I did not know about the danger of jumping a mower with my vehicle engine running. I guess I've been lucky for all these years, but I will take your advice before my luck runs out.
I knew a guy I should've bought his joystick rider from him. His battery was dead and he broke the stator by jumping with a running vehicle. Then he'd be draining batteries since they wouldn't charge.
It's because they transistorize everything now. So you pull too much current through a transistor and all of a sudden the magic white smoke escapes. That and these days everything comes out of ping pang land. So the actual quality of the electrical components really isn't that great. Yes even the quote unquote OE parts are made in ting tong land and imported over here. You really should try charging the battery on a trickle charger for a day or two and see what happens. Because even those Lithium battery based jump starters can actually fry stuff too. Expeacially if it's already low on charge and forget and hook it up anyway you'll end up frying diodes or something like the voltage regular due to the low voltage high current spike that happens as a result of the battery in your Jumpstarter or jumppack whatever you want to call it being low. You want to try to keep those jump packs on charge all the time. Because even if you charge it all the way up but then it sits for 6 months or more before you use it the next time chances are it's not going to crank over whatever your trying to start with it. They do loose charge slowly over time from just sitting not doing anything. So again even a jump pack isn't totally safe. Anything silicon based is very particular about the voltage and current levels that it sees and if you're too far outside of the specific range it's supposed to stay within. Your going to fry something. It's not like the old school ignition modules etc. This new stuff is much more particular about what it sees.
@@JoshSmith-wo7zw many things you stated are plain wrong. I am not gonna explain why because my time is limited but I will mention only one: never ever keep a jump starter on charger the whole time as their internal batteries do not like that and they will prematurely fail.

I got the NOCO one and yes, these things are great. makes my Diehard battery pack useless. However, 1 of my 4 NOCO jump starters died less than a year and was never used, so yeah, that sucked. I may try one of these Gooloo ones, but I am scared of the chinese ones being left in a hot car. Not to say the NOCO is not made in China, but the no name Chinese ones scare me. I bought one of these from your previous recommendation. It was a late night purchase, probably after a couple beers and I felt silly the next day and figured I bought some junk promotional garbage. Great tip. Retired GM tech, I carry one around to help others and just start their vehicles. On newer vehicles it is just not safe to jump start car to car anymore. My old pickup sometimes sits too long without trickle charger on it, starts right up...
I have a GOOLOO 1200A I bought last October. I've used it several times on my 5.4 gas and my z-turn. I think I probably could've jumped 40 times on one charge. Cheaper and much more handy than the old plug in the wall jump boxes.
Great advice. For many years when jump starting a lawnmower from my vehicle, I’ve never started the vehicle. My dad was a old Chevrolet mechanic and told me that many many years ago.
I got relatively lucky. About 15 years ago on my first Riding Mower (Bolens) I jumped it with the Jeep engine running. Didn't kill the alternator, didn't kill the mower, but it did draw enough amperage to catch the fuse box in the Jeep on fire and burned out the ALT fuse section of the Fuse Box. I had to rig a solo 50A fuse mount and fuse separately from the wires that originally went to the fuse block that is now burned out. Basically what happened was that the 50A fuse never blew, but the 20A on the Bolens mower did blow. Live and learn...
What everybody needs to keep in mind with these lithium boost/ jumper packs is lithium does not like extreme heat but is fairly tolerant of heat so you can probably get away with keeping it in your car in the summer. But if it's too cold out say 20° f outside and your boost pack has been sitting in your car overnight. It will be dead too and will not be willing to discharge so it will not actually jump. Start your vehicle and you can't just take the boost pack inside and hook it up. Two. Charge it up because it is extremely damaging to charge a lithium cell when the lithium cell is below. Freezing so you need to take it in your house. And let it sit around and warm up for an hour or so in a nice, warm house before you try using it again. You don't need to charge it most likely if you left it charge, you just need to warm it up. So the cells are actually capable of discharging. That is why you should bring it inside every night and then remember to grab it during the day before you leave the house to carry it with you in your car so that way it can be warm and when you do need it in the winter it will work if you've ever noticed people saying that the lithium boost packs are crap, you'll notice that it's all people who are from areas where it gets cold like where I live in Colorado and everyone is saying that they are trash in the winter because they leave them in the car and hint hint a lithium battery at 32° Fahrenheit is the equivalent of leaving your lead acid battery in negative 40°. It's almost impossible to get your car to start when it's negative. 40 out but the boost pack if it is below freezing really doesn't have much ability to discharge compared to if the boost pack was actually at a temperature of 50°.
Thanks for mentioning having a fuse on the mower. We have a Craftsman gt5000 and couldn’t get it to turn over even with a new battery. After watching this video, I found the fuse, changed it out and it fired right up !!! Thanks again for what you do ! ❤
Interesting cautionary note about jump starting little engines from a running vehicle. Given both have lead acid batteries I'm surprised the voltage of a running car is a problem. My first thought was the car is able to dump a lot of current into the little battery potentially damaging it but I'm surprised about the damage to other components. The high current will happen regardless of whether or not the engine is running but the higher voltage of a running car will increase the current into the little battery making damage more likely.
I was thinking the same thing. I suppose if you start the car while hooked up you could see voltage spikes in the electronics of the mower that aren't protected by the car's high voltage protection circuits.
It won’t cause damage your going from battery to battery those lawn mower batteries are 12v just like car just less capacity there’s absolutely no reason it could ever hurt anything on the mower.
@@Thumper68 I disagree. Batteries have a maximum charge current limitation. Assuming the small battery is heavily discharged it will see extremely high charging current when jumpered to a car. If the car engine is running the voltage will be higher causing even more current to flow.
I think what the problem is, the alternator on a car will put out more amps, and voltage when you hit the starter on the mower, causing a spike in the cars charging system, that spike is what hurts the mowers electrical system.
Good advice, and I trust/like, and Respect this person . My only Caution is that you will be tempted By many lower cost options. Maybe You should, maybe not. An older, 7.3 diesel will take about the high End of electrical demand. Hard to Trust online specs. I have bought 3 (not gooloo). 1st one was good For my v6 escape, but not enough For my 5.7 hemi. Upgrade to one That worked and bought another For someone close. One of the Latter did somehow short out. Sorry for rambling, you can go Alot cheaper, but in the long run, Maybe this one is a good choice. Note to cold climate buyers, if It is 20 below f ,and it is in your Car "fully charged". ..ain't gonna Work.
I bought the NOCO power boost last year a week before a camping trip. It essentially does the same thing as the GOOLOO…hook up to the battery and you have sixty seconds to start the vehicle before the unit times out. I needed to use it that weekend because a friend’s car died, and used it another time at work when a coworker left his lights on. Either product I guarantee is worth the money! I always keep it in my vehicle
Great video, something else to keep in mind is do not mow with an electric clutch and a discharged battery. Running any electrical loads while the charging system is also charging a depleted battery can burn out the alternator. Some of damage seen from jumpstarting maybe caused by the charging system being overtaxed after startup.
You ought to learn how charging systems work as your claim is wrong. The whole idea of a charging system is precisely designed to do what you say you shouldn't. The alt is never off if you had tested a rideon stator you'd know this. The reg is there for a reason. As for over taxing i refer you to the regulator
thank you for something I never knew. I have never tried to jump start a mower from a car but NOW I KNOW not to start the car engine.l Thanks for this.
There’s nothing wrong with jumping from a running vehicle unless it’s not a 12v vehicle. A running car’s 13.5-14.5v is exactly the same as a running mower’s 13.5-14.5v at the battery. Also, for fun, use a multimeter to test voltage coming out of the jump pack. I’m willing to bet it’s 15 or above which may damage something.
I just tested a GOOLOO GT 4000 that is charged to 95% on its boost setting. I get 16.28VDC but with only the DVM as a load. But this is a minuscule load and not representative of what the booster would see in a dead battery, jump start situation. So I hooked the GT4000 up to my OTC 3182 130amp battery load tester. I engaged the boost function on the GT4000 and activated the battery load tester. The voltage was a fairly steady 13.5VDC. This result is almost exactly the voltage that you would expect to deliver through a set of jumper cables from a car with a fully charged battery and the engine running. So I don’t buy the assertion that jumping a lawn tractor with a dead 12V battery from a car with the engine running is any different electrically than jumping it with the GT4000 boost pack. Nor am I convinced by anything I saw in the video or read in the comments that jumping the lawn tractor from a car or boost pack is the ROOT CAUSE of the anecdotal reports of subsequent electrical problems in the tractor. Too often correlation is confused with causation. I suspect that is the case here. Until I see some evidence that an engineer like myself can understand I will continue to jump start 12V equipment from my 12V car or truck with the engine running.
Definitely getting this booster. I always stay to the end of the video for the payoff of the successful repair but this payoff was very well worth the wait. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thanks much! I think I knew that but definitely will keep in the back of my mind to keep from burnin it down! Great tip on the Gooloos! Enjoy your videos!!
I used my Jumpsmart flashlight starter in my rider mower. I seemed to work fine. I actually I jumped it 3 times over the course of a day until it didn't have enough juice left to turn it over anymore. I trickle charged the battery later and it seems okay now. (so far)
These lithium jump starters are awesome, my ups mechanic has the nocoboost gbx155 to jump semi trucks and package cars, dumb loaders use dome lights to see when loading package cars in the morning during winter at 10 degrees out, instantly starts as she did
Lol, I didn't see the Gooloo part in the title. I just saw the GT3000 and GT4000 and thought we were going to talk about some good old Craftsman garden tractors! It was still an informative video though and now I know which jump starter I'll be getting next time I'm looking to buy one!Ii
I'm glad you had better results. I had a GOOLOO SuperSafe Car Jump Starter, 800A Peak 18000mAh. We had a power outage so I used it to charge/power phones. When the power came back on I tried to charge the GooLoo but it bricked on me. Fortunately I was able to get a refund.
Another excellent video. Very helpful. I ordered that booster. Thanks for the help. The pool scene was an excellent personal touch. Everything is beautiful!!
I never knew jumping a lawn tractor from a running car would do so much damage..I have a jump starter that I have used for everything and they work really well.
I have given these GooLoos as gifts to family members 3 times. Everyone thinks they are fantastic. My riding mower and Electric start snowblower are stored in a shed with no power and difficult to get to to jump start from a a vehicle. I am ordering one for myself and one for my grandson who just went "on his own"
It’s so good to hear that my fellow Americans are buying any thing from a commie country that has vowed to take us down, make sure you salute coco every time you use it
You're such a good person. I wish I were young again, I would grab my wrenches, head down there, and plead for a job. Keep the video co.ing, and thanks
I have 2 of them, 1 for each car. Much better than jump starting from another car; even works on mower batteries. Can even run a mobile with low battery.
Got one when they first came out. ( different brand) , like10 yrs ago, lasted quite a few yrs. Got another one from amazon a few yrs ago, cranks my diesel equipment amazingly.
Great product. I picked one up after seeing my friend get his bus, (six batteries) from Colorado to West Virginia with a bad alternator. Kept charging it with his wife's van and then using it to keep the bus going. I don't impress easily, and I had to have one. I use it a good bit. Just had to do the same thing with my 7.3 diesel because I accidently left the key on for a few days. I carry it in the saddle bag of my bike every time I go out and have used it to help others. I also got mine on sale ($159.99) and can't say enough good about it for what it is made for.
I have had a HALO brand jump starter in both of my vehicles for years. Three years ago, I started putting one in our family's White Elephant Christmas Grab Box. Everybody wants it, every year. A great investment. You are right -- just throw it in your trunk, and recharge it, when you change out your smoke alarm batteries -- every six months.
Thank you for sharing this. We have a second house (hunting cabin) in the Texas Hill Country. I have a JD Mower, '84 CJ-7, Kubota tractor, etc. that I am always having to jump start simply because we are not up there all the time. This thing will be a life saver, just ordered one!
Thanks for tip on Freedom GooLoo jumper. I got mine yesterday, charged it up to 100% using 110v Smart Phone wall charger (not include - fyi). Have not used it yet, but a great buy. Enjoy all your videos.
Thanks so much for that tip; I just received mine but didn't think to order the wall charger. My phone charger worked great! I love this channel and now do most of my own mower maintenance.
have a husky riding mower and the battery was dead so I had a spare motorcycle battery started it mowed the lawn then went and got the standard battery (garden type) nothing come to find I'd blown that yellow fuse and it took me a WHILE to find that durn thing. finally started using a battery tender on the thing and that made a huge difference in the life of that mower battery
I bought a similar one a few years back since we had a car we didn't drive much, always forgot to start it once a week during winter. One subzero day I jumped our Highlander, the neighbors Chevy truck and the other neighbors Jeep Cherokee. He couldn't believe the little box had ability to cold start 3 different vehicles in like 15 minutes! Happy Independence day!
I have a similar product from a company called HALO. Definitely a lifesaver. I like it because it also has a USB charger and a 110v outlet which allows me to run my Flame Boss without using my generator. The GOOLOO does look more robust and protected against being accidentally dropped.
Had a so called friend do this to my garden tractor, needless to say she is never allowed to borrow anything from me again, I haven’t heard from her in a while, no love lost. This did give me a reason to repower that tractor from the old opposed 18 horse Briggs to the Predator 22 horse v twin, wanted to put a tad more power for working in the garden with it.
Well, I couldn't get a 4000 up here in Canada, but I *WAS* able to get a deal on a 3000 from eBay. THANK you for the tip - I've been looking for something like this for a while, and your recommendation "made the deal!!" Thank you! Hope you had a happy 4th!!
Thank you so much for this video. I just bought the Gooloo that was on sale. Been wanting one of these for a long time and that is a great deal and to know you recommend it made a difference to me. Thank you again!
Jump packs are convenient when equipment starts and runs fine and battery is dead. However, if you need to grind on it a while to get it started, jumper cables and a good charged battery is the ticket. I use both. Never fried a wiring system by the way.
Well, I bought one in May 2024 and it has saved me twice so far. Today I met my daughter at Kroger to fill both my car and her car because my Kroger points $1.00 off per gallon (35 gallon limit) expire at end of each month. Her car took 12 gallons, mine 13, and 10 into my two 5 gallon cans. Then her battery died. Car would not start. She said you got jumper cables? “I got something better” I said. GooLoo to rescue again. I just ordered another one tonight. I sent her home with mine. Them grandkids are not going to get stranded on my watch.
50% off is a GREAT deal, just ordered one. 2 weeks ago my wife's battery died at Walmart and i had to drive 30 minutes to reach her. While i have a great pair of cables it was a pain in the arse to reach the battery which was literally under the windshield (who designed that crap!?!?!). Of course i had to wait for a customer parked facing her car before i could get to it. It was an employees car and she saw us while taking a smoke break so came over to see what was up, she gladly moved her car and shortly thereafter my cussing began due to poor access. Could you just imagine how long i would of been there if i had to wait for someone to move? With this kit i won't have to.
I was always told the same thing on motorcycles , I done it for years no issues I done it last spring to my Harley (done it to this bike many times over the years ) and guess what fried the regulator luckily didn’t hurt the stator almost $200.00 later it was back up and running but guess who no longer jumps like that lol lesson learned
When jump starting, why does it matter if the car is running or not? 12 volts at the battery when not running, 14.x when running. Same as the tractor. Are you sure those people didn't hook up the cables backwards? THAT would fry stuff.
@@chasewebber4316 Sadly a lot of great channels are selling out these days, losing subscribers for peddling the OLight/Jackery/Chinese Fridge/Pomoly type crap "Oh yes Crappy-Product reached out to me.................10% off with my code SCAM10" etc. etc.
I love watching your videos! I don't like shirts without a pocket. If you came up with a chicanic hat, I would buy it. Thanks again for all the videos!
Couple years ago I went to jump start my riding mower, believe it was a Craftsman LT 1000. I had been jump starting it the whole season at least once a week. So anyway I hooked the jumper cables to it from my truck, don’t remember if truck was running or not, anyway jumped on my mower and I hit the switch and Boom!!! The mower battery exploded right under my seat. It was so loud and the concussion from the blast moved the hair on my legs and made my ears ring for a day! It sounded like a 12 gauge was shot off in my garage! And that is no B.S.! The battery was split diagonally across. Luckily I wasn’t hurt and neither the mower or my truck sub stained any damaged. The battery was completely dry and had no water in it at all, thank god! Funny now but scared the crap out of me then!
I know this is an older video. But I just ordered this booster from Amazon for $120 from your link. I don't know if you get any kick back, but you should! I've been wanting something like this.
Read the destructions on my goo look the boost button is on the side and very small and won’t start a really dead battery without pushing it. The big boost button on top is a huge improvement.
Last October my riding mower wouldn’t turn over so I figured that the battery was weak. The $50 booster I bought years ago just made it turn a little and I figured the starter was bad. I didn’t get around to playing with it until April and I charged the battery and booster. The battery started it with no problem. A more powerful booster would have solved the problem.
I have a JD LX176 with a 5 year old Walmart battery that starts it. That's extreme. But you can rejuvenate a lawn battery (sometimes) by turning it upside down for an hour, then right & charge it. Sound crazy? Try it.

I think what the problem is, the alternator on a car will put out more amps, and voltage when you hit the starter on the mower, causing a spike in the cars charging system, that spike is what hurts the mowers electrical system.
Good advice, and I trust/like, and
Respect this person . My only
Caution is that you will be tempted
By many lower cost options. Maybe
You should, maybe not. An older,
7.3 diesel will take about the high
End of electrical demand. Hard to
Trust online specs. I have bought
3 (not gooloo). 1st one was good
For my v6 escape, but not enough
For my 5.7 hemi. Upgrade to one
That worked and bought another
For someone close. One of the

Sorry for rambling, you can go
Alot cheaper, but in the long run,
Maybe this one is a good choice.
Note to cold climate buyers, if
It is 20 below f ,and it is in your
Car "fully charged". ..ain't gonna
Work.
Stripping for the pool. That was a nice surprise! Looking good. Thanks for your vids.
I learned this a while back. Also I was taught to always hook the positive cable first.
thank you for something I never knew. I have never tried to jump start a mower from a car but NOW I KNOW not to start the car engine.l Thanks for this.
I'm impressed. it takes a plug in boost charger and a Duramax to jump start the power stroke I deal with.
Bre, The very first link (for the jumper pack) is inop now --- 20 Aug, 2022 - Joe S -
Thanks much!
It was still an informative video though and now I know which jump starter I'll be getting next time I'm looking to buy one!Ii
i drive a 2003 ford ranger with a V6 4 liter engine the older vehicles are really reliable and a lot easier 2 work on than new trucks
That's something everyone should have, and your pool looks very refreshing 👌 😊
I believe you should hook your positive post first then the negative when hooking up and the reverse when removing them.
Just saw this video and subscribed to the channel and ordered two of the GT4000S. Thank you.
I have started my jd 130 with jumper cables before in the past, fortunately I did not start the vehicle. Thankyou for that important info 👍🏼.
When you jump start anything you hookup the positive cable first.
You deserve a refreshing swim in the pool. You’re videos are always informative. Thank you!
Got one when they first came out. ( different brand) , like10 yrs ago, lasted quite a few yrs. Got another one from amazon a few yrs ago, cranks my diesel equipment amazingly.
cool !! just ordered 2... thx chickie... :) 36 yrs lawn operator (retired) love your tips n tricks...
Was I the only one who scrubbed to the end?
Bang bang, skeet skeet !
I just bought one it is awesome as powerful as you said it is.
I have a goo lol in every car. Got them all 50% off on Amazon. Definitely a lifesaver.
Thanks for the demonstration. I clicked your link and bought one! Lookin' good!!
I love this channel and now do most of my own mower maintenance.
have a husky riding mower and the battery was dead so I had a spare motorcycle battery started it mowed the lawn then went and got the standard battery (garden type) nothing come to find I'd blown that yellow fuse and it took me a WHILE to find that durn thing. finally started using a battery tender on the thing and that made a huge difference in the life of that mower battery
will keep that jump starter deal in mind for the vehicles...
I didn't know that! Fortunately I've never done it, I just put my battery charger on it for a while. Thank you! :)
Wow .. Nice ! After just rolling up cords dragging battery charger back in shop, just a little jump..
They come in handy to jump or charge6 your phone when the powers out. Thanks chick.
I have a similar product from a company called HALO. Definitely a lifesaver. I like it because it also has a USB charger and a 110v outlet which allows me to run my Flame Boss without using my generator. The GOOLOO does look more robust and protected against being accidentally dropped.
Ordered ... thanks for much good info. I turn wrenches pretty well, but do not do well with electrical issues.
I bought one of these on your recommendation, always keep it in my vehicle for the peace of mind, have yet to use it.
I was taught very young to always hook the negative cable last to prevent arcing.
I ordered 2. One for me, and one for my brother, who has 2 old vehicles and a tractor.
got my gt4000 today had to use it already great unit
The coolest Chick ont the Interwebs !!
Love Chickanic !!
Gooloo gets you out of pickle from a DEAD battery. Doing a great job!!!
When jump starting, why does it matter if the car is running or not? 12 volts at the battery when not running, 14.x when running. Same as the tractor.
Are you sure those people didn't hook up the cables backwards? THAT would fry stuff.
Agree! It's a pity that she didn't try to explain why she believes this rather than the video just becoming a advert for the jump starter.
@@darkknight145 totally agree. Just clickbait
@@chasewebber4316 Sadly a lot of great channels are selling out these days, losing subscribers for peddling the OLight/Jackery/Chinese Fridge/Pomoly type crap "Oh yes Crappy-Product reached out to me.................10% off with my code SCAM10" etc. etc.
It's a tv commercial!
People still use a vehicle battery to jump start anything?
I have been using jump boxes for over 25 years.
Chickanic is a pro & it shows!
I love watching your videos! I don't like shirts without a pocket. If you came up with a chicanic hat, I would buy it. Thanks again for all the videos!
Just ordered my gooloo gt4000 👍
Great video as always! Now I know why my fuse blew after I jumped off my Deere! 😂 I need that jump starter - thanks for the demonstration! 🇺🇸
Yes they are awesome 👌🏼. Everyone needs at least one ❤️. Nice pool 😊
You have a top notch channel. Thanks for the great content!
Connecting the Negative to engine ground is a better way to jump start. That bypasses going through the dead battery.
Those are good tips. I also found out that jumpstarting your mower with a bad battery continuously will burn up the stator.
I learned on a John Deere x300 never to Jump Start with the jump box on negative terminal you can fry the one module I think it is ECM
I’ve been looking at those jump starters, now I know which one I’m gettin thanks👍
Great video as always your are the bomb at repairs and tips. PS, looking great in two piece 😉
Thank you Dear for all the info you share with us. I have been able to get many things fixed using your knowledge. Thanks again and have a great day.
I love that sneak peek at the end
I got the smaller gooloo jump starter and i love it
Last October my riding mower wouldn’t turn over so I figured that the battery was weak.
Try it.
