Superb flying by Scottish Charity Air Ambulance in Glen Coe

  • While travelling north through Glen Coe, Scotland on the 5th of July 2024, we were sadly at an accident scene where the SCAA Air Ambulance was called in to extract a casualty. It never ceases to amaze me the talent of these professionals in getting to a scene quickly and safely. We were asked to remove our car from the carriageway to a nearby driveway so the aircraft could land on that stretch of road.
The professionalism of all the emergency service crews was superb and they did their best to also make sure the casualty had as much privacy as possible while being worked on by medical staff and flight crew.
I have no information on the person who had to be removed but hope it was a positive outcome.

Thanks for the great video! It's amazing to see how fast these pilots are able to make the right decisions in such bad weather conditions in a rather tight space with lots of obsticles and bad sight. When I was 5 years old I observed for the first time how a rescue helicoper was landing close to the place of an accident and taking off again. My parents were not able to pull me away until the helicopter disappeared. I fell in love with helicopters forever. But it took another almost 60 years until I started to fly RC helis. A small compensation for not flying the "Real Thing" and tons of fun and joy!!

Fortunately many value the contributions these teams make to society and subsequently the revenue from donations, and the fact that that aircraft are (in some cases) funded and operated by private businesses can make it a viable operation.

There used to be a wind sock up there on the A82; not far from Jimmy Savill’s house. If you were caught in slow traffic, it’s not unusual to see it pirouette to all directions of the compass and vertically as well. There’s no usual wind direction in that location. It’s a fair bet that the pilot had a firm gluteal grip on the vinyl seat while his hands were on the controls.

Was wondering why the pilot was going slowly upwards and backwards - is it to reduce causing too much "wind" and blowing cars off the road, etc? For all vehicle insurance policies, the insurance companies should donate 2 - 3% to the voluntary emergency services, e.g. mountain rescue and these helicopter folk. In addition, we should have statory hill walking insurance, this insurance will go to voluntary emergency service charities.

It looks great to the uninformed casual observer, but the pilot needlessly put himself, the med crew, the helicopter, and those in close proximity in a higher risk profile than required to complete the task at hand. @@ln4LN4I think so too. It looks like he was either considering landing on the gravel track first but it's lower than road level and the road would have posed a potential risk of a rotor strike. Then landing on the road itself poses a risk as there's a 45 degree upslope and trees to the right of the landing spot off camera. Lots of terrain all around too, hidden in the cloud and in worsening condition. This probably dictates his departure.
