My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We see over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

I just completed an engine swap on a craftsman Z6000. It had a blown engine from the previous owner. It had a 20hp B&S, found a JD L130 rider with a 23hp Kohler. Not too difficult of a job and I now have a nice repowered zero turn to mow with. 🙂

Once upon a time I did all that stuff you just did because my mower would only run 2 3 seconds. Finally I looked at the gas cap. Yes, I poked out the hole on the gas cap and my mower ran like a banshee. ALWAYS check for a clogged vent on your gas cap. Love your videos❤❤

Had this happen too. It would run rough like it was out of gas off and on. I happen to notice one time the tank was sucked in a bit and found out if I loosened the cap when it was acting up, it would clear up. I then proceeded to poke out and blow through the vent. Ran good since.

QUESTION: Do you have a video of a riding lawn mower and how to drain bad gas from it? I'm asking because I have a mower that hasn't been used in several years. It has no visible gas inside the tank. The gas has presumably dried up. But, a repair man said there is a "bad odor" in the gas tank. Is there a way to clean the gas tank?

I just had a JD X320 come through with a Kawasaki that ran, but all it did was spit and sputter, even worse when the PTO is engaged. I put a new fuel filter on. I changed the fuel hoses from filter to fuel pump, and fuel pump to carb ( they were old and soft). I cleaned the carb and made sure the fuel solenoid was working. It still spit and sputtered like it wasn't getting fuel! On a whim, I cut the plunger off of the fuel solenoid... runs like a champ. I ordered a new fuel solenoid.

Good stuff. I'm still trying to figure out what might be wrong with my Husqvarna rider. It cranks like crazy but won't start. If I give it just a little whiff of starting fluid it's off to the races and it will run fine, shut off and restart fine. I replaced the fuel pump, assuming a weak pump wasn't getting fuel to the carb at cranking RPM, but it changed nothing. Hate to start randomly tearing stuff apart when it runs so well once it starts.

    • @anthonyesposito9251
      @anthonyesposito9251 ปีที่แล้ว

My L120 J DEERE is acting like that also. I drilled a small hole in the air cleaner and a shot of starting fluid is all it needs.Especially handy for cold weather when it won’t start at all. A small patch of tape to cover the tiny hole.

  • @delseckora5327

I have a suggestion you can try on the next one...
Unbolt the air horn from the carb before you pull the intake bolts. I have it allows eas to remove and reinstall the throttle link.
11mm socket fits the nuts on the air horn.

    I'll be honest.
Im mechanically inclined and feel confident with fixing just about anything else, but have never learned how cabs work and would always junk a product if i hear the carb is the problem.
I was about to give up at the 4 minute mark, UNTIL I heard you say "If I can do it, you can do it". For some reason that was all the reassurance I needed and to my surprise, I followed your instructions and my riding lawnmower works!
You are awesome. Thanks for keeping it simple and providing inspiration. That little comment changed the entire trajectory.

I absolutely dislike this carb. My son has one on his LA115 John Deere, 19.5hp Briggs, and it has the surging issue at low speed. Under load it does pretty good. As I had mentioned in a previous post, I worked on small engines and lawn equipment from the early 70's, after school, until 1987. Have done some odd repairs over the years, so I got a repair kit for his carb, and am pretty sure I got it in right. Still surges. I can't imagine why the small engine industry went away from the simple, fully adjustable carbs (well, I guess I can) that were easy to clean and repair, to this junk. Same thing with a 10hp Briggs on a generator I have. And of course the ethanol gas doesn't help. Glad I'm retired!

Never worked on a small engine before, bit I'm trying to get an old craftsman dyt 4000 running. electronics are good, filters are clean, fuel line seems fine, fixed the throttle cable, and I'm pretty sure the problem is with the fuel solenoid or carburetor, but that dang machine is just built to make it as difficult as possible to access. Hopefully a miracle will happen and I can pull it off

What brand of carb/fuel sys cleaner are you using that it has a mixing ball and must be shaken? I normally use Gumout brand. No mixing required.
Also, I'm currently working on a (very) old Agway rider, with a 2 cyl Briggs & Stratton. I was forced to buy a new(ish) aftermarket carb as there are no rebuild kits available. After I replace the carburetor, I'll likely fabricate my own paper gaskets and use an O-ring kit to rebuild the old one.
I'd rather just rebuild the carb, but I'm in a bit of a time crunch to get the tractor operational, and this way I can take my time rebuilding the old one and keep it as a spare.
I'm also planning on making some (relatively) minor modifications to the tractor to make it more useful this coming winter. (I really hate shoveling)

Anyone have an ideas: iI'm trying to figure if I have an air leak or a weak fuel pump? An older JD GT-262 which has an inline transparent fuel filter. Always a lot of air bubbles in it (never completely fills with fuel). Since getting to the fuel pickup and line coming from the tank is a pain, I want be 100% sure that the problem is in that direction and not just a tired fuel pump that can't keep up. Thoughts?

I thought for sure it would have been that fuel shut off solenoid. Those things are useless and evil. My Craftsman rider had one that had a mind of its own and kept killing fuel flow in the middle of a job. Rider would run for around 20-30 minutes then just die. I wound up snipping off the tip and installing a manual fuel shut off valve between the fuel tank and carb. Now after every cut, I shut off the fuel and let the engine run out of gas (everyone should install a shut off valve). The solenoid may still randomly get stuck extended but it’s too short to kill the engine.

I am delivering a sermon to you 🙏😊 please read
Consistently Pray for forgiveness, guidance in a good (positive) direction, and for help against evil. Pray to be saved from hell (whatever that may be). Pray for your friends and your family too, it only takes a minute or so/less at a time to pray. Do it and your life will slowly get better, or maybe quickly. It probably just depends on you and the kind of person you are/have been. Don't wait until its too late and you have to suffer the consequences of built up bad karma from immoral acts/unrepented sins. Maybe together we can help make the world a better place by changing ourselves for the better, and changing things around us for the better.
And addressing/thanking the CREATOR, LORD GOD at the beginning and end of your prayers would be a good idea 😊
Or just be my friend if you don't want to say the prayer 😄
I'm trying to help you get right with the LORD 🙏
    Amen.
I have worded a short prayer for you to say if you are not sure what words to use, it may not be the best but here it is 😊
    '' CREATOR, LORD GOD,
Please forgive me and my friends and my family for our immoral acts, please help guide us in a positive direction and please help us against evil. Please save us from Hell and have mercy on our souls. Thank you CREATOR, LORD GOD. Amen. ''
Please say this at least once a day for at least a month, do it longer if you want to and can 🙏
You should prostrate yourself if you don't want to do spoken prayer, or do both 🙏😊 Please worship the LORD GOD and not any idol.
Please put your hands together 🙏 bow your head and say this prayer:
"CREATOR, LORD GOD, please know that I worship you and not any idols. Thank you for everything CREATOR, LORD GOD. Amen"
Say ' Om Namah Shivaya ' out loud or in your head 108 times, or try to do it 1008 times 😊 try to do it everyday if you want
repeat this aloud for as long as you want to, try to do it for like an hour a day or say it in a prayer "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner" 🙏🙏🙏🙏
You can also say this prayer once a day or repeat it aloud as many times as you would like to:
"Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death, Amen."
    Thessalonians 5:16-18
"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."
    Philippians 4:6-7
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
"O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of mercy for us, I trust in You!" Repeat this aloud at least 3 times or as many as you want, do it everyday if you can
I apologize for all the words 😊 I know how it may look

?? Valve Cover "Doesn't come" with gasket, (no gasket installed) when new? if so, that's odd.
You Inspire the Desire to keep trying .... i shall dig deeper. : } *Thanks!*
Fuel delivery is Major Issue here, i've pathetically just given up, _for now_ - [years\months]. _rant_ sadly my Awesome *'84 Scirocco* with Excellent Engine, was rear ended, dude's insurance co. Refused to repair body, took months to get it returned, but - received FULL of Water inside & NOT Running. i bombed the court route - Failing their Duty, (make whole) plus additional damages; Not my forte'. - no fuel getting to filter. Still sits here. ... i dream, one day it will run again.
    *'95 Celica* just not starting, Great Spark - next, testing Relay, "Circuit Open", but, bet it's Fuel pump. {{{sigh}}}
lol sorry for stories, at times helps me think what i've missed. *Cheers!*

Very helpful video. My LA110 will only turn over if spraying cleaner into intake. Is that a deeper dive into carburetor? Changed gas cap, plug, fuel filter and plunger shut off is fine. Thanks.

@chickanic any chance of a VLOG why my local shop said "side valve" mower engine are better (don't break down as much) than newer OHV. ... and whats with the EXi Series (just Check and Add™ so you'll never need an oil change-ever.) motors?

My Husqvarna 46" (YTH22V46) lawn tractor runs very rough with lots of sputtering when I WARM start it, so if I turn it off for any reason, I can't use the tractor for an hour or so. It also sometimes happens when I've been running it for a while and it gets very hot. I already changed the air, oil and fuel filters, new spark plugs and put in a new carb and intake manifold ...no improvement and I'm out of ideas. Does this sound like a fuel pump issue.... or any other ideas would be greatly appreciated... ?

One of your videos suggested putting on a shut-off to the gas. I did that and the last 5 mowings, I start the JD rider up and mow about 15 feet and it dies. After a forehead slap, I reach down and turn on the gas ! I fiqure if I slap my head harder each time it will stick to open it first. 🤪

Can you do a video on changing the drive belt on the L100 / Scott’s L1742?
I was looking under there, and that looks like quite a PITA.
I haven’t seen any videos of that, and it’s move involved than doing the mower deck belt.

I have a JD L120 that has no spark. Turns over. Replaced both coils and spark plugs, gets fuel, still no spark. I don't think there is a safety not made that would let it crank and not fire. Could it be the ECM?

Ill take a nikki carb over fume injection. At least there is a 50/50 chance i can fix something mechanical. Electronic things are digital. Two states: they either work fine or dont work at all. Often they are protected from elements and reverse engineering by scratching the numbers and filled with epoxy. (Hermetic sealed) Unless you are a professional engineer with free access to a lab and can deconstruct a silicon dye layer by layer and reproduce the part, nobody is fixing any of the mystery modules of a CDI or EFI system.

My old Intek that I've maintained and kept running 19 years started dying after running a half hour or so. Cheap replacement fuel pump vent screen plugged. Vacuum line not quite seated, one tiny fold on the inside. Valve cover gasket falling apart. No or low vacuum + wimpy aftermarket pump + gas tank vent = not pumping. It is now.

How about providing a short video installing a true gasket on the valve cover please? I'm not too keen on using RTV by itself as a gasket as some factory installations use. If a small piece of that RTV breaks off later on the inside of the cover it could cause some serious problems and you might not realize it until it is too late. Thanks!

All emmission carburetors are to lean ,most need jets drilled. Constantly speed hunting back and forth is a sign if everything is clean. One size jet does not work ,different, temperatures, and altitudes require different fuel mixtures.
