The Prairie Rattlesnake and Why You Should Care

  • Why are people so afraid of snakes? Have you ever thought about what your chances of dying from a snake bite really are. You are exponentially more likely to die in a car wreak, by homicide, or even by electrocution from a toaster. On average five people die of snake bites in the U.S. every year and a number of those people are using them in wacko religious rituals and refuse medical treatment.
The prairie rattlesnake, like all venomous snakes, can kill a human but you are at least 100 times more likely to die of a bee sting than a prairie rattlesnake bite.
Venomous snakes make their poison in modified salivary glands so venom is just modified saliva. Humans begin digesting some of their food in the mouth using digestive enzymes in saliva. Venomous snakes inject their digestive enzymes, along with neurotoxins, and thus start digesting their food before they even swallow it. Their venom can be deadly but it they "waste" it on you they have to produce more before they can eat.
Please keep in mind that snakes want to get away from you as much as you want to get away from them. Think about that and give them a chance.

Rattlers, if give them room, they get away!
Except the Mojave green rattler, it's more aggressive, stands it's ground.

Ran into one of these guys just yesterday here in Colorado. It didn't rattle, and pretty much ignored me.

I don't like most creatures with 2 legs.

This is pretty much what they do, some are curious what you are and actually come to you. But they don't bite. Some are more defensive than others. It really just comes down to the individual. They're my favorite snake to interact with. Each one is different.

Fear of something can produce terrible results. Thank you for trying to temper people’s fears of snakes, therefore saving snakes!

None regulation # of legs. Two and four are okay. Six and eight are too many. Zero isn’t enough.
