    Grass compost works great. Your pile is doing well and I'm sure you'll have fantastic results with it... I've got a big yard, and have a lawn sweeper and have composted grass clippings several times with great success. Neither myself or my neighbors spray any type of chemicals on our lawns, so there's really nothing to worry about. And that nice hot pile will surely kill any type of weed seed that might be in there, so it's really a great way to improve your soil. I know Ray from the Praxxus55712 always uses grass compost and I've used his method several times with great results... Likewise, I've used Reaganite71's Drunken Composting method of turning Grass clippings into Garden Soil in 14 Days! by using Beer, Cola, & Ammonia and it works terrific ..... Best of luck to you!

      Tim Huffman Hello Tim, sounds like you have it dialed in with the grass clipping compost pile! I've had great success with leaves in the winter, but I am certainly sold on the grass clipping pile now! I do like Reagnite's method and use it at times as well. Works great and produces some great compost FAST! Thx for stopping by!

    I noticed this composting area is in the shady part of your home. Is this the preferred way to do composting or just the best place you had? I'd like to build mine away from the house closer to my 20x20' garden, but that would put it mostly in the sun and I wasn't sure if that would wreck the process or anything.

    Dear Mr. & Mrs. CaliKim,
    Thank you for all you do. Searching YT for ideas on drip system for a garden I am trying to build I came across your channel and after numerous hours of learning I had to take a moment to say thank you - and I've also subscribed.
    Mr. CaliKim, I love your videography work. Sometimes I wonder if you have as much fun as Mrs. CaliKim during filming...
    I am building a greenhouse for my garden. Last year I planted Kale, Broccoli, Carrots, Cucumbers, Celery & this year I'd like to ad Ginger to the list. Kale & Broccoli produced in abundance. In fact, most everything produced well. Some of the Kale, however, became ill - hence the greenhouse.
    Here in the central valley - Tulare, CA the land is fertile and the sun brutal. From seeds when do I begin the process?
    Any help is nice.
    Will continue to learn.

      Paul Pauly Awesome, Paul, thx so much for watching and subscribing! So glad you are here, and we look forward to more interaction with you! And Mr. CaliKim, aka, Camera Guy does have fun filming, he loves using his gear. Your greenhouse sounds great - sounds like you had a wonderful variety last year! Good luck growing in the brutal heat there, but sounds like you are doing a wonderful job! I start my seeds in January and have several videos about this process, you'll have to check them out when you have some time!

      +a1930ford Hi there - glad you are enjoying the videos! why do you cover the pile with the tarp? Do you recover after turning it each time? I thought the stuff needed oxygen to decompose...perhaps it gets enough from around the edges of the tarp? thanks for your videos.

    so I have a question.. what if I collect dead leaves, grass and food scraps in a medium size bucket like 20 lt and just shaking it once in a while and of course add the needed moisture.. will it work? what do u think

    What if your lawn clippings has some weeds and dandylions in it will they grow in your garden?

    • @PlanktoniusRex
      @PlanktoniusRex 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes seeds will often carry along with the compost. Also be careful with any insecticides or chemicals that may be on the grass if you want to stay organic. I have used layered oak leaves, discarded foods and grass cuttings and have had some weeds but I pull them out as soon as they poke their heads out.

    I was pretty sure it would be hot. Im like you hope it dont burn down your house. I have never seen grass clipping catch fire. But I have seen a hay barn catch fire one time. They guy was really removing the bails with his tractor. We had just arrived when it started.

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      shartne I do check it everyday and if it seems to hot, I open it up and let it cool down. I have heard of those hay barns self combusting . That would not be good. Thx for stopping by!

      I'm not sure if a compost pile can get "TO HOT"... I try to get my pile up to 160 degrees for 3 to 4 days then turn it every other day to keep it cooking evenly and I have rich compost in 18 to 20 days from the start.
      I have a compost thermometer but any kitchen thermometer will work. "It's in the soil".

      Hi, Chip! Thanks for the tip- sounds like a method that has worked well in your garden! What are you planning to grow this gardening season? Thanks for watching!

    • @carpate
      @carpate 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      G'day Ms CaliKim29. You're most welcome, and thanks for the reply!
      The added sugar "hypes" up the digestive bacteria and fungus, and cuts my compost time down to about a week, two weeks tops. I also make sure to keep coffee in there for the addition of caffeine. My piles will actually steam when you turn them over due to the energy inside. That gray matter in the grass clippings is the fungus I seed throughout the pile. The debris from my aquarium filters provide the bacteria. I mean, it's already present in the ground, I just know where to harvest large quantities to kick start the compost party.
      Except, one trick. The soil is contaminated with lead here so I can't grow in the ground; can't compost on the ground. Heavy urban area, years of lead paint flaking off very old homes, etc. I only get about 7 hours of direct sunlight, you're always in a shadow with homes this close together.
      As for what I'm growing, I'm square foot gardening in 4 raised beds for vegetables. Far too many varieties to list in only about 35 square foot of space. The compost is vital to keep this many plants as close as I have them. The excess compost goes towards my flower beds, I enjoy the hummingbirds visiting.
      I believe it was one of your videos I just watched covering arduino based gardening. I've been programming those buggers for years now, and have since moved on to higher level microprocessors for robotics. However, I have a revision for my old gardenCore system coming up, maybe I'll get the go pro out and share.

      Chip Bacis I sprout beans and they get hot. I'm sure bean soaking and rinse water would accelerate a compost pile as well and it's a waste product anyways.
