  • Changing the rear brakes on the 2022 VW Taos base model.
    We used the carista app/plug in first- put the Electronic parking brake into service mode. You have to do this (have heard of other plug system to use to do it too) in order to push brake piston back in when changing the brakes and to avoid any complications with the system.
    We are by no means professionals but did our research in order to avoid $800+ at the dealership. We played with different tools to use but found it easier to use what’s in the video! I’ll list links below.
    The pads have already been replaced in the video but we filmed and took it all apart to show you all how easy it can be!
    Flathead screwdriver
    T45 torch bit: Performance Tool W38845 Star Bit Socket, 3/8" Drive a.co/d/fpNo5v2
    Caliper tool/piston tool: Orion Motor Tech 24pcs Brake Caliper Tool, Heavy Duty Brake Caliper Compression Tool Caliper Piston Tool for Brake Pad Replacement Reset, with Thrust Bolt Assemblies Retaining Plates 18 Disc Adapters a.co/d/9YvcLjS
    Lubricant: AGS sil-glyde Brake lubricant
    Pads: O’reilly auto parts - ceramic runs around $44

    Just did this to mine a couple days ago. The carista app didn’t work for me. But it wasn’t hard to manually retract the electronic brake. A few extra streps that were pretty simple. Dealership and other places will try to scare you with the EPB. But if you have the tools and have done a brake change before you shouldn’t have a problem.

    Nice job! Offspring in the background a good choice too! Just did mine today on my 22 Taos FWD SE. Ours used a 7mm hex bit for those caliper pins, not a T45 Torx bit, strange :) Used the 12v from the battery to tap into the brake motor to fully retract it, worked well if you don't have the app. Simple job from start to finish, looks like yours was a snap too! FWIW our factory rear pads were almost shot at 16k miles, hopefully the new ceramics will last 3x that :)

      Should have been free. There is a service bulletin that covers replacement.

      I had mine replaced at 20K. VW refunded the cost of repair due to fact it should have lasted longer. Reach out to them!

      I haven’t done any other repairs. This was shared as the brakes wearing down early was an issue for many and they were charging us $800+ to do them at VW before they finally put a recall out on them.

    Looking closely, does anyone know if you even have to remove the brake caliper bracket to replace the rotors? I know this isn't needed on the VW Atlas for instance.

    Can you explain how you used the Carista app? Is this a plug-in device?

    • @ashleetrzyna1
      @ashleetrzyna1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, you get the device plug it in and get the app with it. then you can access diff settings for the car, in this case it would be putting the brakes into service mode which retracts the electronic parking brake.

    When I went to slide the caliper back onto the new pads, it barely wouldn't fit. I made sure the piston was compressed all the way, did you run into this issue at any point?

      get the carista device (or another obd device) plug it in, put brakes into service mode through the device & app. I talk about it in the description under the video.

    I have a 2022 taos as well AWD and they said my calipers are operated by a computer and they said the dealership needs to do them wants to charge me $1100.... I think they're full of sh*t

    • @ashleetrzyna1
      @ashleetrzyna1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that sounds like bs. Mine isn’t AWD but essentially using the OBD tool you’re putting the parking brake into service mode to release it, which is the only thing I’d assume is controlled by a computer. I don’t know much but maybe the video will help and avoid the $1100. We got the warranty extension just after replacing my brakes at home- no help VW. Lol

    what are the torque specs on the caliper pin bolts and carrier bolts?

    • @hoselrocket2001
      @hoselrocket2001 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I found an online manual and it appears the pins are spec'd to 26 ft/lbs and the carrier bolts are 67 ft/lbs + 90 degrees. In case anyone is curious. Apparently no one on TH-cam ever bothers to torque brake bolts or use blue LokTite.
