    Hi Classic FM fans! Just a wee note to say that I missed a voice type in my list - Countertenors!! They are awesome, and they are one step higher than tenors, singing in their falsetto, and making them the highest male vocal range. They also share the castrato repertoire with mezzos. While they are quite rare, when you find one, it's very special.

      Technically, Castrati were more commonly dramatic sopranos, I thought. So tenors and sops share those roles. Counter tenors existed at the time, and these men didn't have the genital mutilation done to them. I'm glad the rep is still sung though.

      @@liamderosa2157 To answer your question, they do both. It depends what the choir needs the most at the time and what sort of mezzo-soprano you are.

    The nerve of some people to come along on a video of a _professionally trained_ opera singer and try to tell her what voice type she is! She's been trained for _years_ in this industry, a professional singer HAS to know their voice type because they have to be able to preserve their voice and use it correctly. Her VOICE is her JOB!
    Different vocal techniques apply to different ranges. If she really _were_ a soprano, her head voice would be virtually unusable due to the fact that her range extends so low. I'm not hearing many notes past C6 from this lady, and in opera, most sopranos LIVE on C6 and above!
    If you want to see a real soprano, you only have to watch Diana Damrau as Queen of the Night. There's no way the lady in this video could reach that range without sacrificing her voice. And me neither to be honest, since I'm a mezzo myself.
    Of course Mezzos have higher voices than altos. That's why we're called mezzo _sopranos_ or Second _sopranos._ I can't believe this even has to be said. 🤦🏻‍♀️
    Show me your years of training in opera. Show me your research. Show me where you went for your qualifications. THEN tell me you know better than a _trained professional._

      diana damrau is coloratura soprano. saying that you aint a real soprano if you cant do queen of the night is not accurate, as most sopranos would then lose their "soprano" title :D imagine dramatic soprano trying to hit these top notes at fast pace :D when they dont even have the notes.
      i myself am dramatic soprano and people say im a mezzo, cause these two sound pretty similar in general and have similar range.

    I think mezzo soprano is the most confused female type. I hear a lot of disagreement between people believing a mezzo is just an underdeveloped soprano. I think this is underestimating the range of mezzo. And classing it all as one type. she explains there are different types, they have different feels to them. NOBODYS VOICE IS THE SAME>.

    • @roisinnigcrainn7722
      @roisinnigcrainn7722 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Exactly! I'm a mezzo who can get down to deep alto/mid-tenor range. It all depends on where you start training your voice and how it responds. If you're a mezzo and you start training the upper end of your range first, you're going to naturally sound "more soprano". That doesn't mean you're not a mezzo!

    • @ishathakor
      @ishathakor ปีที่แล้ว +2

      that's definitely underestimating the range and ability of the mezzos.
      personally i have a theory for why people think that. a lot of women (not sure, but i've even heard that it's statistically the majority of women) are sopranos. a lot of people also think that voice type is determined ONLY by vocal range and no other considerations (like timbre or passaggios). when you start singing, your vocal range might not really extend far past your comfortable range. for a soprano this range sits really comfortable in the alto range (in choir) which is about F3-F5 iirc. it's really easy to believe you're an untrained alto when you're able to sing all or most of the notes in the choir alto range but not in the choir soprano range (C4-C6). some music teachers (mine did this, for example) or vocal coaches (i've seen some youtube ones say this) will basically tell you that if you can't sing high notes you're an alto (by which they mean contralto and not just that you should sing the alto part in choir) or mezzo soprano. if you go into opera (don't know much about opera) i feel this whole misconception thing might not be a huge issue but for the general public there is a lot of confusion and misinformation. i've even seen people like taylor swift who has a very light voice and definitely sounds like a higher soprano to me get called a mezzo (and even contralto a few times) just because she doesn't have a crazy upper register like ariana grande.

    • @noblesetsentimentales
      @noblesetsentimentales 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Natural sopranos choosing to sing mezzo instead have always been a thing, though. Some "mezzos" are just more upfront about it than others, like Teresa Berganza.

    • @kaoruyamazaki5724
      @kaoruyamazaki5724 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I disagree because sopranos can’t go that low

    • @spicychickenboba
      @spicychickenboba 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ishathakorI've always sung soprano...F3 is definitely not comfortable for me.
      From my experience it is definitely not true that most women are sopranos.
      And Taylor Swift...idk her voice type, wouldn't be surprised if she's an underdeveloped soprano...but she DOES have a well-developed lower register that I do not have. Her low notes can range from difficult to impractical to me. I wouldn't be surprised if she is a mezzo.
      I'll add that I think it's hard for natural sopranos to sing mezzo consistently and SOUND like a mezzo. I don't know how to create a color like that except by using a throaty sound (known as "ingolato" if I am not mistaken) which is improper classical technique.
