This is my favorite James and Mike moment... Hours of preamble and setup. Tons of tinkering and anticipating. Finally, they get it working! Mike asks, "how does it look?" James replies, "it looks like shit!" Hahahhahahahahahaha!! I love you guys!

You were missing one of the "squids." There is one for Genesis and one for SNES. $400 for that thing years ago! Can you imagine buying this thing in 1993!? I would have been PISSED! You can buy like 10 games for that price!

Hello, james Rolfe. I want to play a game... and it's Dr Jekyll and mr Hyde on the victormaxx. I have one for you which I personally modified to be compatible with the nes. It has ten pound weights duct taped to each side with no shoulder bar and extra cords that don't connect to anything unless you own a ww2 era toaster from Taiwan. The only way to remove the headset is to beat the game which will release the locking bolts around your cranium. But after 6 hours this mechanism will shut down. Leaving you to review the same shitty game until you die. Do you have what it takes? Do you hold the missing Tetris piece of the human puzzle? The one that so many gamers neglect by giving up on a game? - jagsaw (as in Atari jaguar)
I found one of these last year at a flea market. It came with the SNES cord you guys were missing, so it DOES play snes games. I've done it and it kinda works with super mario world. KINDA.
I love watching this vid over and over. They spend like an hour setting it up and give up playing in thirty seconds to keep from going blind. Beautiful.
Essentially, it's a television screen for your face... that's uncomfortable.

I think these kind of videos have a certain appeal to them that the standard AVGN episodes don't. They're unscripted and completely honest, so what you see is what really happens. There's something to be said about two guys playing shitty games without a script dictating what they're saying, and I think it's one of the reasons Game Grumps has gotten so popular.

I figured out what the stick was for, guys! The little thing on the side of the headset that the stick hooks into spins. When you turn your head left and right, it causes the stick to move, causing the thing to spin, which then causes the perspective changes in the little screen in the headset.
Also the reason you couldn't hook it to the SNES is that you were missing a set of cords (or maybe you had the cords and just didn't know what to do with them). That set of squid cords you've got hooked to the main cord is only for Genesis. You can remove this via that middle joint thing and replace it with another set of squid cords that has SNES-compatible hookups instead.
PLEASE do a redo on this thing and do it a bit more justice. I mean, you've gotta warn the people. This assload of shit can cause fucking vertigo as well as headaches! It can be legitimately worse than what you've made it out to be here!

This video is AMAZING, a perfect encapsulation of the frustration of hooking up obscure peripherals and dealing with wire squids!!!! Victormaxx's philosophy of life quote is one of the most bizarre and awesome sentences ever, & the realization regarding the function of that weird "stick with a clip on it" thing is absolutely priceless!!!!

I like how throughout the whole video they never thought that the SNES cords might just be missing.
I have one of those, well, I think I still have it. The stick thing activates the little actuator on the side of the headset and depending on what mode one of the dipswitches on the bottom of the headset is set to, changes what buttons it pushes when you turn your head. The idea is you could play like Doom and set it so when you turn your head you turn side to side or something.
Also the thing is awful and uncomfortable as fuck.
Edit: to work with the SNES you needed the Nintendoctopus cable, the Sega Squid is a different connector. The controller connections on the cable were a passthrough to allow the little shoulder stick activate inputs.
The only use for the thing was probably to have a personal screen, but it was like a 240i display or some shit so you can't read ANY text, and it had a bunch of overscan so you couldn't see the edges of the display. The thing is, indeed, a piece of fucking shit. And it was my Christmas one time.

The stick registers your head movements as controlling the game, for first person shooters. You tilt your head one way, it moves the stick and registers you as pushing that direction on the d-pad.

Playing devil’s advocate- the headset actually DID come with instructions. You can find a scanned copy online. James must have lost them somewhere.
His may have never came with instructions. He may have been sent that by a fan or he bought it online, but the instructions just didn’t come with it. I don’t believe he had this since he was a kid.

Funny thing is this overall design held true to actual virtual reality headsets. Even the wire squid at the end. Some headsets even have an ac adapter hooked up to the end just like the victormaxx. But at least it's only display port and USB in addition to that. Also, they actually work.
