- Darrell Waltrip was one of the centerpieces of the NASCAR universe for nearly 20 years. In the first of our three-part Zoom interview, DW discusses everything from the early days of his career through the crushing disappointment of losing out on the 1979 Winston Cup championship ... and a good many things in between.
Drivers like Darrell are what's missing from the sport now. He always showed his personality both good and bad. It's what connects fans to drivers and is sorely missed.
Kyle Busch does that and everyone hates it though
Awesome interview, now that Darrells not in the booth I miss him and his enthusiasm he brought to calling the race.

That was no bueno but every single other aspect of D Dubs booth career is HOF level imo
I don’t get why they had him step down. He’s better than Jeff Gordon in the booth. By far.
They just should have came up with something better to start the races.

Miss Darrell in Nascar, I don't watch as much as I did.
My 1st race was the cracker barrel 420 in 1982 in Nashville. I was a 5 year old kid and from that day I was a DW fan. I didn't care what they said about him, I thought and still think he was the greatest driver ever

I was a DW fan when being a DW fan wasnt popular. The fans back then booed Darrell like Kyle Busch gets booed today.

I love hearing D Dubya speak about Kyle Busch.
You can hear the admiration he has for that Guys Wheel Talent.
He’s always been an supporter of Kyle and you can hear the disappointment in his voice the couple times Kyle has done things that wasn’t quite what Darell expects of him
& you know for Darrell it’s not always the same ol stuff the fans cry about because DW dealt with that so he knows the fans are almost never right, but there’s still been a couple situations that DW couldn’t back Kyle up on and I’ve heard it really bum Darrell out a couple times and on the other hand I’ve heard Darrell support Kyle more than a few times , like it is what it is.
I always really liked the way DW would still speak so Highly of Kyle even when the corny fans were hating on Kyle for being The Best.
He got his nickname, "Jaws", honestly.

Racing is not what it used to be. I know older people say this all the time with everything 😆, but it just isn’t. DW would of won 100 races if he wouldn’t have taken a chance on doing his own engines. After his last win at Darlington in 92’, as a kid when I couldn’t catch the race on time I use throw a VHS tape in always believing he’d get one more win... it would have been great to see.
