I understand your desire, but I think your argument is flawed when defining a "traditional" fighter.
You see, what makes a fighter a traditional fighter is not the focus on competitive play, but the difference in gameplay mechanics, especially on the movement and health mechanics.
By your definition, rivals of aether would be classified as a traditional fighter since it has focus on competitive and serious play, even though it has much more in common with smash bros than with traditional fighters.
Smash is from a different genre, it's an "platafform fighter", and what defines it as an platafform fighter is not the focus on casual play but the movement and percentage mechanics and so on
i thought smash is a "platform fighter" where an "arena fighter" is more like something like pokken
@@perkypears yeah! You're right, I shall change it ;)
Thanks for poiting it out :D
Exactly.
Jesus Christ you get the point
I think he kind of heavily implied all of what you described here during the parts where he said, "a fighter like THIS, like THIS, like THIIIIS" for each of the different games, with the sidescrolling, health bars, timer, super meters, all the fluff and stuff that defines it as you said. He never outright said it, but I think it was implied to be significantly obvious.
I love traditional fighting games, but I think you're missing the point as well as why people enjoy the gameplay
He's making a what if, he knows smash players don't necessarily enjoy trad fighters.
They don’t enjoy it cause it’s restrictive and extremely foreign to them. Already tried this experiment with my friend and he just can’t grasp frame data or mixups and he ends up mashing in trad fighting games. However, he goes to smash tournaments and he dominates and also kicks my ass
@@infernate4067and does he also mash in tournaments? Or just when he gets grabbed.
Smash also uses frame data and mixups
@@legoblozz Sorry for the late reply but when I say mix ups I mean left-right and high-low. He doesn't understand how moves require you to block in a certain direction. And when I say mash I mean he's literally just pressing buttons at every given moment like hes trying to pressure with the typical sword character nair.
Bro, I get what you are trying to say. But, here I'm talking for myself, the fun and amazement for Smash is specially because it's different from other fighting games
Smash is based around movement, and that's what makes it so special and unique
Making smash a 2d fighter doesn’t make it more likely to get a story mode, the team will always be resistant to make a cut-scene-full story mode regardless if it’s a platform or traditional fighter
Shut up bitch. Let him show his ideas
His video was about how Smash being a 2D fighter would be cool... but the story mode had nothing to do with it being a 2D fighter
Green Skeleton shut up bitch, let me speak my mind
jair chavez idk it seemed like he was saying that by it being a traditional fighter it would open the gates for a full fledged story mode again
what about sub space
Not against the idea, although it'd be pretty stupid in my eyes.
The game idea can work and it's not stupid, but hella weird.
But you'd need to redesign every character to have equal proportions.
It'd only look strange because you've played the platformer first. If you played the 2.5D fighter first then you would think a platformer would be strange
Well the proportions of smaller characters is probably what needs to change, you’d also probably need to add some more special moves to characters using some imagination
@@thebapple1800 i mean lots of games have drastically smaller or larger characters, android 16 and gt goku in dbfz
Here's an even crazier idea. Anyone remembers Power Stones? What if Smash played like that, you know, in 3D? That's kinda been a dream of mine.
Wait what’s wrong with Pokken :c
WAIT WHO HATES THE MIIS

i liked pokken ;c
@oompa loompa They're alright, you have to learn their moves cause you can do some cheesy kills
.....
what’s wrong with pokken?
Glad I wasn't the only one thinking this.
I love pokken
Pokken is legitimately the best fighting game I’ve played mechanically. My experience isn’t exhaustive, but it’s got an incredible level of balance, polish, and thought behind its mechanics. DBFZ and BBTAG (My other main two) both have some core mechanical issues, Pokken doesn’t at all.
It's so fucking slow
Pokken is awesome
The problem with this is that so many characters would need to be completely re worked and changed to the extent that it wouldn’t be worth knowing that most likely it wouldn’t make nearly as much money as the regular smash bros would
Smash is the most widely played competitive fighting game in the world. It’s also the most complex. Sakurai is a genius. He somehow managed to integrate the most user friendly easy to pick up fighting game and the most competitive and intricate fighting game into one (unless your playing melee where it’s just sweaty tryhards) This is a great idea! Just calling the game “not competitive” isn’t true. By no means is this supposed to be condescending, nor am I angry. I am just saying that smash bros is VERY competitive
Good idea. But the reason why smash is so memorable is because of the game play
Just make a Fire Emblem fighter like either Soul Calibur or Dissidia.
If we got a Nintendo vs Capcom though...
Sean Bird I think maybe Nintendo vs Sega would be cool too
We did
we could use SNK’s button format, with 4 Buttons dedicated to Punches and Kicks. For example, Mario could use Fireball by pressing the 2 punches simultaneously, Cape with 2 punches while holding forward, FLUDD with 2 kicks while holding down and Mario Finale with all buttons pressed at once.
also a character would act as if they were screen ko’d if the attack that killed them was a launcher, or explode offscreen should they get killed by an attack with wall bouncing properties
So like, Mugen my guy.
May not be official but its a close second.
no.
Welp gg nvm boiz
So something similar to BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle, but with the roster of Mugen ^^
While I like the idea, it won't be as easy to pick up for beginners. But hey BBTAG is easy enough !
DBFZ is pretty easy it can have the universal controls similar to that game.
🤔 What JoJo heritage of the future?
Smash's success on being the premiere platform fighting game came about by it being different from traditonal fighting games at the time. To make Smash a traditonal healthbar, L-M-H combo-based fighter would take it away from the fighting game niche it, and Nintendo, has dominance over.
From my point of view, those kinds of traditonal fighting games do indeed have a larger skill gap and learning curve when it comes to competitive-based gameplay, and I admire the dedication these players have to learning combos and tech of these characters, I mean, I love watching DBFZ, Injustice gameplay after I learned more about the fine mechanics of pro-gamers breaking down an explaining their tech.
However, due to Smash Bros lower learning curve, it provides a fine balance of an easy to grasp party game (run around, hit your opponents off the stage, don't fall off the stage) and the now well-established competitive scene that has its own examples of tech based on percentages and knockback. This aspect of ease of access to gamers of various skill levels, in combination of the high profile characters and Smash's now 20+ years of fame, has created a massive audience that doesn't require a change of formula for the Smash series.
Now, I think a point you try to male is that Nintendo doesn't have a high-profile 1st party traditonal 2D fighter and that Pokken doesn't live up to its name to fill that void which I can understand. But considering how many traditonal fighters are made by 3rd party developers and Smash's global success in casual and comptetitive fanbase, Nintendo likely doesn't have that as a prioritiy.
To summarize, I can imagine Smash as a traditional fighter that has a higher quality story mode, team-battle-esk mechanic, with intro quotes and custom moves.
But to me, that would kill the identity of Smash itself. You're no longer standing out from the fighting game genre; you're blending in.
And doing that for the sake of diverging the competitive from the casual play when Smash already has very popular global competitive scene in the platform fighter sub-genre would be a HUGE mistake.
See, OHKO? THIS is why people have a problem with your video. Not because "they're stupid dumb meanie haters".
Smash being a casual style game makes is unique
If you hate miis you're a sinner and you aren't allowed in my mii church.

I'm pretty sure that the most amazing thing about SE is that a character doesn't need to talk to play a role, the lack of voice acting is artistic and intentional, i mean, some characters, like Kirby or D3 don't even talk, but they still played a major role in uniting the characters.
For anyone curious, Smash’s specific genre is Platform Fighter.
Hell yeah, I’ve always thought about this! The platformers I’ve always thought of for reference of a more traditional Smash fighting game are Skullgirls and BlazBlue since they have a lot of personality (plus, I’ve always played with the idea of if it was 2D animated like those games).
I’d really love if it was made a reality. And just imagining the cutscenes at the beginning of a match makes me really hyped despite the fact that it doesn’t even exist.

I feel like most people play smash because it's not a traditional fighting game. I normally don't like traditional fighters(although there are a few that I like) due to the restrictions that come with being a traditional fighter, so I'm very glad Smash is unique in that it's not a traditional fighting game.
are you CallMeCarson
@@joshuakorynta3385 No, I am in fact, not CallMeCarson
What do you mean "restrictions"? Smash has a very limited moveset compared to traditional fighting games
The one thing I love about smash brothers is it’s free-form combo system. It’s the selling point of the game to me. As long as that is kept intact, I can get behind health bars and super meters.
It would be so epic if every character had two final smashes
OMG YES
Or more than 2 final smashes
As a fighting game enthusiast that's a huge fan of smash, this is an idea I've considered from time to time... though I've always thought of how it would work as a more neutral-based game to contrast with the fast gameplay and mobility of the current smash.
This video really puts things in perspective, nice!
I really loved the vid despite the backlash its getting. I'd love to see nintendo characters in a traditional fighting game format too. I think its so different from regular smash tho so id prefer it as something seperate. I wonder if nintendo would ever make a traditional anything though considering that they make or break genres
With Stamina Mode, FS Meter, Custom Stages and Squad Strike combined, you can make something that resembles a more traditional fighting game. In fact, I've been playing Smash this way sometimes, and it's quite entertaining, changing your strategies from usual Smash to a more traditional 2D fighting game with Smash mechanics.
If that happened, I would love Super Smash Bros more than I've ever imagine other fighting games.
Bayo telling Lucas his mom died is child's play. If she really wanted to destroy his pride, he should be talking about how his game won't be ported to America.

I've loved this idea for so long now and a video is finally made for it. This might allow for even more stuff as well, give characters real alternates like Luigi as Mr L, Snake as his different appearances, Chrom as a Lord class and so much more stuff that could happen.
*Watches the whole video waiting for the talking to end and some kind of mod to show up*
*Gets heavily disappointed*
yep
While it sounds like a cool idea, the problem is that catering to a more competitive aspect turns the game into a more niche series even if the mechanics are good, it’ll mostly draw in one crowd type.
It’d struggle in the market cause the audience it’d be directed at, it’s why smash is more casual/competitive mix, so it draws in more players for a wide variety of play.
IMO if Smash went the Street Fighter route of gameplay instead of what it's used to, it loses what makes Smash stand out. Most fighting games don't give you free movement like Smash does. Smash allows you to freely jump around your opponents, run from any distance, even attack backwards, whereas a huge majority of fighting games lock the player into facing the opponent and have limits to how far or high the characters can jump in general.
Even on the stage front, in most fighting games, stages are nothing more than skins for the background with music, or in some cases, have slight changes to the size or are an infinite area that just goes on forever. With Smash, the stages, even with hazards off, allow for different strategies based on size and shape of the stage, platform position and height and other factors.
Besides, I think one of Smash's biggest draws IS it's easiness to learn. Some fighting games, like Tekken, expect you to know the entire inside and out of the game to even be competantly playable (A.K.A not wildly mashing buttons and hope you get something), whereas the beauty of Smash is that anybody at any age can pick it up and learn it quite quickly due to it's simple control scheme and defined options.
Yeah I don't understand the view point of this video. "What if the only unique fighting game was like all the other dozens of fighting games?" Like why?
Finally someone that uses their brain
@@SlayerJuan but fighting games are very different from each other

0:15 HOLY SHIT HE ACTUALLY SHOWED SOUL CALIBER 4!!! THANK YOU! That game is never talked about anymore
I like smash it has its uniqe style and just makes it more different then any other fighting game out there like if you feel me
I think this would be a neat addition to the already existing formula. Of course, one of the selling points of Smash is that it is different from the rest of the fighting games, but a “traditional” fighting mode (I guess we’ll call it “Arcade Mode”), I think, would be something that comes on top of the already existing game as not to deter long time fans of the series but also bring some new crowds into the mix. This can also vary tournament styles so we can still have competitive play on both ends of the spectrum. You can still have your ZeRo’s and ESAM’s, but you can also have your Infiltration’s and Fuudo’s. All and all, great idea.
I totally agree with u on the entire story mode thing. HONESTLY
I want a more interactive story mode regardless of what the gameplay is like. Let's be honest, World of Light had more characters but The Subspace Emissary had more character INTERACTION.
...and cutscenes.
Come on, Sakurai, where technology currently stands, people ARE GOING to upload the cutscenes online. It'll just happen. Don't let that stop you from making them!!!
