Here is a tip for you viewers...if during the short ad you scroll down and hit the 'like' button, by the time you get back up to the video, the ad is almost over and you have helped in two ways, by letting the ad play all the way through, and hitting the 'like' button. Its the least we can do to help pay for all of the hard work done in making these informative videos that we all enjoy and learn from.

Thats really a great idea! I'll be trying that out, most of the time i skip the add if i can. I find them really annoying and the sound is usually really loud. But i didn't put thought to the fact that its the ads what help keep these fine video's coming. And off course the good people who make them!!

Great video and it has reenergized me to start composting once again. BTW: A little tip with leaves. Instead of raking, I mow them with the bagger on and combine with my grass clippings. Probably less exercise, but a heck of a lot faster than raking..

I thought composting would be too hard but these two videos explain it in a way that makes it so simple. I will be starting my compost tomorrow - I really enjoy your videos as they provide wonderful advice. Sonny from New Zealand - started gardening 4 weeks ago and completely addicted now.

I've been composting like this in a small space for quite awhile. What this shows, and I hope people pick up on, is that you don't need a big compost pile like many of the videos on youtube show. This can be done in a pretty small space.

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Jim S Way to go, Jim - thanks for the feedback. Many people do not have tons of space and can't collect the materials needed for a huge pile. It might not get as hot as a large pile, but it does the job I need it to do. So many ways to garden, right?

Hey, THANK YOU! You got me motivated. My compost has layers of grass clippings leaves old manure veggies egg shells coffee grounds chopped debris water and covered with a tarp.
Today is day 4, for me and it is cold here 23 last night.
The temps were still at freezing when I went out and turned the pile. The tarp had ice on the lower parts by the ground when I removed the tarp the mound was moist on top. I took a garden rake and pulled the top off and steam started coming off of it and continued as I raked it into a new pile and covered it again.
    Again Thank you,
I think it may need a little more water but my hose was frozen

Peter Stewart how exciting, Peter! isn't is fun to see the steam come off the pile? A true sign that you were successful at making hot compost! And I'm sure in 23 degree weather, that steam is much more dramatic than it is here. Best of luck, your garden will love your home made compost! OneYardRevolution has an awesome video on how to water a compost pile without turning it - check it out if you have time. Thx for the feedback!

    Awesome video.
Quite informative and definitely motiving. I believe I shall try my hand, once again, at composting.
I see what I did wrong the first time around. I did not turn it over and as a result, the pile simply dried up.

Hi Kim. Thanks for all the videos you've sent out recently. Good stuff. In answer to your question from my comment, no I had not visited your Website as of then, but I sure have now and I did request your Garden Guide. Looking forward to getting that! Now, for my compost--on Mother's Day, my Husband built me a 4' X 6' wooden square (exactly like yours, lol) and along with the kitchen scraps, coffee grinds, eggs, a couple bags of grass clippings, my neighbor worked in his yard all weekend and cut down some trees. I really racked up! I got branches and leaves that were not only enough for my first composting effort, but next time's also! I started my compost pile last Monday, exactly like you said. It rained here in Texas for a few days but I've checked, turned and watered it twice since then. Wow is it working! This morning I took the tarp off and it stunk at first, but as I kept turning it over, I really think I could smell that rich soil. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

love your vids. I started composing 40 years ago when there was little information except various university studies that said you needed to mix everything in precise proportions, and I learned that is not true, as have you, the key is just do it and find what works best with your conditions. My youngest daughter is taking an ag class and they are still teaching precise proportions. keep up the good work and get the word out.

vincent1836 I wholeheartedly agree- gardening is all about trial and error and finding what works best for you. But most important of all - just doing it! Even if you don't have all the "perfect" materials! Thanks so much for your comment, Vincent!

Our township has a composting field where everyone takes grass clippings and leaves then every fall they grind it up and leave a huge pile for all to take. Pretty good stuff but I still mix it with grass clippings.

Kim, nice update, keep it up.
Here in Nor Cal we have no lawns because of the drought, So I gave away my mower(s), I never knew on how much time I spent behind the mower until I no longer had 3 lawns to mow. And the $$ savings on the water bill are awesome. :)
Sorry to see the gopher cam got nicked..

Thanks so much, I've learned a lot from your videos. Just started my compost pile in Tennessee and can't wait to start using compost instead of buying soils and potting mix at garden centers. Can you start seedlings with compost.

One thing I do in my compost pile is I stand a 4 ft. long piece of perforated pvc drain pipe vertical in the center of my bin. Then I pile my layers around it. the pvc let's air circulate into the center of the pile and I can also add water in the pipe and it will leach into the pile. It seems to speed the process up for me.

I don't have a lot of space for a real compost pile, but for the last several years I've had a lot of success with plastic garbage cans. I first drill a bunch of holes (5/8" or 3/4") along the sides and 5 or 6 in the bottom. I then dump the makin's in, and turn the can upside down somewhere in my garden. As I accumulate food scraps, coffee grounds, etc., I put them in a grocery bag and freeze them. When I fill up a bag , I take it out and put it on the can to thaw. When that's done, I pull up the can and flip it over. I dig into the bottom of the pile and dump a foot or so of it into the can. I take what was on top of the pile, plus whatever I'm adding to it and make a pile small enough for the trash can to fit over it. I then flip the can back over and I'm done until I full up another grocery bag.
It sounds more complicated than it is. I actually spend less time doing it than it took to write the last paragraph. Over the years, I've changed the soil in my garden from the North Carolina red clay I started with to something you might see in Illinois or Iowa.
