I barely leave comments - but when I tell you I just tried this and my hair looks A1 I MEAN IT! I’ve tried doing this with different tools but the knife works. I’m shaken to the core! THANK YOU!!! This is a miracle.
I will say, I have light hair by nature so my hair takes to highlights perfectly and easily. I am just shocked.

Nothing annoys me more than when stylists cop that superior attitude towards DIY hair applications and start judging when you're sitting in their chair. I've been getting highlights for years and although some stylists do a nice job, I've also ended up with a big mess that I hated from stylists who just aren't that talented or careful. Once you get the hang of applying your own highlights, it's not rocket science and if you're careful it takes a lot to mess it up. Lou has beautiful hair and this application is saving her hours in a salon as well as about $100 or more in cash. Nice job.... it's a quick, easy application plus the bleach you're using is probably much safer for your scalp!

I am a hairstylist and this works well!! If stylists comment negatively it is because it works. As a stylist, alot of us do our own hair, but it is still difficult!! This was simple and it works!!

Thanks Lou!! I’ve never highlighted my hair by myself and after watching you, I’m going to give it a go. My husband has been cutting my hair for years. Nothing fancy. A trim straight across the bottom which he was happy to do and I trusted him. I decided I wanted something a bit more layered and so I went to a hairdresser yesterday which was really nice. I haven’t been feeling well for quite some time and it’s amazing what a haircut can do for you. I’ve been colouring my own hair for years because it’s so expensive to have it done. But I’ve been letting my natural colour come in to see what it looks like and I’ve decided I haven’t come to terms with my grey hair lol. I usually colour all of my hair because I haven’t got the patience to section it. We’ll see what happens when I dye it today! Thanks for sharing 🤩

I have been highlighting my own hair for years with OTC highlighting kits. I have really short hair and still it takes a couple hours or more to use the kit per cap and recommendations. When I ran across this video, I thought there’s no way it could be that easy. AND YET!!! Here I am just with highlighted roots that look so much better than with the cap. They’re more subtle. More natural. And it was so stinking easy! I may be seven years late on this video but that’s ok because Now I’ve seen the Light!!! Thanks so much!!

Here goes the 'hair stylists' ready to attack. I swear they go on every vlog and try to shame everyone who does their own hair. You did a great job!
Just because they have a cosmetology license, doesn't mean they're good at what they do. I've had so many stylists damage my hair before, after paying hundreds of dollars. Many times I've done a much better job than they did. And, without the damage and the crazy prices they charge.

HEY! Not all of us! Lol! There are those that do... I agree, some don’t know what they are doing... but there are always places where we all have strengths and weaknesses and just because you are trained for something, doesn’t mean you are skilled at it. My greatest strength with hair is actually the thing I had least training in... and that is braiding... I am good with color, quite good, but I still get stumped sometimes... we are also trained that henna is the worst, but I disagree... it is harder to control... but it gives the best red color...

Same here, I paid $80 to get a half head of highlights. They pulled my hair so hard half of it fell out a week later and they did NO highlights around my face or ontop so it’s like I literally did not change. That wasn’t my only bad experience. So disappointing. I have lost my faith in hairdressers and will be dying my own hair from now on.

Yep agree!! I had a person do my hair and I came home in tears that they had fucked up my hair so bad I had to redo it when i got home before my date was to pick me up for homecoming (years ago). And I spent a lot of money for nothing. Even the makeup she did had me looking like a hooker. “No offense to anyone”. If you have something that works for you then YOU DO IT! FYI, I’ve been doing my own highlights for decades... a box and a cap. I’ve had multiple hair dressers ask who did my highlights. When I tell them I did, they always make the super surprised face, and tell me what a good job I did. Yep... Saved thousands through the years.

I just want to say Lou,I’m a hairdresser too & I commend you for your superb idea of applying root touch up/highlights with a knife! It’s brilliant & ur great! I’ve been a hairdresser for 20yrs but unfortunately had to give up due to chronic pain. So you, my lovely Lou have helped me a great deal with ur fabulous idea of using a knife! I am stuck in the house with chronic pain anayway but now lockdown aswell. So I’m DEF going to use your brilliant idea of a knife to do my root touch up.Good on you Lou 4 helping others,I love to help others too.😀👍😘Just ignore all the ‘nasty pasties’....they’re just jealous they never thought of it!😂 Keep ‘being you’ & a huge heartfelt thanks for helping me when I’m stuck housebound & cant get to the salon. I’m soooo grateful! Luv & hugs Faye 😘👍😆Xxxxx

Hi Faye.....I suffer chronic pain too, amongst many other things. Being in lockdown is just normal for me, as it probably is for you too. It's even more stressful though, with all the potential virus on things. It would be good to hear how your highlights went. Am thinking of doing this too. I used to highlight my hair for years, using a cap, but as my health continued to deteriorate, it just got harder and more painful, until I couldn't do it any more. I usually have a home hairdresser do highlights every 7 weeks or so, and so am now getting fed up with my roots dominating my head! Lol
      Keep safe

Lou, I just really want to tell you how much I love your videos and how much they have meant to me. I have suffered from debilitating depression for most of my adult life. These past 2 years I've done pretty well in the fight against my depression. I use to go to the gym 5 days a week to lift weights and I was taking very good care of myself. But on February 8th I turned 47. I have no idea why this set me back, but I have been truly suffering emotionally since. I can't work because it has me almost emotionally crippled.
I discovered your videos and you have given me some much needed comic relief. I am in awe at not only your beauty on the outside, but also what a beautiful person you are on the inside. You make me and my husband laugh every day! Thank you! It especially touched my heart to hear that you suffer from depression yourself and that you had some sadness in your past. You know, I once heard that there is pain in laughter. That often the funniest people are the saddest. You obviously are not sad all of the time, but I do love that you are so honest and relatable. Thank you again. Your videos have brought some joy into my life.

I always color or highlight my hair, I am going to try 'the knife' method! I sometimes cut my hair using my curling iron as a guide--unplugged... I put the hair in and pull to where I want the length, then cut along that edge.... just like when I'm going to curl it... if that makes sense... well it works for me!!

I’m a hairdresser and have worked in LA , Las Vegas and now Tampa Florida and I’ve seen a lot of different things, but you know what you gotta do what works for ya, just because we’re hairdressers doesn’t mean we’re perfect either, and every hairdresser before they did hair, used boxed color at least once in their life prior to being licensed , so even if or when I have a client that used it at home or did things at home if it didn’t turn out right I’d never criticize because I’ve been there when I was younger as well. We’re in the profession to help and make sure the client is happy and the hair is healthy and beautiful. Not to criticize.

Did this with a wide toothed comb 40 years ago on my medium blonde hair, just using a bottled color and squeezing out the color onto the comb intermittently with a bigger "squeeze" at the tip and less down the twines (so more of the color came off closure to the roots). This is better as it's more precise. Later when my hair got too dark to do it this way, I just took random pieces (and if I could see where I highlighted it before I'd try and grab that piece just as you do) and I'd use a brand new mascara wand and put on the color. You mentioned that you don't usually do other parts and fold over the hair cuz you don't want to mess it up, but I would just let the color get dried a bit and the put a piece of foil (no folding, etc.) and just lay it on top of the foil when I pulled it over. Once the color really gets more dry, it's can't transfer much.

I love the technique! I have been coloring my own hair since I was about 15. I'm now 70! I have had several or at least a few unhappy salon coloring experiences and more than several unhappy haircuts from salons so I pretty much done my own hair for the last 20 years except twice and once was for my son's wedding which turned out nice- but expensive and that hair stylist was in Louisiana.. I'm in Colorado-but when I'm in the mood I enjoy cutting my own hair. I recently had a spot of scalp cancer and have been holding off doing my highlights until the skin healed. I'm not going to go all the way to my roots but I would still like some highlights. My hair grew out in a very dark brown and gray and light brown and maybe an ombre would work but I still want highlights at least in the front. Is that called the money part money look whatever I wanted to say that I love your sense of humor and I'm checking out all of your videos! So glad you don't pay attention to the trolls!

Thank you for this! I used your blunt knife technique today and it worked out well. My hair is naturally darker than yours (dark brown, not black), so I was nervous to use Jolen. I bought Revlon Color Effects Frost and Glow in Honey. I skipped the cap it came with, and just worked the bleach/developer mixture from that box. I used your knife technique and even just my fingers on certain strands in the back. I saw Jessie James Decker use just her fingers and gloves in a separate video. The combo of your knife technique and her finger technique were just what I needed for a little pick-me-up to get me by until I can see my hairstylist after this coronavirus quarantine. Thanks, again. Your hair looks great!

Update: I highlighted my hair on Saturday for the first time at home with the Revlon Color Effects. I used the knife and gloved fingers technique (no cap or foils) and it worked pretty well. I noticed that I missed a few spots. So on Tuesday, I touched up those spots with Jolen. My hair is naturally dark brown. I left it on for 35 minutes. I have some nice, blonde streaks. I plan to use a Brite No Yellow Mask in a few days. Thanks for this. It is a nice way to brighten things up before I can get to a salon.

Love this inventive trick! I, too, have a trick born of necessity. While traveling, I ran into friends who invited me to an evening get together. I desperately needed a quick touch up, but didn't have all the tools available. Luckily, the duty free shops supply free brushes, for trying on makeup. I grabbed a few, along with box of prefab lightening mix. The wands worked really well for a quick, root touch up; allowing more precision as well as thorough saturation of entire hair strands. It worked so well I continued using the technique. Like you, this is not the only tool I use for highlighting/coloring. Today my roots are crying out for attention. And, since I never know when I might be on a trip with no duty free in sight, I'm going to give your idea a whirl!
Future Trip: "Hello, room service, could I please have an extra butter knife?"

This product looks and works great on your hair. I have been debating doing highlights myself for months but haven’t had the nerve yet. Your knife technique looks like it gives you great control. I have very fine hair that’s darker than yours and I need almost full length highlights now so I will try your knife technique with a different bleach, doing a small strand test first. Thanks for giving me some courage and inspiration, and your videos are very entertaining as well!

Hey cutie Lou! I tried this with the knife and left you a positive comment. I do think you are very deft with your hands so mine didn't come out as well. I did use a plastic fork this time and it worked great!

This was a very good video, Lou! I had my hair done and I needed a few more bright stripes so this technique is the perfect solution for me. Your technique and instructions were best in this video. You answered all my questions about amount of chemicals and length of processing time too. Thanks

You can also use a wide tooth comb and just make sure the teeth of the comb are coated with bleach mixture. Maybe not ideal but I can say personally that it works well.

Thank you so much for this tip! I just tried it now, & it defo works (i have very dark brown hair, almost black & the roots were begining to show) It has defo lightened my roots (left it on for 20 mins) & that was all I needed it to do! Thanks again! 👏🏻👍🏻

Thank you. When I have $10 and not $70, I do my highlights or just color my whole head. I use Nutrisse or another color is not tested on animals. I didn't use a knife, I used a toothbrush. But I appreciate your video, and your hair looks great!

The reason leaving it on longer didn’t do anything is because bleach runs it’s course and stops processing. Usually 20-25 min it’s done processing. So if your hair is very dark, and you’ve bleached your hair and it’s orange. It’s because your hair is too dark and has to be double processed. Super damaging. Hair had a spectrum of color it goes through when lightening. Bleach is so harsh and it’s does take a very skilled colorist to pull dark hair to a desirable shade of blonde. I would only try this if your hair is light enough you only need a few shades lighter. Otherwise you may end up very orange or brassy. If you have lighter hair, this is such a cool way of quickly getting your roots touched up. The other cool thing about bleach is it stays where it’s put. It doesn’t expand like hair color does.

I worked at Sally Beauty and you wouldn't believe the amount of people, mainly women, who bleached their dark hair and it turned out orange and the had to bleach again. It's very very common.

If you ask me I’d say whatever hair job you get whether it’s the salon or an educated guess at home you get pretty much the same results 😂 has long as it’s not legitimately like polka dots and splotches on your head id say it looks pretty darn good and will work out no matter what route you take.

Funny, how disturbed you have made so many hairdressers. But it works well for you, so why not? I used to use a hair color from the drugstore when I was younger (Was it Clairol Color Castings, Light Ash Blonde?) that gave me the prettiest blonde that even fooled a hairdresser who thought it was my natural color. Of course, it was discontinued and now I pay a ridiculous amount to get a similar color from a salon.

Mandala effect- didn’t that Jolen bleach used to have an ‘e’ at the end? My mom used to use it, and also sang Jolene!
I just bought a store kit yesterday because Christmas is in 5 days and MY roots are screaming! I never thought to use Jolen bleach!
What a great idea, with the knife!🙏🏻💕

Girl I’ve notice hair dressers fly over the railing about diy unprofessional tips! My sister is hair dresser and I’m not I’m self taught and she teaches me a lot to but my unconventional things I’ve descovered over the years and my sister trusts me doing her hair! I love videos like yours not all of us can afford to go to the hair dresser! I have very thick hair if I went to the salon for color and highlights they charge me $200 I can’t even afford 100$ last time I went to get my hair trimmed they charged me almost $50 that was just a cut not a wash or styled after just a cut and she didn’t even thin out my hair it looked horrible I had to fix it myself 🤦🏻‍♀️ so screw the haters Queen keep doing you! 🤟
