- two DIY options to fix orange hair from bleach.
*key points:
•to correct orange hair from bleaching, you can either lighten it again or deposit a demi-permanent color over it
•toners like T18 are meant for pale yellow hair and will not make much change to orange
•all hair has to go through stages when being decolorized (bleached)
•when you decolorize hair, you reveal the hair's undertone (these are usually reds, oranges, yellows)
•orange undertones happen when you are in the middle of decolorizing (about a level 5- level 1 is black, and level 10 is the palest yellow blonde)
•if you lighten it again, a lightener will be applied to the midshaft of the hair all over the head. Then, go back and apply it to the roots and the ends. The roots are saved for last because they lift faster due to the heat from your scalp- heat helps speed up the lighting process. The ends are saved for last to avoid any further damage
•to find the correct demi-permanent color to put over the orange, you start by finding the level (1-10) of the orange. You are looking at lightness or darkness, not tone (orange)
•if your hair is a level 7 ORANGE, you will want to find a hair color that is 1-2 shades lighter (to avoid compacting color and getting a darker result) and has BLUE in it. Blue is across from orange on the color wheel; they will neutralize each other. ASH (A) is blue in hair color. For example, you could use an 8A (level 8, ash) 8NA (level 8, natural ash) 8AA (level 8, double ash)
•Demi or semi-permanent hair color is recommended. It does the least damage to your hair and allows you to re-lighten it once it fades out.
•10 volume developer is used with demi-permanent color following manufacturer directions for application and processing times
•a blue shampoo is recommended to use weekly (if you have yellow hair, you will use a violet based shampoo)

As I sit here with orange hair from bleaching 👀👀
Charcoal hair conditioner from Sally’s. Use it every time you wash for at least 2 weeks. It might take 3. Keep the rest of the conditioner in case it tries to come back in 2 months, and always cover your hair with a hat when it’s sunny. You can try going hatless next summer.
@@schoolingdiana9086 thank you for the advice 😊

I’m on day 3 of trying to go from dark brown to red/pink. It’s a process 😭
Been there, done that.
From a professional that worked at salls and Yada place! One of the best vids. Instructor Level. ❤❤❤❤❤4sho.❤❤
Ok so this may never get a response but it may at least make some people laugh sooo... here we go...
I've been a studious student of Miss Genius Britt here (I literally can't get enough) and felt I knew my equations and color wheel so in the efforts to go from brassy blonde balayage to dark mushroom blonde I used all our girl's techniques and guidelines (except I used permanent.. regrets) to darken. It was perfection... technique on point even left myself some beautifully blended blonde ends but then instead of toning the orange I decided to use a blue deposit ... I've done it before ... but I switched brands. When I tried to rinse my the blue from my hands and the PAINT wouldn't budge I knew I was in trouble. Flash forward to high-pigment blue everywhere. Next up... 2 dawn dish soap washes and a panicked bleach bath. Now I'm blonde blue.. still hella splotchy. Decided to just go dark brown but ya girl watched the color fill video and I did the *right* thing and did a copper fill. Welp... the (permanent) brown I put over it didn't even touch the vibrant orange.. except in patches of course. So now I'm drenching my hair in deeeeep conditioners and slathering on cocoa color luxe to at least deepen the copper. It's helping but I have to do it every shower. I don't have the budget or patience for this. So I'm over here with my trashy damaged hair mourning my natural hair ... ironically.. the dark mushroom blonde. Oh and did I mention I cut my bangs? Hell hath fallen upon me. Can't stop thinking about pulling a GI Jane. Send restraints 🤟
I understand the battle, good luck to us both

Regretfully, I can relate to this! My hair has been orange (this time around cause it's happened before) for months! And here's the kicker - I'm cool toned, so it's making me look pale/sickly. I can hardly wait to watch this video!
Yup been there!!!!!!!! My friend taught me how to color but I’ve had some mess ups. Lol Thank goodness I have a ton of hair cause I can mess it up. Currently copper highlights trying to lighten the black from doing my grays. It’s a process. Good story.
I’m so glad you posted this! My hair was orange last week, and I did not want to re-lighten. I went to sally and grabbed Wella 8A permanent color to use with volume 10 developer. I wanted the Wella demi permanent color, but I didn’t see a level 8 ash. Anyway, the associate there was rude and said the level 8 would not work on how my hair and that it was too dark. I said I was fine with what I was using, and she rolled her eyes. She suggested I dye my hair a level 4 to fix it. Pfft. I eventually used Wella 8A permanent with a volume 10 developer, and my hair turned out beautiful! It’s a neutral beige light brown/ dark blonde. An easy fix when you have work the next day without using more bleach or dying dark brown.
There's only one Sally's within an hour of my house and I always dread going there 😬, just not a nice experience. Glad you got good results.
I no longer trust ppl at Sally's in store or online. Maybe there is a reason they aren't working in a salon
I can't be the only one who badly needs this video. Been battling orange hair since i bleached it in November- finally just dyed it brown. I can't afford salon prices anymore, plus last time I left a lot broker and with plenty of still orange hair. 😩
Thank you Britnee for all that you do. I will definitely be referencing this video a lot in future. ❤ you're the best! 😊
glad it could help!!
This is so helpful - thank you! Even just learning that ash = blue is game changing! Thanks again for these informative videos!
Learning all this for yourself is so fun. When I was younger I'd dye wool yarns and fabrics, later on I went at my hair. Love the mix of science and art.
I want to lighten my mom's grey hair with white highlights. Can you do a video on grey hair care and how to lighten it and keep from yellowing please!? We love your videos because there's always something cool❤
You always explain the process of bleaching so well. Thank you.❤
Love your classes, you make it easy to understand coloring
I must be the only weirdo who likes to get my hair to orange and then slap on some Adore in the red-orange-brown shades lol
no! intentional orange is beautiful!!
I actually love the orange but the orange doesn't love me😂. Brings out the redness in my face
I love orange/natural red colors, but they just don't work with my skin tone. It's also the same reason I don't wear orange shirts, which is that my skin turns a lovely shade of liver failure yellow when up against orange.
That “orange” hair is the color of my niece’s hair. She is a natural red head. She’s 8 years old and gets compliments every time she goes out in public!
natural oranges/reds are so beautiful ! she is lucky!
@@brittneealexushair her little brother is a redhead too. His is a little lighter ( so far ) he is 5. My mother is also a redhead She finally got her wish! 👩🏻🦰🧑🏻🦰
So sweet, love that 🥰
my hair always had orange tones ..even professionally bleached. so i just decided to go copper/ginger. maybe people think my hair is badly bleached now though haha.
This info video isn’t dissing orange hair.
You’re an amazing educator! Enjoyed watching 🥰
I love how simple you explains the levels ❤
This is literally the best video I’ve ever seen. ❤
Brittnee, can you do a video explaining the difference between the L’Oréal box colors and how you can transition to a more professional Color and what you recommend? Love love your videos
That would be awesome
Your videos have helped me do my hair at home. I did option two to darken a bad salon job. Thank you !
Love how you explained it!!!! 👏🏽👏🏽 thanks for sharing this helpful information.
I have been bleaching my own hair for years now, and there was ONE time where my hair went orange, only one. Usually it comes out yellow, but I've always been able to fix it.
One time I got sick and tired of the upkeep of being blonde, and I literally dyed it BLACK. My hair came out very dark and coppery, it looks awesome. But, after a while it gradually went lighter and lighter.
So, I guess I'm meant to be blonde lol.
Great video!
I have orange right now. I wasn't even trying to go blonde. I had box dyed it dark brown but it was too dark (almost black). Every video I watched suggested a bleach bath. I followed the directions exactly (1:1:1) well it didn't just lift a shade, it lifted like 3 levels and is now clown wig orange. So this video was extremely timely! I just bought more brown box dye but this time I got a level 6, however after watching this I am considering returning it for a demi permanent.
girl do it! I tried to cover mine with dark brown permanent and I got some serious hot roots and brassy ends and it's even more fried. wish I had this yesterday. I'm "fixing it" with color luxe chocolate brown but it's too temporary and still too warm. Considering using the platinum color luxe for more toning/canceling. All that to say... just listed to our girl lol. And good luck!
Wow, I’ve always struggled with figuring out the level when my hair at an orange stage. Your suggestion of looking at it like it’s in black and white is such a great tip! This is a really helpful video! 🫶🏼
You look beautiful. Love the green top on you 😊
Thank you for explaining this so simply, I think I watched a different video that I’m realizing said the same info just I had trouble understanding. It’s also nice to know I accidentally by chance did the right thing after my hair became orange from bleaching. I will wait until my hair is a little more healthy and decide if I want to go lighter.
I have to say thank you I’m learning so much from you
Girl where were you doing my c-19 orange hair craze?! 😂 this was so helpful!!!!
Very informative. Thank you! 🙏
I LOVE Wella’s Demi colors
So happy you said it’s ok to bleach again. Did a box bleach forgot to add the sachet that boosts it into the bottle so have awful orange hair now lol. I intend to go purple but needed to be blonde first.
You’re an amazing teacher. You have “it”.
thank you!
Great vid
This video is such perfect timing for me, thank you!
I just used high lift ion cool blond to lift my roots (after watching your videos) and they turned out a perfect level 7 light orange (from a solid level 2). Such a good result with one session at home. The rest is level 9/10.
I have been working towards a diy platinum/silver for years now, but working with semi permanents. I'm going demi to tone this time with Shades EQ, with a shadow root, again thanks to your videos. I think without seeing this I would have mixed it too dark. 😢
BTW, the shades I chose were 6T, 7V, and 8V, and of course clear. After watching this, I'm going to mix 1tsp 6T, 1tsp 7V, 4tsp 8v, a 6 tsp clear for the first go, roots first, ends last. I'll go back in for a shadow root if necessary if the orange isn't completely neutralized (which it probably won't be but that's ok).
Thank you for helping out us home hair obsessors!
Thank you for the video.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
finally! best video
Bold unique turned my yellow hair orange!
This was so helpful. My hair is definitely lighter than the video. I'd say two levels lighter , creamsicle orange, on my three inch roots and the inside of a banana color to the midshaft and down. In the shower today, there was some breakage for the first time ever. Thank goodness I have enough hair for 3 people- still not ideal though. I was doing my darndest not to overlap but alas- some must have. I do not want to bleach my roots again for fear that I get bleach on the rest of my hair and wind up with a mullet. I'm doing some protein and conditioning treatments tonight. If I didn't have an event to go to Saturday I'd leave it alone for a few weeks but I can't. I'm going to try my usual Ion Demi 9na. Probably do the roots first and then just very carefully bring it down into the rest. Judging by your video, I think it will work well. I'm a little worried the rest of my hair is too porous- so I might just wind up with a bob by the time this travesty is done. Nevertheless, this was a super helpful video. I wasn't sure if I should use a darker toner, than I usually use. So this helped me out ALOT.
Thank you
Try blondor brass kicker alone. Miracle formula. A ten percent or a 20 percent developer. It will come out lovely. And gives you time to rest and plot the next blonde move lol
I rarely see on videos about 10 vol mixed with toners causing hot roots, it always seems to be implied that if you're using 10 vol with colours on natural hair that no lift will happen. Definitely does for me at least! ha
Thank you! This is me right now. I have an Wella “activating lotion” and also a sh*t ton of the Saloncare 10 v developer. Would either of those work with the one you used?
I got some charcoal conditioner from Sally’s. It’s the only thing that took the orange out and kept it out. No amount of toner, lifter, etc, worked. I should point out mine was from using an imported Italian hair dye that had marigolds in it.
I lightened my hair last month and ended up with gold. What I really wanted was a soft pink. I used a bright pink dye and washed it off within a minute and it was perfect. But it’s such a hassle because I have so much hair to go through! Is there a light pink dye you recommend that would work on gold orange or a trick maybe add something to dilute it so I can do my whole hair at once? I really don’t want bright pink hair
QUESTION: have you made a video for making an Orange medium brown hair mistake cooler?
💥You Are The G.O.A.T.🔥
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻info thank you
I love your eyes
okay that was great, but what if i want to dye it a hot pink or muted purple? Will it be work to put semi permanent color on top of orange hair?
What about using a highlift such as the igora highlift 9.21 / 10.21,that could lift the color and help neutralize the orange? I ask this to see if this could be an option that could damage the hair less
I saw a different video before, so my first attempt to correct brassy level 8 highlights, I used level 8N Ion Demi with 10 developer on dry hair and it darkened it two shades down. The next time I used 7A permanent with 10 developer on damp hair. It worked well. I’m going back to my natural color. I’m tired of paying big bucks in salons and getting bad results. Be careful with bleach, ladies. Too much damage and upkeep and it’s difficult to do yourself. Demi works better.
I’am a new Subbie🎉✨💕
Magically, the orange looks so much better!
Probably a dumb question but if I use a level 10 developer with a permanent hair color does that make it a Demi permanent or just mess up the processing and end result?
Would you ever suggest using wella additive 050 that’s really blue based. I used to do that to make my hair gray then I’d fade into literally white white
Just curious?
What if we already colored our hair a permanent brown because our water is constantly depositing orange tones in the hair? I'm going to try the orange shampoo, but wondering about a toner when my hair is already a bit too dark for my skin tone, oops!
❤❤❤
Blue
Currently dealing with orange/ bright blonde spots and I used a pale ash blonde T14 on my hair after bleaching and there was no difference, it’s still yellow orange
Thank you for mentioning that ash is blue!! I've been searching for days for a level 9bv color and could only find ash 😅
Could you do a video explaining more about the way they name the hair colors?
YES! I need to do that, the color names are WILD and really don't make sense!
I look like I am black n blue bruised from blue and purple shampoo and conditioner. But great video .
I have natural brown hair that goes more medium brown in the summer and this year it decided to pull red/orange. How would I get rid of it? I'd like to stay with my natural color (whatever that is in the summer) but this red orange is not my favorite. Should I use a blue shampoo? Green? Something else? Help!
Use a good quality blue or black shampoo highly pigmented ones
I did this today before I say the video but I had purchased. 9cb. I read it was ash but I'm even more orange now. Came here to find out what to do. Guess cb is not ash. Was about to purchase a clariol 9AA😂.
Incase this may help someone I used a blue shampoo and let it sit a while and it helped tremendously and bought me time to figure out what to do with my hair

I will print your hair license off photoshop LOL!
Algol return this energy back to the maker of this video.
I am unsure what this means (I hope it's positive and would love to read about it if so) however, if it's negative, please let me know so I can improve in the future
I use fanola and it doesn’t stain for me - I use it without gloves in the shower - the fanola mask is crap!
What if I use an 9 ash blond?
If the hair is at a level 9, it will work. If it is darker than a 9 it will do very minimal change.
@@brittneealexushair roots are light
However I do have some orange spots by the mid section , i honestly don’t want to bleach again .
Thank you for replying your the best!
💁♀️💁♀️💁♀️💁♀️💁♀️💁♀️
Also you could foil the hair from the start and you may not have to bleach it twice. Lol
Where was the end result? I didn't see a neutralised orange. And how can a level 9 in blue work on a basic orange level of a 6 ? There's no way.....
AND THIS FOLKS IS WHY YOU! YES YOU!!!!! SHOULD GO TO A PROFESSIONAL IF YOU WANT TO LIGHTEN YOUR HAIR!!!
