I'm twenty minutes from the Maryland line and twenty minutes from York . I fill up my vehicles when in Maryland which is usually every week . Yep auto insurance is much cheaper due to the fact that insurance companies know Maryland especially in the city and close to D.C. has the worst drivers . We moved from Anne Arundel County in Maryland in 2005 . The roads are generally better in Maryland than in Pennsylvania. Wait till there is a snow . The PA side will have a covering of snow or winter mix and as soon as you hit the Maryland line the roads are clear . This includes secondary roads also .
I love PA but I got a good laugh about your School taxes comment...$2k a year????🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. That is funny- good joke. I wish- i just paid $6,426.43 school taxes. This is my largest tax payment of the year. Altogether taxes and insurance is about $11k a year. Eventhough we paid off our $400k mortage, we never really stop paying.
Kind of late to this. Re: property taxes, the non-income based Homestead Exemption can give a sizable reduction to that, and the income-based property tax rebate can also help with that. Every little bit helps. Philly has a senior citizen tax freeze, for which most seniors qualify. My property taxes haven't gone up in 10 years, even with new assessments. And as others have mentioned, no tax on food or clothing.

Also.....if moving up from Maryland, leave your Maryland politics behind. York VS Baltimore????.........just watch The Wire and decide which locale is right for you. ( and Baltimore has rotted away even more since the last season of The Wire)

Has this guy been living under a laundry basket? I don’t know of a single state in which property taxes don’t go to schools, and you pay regardless of whether you have kids in school or not. Also, Pennsylvania is not the only state that requires periodic vehicle inspections. In fact, Maryland’s requirement that a used car has to pass an inspection before you can register it in the state is something I had never encountered in any of the 23 states I have lived in. Given this, I couldn’t watch any more of this video.
Buying a Pennsylvania car is a good buy as it has been kept up. Tennessee has ZERO inspection mandates. I shudder to think of the condition a TN used car.
I was born and raised in Pennsylvania relocated with my husband and my son from Berks County Exeter Township to York County Pennsylvania about 3 years ago I didn't realize how lucky we were with gas prices and and how much lower the gas prices were until we relocated to York because when we go and visit my husband's family who lives in Allentown Pennsylvania I'm like look at this fill up your gas tank before we go back to York and he looked at the gas price and looked at me and said oh you better believe I'm going to do that. Bottom line gas prices aside we're just not having a good experience in York so we're going to be relocating either to the Lehigh Valley County close to his parents in Allentown Pennsylvania or back to Berks County Pennsylvania.
Those things you mention are all a part of New York State too. School taxes, with or without kids, inspections every year, cost of living. Sounds like Maryland is the place to live. I got my disappointments in South Carolina. A LOT of different ways down there. My sister and family live in Sharon PA
Hey Pete! I don't know what part of York you're in, but when you talk low crime and no traffic, that's not the York I know. I've lived in the Harrisburg area for 35 years, and York is no different. High crime and insane traffic that's only gotten worse over the years. I have a friend that goes to York once a week to buy drugs. Not a nice place to live, and I would never live there. Just sayin'.
Thanks for your comment, coming from Baltimore every place is low traffic and crime 😂 but I appreciate your insight, each place has its own unique issues

Your two videos on York were helpful and encouraging. Thank you.
Property taxes vary from township to township. Cost of living also. You're inYork. Not in Philadelphia or the Main Line or other high rent areas. Pocono mountains, places not philly, Pittsburgh are much more reasonable. Lived all ive pa my whole life. Big generalizations on this vid.
Virginia has a safety inspection once a year emissions every two years and the biggest one is a property tax for your window however you never received a sticker they ended that but they continue to send you a bill every year if you don't pay it they will boot your car yeah there's no property tax on the windshield anymore but undoubtedly it's very high for these cars based on the amount of money you paid for your car for its current value used to be an extra $35 a year maybe 20 years ago they said they were doing away with the property tax sticker they got to get rid of the sticker and kept the property tax Pennsylvania learned that from Virginia
I'm from PA and drove through Virginia twice. It looks beautiful. However every other car was a trooper and it seemed every 5 miles they had someone pulled over.
School tax is higher, gas is higher, milk is higher, pot hole tax on fuel, but you can now get an alcoholic slushy now at Rutgers, md dmv tags just went up, pa doesn’t tax your ss or retirement
Berks county, Pa. School tax greater than $1000 per MONTH, township tax, fire department tax, emergency response (ambulance) tax, 911 communication tax, per capita tax (for being a resident), earned income tax to local municipality, state income tax, county tax
No traffic ha-come to North Central PA - your hair will fall out! Moved to PA 21 years ago from Long Island, NY-everything is so much cheaper! I’d never go back to NY even though my heart is still there. Most homes where I live are reasonably priced as well. They are extending our bypass which will take most of the trucks and out of towners off our roads; however this is Mennonite & Amish Country so if you are looking for big restaurants forget it but other than that it’s a beautiful place to live-Selinsgrove PA!
Even though PA requires annual safety and emission inspections, most all local service shops can perform them, unlike MD where you have to go to specified emissions stations. So that is not as bad as it first appears. But yes, indeed, the school taxes are absurd as is the high gas tax. PA has a very inefficient school administration structure and we pay the price. The local county tax is in addition to PA tax, just like MD but, in my experience, it is still overall less expensive than MD. Not taxing retirement income is a huge tax benefit. If you are coming from a state that allowed a tax deductions for retirement contributions, you will not pay taxes in PA when you withdraw upon retirement. This “double dipping” tax benefit is very rare. But, as you said, the beauty, lower crime, produce stands at practically every corner, Amish farms, all make it a vey desirable and pleasant living experience.
My mother and I lived in the outskirts of York, PA for several years in the 1980s, and for a year up near Wilkes-Barre, PA, near relatives. I lived near Blakeslee and then Stroudsburg for a couple of years in the early 2000s. I liked everywhere except Stroudsburg, but that's because I'm not a city person. My mother was actually from PA, across Wyoming Valley from Wilkes-Barre. And yes, there is a Wyoming Valley in PA. It's wide, very long, and lovely. The cemetery where my mother is buried is up on a ridge across the valley from Wilkes-Barre, and the view is absolutely lovely. Mom is among many relatives there, as she was born in one of the small towns just down the hill.😊
$2,000 school tax? More like $5,000. State inspections are a good idea. Gives me peace of mind that the idiots driving next to me at least have a semi-safe car. Who the heck pays $500 a month car insurance?
@@anotherm2722I was paying that I live in Miami,fl just imagine what people are paying a year with higher car insurance on hellcats, m4s , and tesla trucks down here lol. I plan on moving up north . Out of the state.
It’s all relative. I mover from NJ to eastern PA and taxes are much lower than in NJ. No change on the vehicle inspections but in NJ they can be done a one of the free inspection stations-doesn’t make up for the high taxes. One thing to note for retirees. Only “earned” income is taxed by the state and municipalities. “Unearned” income, that is income from dividends, capital gains, pensions etc, are NOT taxed by the state.
That's just flat wrong. Maybe you didn't type what you meant to. But the PA State income tax (PIT) absolutely does tax unearned income such as interest, dividends, and capital gains. As the video mentions, the state does not tax deferred retirement accounts because PA taxes that original income before it gets into the account (so the state treats traditional IRA & 401k kind of like a Roth). Also, the PA State income tax exempts interest on Federal debt instruments, and PA tax free bonds. It is usually only the local municipal earned income tax (EIT) that does not tax unearned income.
Maryland is a joke also. Both states are Democrats run. I lived in PA all my life and now I'm in NC. Taxes, gas, very expensive, but, cheaper than NY, NJ
Yes, there are too many taxes, here AND other states. Nowhere is perfect. But, York PA has been my home for over 35 years. Paid well, good people, supported my business and my family goals. And you came from Baltimore? Smart. That toilet is about to flush. Keep a positive view, and quit complaining or MOVE.
I'm living in Westminster, MD. I had considered moving to PA (Gettysburg, Hanover, York area) for retirement since housing in PA is less expensive to purchase, and PA doesn't tax retirement income. But I've done the research.. At best I'd break even, and possibly cost me more to move to PA. Bottom line I'm staying in Westminster.

Don't forget about Harrisburg and Lancaster. The western suburbs of Philadelphia are awesome too. Northern Delaware, especially the Brandywinee Valley is nice also.
Property Tax, School Tax, Sales Tax, Income Tax, highest gas tax. Annual vehicle inspection makes sense. Keeps the rolling total loss vehicles with no brakes and bald tires OFF the road.
Yes that is the only major downside of owning a home in Pennsylvania. Being saddled with both School Property taxes and local municipality real estate taxes. The municipal real estate taxes can be a little or a lot depending on if your own or city has paid police and or a paid fire department and emergency services. Just like school boards who believe taxpayers have bottomless pockets so do local governments and both take the least likely little whim and blow money on it. And of course if you can't pay your taxes they just take your home from you, sell it to someone who can afford the taxes and your done.

You said it like I heard. Bmore ppl moving to York. Now we wait and see I guess, huh?
I'm from Pittsburgh but now live in Ohio, 9 miles from the PA border. We have low property tax, no car inspections, no emissions, and much lower gas prices than PA. I do pay a city tax and a school district tax but very few places have a school district tax. I'm an hour from Pittsburgh but much, much less expensive to live here.
Thank you for that info
PA native here- I often think about that Ohio move- close to the PA border.
Ohio has the best highways around. I drove to Toledo a lot and you can always tell as soon as you hit the Ohio border. Clean and zero potholes.
Also.....if moving up from Maryland, leave your Maryland politics behind. York VS Baltimore????.........just watch The Wire and decide which locale is right for you. ( and Baltimore has rotted away even more since the last season of The Wire)
Yea Tv is reality
York is Baltimore's little brother.
@@LivingInPennsylvaniaPA The Wire was based on real accounts written by detectives and police serving Baltimore, as well as journalists from The Sun ( Baltimores newspaper) The c Wire was not fiction.
Property taxes are awful. Even higher more East towards Philly. Good video. Native Pennsylvania.
My parents lived in New Jersey. THEY had high property tax. Mine in Pennsylvania are cheap by comparison.

Dude, get out of the street.
Apparently, you have not moved from New York or New Jersey
Maryland
@@LivingInPennsylvaniaPA the taxes in nj were just crazy so we moved to Easton and retired
You forgot about having to put with awful MAGAS who could be living next door.
I live in Denver, CO. I'm 65 and I'll be selling my home and moving back east next year. 30 years of allergies in Colorado. I want to be back in the pollen I was born in. (Originally from Horsham PA) I just stumbled on to York recently and have been thinking carefully and learning more about it. Seems like it checks a good number of boxes. Your two videos on York were helpful and encouraging. Thank you.
Thank you for your comment, we’ll be adding more York content shortly!
Horsham!
The pollen is much worse here than 30 years ago.
York sucks. The county is ok. The city is dangerous. Nobody likes york that has lived anywhere else.
PA has among the countries most punitive STATE DEATH TAXES
I think it's cheaper in PA vs the Baltimore MSA..Minimum 7.5%+ income tax rate in any central MD county vs ~ 3.15 - 4.15% for PA.
No mention of how Maryland funds schools?
Property tax. In B'mo, the more they spend on the school system, the worse it gets.
Berks county, Pa. School tax greater than $1000 per MONTH, township tax, fire department tax, emergency response (ambulance) tax, 911 communication tax, per capita tax (for being a resident), earned income tax to local municipality, state income tax, county tax
😱
$1000 per month?? How much property do you have?

Pennsylvania . . . Land Of Taxes!!!
Sounds great will visit!
Great comment thank you
My mother and I lived in the outskirts of York, PA for several years in the 1980s, and for a year up near Wilkes-Barre, PA, near relatives.
I was thinking that too about the car insurance, $6k a year, c'mon.
Great thanks for that info!
My electric bill came in to 600 dollars. God help me in PA.
Right there with you!
@LivingInPennsylvaniaPA Thank you for making me feel less crazy about the electric bill. Love PA and it's all worth it, coming from Miami it's like dying and going to heaven... and heaven has bills baby!
600$ electric bill??? In PA?? Who is your provider? .... and do you have electric for heating?
We had a 4-bedroom home in PA for almost 30 years until 2019 & our electric bill never came close to that. Maybe consider an energy audit.
Nice video but I was hoping to hear more about York specifically.
Thank you, I’m working on a new video for York, what kinds of things should I focus on?
Give Sellisgrove a try my friend, Snyder county
Car insurance is not cheaper because of state inspections but the region of PA.
Move to Chester, Bucks, Montgomery, Delaware, or Philadelphia county and you'll pay similar to Baltimore.
Pa is pretty.
You just talked me out of moving to Pennsylvania
Ha! Where are you coming from?
Hello Peter, I just found your channel by chance and I'm very happy about it. I live in NYC and I'm hopping to move to Pennsylvania in the near future. I've been looking at Scranton, Lancaster and York. I'll keep doing a little bit of research about these cities and decide which would be better for me latter on. It seems that like York and Lancaster are growing a lot while Scranton, not so much.
Thank you, for this video and the information. Have a great weekend!
Thank you for your comment, we hope our channel can be of value to you
I like Scranton, but be aware the winters are harsh up there.
Don't forget about Harrisburg and Lancaster. The western suburbs of Philadelphia are awesome too. Northern Delaware, especially the Brandywinee Valley is nice also.
@@richardcarroll2500, thank you for your suggestions.
There is no comparison between York and Lancaster. Lancaster is far nicer. I worked in York for 30 years but now live in Lancaster.
If you didn't know, property taxes were a problem in Pennsylvania, that's your fault.
Great video. Thinking about to Harrisburg from South Florida !

Been up here in Pa. for 25 years. Like it a lot. Two things stand out up here. Native Pennsylvanians have a hard time staying on their side of the yellow line on roads. It's normal for them to come on over in your lane. Get use to swerving to get out of the way. At night, there is always an oncoming vehicle with one headlight set on high beam......and they don't fix it!

Well it is generally very scenic with all the countryside and historical buildings. If you are South Central or Eastern you are within reasonable driving distance between New York, beaches, DC. If you are into gambling PA recently has many close Casinos to visit.
Pretty good local food. Good museums/theaters.

Socially liberal in my experience
Like every state, I would suggest looking at the 2020 Presidential election color by county as a start. With that said, there is a place where everyone will be comfortable..
@@PanamaZarelto True PA has very different political leanings depending on which county...There is a reason it is always a key swing state in federal elections.

@@LivingInPennsylvaniaPA haven’t made up my mind yet. I’ll see how things are in a few years and decide then. ☺️
Many states have an annual inspection requirement for your vehicle. Consider this: some states - like Virginia and Connecticut - actually have an annual property tax on your vehicle! PA, like most states, you only pay tax on your car when you buy it.
Annual property tax, ouch!

Emissions testing... most of the 67 countries don't require it.
Safety inspection... it is a small expense.. I'd prefer they keep it as too many people know nothing about maintenance and just let things go
Property taxes....still way less than NY... and I lived there too ....and I'm talking about western and Central NY..not NYC.....insane taxes in the same type of houses in PA. Think double and keep going...
Income tax....well it's a flat 3.07 .... yep way less the NY progressive scale.
