I saw this video about 2 years ago and right away bought Jolen, but I didn’t use it until yesterday. The Jolen product had an expiration date of 2021, so it has been 2 years expired and I still went ahead and used it. Instead of using a butter knife, I used a watercolor brush… the skinniest one, just like the watercolor brush that came with that coloring set that we used during our elementary education. Anyway, I cut the bristles of the brush in half to make it more manageable… and it was much easier to handle. And the result was better than the boxed set. FYI, I have black brown hair and the highlights were honey in color… light but soft. I am so pleased. Thank you so much for your video. Oh, I waited for an hour before I rinsed my hair because my hair is coarse and thick 😊
I tried this last night with a regular old highlighting kit that comes with a cap. Parted my hair and even did the sides around my face. Used a mirror to do the back. The knife works better than a toothbrush, fork, the brushes that come with the kits, etc. It came out gorgeous. I look like a sun goddess.(okay, an ugly sun goddess) Brilliant idea! Best I've ever seen!
OMG thanks for posting this video tip. I did my hair this morning with my regular Garnier Nutrisse Multi-Lights Highlighting Kit because it's very thick no cap needed, and it worked great!!!!! It took me a couple tries to figure out how to get the knife blade coated correctly. After that it was a breeze. And my hair came out looking great. NO MORE chunky streaks. This knife trick IS the bomb!!
This is crazy. It's cheap, takes only 20 min & looks better than the expensive, time-consuming foil highlights my hairdresser does. My hair is brownish so it looks diff. on me, but it's gorgeous, not brassy at all. It costs around $8 on Amazon. The only thing I changed was using a plastic knife :)) Thank you for posting. Who would have guessed this actually works?
I tried this stuff, works well, but instead of just making lines with a little applicator. I glob it across the roots and combed it through. Worked great.
I did a patch test and loved the result so I did my ash blonde roots...but just the top hair...not underneath. Trying to get out of the all-over bleaching jobs at the salon...tired of them. Just wanted to soften my top roots so they don’t look so stark. This stuff works fabulously. Who knew! I absolutely love the result! No orange whatsoever! Just a lovely golden blonde color...very natural looking. Only needed to leave it on for 10 minutes! I’m done with expensive and inconvenient salon appointments for good!!!! Done with walking around with long stark roots in between salon sessions too. Wow! THANK YOU so much Skip2mylou! You’re the best to share this wonderful solution, with us ladies. ♥️
Good video ! Great place to start for those who wanna give it a go at home (and fall in love with having some control over thier hair and wallet) I always lift/color my hair at home - although I grew up in a salon and then worked in one as a young adult I have had plenty trial and error. I am sure that you're not a fool and you know your hair. However, to my knowledge you should never use anything metal while bleaching/coloring your hair. It can have a bad reaction- and, well - that's no fun. PSA Experiment with paint brushes, small sponge brushes or fun shaped and angled salon style color brushes. Depending on the amount of time I have, supplies, patience, regrowth, and desired result I freehand/balyage or cap highlight or put in a few foils in the face framing and crown area. You can freehand paint bleach but consider the following things below : Bleach expands (think foamy) overtime after you mix it. Watch out for any bleeding or transfer of the bleach onto unwanted areas. Otherwise you could end up looking like a spotted leopard and not a cute one either. Wella has a great clay consistency balyage bleach - but I do not recommend it if you need more than 4 levels of lift. There are a few bleach tubs/packs by l'oreal that lift well and two by Ion, all at Sally's. . FYI. If your bleach dries out - it stops lifting. So depending upon your bleach brand, use 2 units of developer to 1 unit of bleach. You could go a bit over 2. Lift a bit more than you think you need, without surpassing the time recommended by the manufacturer. You can always tone it later. But, keep it as far away as possible from your scalp since your scalp gives off heat and this is what helps cause "hot roots" or abnormal lighter color spot just at the root area closest to the scalp. If this happens, tap your root area with a color a shade lighter or same as your natural or background color. Then tone. Do not do it opposite as you run the list of lifting your hot roots even further. If you are toning, obviously use the opposite color base to counteract orange/yellow. If you want your hair and highlights a bit brighter go with a 10-20 volume developer (but beware on your darker hair as it will lighten it a bit and it can bring out a bit of brass in darker shades since blonde toners (ex. Wella T18) actually do not have the right amount of violet or blue or green tones for darker hair that has pulled Brass. You will then be stuck with super ashy light highlights and brassy base undertones. If you want to try and avoid that situation and are okay with simply zapping the Brass in your highlights use a deposit only developer (wella also makes one, used for semi permanent color charm line) but keep an eye on it depending on the toner. I prefer to tone my root area with a semi permanent level 7-8 with ash or cool undertones then apply a T18 wella blonde toner or a semi permanent 10-11 with ash/cool tones. Hope this ridiculously long comment helps someone !
This is an amazing trick! I have dark blonde base and have not been to my stylist due to covid. The outcome was absolutely beautiful. Very subtle not too much but took the harsh line of my roots away. I am so happy with the results and will be doing this on all my roots!

I am a master colorist and I thought I should leave a quick Warning: This is Not something that will work on just any shade of hair. This would only lift one-two shades at best and a natural blonde color, if your lucky maybe some with darker blonde. Still, the color would lean to a more gold or brassy tone. Definitely not what you want to use when trying to achieve more of a bright platinum or creamy beige tone. Anyone with med- darker hair would definitely find themselves with more a red, orange, yellow/gold or brassy tone.

Thank you so much for you video. I have added these highlights using the facial bleach. It is so non damaging and economical. Used to streak my hair with a cap with a lot stronger bleach, or pay a lot for foils at a hairdresser. Not using dark dyes anymore for the silvers coming through due to reports of dangers of that, will just use this for highlights all over now. Beauty of it is you can redo highlights in various stages to lift them to the required level, over a period of time, and section hair to do underl ayers and sides if you do you your hair up.
Thank you so much for your video. Jolen costs so much less than other kits and works at least as well. I used a dollar store toothbrush, the tail end of it to touch up roots, and ten minutes later the brush end of it to pull the cream from the roots to the ends to create brighter highlights. It worked perfect. I never would have thought to try this if I hadn't seen your video. Thanks again.
I knew there had to be an easier way to do highlights. I was going to try something similar but the knife idea is great. Thank you for sharing. The videos was well made too. This was very helpful.
We used this in the 80s to streak our hair, don’t know why I didn’t think of it now. I’m going grey and will miss my dark brown hair but it’s time to try some highlights and I think this will be perfect!
Thank you! I used to buy regular home hair bleach kits, $15 or so, and use the brushes, and it never quite turned out right. This is so easy, and cheaper!
so, so nice of you cant wait to try. i like the whole take of throwing everything behind you. very cute . made watching worth while with your personality and all. thank you for sharing with us all.
You are hilarious. I'm so uptight about trying something new on my hair....make up can be removed, hair is with you a lot longer! Anyway, found you via Google question about highlights and I'm so glad. You're a breath of fresh air on TH-cam. Please do more! - Edit: this was supposed to go with your 'highlights from the beginning' vid.
Agreed! My sis in law paid £60 last summer and still had half inch roots! (She's a bit timid so me an another sis had to drag her back to complain) ok, fair do- the salon fixed it for free, but hell! This aint bad at all!!!
Great idea!! Thank you ❤️ I always hated how they would NEVER get the lightener right up next to the root. I don’t know why but this looks so much better
I've been using this for years on my eyebrows and I also did use it for highlighting for a while. I'm going go back do doing that. Thanks for the video.
Thank you!!! This was just the kind of tutorial I was looking for: no emphasizing how ever professional and careful you have to be before making any try!!!
I loved the knife technique ! I use t use Jolene on my roots until I left it on too long & my hair broke off at the roots -It looked liked a Mohawk! do not leave it on too long!
I now have a pixie cut and I just tried on a part of my head which could be hidden if it did not turn out for some reason....WELL, IT DID WORK for me and looks great. My hair is golden blonde with highlights, and this worked really well. I will let my hair get a bit dirty again and do the rest of my head. I used a plastic knife, even though you had no problems, Lou, I noticed that the little stirring paddle is plastic...so I went with plastic and left it on for about 15 minutes--then washed my hair in the shower. This could not have been easier and I keep going back to my mirror to check it out. This is great and the color is soft and my hair shines so it did not burn it. Many thanks for a great tip. Jolen cost me $5.69 in CVS today and with a $3.00 off coupon--$2.69! My hair dresser wanted to charge me $80.00 to highlight a pixie :-(.
This is 40 years old, started in France I think. Instead of using a knife, I was taught to use a wide tooth comb, squeeze out the bleach/color on the comb "exclamation points" (start at the tip of the twine of the comb with a large amount, then taper off to a smaller amount on the twine), then drag the comb through the roots. Only worked for dark blonde hair as it's not precise enough and darker hair will show the imprecision. I like this because you can be more precise but it's still a fast way of doing it. Lifting up each strand and "painting" is very time consuming!
I'm trying this tonight. I am so scared but trust you after watching your video with the lightening powder and 40 developer. my friend's hair turned out great!! Thanks Lou, love watching you!
I think that what the person that said they're a hairstylist was trying to say, lol, was u r not supposed to ever use metal with bleach. I'm a hairstylist too and we were always told to never use a. Metal clips and anything metal that could touch the bleach. Your hair could start smoking from the chemical reaction.
So incredibly simple. Thanks much. I tend to complicate stuff and then become overwhelmed to the point of not wanting to try something. I needed to see your method. Big hugs to you.
I’ve just subscribed, love the result! Wow! Thanks so much for making this so easy! 🙌 Going to try this, as I just don’t seem to always get the result from hairdressers, it can be “hit & miss” at times! Occasionally, I’m just looking for “feature foils”, in the places I’d like them…which they won’t do, as they’ll only do half or full head foils & I’m not always requiring that. Love the way you applied across your hair, I’ll try that approach too! 💗
Will it turn hair red? Messed up my roots(gray) with an 8N root touch-up by Revlon and now the tops too dark. I look like Dog the Bounty Hunter. Can I use this on top of that?
This fine. Great didn't it we learn something new everyday and I are retired cosmetologist people you know your hair is not hard to do I think girls are just spoil too and they want to be pampered in I guess that's okay if that's what you want but I could spend my money out of the things like a new outfit and you purse a new pair of shoes rubbing spending all that money at the salon when I can do it myself and do it better and you probably could too but you just don't have enough confidence you never do it one time you won't go back and guess what if you mess up its hair it will grow back it is not the end of the world that's how we live and learn doing hair is so simple but if you working in the public doing hair that's a different store because you have to know all this skin and scalp diseases you have to know the whole anatomy of the body do you think that it does not apply and cosmetology well yes it does you're not a dermatologist but you have to deal with a lot of skin disorders and scalp disorders true
Omg your videos are unbelievable! I’m stuck inside due to the 🦠 and hair looks hellish... I wanna cheer myself up by having a full pamper day in my bathroom... So have subbed! Sorry London was gloomy when you came it’s beautiful here today....😂 Hope you’re well n stay safe.....Thanks with love! 🙏🏼💕
I used to use that to bleach my mustache, then take what ever was left over and touch it to the waves in my brown hair. Every time was a different place but it created a lightened by the sun look.
I just tried it today, because I had to cancel my appointment that was scheduled yesterday. It worked pretty well for a touch up! Next time I might leave it in for a few more minutes (I had it in for about 10 minutes (because I was a little nervous) after I was done with the last touch up, but would do 15 next time). It definitely worked well around my face on the little baby hairs:).
@@jennyluna632 Hi, how coarse is your hair and what colour you use usually? I am asking because that timing m ight be suitable for mid-coarse hair and/or dark blond or light brown hair (same as my hair).
Good video. I use very small elastic bands and section of about 10 or 15 hair strands of about 1 cm and then bleach them,, comes out fine on top of dark short hair and helps blend in greys.

I've watched your videos, they're so good. You are really creative 👌 I have a question though. Does this bleach cause graying of hair or any kind of damage if done once a month?
I liked that..its so easy..I never would have thought to use that bleach? Why not! Can't wait to try it and save myself money at the beauty shop shop thanks!
I saw your updated version of dying your hair it's so funny I do it the same way but I use just for men beard and mustache color. When you streak it's perfectly your hair tends to look like a tigers stripes, if you do it sporadically throughout your roots it actually looks a little more natural. Love you Lou
Love this! I really need a root touch up on my at-home highlights I did last year. Deffinitally going to try this so I don't have to re-highlight my whole head
WOW! I am giving it a try... genius idea and I am a user of the product already. Totally can relate to not following the directions exactly, but appreciate you recommending that people do. Thank you .....Wish me luck!
so the bowl, brush and developer you threw over your shoulder is the EXACT SAME THING THAT CAME IN YOUR DOLLAR STORE BLEACH KIT, ONLY SMALLER.what a dope.you don't have to apply with a brush, its there for mixing. you can apply with your freakin finger if you want. EXCELLENT tutorial for those who want the orange stripes in your hair like this guru has. good luck !
I'd love to see you maybe put a little toner or some purple shampoo after doing this! It might turn you more of an ashy/lighter blonde. I might try this.
Look's great ! I use to use "Jolen" to put a streak in my hair. It work quick . I remember putting that stuff on my face because I had peach fuzz ,I don't think I needed it . It burned the crap out if my face and gave a great sunburn look .
Great video! I hate when ppl go on and on. You got right to the point! I think my hair is about the same natural color, I think. I'm a medium ash brown. I hope that I can find that jolen name brand. I'll let you know. Thanks for the great video.

😂
Can you do this for lowlights?
Oh pleeeeze let it be.. many of us appreciate the DIYs so buzz off..b'bye
@@suzieparis6821Exactly 😂😂 my sister is a master stylist as well. She owns her own salon in Manhattan NY. She herself is shocked at how well some people do their own hair at home with these simple tips that actually work. She says there’s always going to be someone that has something negative to say about anything and everything.
@@suzieparis6821, charming ! 😝
Literally I'm a hairdresser and you have made me want to try this.
Same
I’m a hairdresser too! I just love watching hair tutorials. She’s cute, has a great personality and is honest! I love it :)
Did any of you try it? Did it work just like balayage with a knife?
Please please help...I really need to know how I should dye my roots which are 2/3rds grey , and get the same color as my 1/3rd brown hair..obviously it comes 2 colors, lighter where there is the grey, and darker where there is the brown..which I then need to match with my copper dyed hair..I can never match them even when using the same dye color. Can you help me out? I can't afford going to the hairdressers every 3/4 weeks

Autumnoel So glad it worked for you!
You are adorable!! I’m trying this tonight!!🤗
I'm totally trying this! Last time my mom pulled hair through a cap and I could have cried it hurt so bad lol. I kept thinking beauty is pain.
Thank you! I used to buy regular home hair bleach kits, $15 or so, and use the brushes, and it
never quite turned out right. This is so easy, and cheaper!
I use this stuff too, works great for adding subtle yet beautiful blonde highlights!
so, so nice of you cant wait to try. i like the whole take of throwing everything behind you. very cute . made watching worth while with your personality and all. thank you for sharing with us all.
Thank you! Btw you’re awesome. Very real 💜
“Not bad for an at home job”
Lady, I’ve paid for highlights that haven’t come out as good as this lol it’s way better than “not bad”, trust me.
Agreed! My sis in law paid £60 last summer and still had half inch roots! (She's a bit timid so me an another sis had to drag her back to complain) ok, fair do- the salon fixed it for free, but hell! This aint bad at all!!!
I know, right??
Amazing idea and great lesson here. Thank you!!
You are fantastic. So down to earth and straight forward. I’ll be back. Your hair looks great.
I loved the knife technique ! I use t use Jolene on my roots until I left it on too long & my hair broke off at the roots -It looked liked a Mohawk! do not leave it on too long!
Janice Ellen Cosentino SAME! I wouldn’t recommend Jolene any longer than 5 minutes.
I can already tell this is going to be a video for me. I'm in need of a retouch
Worked out good for me! It was really, really easy and I'm happy with how it turned out! Thank you for sharing this video! 👍
You had me at “what’s in the box?”! I didn’t try the knife but you were fun to watch.
HA! I did this today and it worked perfectly! I followed your instruction followed by a toner and my hair looks great!
I'm trying this tonight. I am so scared but trust you after watching your video with the lightening powder and 40 developer. my friend's hair turned out great!! Thanks Lou, love watching you!
I am isolated because of Covid-19 and had to cancel my hair appt. I might try this... thank you so very much!
Wow! I didn’t know you could do that with fácil bleaching cream. I like the result!
Thanks for the tip!
Yes thats fine. Just no metal at all.
Not hair foil but Reynold's food foil is. Make sure you buy actual hair foil.
i always did with food foil ... so its a bulshit .. had never prob at all and i bet is the sme foil as the one for hair
Probably because this stuff is a lot milder then the bleach in the salon 💇
Isnt aluminum foil a metal too?
That is the best hair home treatment I've ever seen!! Great for adding time until your next salon visit. Thank You
Wait - how did u wash it out w/o scrunching the hair together and having bleach rinse through the rest of the hair? Thanks and terrific job!
i like how u toss all the supplies behind you like its no big deal such a nice laid back tutorial yet very informative thanks!
So incredibly simple. Thanks much. I tend to complicate stuff and then become overwhelmed to the point of not wanting to try something. I needed to see your method. Big hugs to you.
+Amelia Wilfinger Thank you! This is so easy, not overwhelming. :)
Absolutely the best video I've ever watched on TH-cam! It was sincerely a pleasure to learn from you.
+Venus1ntx Thank you!
thanks again
Love this, and you're so much fun to watch!☺
Sorry London was gloomy when you came it’s beautiful here today....😂
Hope you’re well n stay safe.....Thanks with love! 🙏🏼💕
I used to use that to bleach my mustache, then take what ever was left over and touch it to the waves in my brown hair. Every time was a different place but it created a lightened by the sun look.
Hi, with hairdressers closed with covid 19, I'm definitely going to try this. Tks for sharing.
Joan McKee me too... had to cancel my hair appt last week. 😢
Same!!
Loved the video, I would've never thought to use that stuff and finished result looked great! You're very easy to watch , your funny personality comes through and the music was better than that usual crap people put on their tutorials! I'm a new subscriber
Thank you!
I'm a hairstylist and have all the tools in my home to do this right now if i wanted to... I'm very tempted to try this technique on myself lol
Emilee Jean You can do it! The professional stuff might not be thick enough for this tho.
You’re going to put us professionals out of business! You did great! It’s amazing how nice of a blonde that turned out no orange. Who would have thought.
Wow, it came out so natural, soft and feminine. Great job!
10 seconds into the vid and i already subscribed lol you're so cool
Wow love this thanks going to try for my sisters hair and one of the best and easy diy I watched thanks beautiful
Omg going to get this, just what i need, i also hate that they never get close enough in the parting highlight. Thank you Thank you Thank you 😘👏💇♂️🧖♀️❤
It looks so natural. Beautiful. What a great idea. You're such a character:)
Third time touching up my highlights with your method! Fabulous 🤩 thank you soooo much!!!
WOW I thought i was the only one that used Jolen. I'll have to try the knife trick though. Great Job
Thanks for the awesome suggestion! Love it and did it today! It's WAAAAY easier and it'll only take me a couple tries to get a great technique going. Did a great job of lightening my roots! And it was super quick! Thank you! You made my weekend 😁
Saw another home highlights tutorial using top edge of plastic comb; might be an alternative to using metal butter knife (since 1 comment mentioned metal & bleach prods aren’t great combinations). But this is perfect, and cheap too - thx so much!
maybe a throwaway plastic knife too
I've watched your videos, they're so good. You are really creative 👌 I have a question though. Does this bleach cause graying of hair or any kind of damage if done once a month?
I liked that..its so easy..I never would have thought to use that bleach? Why not! Can't wait to try it and save myself money at the beauty shop shop
thanks!
I think it would be easier to use a thin paint brush, but this is very cool too!
I use an eye shadow brush . It's much easier to hold & v accurate.
What a genius idea I love that Lou I’m going to get Jolen tomorrow and give it a try xx
It looks like a quick, non messy natural hair highlights. Thank you!
I think I've found my spiritual meme, and to think it's on yoytube!. U remind me so much of me and how I interact with the world. Nice to meet u!
awesome, thanks. I used a popsicle stick but your demo was great.
Love it! My sis used to bleach her eyebrows to match her hair with Jolene! 😂
WTF I was like this women has lost her mind an almost didn't finish watching but I am glad I did because I am blown away at how good it looks!
I love it !!! You are very pretty and you did a beautiful job and made it look so easy !! Thank you !!🌴🌴❤❤
Thank you for your amazing trick. Your hair looks sensational. It's amazing how much money you can save when you DIY
this is so simple yet so smart!
So funny. I read article years and years ago. Kirsty Alley said this is what she used to get rid of brassiness.
i've been bleaching my hair for, mmmm, 50 yrs. DEAR LORD!!!! lol. anyhow. i've always been told not to use metal with bleach
Exactly. I cringed when I saw this
Aluminum is a metal
My thoughts exactly
Use a plastic knife
You can use the pointy end you part hair with of the hair coloring brush, or a toothbrush with bristles cut out to match desired widths.
absolutely genius
so the bowl, brush and developer you threw over your shoulder is the EXACT SAME THING THAT CAME IN YOUR DOLLAR STORE BLEACH KIT, ONLY SMALLER.what a dope.you don't have to apply with a brush, its there for mixing. you can apply with your freakin finger if you want. EXCELLENT tutorial for those who want the orange stripes in your hair like this guru has. good luck !
So true same
Wonder if this method would work doing dark lowlights on grey hair?
I'd love to see you maybe put a little toner or some purple shampoo after doing this! It might turn you more of an ashy/lighter blonde. I might try this.
Melfie 21 What is purple shampoo?
Look's great ! I use to use "Jolen" to put a streak in my hair. It work quick . I remember putting that stuff on my face because I had peach fuzz ,I don't think I needed it . It burned the crap out if my face and gave a great sunburn look .
Great video! I hate when ppl go on and on. You got right to the point! I think my hair is about the same natural color, I think. I'm a medium ash brown. I hope that I can find that jolen name brand. I'll let you know. Thanks for the great video.
I found it in couple places!
+Christy Bernard Great!
WHERE DID YOU FIND IT ?
+Fernando Ramos Kmart
It's usually bought as a mustache bleach.
Great video! Love how you tell what it is like youre talking to yourself.
