What ruined the homologation specials was the manufacturers are not obeying the 25 car requirement and the regulators seemingly not enforcing them. If those were actually enforced then we'd have some epic examples of those road cars today.
Lancia actually built the required 500 of the Stratos but nobody bought the road legal version. They eventually sold them off at knock down prices just to get rid of them. Jaguar cheated homologation for the E type by saying that the racing Lightweight was the base model and all steel-bodied road cars were specials.
More like the other way round. Where the racing car had the fuel tank, Toyota removed it and placed a cubby just for the inspectors to see it actually had a luggage compartment!
@@Gois83 They didn't replace it, the story is even crazier than that. Instead of replacing it, they tried to convince the officials that since the fuel tank was bigger than a standard size suitcase, and the fuel tank is always empty during inspections, that the empty fuel tank should be considered as storage space since it could, in theory, hold a standard size suitcase... ...And it worked!

Loved this list. Homologation specials are some of my all time favorite vehicles. The Nissan R390 is still one of the most beautiful cars ever made in my opinion, as is the CLK-GTR. The Godfather of all modern homologation specials (IMO) was the Porsche 917. The FIA had tweaked the group 6 rules to effectively curb the viability of limited production number prototypes (read: the Ford GT40 Mk. IV) in order return to something more akin to what they had in the early ‘60s - low-number production cars which were equal parts road and race car (think the Ferrari GT cars of that era.) Porsche built 25 copies of an absolute racing prototype the likes of which no one had seen before and happily lined them all up for a photo op for the incredulous FIA inspectors. One was even converted to road legal use and it ushered in a decade where Porsche worked the FIA like a boxer would a speed bag.
My favorite homologation specials are the 1987/88 Chevy Monte Carlo/Pontiac Grand Am Aerobacks. At the time GM was having a very hard time besting ford's ultra dominant thunderbird in Nascar. First they tried using engines meant for drag racing to match the performance of the Ford V8 that was almost certainly putting out 600+ horsepower in practice and qualifying trim but that failed so they hit upon the idea of improving the areo of their cars. They did this by putting in a large curved rear window that aided airflow over the rear wing, but Nascar said "no no no, you must build and sell 2000 of each car to qualify to race it" so they did. It didn't work but there's 4000 of them out in the wilds.
My favourite is without any doubt the Honda VFR750R, commonly known as the Honda RC30 Did you see what I did there?? That’s right, rule bending, no one said it had to be a car😉

Porsche 962 is absolutely crazy car in simulators, it can pass turns at unbelievable speed. It still holds Nurburgring record 6:11, though race cars most likely clocked turbos closer to 1000 hp unlike Dauer ones.
One thing that wasn't mentioned about the CLK GTR in this video: Mercedes had a very short time to develop the car (128 days to be exact) in 1996. One reeeaaally cheeky thing they (along with AMG) did in speeding this up was by taking a Mclaren F1 GTR and then both grafting on their own bodywork (Which wasn't quite finalized yet) as well as swapping out the BMW V12 with their own V12 while still designing the chassis. That's an entirely different level of being cheeky with the rules.

The racing car the 33 Stradale was derived from ran in the sports prototype class so dodged the need to homologate and to produce cars for sale - its the other way round from the way homologation theoretically works where you base the racing car on the road car instead Alfa produced a few road cars to sell based on the racing car.
I really like the RS 500 Cosworth the most because of it’s design. It was an amazing car, and I wish it got the extra wing originally intended by Frank Stephenson. Edit: I was thinking of the escort, not the Sierra. My bad.
Yes the rear spoiler s are very similar. The rest of the car not so much. Although the Escort Cosworth has a shortened Sierra Sapphire Cosworth 4x4 floor pan and running gear underneath the Escort shell.
I'm actually disappointed about the BMW E46 M3 GTR not making the list. It obliterated the competition in ALMS in 2001 while the engineers were cheeky enough to make only 6 road-going GTRs. Unfortunately, the homologation regulations updated for 2002 to feature a minimum number of road-going cars forced BMW to withdraw the E46.
The two 993-look 911 GT1s were prototypes, not the original Strassenversion production cars. The actual Strassenversion production cars had the 996-look. Then there was the final GT1-98.

Love seeing the Pajero Evo gets a mention.
I really like the Lancia Delta S4 Stradale, though it had much less bhp than the Group B version.
1965 BMW 1800TI/SA, the grandfather of all BMW saloon racing cars.
In reverse was the Jaguar D Type/XKSS. Ask Steve McQueen about his Green Rat.
You missed the Jaguar XRJ-15, what a stunning car, and the original TVR Speed-12
Nice vid but would have loved to see Sport quattro and Delta S4 included too
ngl i love the CLK since nfs hot pursuit 2 and it will be always the best car i know
My favourite homologation special is Sega GT ;)
Errr...... Mr. G£R; why don't you try to explain Bean Engineering?.....
Makes me excited for what we'll see with LmH
Best video I have ever seen, thanks
How do you leave the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale of this list?!
My bad.
Thats the 4wd Escort Cosworth. Not the 2wd Sierra RS 500 cosworth.
@@posniknelb6114 my bad, it’s just that they look similar
Damn! Each entry made me go "woooh"!
No delta integrale or 037?? Those are a couple omissions I love!
The two 993-look 911 GT1s were prototypes, not the original Strassenversion production cars. The actual Strassenversion production cars had the 996-look. Then there was the final GT1-98.
