To break it down, route everything to your mixer and adjust the gain knob so they are all hitting around the same db. Around -9 to -12 db. Then mix by utilizing your faders in the mixer. The further down the fader goes, the more db it will decrease by...so its more precise to have your faders zero'd out to work from there. Another important reason is some VST's don't like/react/work well with hot signals.
C'Trill Beatz negative, gain stage first, then level the beat, then do your mixing(in mono) when you do things like EQ and saturation from plugins it can raise or lower the volume of the sound, just adjust your output gain of the vst to make it match the original db
Also another useful way to quickly gain stage tracks is by using the rule of 3s. If a track is too loud try lowering it by either -3 dB, -6dB, -9dB, -12dB, -15dB. If you need to go quieter than try lowering by 1dB until you reach a desired level.

One thing I see he didn't mention was panning. Panning is important just as well as gain staging. Panning gives instruments space you don't want ALL your instruments straight up the middle.
@@contra-bassrecords874 Gain refers to volume, and panning is the control of volume between the left and right. It's absolutely a part of gain-staging. If you look at the mixer in this video, the sounds he's using are actually panned to begin with.
@@bl6628 gain and volume aren't the same if you wanna get into semantics. Gain staging is important for allowing headroom and creating the correct dynamics before dynamic processing. Panning doesn't affect either of these therefore it seems irrelevant. Feel free to change my mind.
Instead of messing with the master fader, you can put a balance plugin on the master chain before mixing and turn it down to -24 db and turn up headset/speaker volume to compensate. After you're done creating everything take off the balance and you have around -6 db of headroom instantly.
Summary: How to mixer and master: 1. Put all sounds in a mixer (different) track. 2. Go to volume knob and put the volume down or up so (the highest volume) hits -12 Db. 3. Make sure you do this with every sound. 4. Do some relative level mixing (moving up and down knobs in mixing tracks). (REMEMBER: TURN UP MASTER FADER , guarantee headroom) 5. Add a limiter (Fruity limiter or iZotope Maximizer). 6. Turn down Threshold and Character. Thank you KC!

Hi, thanks for the tips, anyway is it possible to have a video where you talk about setting the limiter right in order to get the desired loudness? There's a new standard for measuring it, I don't remember the name now, it must be something like lufs. I've heard that the final level must be kept at - 1db from the ceiling to avoid clipping when converting to mp3, or another sampling frequency (like from 44.1khz to 48khz). Also, seems that TH-cam, Spotify and all the digital distributors have their lufs value to be used.. Thank you
✓Set everything initially at -12db tweaking the source volume knobs ✓Fader tweaking process after putting the master fader to the fullest for headroom: Kick: -6 db Sub bass/bass: -15 db ish Hi hats: - 15 db ish Claps: -12 db Rim/percs: -15 db ish 808: -12 db ish (a little less) Melody: -15 db ish Counter melody: -18 db ish Counter melody 2: -21 db ish Pluckings: -15 db ish ✓Then, reset master fader to initials and add ozone 5 (maximizer) or any maximizer and increase the volume to perfection.
U should be using a VU Meter with a 200-300 Ms Delay The Default Mixer doesn't accurately meseaure the Volume in a Real Life Setting. The RMS should be around -16 dBFS to -18 dBFS And yes. Peak around -12 dBFS This video is great. But when mixing drums and checking your levels... It can throw people off ESPECIALLY if they don't check there mix in mono. Just something for thought. Thank you man!!! Really this was helpful tho!
Briello on Fl Studio 20, I use the Gain and Eq effect on the channels to roughly get to the optimal volume. As long as it sounds good and doesn’t kill the rest of the sounds I think its fine.
You can use this gainstaginh technique and then turn up the pre amp vol on the sample where you adjust the lfo and pitch. When you do that it will stay at -12db but you can make it louder.
From what I understand, every time you add a sound, you create its pattern and then gain stage said pattern. From there, once you add another sound and pattern, you gain stage again. And then can mix the new sound. If this is done properly, you can gain stage and mix throughout making the beat! :)
Gain stage every sound to -12db
Turn up the Master fader 12db

Absolutely but it has nothing to do with gain staging.
Nice trick to raise the master bus.. thanks for sharing..nice beat too!
i gotta say that beat in the intro/outro of the video is sick
KC is literally the only one that actually teaches you something from the internet money group .
The beat in the background to fire I cant concentrate
Just put reverb on everything and your mix is good to go 🥴🥴
You forgot soundgoodizer
awww shit fax
EQ every instrument could be good to
@@bastiendstf eq in mono
Soft Clipper too
Instead of messing with the master fader, you can put a balance plugin on the master chain before mixing and turn it down to -24 db and turn up headset/speaker volume to compensate. After you're done creating everything take off the balance and you have around -6 db of headroom instantly.
God bless you bro..your video is helpful
Summary:
How to mixer and master:
1. Put all sounds in a mixer (different) track.
2. Go to volume knob and put the volume down or up so (the highest volume) hits -12 Db.
3. Make sure you do this with every sound.
4. Do some relative level mixing (moving up and down knobs in mixing tracks).
(REMEMBER: TURN UP MASTER FADER , guarantee headroom)
5. Add a limiter (Fruity limiter or iZotope Maximizer).
6. Turn down Threshold and Character.
Thank you KC!
Wouldn't recommend fruity limiter. Good for comp but it sucks ass at limiting. Any free limiter dose a better job then fruity 😅
When i have to do eq and compression?
Damn! This helped a ton just now! Such a huge difference doing this. I can't wait to actually go into the full mix of my current project! Thanks so much!
I keep coming back for more information then i get stuck on how fire this beat is. Nice vid
This is the real mixing tutorial.... thanks so much for this
I just learnt something new that will improve my overall mixing techniques. Thank you Admin.
i'm a fairly new musician and i've done this before even knowing it was a thing..lol oop.. i guess i'm off to a good start, but great! advice and vid take notes.
wow youre so cool bro!!
Damn my kicks and 808s are hitting and it SOUNDS CLEAN!! Thank You 🙏🏾
Hi, thanks for the tips, anyway is it possible to have a video where you talk about setting the limiter right in order to get the desired loudness?
There's a new standard for measuring it, I don't remember the name now, it must be something like lufs. I've heard that the final level must be kept at - 1db from the ceiling to avoid clipping when converting to mp3, or another sampling frequency (like from 44.1khz to 48khz).
Also, seems that TH-cam, Spotify and all the digital distributors have their lufs value to be used.. Thank you
Thank you for walking through the entire process! Catchy beat too!
What a nice simple way to get that loudness, I might try this
✓Set everything initially at -12db tweaking the source volume knobs
✓Fader tweaking process after putting the master fader to the fullest for headroom:
Kick: -6 db
Sub bass/bass: -15 db ish
Hi hats: - 15 db ish
Claps: -12 db
Rim/percs: -15 db ish
808: -12 db ish (a little less)
Melody: -15 db ish
Counter melody: -18 db ish
Counter melody 2: -21 db ish
Pluckings: -15 db ish
✓Then, reset master fader to initials and add ozone 5 (maximizer) or any maximizer and increase the volume to perfection.
Thank you for this information. I would like to ask what should be the db of the vocals before and after adjusting the master fader
U should be using a VU Meter with a 200-300 Ms Delay
The Default Mixer doesn't accurately meseaure the Volume in a Real Life Setting.
The RMS should be around -16 dBFS to -18 dBFS
And yes. Peak around -12 dBFS
This video is great. But when mixing drums and checking your levels... It can throw people off ESPECIALLY if they don't check there mix in mono.
Just something for thought.
Thank you man!!! Really this was helpful tho!
DAMON DAHL MUSIC could we get a tutorial on this from you bro
Whats the Best stock & 3rd Party Plugin To Use as a VU Meter With A 200-300 Ms Delay???
@@usopetersen You just might. No promises though.
I honestly put a soft clipper and make my kick clip a lot so it knocks and then I mix everything else. Is it good?
Briello on Fl Studio 20, I use the Gain and Eq effect on the channels to roughly get to the optimal volume. As long as it sounds good and doesn’t kill the rest of the sounds I think its fine.
You can use this gainstaginh technique and then turn up the pre amp vol on the sample where you adjust the lfo and pitch. When you do that it will stay at -12db but you can make it louder.
Best tutorial by far on gain staging and leveling
This actually works. Just did it on my newest project. Changed the game.
when you’re making the beat do you reset all the levels to gain stage? because i somewhat mix while i’m making the beat
From what I understand, every time you add a sound, you create its pattern and then gain stage said pattern. From there, once you add another sound and pattern, you gain stage again. And then can mix the new sound. If this is done properly, you can gain stage and mix throughout making the beat! :)
i wonder how many superproducer still watching yall videos haha
WHEN I TELL YOU I HAVENT CLICKED A VIDEO SO DAMN FAST!!!!!!
annacloud lmao fr same
The beat used in this tutorial is hard 🔥
