stock as well as unmodified all of the horrible junk that people have mistreated this poor car with. I gotta say, if you have the opportunity to do a rebuild, do it. It will be so much more money and time into it than you think but the experience of working hands on and memorizing all of the diagrams and parts is so satisfying and worthwhile. If I could give any advice to someone attempting this project, it would be to label all of your hoses and connecting parts before you take them off, take the time to clean and invest in a proper torque wrench, and to consider just buying a half cut so you have ALL of the parts ready to go. It's one hell of a puzzle to figure out, but it's actually designed quite intuitively and makes sense!

      Think about this. Do we compromise the functionality of a car to make infrequently changed parts easier or do we just make sure they are changeable with some effort? Plugs will generally go 50 K miles and many cars are scrapped at 150 / 200 K. That makes for 2 or 3 plug changes in a vehicles lifetime.

The internet said I'd spun a bearing when I checked at work. Checked it the next day, issue still there. Oil was on bottom of the stick, Topped it up. My mum used to have a 1977 (I think) Datsun 180B (810) that I used to drive after just passing my driving test in 1992. I used to love that car, it was like a mini yank tank and a great and fun car. The poor thing had to go to the great car park in the sky with only around 40,000 miles on it. Unfortunately for us, those early Datsun/Nissans would rust away in England's terrible climate. It failed it's MOT for excessive rust (bodywork, chassis, pretty much anything metal on the car) In the years we owned it we only ever saw 1 other on the road. What a great little car, not fast but fast enough that I humiliated many a car trying to overtake the old rust bucket. Sorry about me waffling on but seeing your vid reminded me of those simpler easier times!!!

    These cars suffer from low oil pressure on long right handers... The sweeper at Hampton Downs (Last corner) is notorious for breaking Subarus as the oil pick up is on the right and in a right hand turn all the oil is pulled to the left of the oil pan...

    • @zoomzabba452
      @zoomzabba452 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The pick-up is central. What's happening is all the oil is pooling against the valve cover in that head and can't get back down into the pan.

    • @Richard_AKL

    Depends who tunes the motor and more importantly how well its maintained.
    My old car was a 2003 WRX with 200kw@wheels running 21psi boost for 8 years on a stock engine, 15 years old and 160,000km daily driver and has been tracked. Engine was never was taken out, Still smokes all four wheels to this day and runs better than the day i got it 15 years ago.
    So no, Subarus turbo motors are not fragile, just crap mods and owners that treat them poorly that's the issue.

      So letting us know that means you refute what was just said because your personal experience is different? I know plenty of WRX and STi's that have never had the valve covers, oil pan or the engine out of the car, some heavily modified. I had a Mazda B2300 (Ford Ranger) snap a rod because the guy that didn't the old change didn't completely screw the oil filter on. Mazda replaced it under warranty but I am not going around saying Mazda/Ford 2.3L Lima engines suck....
