The Alan Parsons was really a studio band of not just Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson. A studio genius and a musical genius. But they also assembled some of the very best musicians for each album. The Project never really toured during the years they put out albums 1976 to 1987. When Eric Woolfson left the partnership in in the late 80’s. Alan started a solo career in which he and his band plays all the APP classics including La Sagrada Familia. Alan still puts out new music and tours today.

I've been a long time fan of The Alan Parsons Project (since the 70's). The intricacies of the melodies and arrangements from his albums which paved the way to, and influenced, other artists such as Trans Siberian Orchestra, Nightwish to name a few. I think you also made a reference to Paco De Lucia at the beginning of the video about the Flamenco guitarist, Friday Night in San Francisco is another gem which is musically magical

John Miles' hit Music was produced by Alan Parsons. John Miles would also perform the song several times at the yearly Night of the Proms concerts, where a symphony orchestra plays both classical music as well as suitable hits with the original pop artists. John Miles was one of the favorites, and I also remember from the nineties Sting singing Summertime (from Porgy and Bess) with the orchestra and Barry Ryan singing Eloise.

What a great choice for your first listen to the great APP. This album is based around the great church by Gaudi in Barcelona. I've loved this song since I first heard it in 1987 and finally got to the church last year. I sat inside in all that grandeur, the Spanish sunlight filtering down through the intricate stained-glass windows, and I slipped on my headphones, and I listened to this song. A dream of over 30 years fulfilled.
I don't know if I can self promote but there may be some photos and videos on a channel not far away.
And things have changed a bit since the opening lines were spoken - they think they might actually finish the construction in the next couple of years.
The whole Gaudi album is extraordinary but you might like to listen to 'Standing On Higher Ground', a faster, rockier song.
Most reactors who do APP generally go for their older stuff, and I don't often hear this later album on reaction channels.
    But as for older stuff:
    Games People Play
    Time
Nothing Left To Lose (which is actually part of a 5-piece song, The Turn of a Friendly Card - but it's 16 minutes long)
    Silence and I
    Old and Wise
    Don't Answer Me
Let's Talk About Me (This is my favourite, it has personal meaning to me)
    Days Are Numbers
    The Same Old Sun
It's one of those fabled rabbit holes. Thanks so much for your appreciation of this song.

I have traveled extensively throughout Europe over the past sixty years, and La Sagrada Familia is one of my favorite sites in one of my favorite cities. The magnificence of this basilica is difficult to express in words, but I can assure you that as you wander through and around this structure you will be astonished by its grandeur and it’s beauty. Intrigued by its amazing history. The last time I visited, about ten years ago, I could only hope it would be finished during my lifetime, and that I would be healthy enough to enjoy it once again. I will be eighty years old later this year, and it is expected to be completed in 2026. I anticipate I will be in Barcelona once again, with tears rolling down my cheeks, and with a calming feeling that I better understand what a privilege it is to be alive.😮

    "Fragile"
    "Return To Tunguska"
    "To One In Paradise"
    "Standing On Higher Ground"
    "Pyramania"

Mellow in the sense that they aren’t heavy rock but lots of orchestration in a sense. A whole album inspired by Edgar Allen Poe. “The Raven” and “The Cask If Amontillado”. Are a couple of stand outs from it. Stuff from “ I Robot” is kind of relevant today with the rise of AI.

Well ya picked a heck of a song to jump on the APP bandwagon. Welcome aboard! There's plenty of Beaujolais for everyone ❤
A few things, you mention the instrumentation and use of orchestra as well as it feels like a musical.
Andrew Powell is a regular on pretty much all of the APP albums - and even a few of Alan Parsons' solo albums. He's the man responsible for assisting in writing and conducting the orchestras that play on the albums.
Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson - our two primary members - would eventually part ways after this album. Parsons would stick with solo albums and sound engineering, however Woolfson would go on to do musicals. One of those musicals? Gaudi the musical.
APP's albums are all thematic. In this case, the Album is all about the Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi.
They never performed live, because according to Alan Parsons, it wasn't feasible. They did eventually put out an Alan Parsons Live album in the 90s but by then Woolfson had left. Since then Alan Parsons tours as much as he can, performing APP classics. He also puts out Solo albums, his most recent being 'From a New World'.
Eric Woolfson regrettably passed away in 2009. Aside from his legacy with APP, he is remembered for his musicals ranging from topics like gambling, Sigmund Freud and Edgar Allan Poe.
There's a bunch of songs to recommend and some of them need to be played together, like Sirius and Eye in the Sky. I also recommend listening to Voyager, What Goes Up and The Eagle Will Rise Again all in one go - a very wise person on TH-cam has made this possible, just type in all three songs and it should appear top of the list. As for the rest... Take your time. Have fun. And thanks for sharing.

I first discovered The Alan Parsons Project back in the summer of '78. I was 15 and spending a couple weeks in Fort Collins, Colorado with my relatives. Today, I continue listening to their music time to time...nostalgic!

For my taste, one of the most underrated conceptual themed albums.

The song title may be The holy family however the song is most certainly about the building of the same name. Maybe the greatest building on the planet and worth a visit by anyone of any faith. It is simply stupendous internally and almost unbelievable when you consider that it was conceived in the 19th century with only written mathematics and geometry and physical models to work with. A miracle of design and Gaudi is quite rightly slowly moving through the beatification process (to be declared a Saint). The song captures some of the drama of the building.

La Sagrada Familia is in Barcelona and was designed to take a 100 years to build. I have been in any about 20 years ago and it is wonderful but was not finished. He designed a lot of buildings in Barcelona and they are all very interesting. The Album is base around his life and works of the architech Antonio Gaudí. Alan & Eric created many "concept album". They are considered a progessive rock band (Prog rock).

this song inspired me to know more about Gaudi and Sagrada Familia. have been to barcelona several times since. Alan Parsons has a long and storied history, he has worked with the Beatles at Abbey Road studios and was an engineer on Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon , his high concept albums have always (ok, mostly) delighted and informed me for the past 40+ years. If i had to choose one artist for life on a desert island, it would probably be Alan Parsons

Funnily enough, I thought in my head that you had already done the combination of Sirius and Eye in the Sky, which will probably be highly recommended, and the two together are often the first two tracks reacted to by people (with Sirius often being highly recognizable, though I won't spoil it). I specifically chose this track partially because it is much less frequently recommended, as Gaudi was quite possibly their least popular album (aside from the almost completely unknown Freudiana, which is officially a side project of Eric Woolfson in a more musical vein, but was produced by Alan Parsons).
Alan Parsons went to to produce a few more albums under his own name, without Eric Woolfson, and there are some good tracks there, as well.
The vocals in this song were from the amazing John Miles, who contributed to several other APP tracks spanning from their first to last albums including "(The System of) Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether", "Shadow of a Lonely Man", "Stereotomy", and "There But for the Grace of God" (from Freudiana).
My own personal collection of favorites, aside from this one and the previously listed tracks featuring John Miles, include "Old and Wise", "Ammonia Avenue", "Silence and I", "Time", and "The Turn of a Friendly Card", but every album is full of gems.

We have a dvd of. Their current touring group, a concert in the Netherlands! We watch it all the time, weekly actually, I think I drive my husband crazy, although he does enjoy it. Everyone on the current tour is very talented. I would really love to see them before Alan gets too old to tour anymore, h seems to be doing good at this time.
As far as his engineering talent, all I have to say is ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ by Pink Floyd!! ❤❤.
There are other great songs from the APP mentioned in the comments to consider. Thanks guys!!❤❤

A huge rabbit hole to go down with the Alan Parsons Project. Along with Eric Woolfson they created great albums from the mid 70s through late 80s. Many were concept albums. For example their first album was based on stories by Edgar Alan Poe.
They had several more commercial sounding hit singles but also had a lot of albums tracks similar to this one which I think is their more interesting work.
Parsons engineered some classic albums like the Beatles Abby Road and Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon.

A lot of people concentrate on the title & Antonio Gaudi , But if you listen to lyrics and think about Spanish History ( civil war , Franco dictatorship) not to mention it’s long history . The lyrics talk about the hope & perseverance of the people over generations.
