    I remember Gareth Edwards recounting when he asked Kathleen Kennedy if they could kill off the main characters in this movie. He said that she replied, "You can do whatever you want." I feel like that statement from Kennedy is somehow both the key to Rogue One's success and also the key to the sequel trilogy's failure.

    • @matthewwheeler469
      @matthewwheeler469 2 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      @@MegaSpideyman Yep, because Abrams and Johnson were allowed to do anything they wanted with their respective films. Turns out that can be a problem when working with two different people who have very different ideas. But it also worked as an advantage for Rogue One, because it was just one movie, and the creative minds were given freedom to work.

      What it indicates to me is that Kathleen Kennedy has not a single creative bone in her body, and will just happily go along with what any director/producer on her payroll floats her way. This can be 50/50 in terms of who is actually floating the ideas. Which is why we have just as many "Mandolorians" as we do "Last Jedis" under her watch.

      @@jacob4920 Agreed. I personally think that, as president of Lucasfilm, she should've taken the initiative in getting someone to create a plan for the sequels that had to be followed. It might not have made them a masterpiece of a trilogy, but at least everyone would've been on the same page.

    I was 8 in 1977 watching ANH. Watching R1 at times almost felt like I was seeing deleted scenes from ANH. It felt like I was back in 77 again. (And I feel like I could just sit and watch them construct the Death Star for hours!) I watched it with my son and really just bridged 2 generations for me. Times during R1 I could picture Luke on homestead before we officially meet him, or Han and Chewie getting ready to head to Mos Eisley from wherever they are right before. It really fit in well ! Sadly most of the rest of Disney SW has fallen WAY short .

      Agreed....I was 5 in 1977 and saw ANH opening day at the theater and I think they nailed it with Rogue One in tone and content and as you said often times I felt like I was watching deleted scenes that didn't make the final cut. In my opinion R1 stands head and shoulders above anything else Disney has released in the SW franchise....with the exception of Clone Wars Season 7 which was exceptional. Small sidenote...Thor mentioned the Catalyst novel....I highly recommend reading that book because it expands on so many parts of Rogue One and really gives so much more weight to an already well written story and characters. I would go as far as saying Catalyst is one one of the top 5 (definitely top 10) best SW Novels...certainly one of the best released since Disney's acquisition of the IP. Cheers my friend

      I'm one of the few idiots who thinks that bringing back Grand Moff Tarkin, even in bad CGI, was a good move. Because the actor who played his physical stand-in, and voice work, was outstanding in his own right, and really did that character justice. Tarkin's overall role in the following film is not ruined, if anything, it is reinforced.

    Not only is Rogue One a great addition to the movies, but it even enhances A New Hope, the Death Star is made even more threatening and the final battle to destory it made even more intense even when ya know the outcome.
    Also the final battle is great at showing a good balance between the factions, both sides really show their strengths, and in the end they succeed but at tremendous sacrifice.

    An aspect I really loved about Rogue One was how much it enhance the original trilogy with Deathtroopers, the new Imperial droid, new tie fighter, U-Wing. It united the old and the new by bringing back Red and Gold leader, with cameo from rebels with Chopper and the Ghost and Saw Garrera being the leader of a more radical version of the rebellion. This movie made the star wars universe richer

      Saw Garrera, amazing "radical" leader, lets himself die for no reason. Same with Andor, he is introduced as someone with nothing to lose, but he gives up while on his first mission, which doesn't even matter because X-wings fly in and do the job for him. The movie had promise but it didn't follow anything through.

    "Princess Leia receiving the plans was a good lead-in to ANH" I only partially agree with you, here. Leia receiving the the plans and making her speech about hope is all fine and well, but the scene where Vader wreaks havoc in the corridor leading to her ship and watches it flee completely destroys the beginning of AHN. For any of the dialog between Leia and Vader in AHN to make sense, she has to have been ambushed, basically on circumstantial evidence. The way it is now, Vader would just say "I watched your ship blasting away from the battle at Scarif just 10 minutes ago". It's dumb.
    If I could rewrite Rogue One retroactively, I would have Vader only come in at the very end, sent by the Emperor to solve Krennic's little infiltrator problem. This would allow Krennic to blossom as the villain of the movie until the end, instead of being overshadowed by Tarkin and Vader. Leia's ship would be waiting out in deep space to receive the plans, but when things go sideways, the Rogue One team decide to transmit to Leia's ship directly from the surface, maybe relaying the transmission through the Rebel capitol ship in orbit instead of Leia's ship being inside of it. The Rogue One team would get to the comms room in Imperial base and Rebels on the surface would be defending the corridor to the comms room to buy them time to transmit the plans to Leia. Then Vader comes and wipes the defending Rebels out, just like in the movie, except it's on the surface of Scarif. Vader breaks into the comms room, only to see "Transmission Complete" flash on the screen as he walks in. He never sees the ship that received the plans, but the transmission gets traced by another Imperial ship in the battle and Leia's ship gets ID'd, although perhaps not with 100% certainty, which sounds much more like what Vader was accusing Leia of in ANH and gives Leia the plausible deniability she needs to not sound like a moron when she confronts Vader in ANH.

    Rogue One put the war in Star Wars. And for that, I loved it. Grounding the Star Wars universe isn't a bad thing. While I love seeing the Jedi and Sith duke it out, the galaxy is filled with regular people who have interesting stories. Telling some of those stories is a good thing. Even in the EU we had plenty of that.

  • @The_Brickster

    This movie is still my all time favorite theatre experience. Even No Way Home and Maverick couldn't compete. There is something about the tension of the plot, the flawed yet relatable characters, the action, and one of the best space battles to ever grace the screen that made it so dang good. The large bag of Reese's Piece's I found stuck in my seat might've also had something to do with it.
    I'm also a big fan of shows like Band of Brothers. This gave me that vibe. A movie about forgotten grunts who worked in the shadows of the rebellion doing the dirty work, who in the end all pay the price. Rarely do you see any piece of media brave enough to kill off literally all of its main characters. It truly left an impact on me. All in all though, definitely Disney's best effort. I rewatch this movie every few months when I want to just sit back and enjoy something.

    I really liked this film; much better than the sequel trilogy for all the reasons you mentioned. Jyn Erso was tough, but not a Mary Sue and it's believable given what we see of her background. The only negative for me was that the first thing the Rebel leadership does after finding out about Galen and the Death Star is to order an air strike to kill him. Rather strange given that it is Galen who informs them of the Death Star's one weakness. One would think having an informant working within the Empire's research division would be a good thing to have. But given the anarchy behind the shooting of this film, I guess the truly amazing thing is that there aren't more problems with the film.

    • @benjaminroe311ify
      @benjaminroe311ify 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Even what you list here isn't really a problem or plot hole. Cassian recieves the order from who is presumably his commanding handler seperate from Bail and Mon Mothma to assasinate Galen Erso. Remember Jyn is the only one that sees her father's message that there is a weakness in the plans that he placed in the design. Cassian and the others don't hear this message. So after the Holy City on Jedha is destroyed they go straight to extract Galen for questioning. (Cassian to kill them) The same rebel commander feels it's best to murder the engineers working for the empire there via airstrike...not to count on Cassian killing Galen and just Galen etc. Anyway, the rebels didn't even know the Death Star was completed or fully built etc. There was confusion and only Jyn who wasn't fully trusted by Andor, Mon Mothma, Bail or this other commander trusted Jyn. The only one that knew that Galen had potentially programmed a weakness other than Jyn were her companions. Galen only informed Jyn and then the message was lost. The main rebel leaders wouldn't think they had an informant. So it's really not a problem. In fact this part of the plot is masterfully written as it's a good illustration of the "Fog of War" Jyn was hardly even part of the alliance but she happened to have the most important part of information, that had the rebel commander had it... he certainly wouldn't have wasted ships and resources on an airstrike and likely would have authorized the extraction of Galen not the extermination of Galen. But he didn't know. Also Mon Mothma and Bail didn't know. "Fog of war"

    That Saving Private Ryan homage when a bazoka fails to bring down a Walker and then it gets destroyed by a X-Wing? The smile on blue leader’s face after that was the most Star Wars moment in SW since the OT - as in “they got it!” - sadly we soon learned Rogue One was an anomaly. While not perfect and understanding there are different “tastes”, I can’t believe all the shit this film got.

    I really liked Rogue One. One of the best star wars films. I really liked the dark, more serious atmosphere. Loved Forest Whitaker as Saw Gerrera, but sorry to see his story arc stop at this moment. I really wish that Disney would have kept this atmosphere in their movies but unfortunately they chose what they chose… Seeing what started with Rogue One I was really excited for what was about to come. Boy, was I surprised 😅

    Don't take it personally but it really pisses me off when people say that the death star having a thermal exhaust port is a "plot hole." It has a purpose. Space ships and stations in real life need to be able to vent their heat because they generate a lot. It makes sense that it would be connected to the reactor because that's where most of the heat is coming from. The Empire knows it's there. They have it shielded and guarded by turbolasers and fighters. They wipe out the entire rebel force sent after them except for one person who succeeds using magic, and they would have had no idea that could even happen. They're not stupid or incompetent, but they didn't think the rebels would be dumb/crazy enough to attack using just fighter craft.
    Rogue One is an unnecessary complication. It's a good movie but that part never needed extra explanation.

    Rogue One was as good as Disney Star Wars movies ever got, and better than Attack Of The Clones. For one brief shining moment, it felt like Disney actually knew what they were doing (at that time, I could excuse the "familiarness" of The Force Awakens as being to put fans at ease who felt burned by the prequels). I have no objections to K2SO being the breakout character, and I also loved Chirrut and Admiral Raddis. I also had no issues with the CGI, it looks fine if you're not doing side-by-side comparisons. If anything took me out of the movie, it was the audio issues of James Earl Jones sounding older and Gold Leader obviously reusing stock voice clips from A New Hope.
    Rogue One served to expand on a classic rather than repurpose it to fit an agenda, which seems like a foreign concept to Disney nowadays. And the last Vader scene was PERFECT.

    I think you make a solid point about how Disney Star Wars uses aliens or rather doesnt use them (which is kind of ironic when Disney cares so much about diversity) I know it has been harpened to death already, but Chewbacca not getting the Falcon was just insane in my eyes. The sequels saw him as Han Solos dog and not a sentient being. The prequels atleast had Jar Jar and say what you will about him but i think the Gungans are pretty intresting in their own unique way.
    Yes humans are the dominant species but that the only prominent character (except an under utilized Chewie), was the other alien in solo that i dont even remember the name of, just that he was voice by Jon Favraue is just bad usage of lore and universe. Where are the hundred of species created during the past 50 years? I cant even think of a single Twi'lek or Rodian shown, which im pretty sure is the second and third most prominent races in the galaxy. Atleast Filoniverse seems to push abit for more alien diversity with live action Ithorians and Trandosians.

    I had a lot of fun with the movie though I was disappointed that the rebel capital ships weren't shooting more. Also I think having the plans hand carried to Tantive IV was a mistake because in A New Hope Vader clearly says they were transmitted to Leia not transmitted to another ship then carried to Leia's craft. They could have had the chase through the ship then a short battle to buy time for the transmission.

    Rogue One is definitely the best of the Disney-era Star Wars films, but to be fair the bar isn't very high considering all we have to compare are the Sequel trilogy films and Solo. And while it's far from a perfect film, Rogue One is at least entertaining (to me) and a film I can re-watch fully. Some people keep saying the Darth Vader scene is the only good part, but I strongly disagree.
    - The Battle of Scarif is the only Disney Star Wars battle that actually feels real and thought-out with clear goals, strategies, and opposing forces (TFA's Battle at Starkiller base is sadly a simplified version of Battle of Yavin, TLJ's Evacuation of D'Qar is frustratingly bad to me, and RoS's Battle of Exegol is just two airborne hordes smashing into each other).
    - The U-Wing transport, Zeta-class heavy cargo transport, MC75 Star Cruiser, and Deathtroopers are all phenomenal additions to Star Wars lore. My only real complaint here is their limited screen-time presence. The Shoretroopers look cool but imo are way too niche to be employed from a practical standpoint.
    - Alan Tudyk steals the screen as K2-SO in nearly every scene he's in.
    That being said, there are many elements that I would've definitely liked to see more thoroughly explored in the film: More of Jyn's harsh life growing up under Saw Garrera's tutelage as well as the Rebel extremists in general, the internal politics of the Alliance as multiple factions all step on each other in the name of "overthrowing the Empire" like the real rag-tag, bashed-together organization that they are, and the Imperial Meritocracy with Krennic and other significant figures running around trying to curry favor with the Emperor in hopes of achieving power, wealth, and status.

This is an important moment in “the battle of good vs evil”. It makes the other following movies mean more because we know the grit and sacrifice put into this fight from a larger perspective. I expected an awesome action scene before his death with the storm troopers being an appetizer and some big baddie (like a juggernaut or the death troopers) being more of a final challenge which they technically were but it wasn't done in the cool action scene type of way. More of a "storm troopers can't even hit a blind guy" type of way.

    The average Joe "nobodies" are my favorite characters in Star Wars, because they don't have plot armor. They feel more real, because they have real life-and-death stakes. That's why I love all those Rebel pilots from A New Hope, and that Rebel trooper with the gray hair defending the Tantive IV from boarding at the beginning of the movie. Rogue One is now my 2nd favorite Star Wars movie of all time, superseded only by A New Hope. It also doesn't hurt that Rogue One is basically a Star Wars version of Inglorious Basterds.

I feel like it does a poor job of setting up Saw Gerreras character. I recently watched this movie and the Star Wars rebels episode with Saw Gerrera. A 20 min episode of Star Wars rebels does a better job of setting up saw Gerreras character than Rogue one. In Rogue One they just mention he is dangerous and he might kill them, but they don’t really mention why, and what side he fights for. They don’t really explain why he is torturing the pilot either.

Han is a "scoundrel" et al. and has to go through a crisis of conscience. The only differences are that ANH was written for a younger audience, and Han's dirty laundry was (for the most part) left off screen (edit: although Han did shoot first! 😄)

    I for one have always enjoyed the universe of Star Wars more than the actual movies. I preffered the games because you got a sense of scope and world building and there being so much more to explore. Rogue One, and in some ways Solo, scratched that itch for me because it was detatched from the Skywalker storyline. There are so many great pieces to the Star Wars canon that I know of, and I am by far and away not an expert in the canon, that would make 40+ great movies compared to what they are putting out now. Even Mando irritates me because instead of an awesome "reclamation of the mandolorian people" story they instead put him on a perpetual "protect this caravan from raiders" mission with baby yoda. Why can't we just get some real stories about things not connected to the original story and enjoy those new characters? A whole universe and they can't stop linking back to the same family? Thousands of years of lore and they can't think of doing a single movie or series on when a jedi went hunting for sith relics only to turn and need to be hunted down? So many potential ideas and yet Disney seems to insist on making all the wrong things IMO.

    Rogue One is easily the best of Disney Star Wars. For a small snippet of the story, I think we see pretty good character development.
    Chirrut Imwe is one of my favorite characters. Being legally blind, I immediately connected with him and watching how he interacted with the Force, something much larger than himself, actually kind of inspired me and reminded me of some of the bonuses of not having normal sight. His lack of vision allows him to see things that others cannot and in many ways, I notice that within myself...not necessarily in the mystical sense but in being more aware of the less tangible aspects of life. Watching him walk through the firefight, confident in his purpose and unwavering in his path reminded me that sometimes, even when the challenges loom large, staying true to my purpose and path will see me through those difficulties.
    Sorry...I know that was a bit rambling but I just wanted to show how a character that some may overlook, can speak to someone on the deepest of levels.

Or you could go in between what’s been written, and then be free to do almost anything you want. and either case it would let them create similar kinds of stories. When I first saw Rogue One, I had a chip on my shoulder. It was answering a question that I felt no one had asked, mostly because there were three or four different versions of that answer in different video games and books. Not only that, I felt that it invalidated the first part of A New Hope. There was no doubt that they had the plans. This was a case of hot pursuit, not an overbearing Empire going after an innocent politician. In hindsight, I think it was the strongest of the Disney SW movies. It had the classic production troubles and reshoots that plagued the modern productions, but it turned out better than the rest in spite of that.

    • @originaldarkwater
      @originaldarkwater 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with you completely on how it invalidated the opening of ANH.
      When I saw it, I wasn't aware that the story of stealing the Death Star plans had been told multiple times already. What put a chip on my shoulder is the fact that Disney gave into the, in my view, incorrect opinion that the Empire would not have made the mistake of leaving the exhaust port on the Death Star vulnerable and felt the need to explain that by saying it had to be sabotage. This in spite of the fact that General Dodonna in ANH explicitly states that the Empire is so arrogant that they don't think a one-man fighter could ever be a threat to something as massive as the Death Star or they would have built better defenses.
      Furthermore, the Empire's arrogance being their downfall is a recurring theme in the OT, right down to the Emperor getting killed because he was so sure that Vader was completely loyal to him that Vader would never even consider saving his son, and the Empire thinking the Ewoks were too primitive to pose any kind of threat to them and the shield generator, which ultimately resulted in the destruction of the second Death Star. So needing to explain the original Death Star's vulnerability in any other way than Imperial arrogance just denies that theme in the OT.
      Rogue One might be the best of the Disney Star Wars movies, but unfortunately, that is not a very high bar... For me, it's okay, but not more than that.

  • @DarkLordArmanus
    @DarkLordArmanus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    By far the best movie of the Disney era, arguably the best Star Wars of the era. It does what so much of the Disney Star Wars projects fail to do: build on the lore and add to it without retconning or modifying anything, all while simultaneously showing a completely different kind of story yet still feeling completely Star Wars and fitting seamlessly into the Skywalker Saga...so much so that when I rewatch the saga I include this movie and ignore the sequel trilogy altogether.
    I agree that the characters don't feel very fleshed out, but the only two that truly matter is Jin and Andor, and these two characters are in fact very complex with clear motivations and complete character arcs that show change and growth. That complexity and growth makes their final scene so powerful....two cynical and jaded people who lost everything and lost themselves, having found a common cause also find redemption and know their sacrifice has meaning (unlike how they were being used by the alliance and partisans). They've given the galaxy hope, and their final moments are of comforting and absolving each other.
    Also brilliant to make the lead designer of the Death Star an objector who not only designed in the fatal flaw but made sure the alliance knew about it and pointed them to the plans...right under the Empire's nose.
    And then, that Vader scene....great film!

    I loved it. It was different and it was a nice change of pace to what we know with SW. My wife however not so much. Very opposite of me with this one.

    After watching The Force Awakens and seeing it "try" to be a copy and paste of elements of A New Hope (and failing pretty miserably), I was close to giving up on Disney Star Wars.
    Then I saw Rogue One.
    I really enjoyed many parts of Rogue One. Yes, it has issues as Thor went into, but this movie revitalized my interest in Star Wars.
    The only bad part about Rogue One was that it gave me a small glimmer of hope and renewed belief in Disney SW that The Last Jedi might just also be an "OK" movie...

    Great review. Easily the best of the Disney movies, indeed. Far from perfect, but in my book, it's even equal in quality to Revenge of Sith, the best one of the prequel movies.
    Your philosophy on fan service, I'm not sure I am onboard with absolutely. You're right that almost all of it in Rogue One was executed superbly, but the fan service in Solo (though almost none of that was good in the same way) was mostly not bad. (Barring a couple of glaring exceptions.) The unfortunate thing for Solo is that relatively fun parts of its fan service were the best thing about the whole movie.
    Rogue One managing to feel not like Star Wars and feel like Star Wars at the same time is a point well made. My second favorite Disney Star Wars movie was The Last Jedi. It's a distant second. I know some disagree, even so, but I like it more than all of the others. Regardless, I maintain that the worst thing about it is that it did not feel like Star Wars at all. Rogue One shows that if Johnson wanted to do something different, he could have had his cake and eaten it, too.
    Force Awakens and Rise of Skywalker both feel like Star Wars, but the latter is a bad movie and the former is a mediocre one, Star Wars movies or not.

    I think I can spot one more fan service reference although it’s even more subtle than the first. You can see a ship that’s the same type as the ghost from rebels in the space battle for a few shots, I always like to think this is hera still fighting the good fight for canan and ezra although I don’t think this was ever confirmed.

    A sequel to Rogue One would be cool, taking place between ESB and ROTJ showing how the Rebels found out about Death Star 2. Luke and the others were on Tatooine at the time so it won't be a problem to not include them. Kyle Katarn was ignored in RO so it would be nice to include him along with the Bothans and possible new characters. Moff Jerjerod as the main villain (using cgi) would make sense as he was in charge.

    Rogue One, in comparison to all before and all after it, was a Tradigy. That makes the difference. There is no hope for the ones we started to care, but in brings birth for A New Hope.
    personally Rogue One is my Episode 0, because the tides changed like a touch of faith.

  • @Flaris

    Yeah. And that’s mostly thanks to that short scene of Vader walking down a hallway killing guys. But it was also a pretty good movie in general. Absolutely better than basically the rest of Disney Star Wars in terms of film.

  • @___David__

    Leia looked awful, but Tarkin's recreation was AMAZING. I saw the film with two people who aren't Star Wars fans. I ask them to tell me which human character was a digital creation. They couldn't say. And when I showed my personal trainer the scene between Krennic and Tarkin, he thought Krennic was the digital creation.
    Can it be better in the future? Absolutely. But what they did with Tarkin in this film was amazing (also in part thanks to the commitment of Guy Henry to try to emulate Peter Cushing as best as he could).
    In fact, Tarkin in Rogue One is one of the things I like most about the film which, as far as I'm concerned, is the ONLY good Star Wars film out of the Disney Era.
    Will that mean I'll watch Andor? Absolutely not.

    • @originaldarkwater
      @originaldarkwater 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For me personally, both Tarkin and Leia were firmly in the uncanny valley, even though Tarkin was far better than Leia. I think recasting with actors that looked similar and enhancing that with hair and makeup would have been less distracting.
      I'm curious why you are apparently refusing to even check out Andor. I'm no fan of the Disney movies so far, and even Rogue One has some significant issues, but to me, Andor appears to be at least worth checking out.

    • @___David__
      @___David__ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@originaldarkwater I've checked out of Disney Star Wars. First for what they did to Gina Carano. Then they follow with BoBF which was an absolute snoozefest for a character that not only should have remained dead, but was then brought back to life for no good purpose and to be someone else.
      And finally, the thing that made me say "I'm done. I'm not watching anything else" was the complete sh*tshow that was Obi-Wan Kenobi.
      As for Andor, all I've heard from the actors and showrunners has been political propaganda and how they intended the show to "reflect the Trumpian world" and how Mon Mothma is "a Nanci Pelosi/AOC" character etc. Well, I'm a conservative to begin with. But, more importantly, I'm NOT American. I don't want my entertainment to be filled with political propaganda around American issues.
      And that seems to be the only thing Disney knows how to do these days.
      So, yeah. I'm out. Until Disney gets someone like David Zaslav who ruthlessly cleans house (including firing Kathleen Kennedy) and stirs the company back to doing entertainment instead of propaganda, I'm not wasting more of my limited time with their content.

    In some shots CGI Tarkin works really well, in some shots, not so much. My only gripe with the movie is that it reduces Leas role with the plans. She was given the plans, her ship ran away, then she was caught by Vader. I wish she'd had a bit bigger role on securing the plans.

      @originaldarkwater 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, it's kind of up in the air how much of Rogue One's success was Edwards and how much was the reshoots by Tony Gilroy. Although the fact that Gilroy ended up the showrunner on Andor and seems like he had a decent budget might provide a clue.
