Sorry the audio is a bit buzzy in this one! I didn't realise my external hard drive was touching my desk leg which caused the noise. Luckily I figured out what it was so we wont have this audio issue again hopefully!
The fact that you figured out that that's what was doing. It is crazy. I sometimes have weird computer problems but can never figure out specifically where it's coming from
Fun detail - in the song "Hellfire," Frollo spends the entire song denying responsibility for his sins, blaming Esmeralda, the devil, etc. Meanwhile, the chorus is singing in response the lines from the Confiteor, a prayer during the Catholic Mass in which you acknowledge your sins. As Frollo sings "It's not my fault / I'm not to blame," the response from the chorus is "Mea culpa / Mea culpa / Mea maxima culpa," which translates to "through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault." The film and its score are absolutely bursting with extra meaning if you either know Latin or, more particularly, are familiar with Catholicism. The recurring motif of "Kyrie eleison," which appears throughout the musical score, means "Lord have mercy" in Greek and is part of the Catholic Mass.
Also, another fun fact. Hellfire was such an amazing Disney villain song that no other Disney film, at least theatrically(so although I rock with My Lullaby from Lion King 2, it doesn't count), had a villain song until the Princess and the Frog.
There are two theories as to why Frollo saw the gargoyle coming to life: 1: gargoyles are protectors against demons and evil spirits, and Frollo's soul had been fully corrupted to the point where the gargoyle saw him as a demon. Or 2: It was Satan claiming Frollo's soul after 20 years of waiting for Frollo to squander away his chance of redemption granted to him by God through the Archdeacon.
I like the first one better, because you're right about the gargoyles. They send fear into demons and evil spirit. So when Frollo looked into its eyes in his last moments he was filled with the fear of Gods judgment.
Also a cool detail is that during the end of hellfire, the solder who told Frollo that Esmeralda had escaped was basked in an heavenly blue and white light while Frollo was in the hellish red and orange light. This symbolizes that God gave Frollo a chance to do the right thing and let Esmeralda go, but Frollo refused and gave into his sins as he turned towards the fire, implying that he’s made his final choice and that he is going to hell.
It's a gorgeous film with a gorgeous soundtrack, but I have to say that I cringe every time they use the word "g*psy" considering it's a racial slur for Romani people even if some Romani people in the UK use it to refer to themselves.
Esmeralda is my favorite Disney Heroine throughout Disney history. I absolutely love everything or bother her strong spirit, her kind soul, her beautiful design, and her beautiful song God helps the Outcasts. The song truly sent a message. But I also love Quasimodo, because despite his deformed face and hunchback, he has a kind, gentle soul and he’s very shy.
Yes, that’s what Disney does. Not sure if you’ve noticed but Disney never does anything original. They always make their own animated versions of old stories
This movie is one of those that you don't like very much as a kid but now have a newfound appreciation for it as an adult. I definitely considered it one of the best Disney movies ever made along with Beauty and The Beast and The Lion King. Quasimodo is such a likable character, he's like an angel trapped in a demon's body. The phrase "Who is the monster and who is the man" still got me. At the beginning we're led to believe that Quasi is the monster and Frollo is the man, but at the end it's a complete reversal, Frollo is the true monster and Quasi is the man. What an underrated masterpiece.
Hunchback is probably the darkest Disney movie I've ever seen. Fun fact, in the original book Frollo was archdeacon, not minister of justice like he is in the film. Also, a couple of years before the film came out, there were various incidents of police breaking down doors into churches to discover illegal immigrants hiding in there, and a lot of French moviegoers were reminded of that when watching the film
This movie is totally overlooked because of the Little Mermaid/Beauty and the Beast/Aladdin/The Lion King run and it may be better than all of them. I was enthralled at 13 years old and it still holds up. When Quasimodo breaks his chains, swoops down and declares sanctuary is just awesome.
I remember not liking this so much as a kid, but in retrospect I think that’s because as a kid it was more obviously dark compared to other Disney movies at the time
Probably the most evil villain in Disney animation, I can't believe how dark this kids movie was... I didn't realize that while watching it as a kid, but was definitely surprised as an adult.
Yeah but now they’ve gone dark in a different way. They would’ve re-made this and made all the characters a “darker pigment” in their skin even tho they’re all European 😂
Frollo's single redeeming quality is his apparent bond with his horse. He didn't want the horse to get hit by an arrow and the horse is even given the name Snowball. Imagine that.
This is another of my 90's childhood favorites from Disney! It was a good thing Esmeralda and Phoebus were good people with hearts and they definitely helped Quasimodo out against Frollo. You should see the sequel called "The Hunchback of Notre Dame 2" cause that's when Quasi falls in love with a new woman who's more his speed and she actually likes him back.
😎👍 Esmeralda and Megara (from "Hercules") are two of the three most neglected Disney Princesses of the 1990s. The third one is Jane from "Tarzan" (1999). Perhaps you should watch that one next. 😉
This was back when Disney was pushing boundaries with their movies. This was almost on Dreamworks' level of subject material with the religious ruling, the sexual connotations, the persecution of the Gypsies (yes I know this is a slur, but I don't know the better word currently). Also, I don't know if you noticed, but Quasimodo and Frollo's relationship was similar to that of Rapunzel and her so-called mother in Tangled. This was the 90s version of that.
i watched this on teathers on release back when i was 10 years old... the scene where the girl touches hunchback's face... i cried my eyes out, truly a golden age of stories back then
I'm so glad you did this film. Growing up this came out when i was really little and it was always my favorite from the get go and now that I'm older it's got a whole new meaning and still my favorite.
For me the best Disney songs in their animated movies are the villain songs. "Poor Unfortunate Souls," "Be Prepared," but this one "Hellfire" is the best one of them all. I really hope they don't screw it up when the do the live action remake of this movie. As Captain Malcom Reynolds from the TV show Firefly said, "Nothing worse than a monster who thinks he's right with God."
Some fun facts about mediaevel europe: - The average farming peasant had more days off than most people today, because the harvest didn't need constant tending to. - Women usually brewed ale and ran taverns (or 'alehouses'), until the early modern Era rolled around. - Armour wasn't really clunky and heavy. No, really! - The Knights Templar was destroyed because certain rulers (especially the French king) Owed them money!
There are two beautiful songs that were cut from the movie; "As Long As There's A Moon" and "In A Place of Miracles". They were both attempts at love songs for Phoebes and Esmerelda and where cut to keep the story focused on Quasimodo. Both are available for listening on TH-cam.
I love this movie, but I think I love the music even more. It’s the only animated film that I ever bought the soundtrack for. It’s definitely the darkest animated Disney film. They really went for it with this one and I totally respect that. If you’re looking for other animated films, all of the early 90’s ones are great. The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and the Lion King. And if you haven’t seen them, the original classics are worth watching too. Snow White just for the history. The first ever full length animated film. Everyone told Disney he was insane but he did it anyway. Cinderella and Pinocchio too. And Fantasia, although that one is a little bit of a love it or hate it kind of movie because it’s just a really artistic piece of cinema but it doesn’t really have much of a story at all. Also the early Pixar stuff is all outstanding. Toy Story, Monster’s Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Cars are all top-tier Disney.
It's interesting how they examined perceptions with this film. Frollo sees things only In absolutes and thus when he's confronted by someone he reviles as desirable, he becomes obsessed with the feeling, even in opposition to self image as a man of god. Quasi is innocent and sheltered so when Esmeralda shows him kindness he inadvertently puts on a pedestal, not seeing her more sultry aspects, until much later. But Phoebus, he's worldly enough thst he sees both sides of her, accepting her as a whole. Thus he and her fall in love, while Quasi grows out of his limited perception to understand her as a friend. It's only the corrupt, and self righteous, Frollo who fails to learn and is destroyed by his own unseen sins.
This was my favorite Disney movie when I was young. It is one of the, if not the darkest Disney animated movie. Hellfire is one of my go to Disney karaoke songs as well.
You know the stage adaptation takes more from the original novel by Victor Hugo, in terms of the overall tone and a VERY different ending, although it does include the music from the Disney film. 29:57 But in the stage adaptation, Esmeralda actually does die but, not before thanking Quasimodo for being a good friend to her...😢

This was one of my fave movies as a child. Loved it way more than most of the Disney movies I saw and that’s saying something cause I was a major Disney kid at the time. The original book has an especially sad ending. Esmerelda does die along with her goat and Quasi ends up shutting himself in with her body and died holding her
god help the outcasts is one of my top songs in any disney movie ever especuially fond of the swedish version i grew up with, and yes it is a kids film because back then we were not as oversenstive as todays people are
Fun fact: The gargoyles are named after the original Author of Hunchback of Notre Dame, Victor Hugo. Laverne, meanwhile, is named after Laverne Andrews, a member of the Andrews sisters.
This is by far one of Disney's darkest films and one that I enjoyed as a kid, and then have found a new appreciation for as an adult, especially after 5 semesters of Latin in college. Frollo is also one of the darkest Disney villains and unlike previous villains that were evilf or the fun or sake of being evil, Frollo truly believes himself to be good, that all his actions, no matter how wicked or unforgivable, serve the will of God. Thus his clashes with the Archdeacon represents the difference between those who claim to be men of God and actual Men of the Cloth.
God when Disney made good movies and songs🔥The movies have declined some are still ok but THE MUSIC, THE MUSIC has no questioned declined like the last big song I remember everyone going crazy for was the Bruno one🤣Comparing that to can’t wait to be king and prince Ali is crazy the songs in hunchback hell Tarzan!! I miss old Disney so much😭
You should watch te 1990s movie Huncback with Mandy Patinkin and Salma Hayek (young Salma is super hot Esmerelda - perfect actress for the job). Even though it's low budget, the acting was very good and it was pretty faithful to the source. Very good.
Disney took a lot of liberties when adapting this story. Remember, the guy who wrote the novel also wrote _Les Misèrables_ . The book centers on corruption and innocence, with the namesake cathedral being a major part of the story. Victor Hugo wrote the novel in order to save the Notre Dame de Paris from being torn down due to nearly a century of disrepair and damage.
Other fun factoids: when Frollo offers twenty pieces of silver for Esmeralda, it's the same price Jesus is betrayed for in the New Testament. The Court of Miracles sequence is one of the closest to the book in this whole adaptation ... and the molten metal pouring down the gargoyle spouts was actually part of the original book! As is the weird ... interest in the goat Djali. And then the name Esmeralda itself was related to alchemy, as in the book, Frollo was a very learned alchemist who was secretly training the King of France in alchemy.
Hunchback might not be the objective best Disney movie, but it is hands-down my favorite. The characters are great, the animation is stellar and the soundtrack is actually Disney’s best imo
I remember getting the VHS a day earlier then the actual day it came out with my mum, was a legendary day that was 😎 definitely a dark tale but a classic nonetheless 😊
If the Disney version made u sad dont look up the ending to the book. Although ppl should know the book so they dont get fooled by Phoebus dudes an asshole.
This movie got a lot of heat on it back in the day but it shows that Disney isn’t all sunshine and rainbows and they can go dark when called on. Given the source material was already dark this movie is tame in comparison. Frollo is truly an example of a real villain as IRL there are people who misuse their power for personal gain. His desire to own Esmerelda is some very age old notion that wanting the ‘enemy’ and having her somehow absolves him of his supposed misdeeds. Which is why Quasi not ending up with Esmerelda was a good direction unlike Frollo who literally burned down the city to get Esmerelda and tried to kill her when rejected by her Quasi allows Esmerelda the choice to be with Pheobus is he hurt? Cleary. But he knows Frollo never game him the freedom to choose and he wouldn’t put het through the same. Plus Quasi’s end story was to be accepted and loved by the people which he proved by saving Esmerelda.
Sorry the audio is a bit buzzy in this one! I didn't realise my external hard drive was touching my desk leg which caused the noise. Luckily I figured out what it was so we wont have this audio issue again hopefully!

Tony Jay was a phenomenal voice actor.
Also if it shows the guard telling frollo Esmeralda escaped that could represent and Angel giving him one last chance to stop but Frollo didn’t
There are two theories as to why Frollo saw the gargoyle coming to life:

more likely he's half insane. lonely people invent other entities to communicate with.
I think it's just Notre Dame itself intervening. Like the church has had enough with Frollo's evil ways.
Also a cool detail is that during the end of hellfire, the solder who told Frollo that Esmeralda had escaped was basked in an heavenly blue and white light while Frollo was in the hellish red and orange light.

Aladdin is a really good movie, but my personal favourite (by far) is Mulan.
Hey girl ❤ thank you
Hunchback of Notre Dame in a nutshell: Cruel old priest has the most extreme reaction o a... stiffy.
The kissing scene and seeing him getting his heart broken is the most memorable scene
Even if you don't react to it, you should check out "Amadeus". VA for Quasimodo is the titular character.
If the Disney version made u sad dont look up the ending to the book. Although ppl should know the book so they dont get fooled by Phoebus dudes an asshole.

My favorite animated Disney movie.

The real story is even darker.
Howdy Aly, you're the one of two regular reaction hubs i ever watched.

Hi Alyska hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
This movie got a lot of heat on it back in the day but it shows that Disney isn’t all sunshine and rainbows and they can go dark when called on.
Plus Quasi’s end story was to be accepted and loved by the people which he proved by saving Esmerelda.
this movie is my childhood😁 when i was a kid i saw it in the theater😁
