I think I bought one of Barry's recon jobs when I was a kid. It was a Honda CB250T, supposedly rebuilt. It lasted 2 days. When we pulled it apart, there was so much silicone where the barrel joins the bottom end, it had squeezed out and completely blocked the oil galleries to the head - to the point the valve rockers had worn _completely_ through in a day. Never again - I'll do my own work now or buy something with a warrantee, but I'll never trust anyone else's work again when it comes to buying a vehicle.

I know many people hate on subaru's and it may not be my main car but i have had 3 subaru's. I have 2 L series wagons with 1 over 200k km's and other with over 300k. And my second daily car is a subaru outback H6 with over 360k km's and starts and runs perfect with very little problems over the years. So i really cant say enough about how good and reliable they are. I do know some of the 2.5 engine do have its problems with the heads/ head gaskets but some dont and they go for ever.

The goop in the cylinders is from short trips where it does not get hot enough to burn the oil off. This is a result of the cylinders being on their side all the time. I've heard that certain oils exacerbate the issue (probably cheap ones). Just one of the caveats of a boxster engine.

The amount of difficulty MCM had with removing the cam bolts is normal for Subaru EJ motors. It's very common for a couple these to get stripped during disassembly and has nothing to do improper torque. This can even happen with motors that have never been disassemble since they left the factory. Any Subaru mechanic who has worked on EJ motors will be able to corroborate this fact.
