      Ed Sheeran nah there’s so many interviewers that completely steamroll the person while they are talking. a weird example, but i watch a lot of interviews about bjork, and i’ve seen two actually good ones as usually she will be talking abt her craft and someone will interrupt and try to guess what she’s going to say, or be like “wHy ArE yOu sO wEiRd?? HAHA LOL NEXT QUESTION” it happens so much rather than letting the guest speak.

    Funny thing...in real life Piper’s ex girlfriend who we know as Alex was actually named Catherine, but she called her Nora in her memoir for legal reasons. However she never actually got back with her, or especially get engaged to her. She did however have a fiancé at the time of her arrest whose name was actually Larry. He visited her at least once a week for over a year and stayed loyal. They got married the year after her release and still are.

      +MrDunedon 5:52 She is a voice for the millions of people tangled in our broken criminal justice system. She is an activist who spends a lot of her own time and money to raise awareness and try to find solutions. She is a fair skinned, attractive woman so people will listen to her when she talks about her time in prison. People are far less likely to have sympathy for a minority or someone who looks like a stereotypical prisoner. So she uses her platform to help the millions that are less fortunate than her. If she makes some money off of her book, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. She wrote the book to call out an uncomfortable truth about the horrid failings of our government and prison system.

    Love what she says about violent crimes here. It's so true that prisons really should only be used to protect us from violent people that will likely be violent again. The general population needs to just forget their unwarranted fears of the "criminal" label. Maybe that starts with reintegrating non-violent offenders into society and educating the public, then as a democracy deciding what punishment can better fit nonviolent crimes.

  • @Animalcrossing35
    @Animalcrossing35 10 ปีที่แล้ว +167

    The beauty is that I don't see her as a criminal. She shows no signs of the crazy, deranged criminal we all imagine she should be just because she went to prison. And that means we are at least moving in the right direction. Because regular criminals are just average people who have done something wrong in their past. And obviously for her, it was that case.

    I think we can all agree that rehabilitation and helping people off of drugs and to spend the money on mental health care would be more beneficial in hundreds of different ways. Unfortunately the likelihood of this happening is very small bc prison is a business. Corporations are making millions, if it billions, off of them. It is such a shame. Money talks. I am so glad that this interview exists and I hope to see the actors, and the media, start talking about the topics brought up here! I have read her book and she speaks on this quite a bit!! She is so inspirational!!

    • @dansbury
      @dansbury 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mi Poorboy while I completely agree with you I would not say "we can all agree". Along with the money issue there are plenty of people out there who believe the second you break the law you deserve to loose all rights and support. They think every penny spent on things like rehabilitation and mental health is a waste of tax payer money and things criminals don't deserve to have handed out to them. The people making money off the prison-industrial complex are using the votes of people who feel the need to be "hard on crime" to prevent these necessary and society-building programs from being implemented.

    Why do people always disregard non violent drug based crimes? Non violent doesn't equal ambivalent. I think the argument they're missing is that if a murderer kills one person, he/she will ruin the life of the victim and his/her family. But a drug dealer or heavy abuser might ruin the lives of most the people he/she interacts with. Drugs destroy communities, and their offenses shouldn't be disregarded.
    I'm not saying it's fair to lock up a murderer for 7 years and a low level drug dealer for 10. I don't even think punishment is the best way to deal with drug users. All I'm saying is when liberals talk about this subject they brush off the scale of harm caused by drug abuse and quickly move on to other issues.

    • @tinysmallhuman
      @tinysmallhuman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Grumpy Pentagon personally I think with drug users, we should look more into getting them off drugs. E.g rehab facilities. And keeping them off drugs

    • @adelarge
      @adelarge 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Did you miss the part of the video where she proposed a public health based solution to drug issues in poor communities? It’s not that liberals don’t care about the impact of drug-related crime, it’s just that removal from society isn’t a panacea for all social problems. Lock them up and throw away the key is objectively a more expensive and less effective solution.

    • @shannon_w.

      In New Jersey if you are charged with a non violent drug arrest you automatically are sentenced to Drug Court. While that sounds great there are a lot of things flawed with that. One being a large percentage of those arrested are drug dealers claiming to have drug problems in order to not face jail time and that disrupts the whole program ie; still dealing drugs while on Drug Court and having easy access to those just getting clean on Drug Court, not being rehabilitated because they don't have a drug addiction but a money addiction, which is a thing that doesn't get dealt with. Also I don't have specific statistics but as a person who knows many people who are and have been on drug court, it has not a very high long term success rate. You can't sentence someone into recovery they have to want it for themselves. Also because every person convicted of a non violent drug offense is sentenced to drug court the court and Probation Officers are overwhelmed! They used to sentence you in your first 6 months to inpatient rehab and when you did the 6 months then you had 3 stages of outpatient therapy that could take up to a year, there are 4 phases that you go through and to get from 1 phase to the next wasn't easy but now that there are so many people they just push people through from 1 phase to the next to easily. Also if you messed up more then 2 times you would have to go back to rehab and as I stated before they don't even send you there at all anymore! And lastly the majority of people had to complete 5 years before you could graduate, now people are getting off within 18 months. So who knows what is the best way to deal with this issue. I guess it is just a matter of trial and error.

    • @opal5149
      @opal5149 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Liberals aren’t brushing off the negative effects of drugs. It’s just that locking people up isn’t a solution. I honestly think all drugs should be decriminalized (this is different from legalization, it’s still illegal you just won’t be thrown in jail) we should instead invest in free rehab centers. We can’t force people to go to rehab (aka drug courts which don’t work that well), but people end up using them on their own. In Sweden for example, when they had a heroin pandemic, they invested in free rehab and social centers and 80% of their drug addict a used them freely. Not only would this save us money, but it would actually work towards solving the problem. It’s better to target harm reduction, because “deterrence” just doesn’t work with drug users

There’s almost zero violence and most people there are there for none violent crimes and the ones that are, should be in a heavier security prison. It’s either people there for drug charges or people who have microwaved their baby in minimum security facilities.

    In her experience, she was jailed for money laundering. However, in the show it almost romanticises these seemingly vulnerable women who got drove into mass drug dealing. Violent crimes are only under certain conditions however, drugs can kill people, destroy families and influence violent behaviour, no sympathy. I fully understand her point of view as someone who only committed a financial crime however, the show attempts to make the audience sympathise so heavily with drug dealers, something Piper Kerman never was, doubt she was even in max.

Have you seen the documentary on the women's prison in Detroit? some of those women who get released from prison leave only to get stabbed/raped and murdered or "vanish"....most likely from the people they mixed with. Poor girls, some are so young, only 19-22yrs old. There lives are just beginning

      +JC Rose I think that's the reason why the show included Taytee going back. Life sucked for her outside prison even if it wasn't an abuse thing :/ hopefully the show shows more of what Piper Kerman is talking about

      +JC Rose it doesn't mean it didn't happen....she just didn't see it. also the tv show was taken from her book but rewritten and all for entertainment.

      if you haven't been incarcerated before , let me share with you briefly why people are afraid of life outside
      Inside , all you gotta care about , is breakfast/lunch/dinner gonna be any good? What movies are we gonna watch on movie nights
      Can't wait for the next yard time , gonna do 40 push ups , that's 10 more extra since last week .
      An adult living a kid's life , you don't have to worry you got no job , or you have to pay rent for roof over your head or worry about your spouse cheating on you and abscondin' with all your hard earned money .
      Life is simpler behind bars . And i know people who lived a thug life and when they get thrown in for the first time . Life was so good on the inside , they intentionally pay someone to get punched by them and play the pity party so they can get more time on their sentence .
      That's how screwed up the world is . It's complicated

    The reason jail and prison are around is to make an example, you do something wrong there’s a punishment, keeps the crime rate lower, if we didn’t have prisons, crimes would be extremely high.

    What's the problem with getting frisked for drugs? If you don't have any drugs on you then why would you fear getting arrested for possession of drugs?

    Wait - in her early interviews she keeps saying how he attentions daily was on "SURVIVING" and survival. NOW she says she never witnessed ANY violence ? in the year she was in prison she has not witnessed any violence YET in all her early interviews she stresses on how she mostly kept her attention on "just surviving each day". Oddly enough i know people who have been in jail and they witnessed violence right off, and they were in town jails just overnight.
    hmmmmm. its hard to keep up with her changing story. kinda as annoying as the piper who playes her

      Angela Lee surviving could mean anything. It doesn’t mean see saw violence, she probably meant that in a not have a mental breakdown because I’m in prison kind of way!

    Piper Kerman helped launder heroin money, a very serious crime. She got exactly what she deserved.If I hear Piper whine one more time about how awful prison was, I may come unglued. She didn't make a mistake or commit an infraction, she was involved in the heroin business. Heroin is a ghastly drug that destroys lives. Do us all a favor, Piper, and please just shut up.

  • @misslori66

    Non-violent crimes are very serious as well. Take her own crime for example. Drugs. Drugs are responsible for probably 99% of the people that are in prison. I understand and agree with her points but I think she's not one who should be speaking on the problem of prison given that she was part of the problem... drug trafficker.

    • @BlueberryMom

      Who should be speaking on the problems of prison? You? The corporations that run prisons? It is great that she is using her privilege to bring attention to a problem that is largely ignored.
