I most likely saved a couple of my cousins a lot of pain once in the early 1970s when we went over to pick up a stock tank in a pasture to move elsewhere. They walked up to the stock tank and started to reach underneath it. I yelled at them not to do that, walked around to the other side of the stock tank, and dragged it over a few feet. There were two prairie rattlers within inches of where they were going to stick their fingers. Oddly enough, that was the only time I ever saw prairie rattlers underneath a stock tank out of the number of times I've had to move them, but I always erred on the side of caution.
Whenever I see a snake on a highway, I stop to chase him off (if he is alive and unharmed) so that he doesn't get run over. Not once has a rattlesnake not been happy to get off of the road, but I can't say that about bullsnakes.

I've come across about 10 rattlesnakes in my life, and 8 of them were on green mountain, in Lakewood Colorado.
I'm glad they're shy up there.. Here in Colorado they rarely even use the rattle. They just strike.
