- A Bartow couple on a birdwatching trip came across something that really ruffled their feathers: A 6-foot, 100-pound diamondback rattlesnake.

I'm from Texas and that's by far the biggest rattlesnake I've ever seen and I've come across some rattles snakes!

the eastern diamondbacks are much thicker. than the western rattlers these get up to 9 feet. they are bigger in s c and georgia around the savanna river. they also have fangs aprox teice the legnth and overall size. when these strike if its in the thigh or torso its lights out.
A former neighbor of mine who once lived in a rural Texas town told the story of snake encounters there. “Don’t manage to make eye contact with them, or they won’t let you go. I went inside our house, and a cottonmouth followed and was still looking for me through the sliding doors 🥶.” Oddly enough that couple has since relocated to Florida.
That’s because Eastern Diamondbacks are the largest species of rattlesnake and Texas doesn’t have them. Everything ain’t bigger in Texas.

1:20 I seriously doubt that a snake 6' long and 1' in diameter would weigh 100 pounds. The record for heaviest rattlesnake is 34 pounds and it was just over 7½ feet long.
I know, right? Plenty of 6 footers down here in Texas and they don't even hit 20 lbs- plus, the reporter casually referred to the Indigo snake is if it was comparible to the Diamondback- what a dork!

Some eastern Diamondbacks can get 8 ft. They are the biggest of the rattle snakes in the US I believe. This might be one of the rare cases of a fully grown specimen. My guess is survival rate for a snake this large/old in Florida, is probably low due to a large amount of predators. Amazing!
I am from SW Texas. I lived in VA Beach, VA City workers told me of killing a 14 ft diamond as they worked to reclaim part of the Dismal Swamp. Nine of ten Herpetologist state they can not grow over 6 ft. I laugh. I saw a 14 foot diamond back cross a ranch road on October night. In addition I have spoken to several other West Texans who have seen the same; not to mention, many in the 7 - 10 ft range. So watch your step! Thanks for your time. cr
I have seen a 14 footer in SW Texas and spoken to several who also had the same experience. It crossed a dirt road in front of a gate which was 14 ft wide.

This is an Eastern Diamond Back Rattlesnake. Eastern Diamond Backs are more deadly than their cousins in the desert. Western Diamond Back. They don't always rattle before they strike either.
@Keith Davis I did a little research on this Keith. Apparently Western Diamondbacks frequent that area. I was under the impression Texas on to the West coast. That one had rings around its tail before the rattles. The Eastern will have a patch of solid black or brown before the rattles. I used to live there and hunted the area north of Lakeland called the Green Swamp. I have killed a lot of rattlesnakes there. Chris was born in Bartow, FL in Polk County.
@Keith Davis Thankfully I've never seen one here!! I had a water moccasin here a few days ago. I'm in the Houma area in the slushy swampy sticks and we have a lot of snakes here. I'm going to look up the one you mentioned so I can be familiar with it. 😎
@Keith Davis yes I looked up the eastern one. Thank you for mentioning those places you won't go bc it's helpful to me to know:) There's many places I won't go either. But we go fishing in the marsh in Cocodrie and have to walk through waist high marsh and people say snakes don't go in the salt water areas but that's bs because i've seen one! I don't think it was dangerous but I don't know what kind. They even have alligators down there in saltwater. Are you from down here in this area? Do you know if those areas are dangerous?

I saw one that was at least 6ft. crossing a service road on OIA property one evening while running cargo. I slowed down and watched it cross then slide thru the fence into the palmettos on the other side. It was an impressive sight to see.

At the end of AIT, on our final FTX, we had one slither between us, as we were standing there looking at where we were going to dig defensive positions. This was near Camp Darby on Fort Benning, in Georgia. It was at least 8 feet long, probably closer to 9 feet. The girth was every bit as big around as my thigh. We saw tons more during that two weeks. Most were 2-3 feet long, I think the next longest was closer to 5 feet. Range control gave us permission to kill them if they got in or near our positions, and we did kill a few. Drill sergeant cooked one up on his Coleman camp stove, and passed around the pan. I'm from Texas, and the longest rattler I have seen was almost 6 feet long.

My Biology professor laughed when I told him about the sighting. He said they do not grow over 6 feet. I believe with advent of the internet sighting across the South are surfacing, so keep posting, and watch your step. cr

So many people have an irrational fear of these critters. They aren't really that dangerous if you understand their behavior. They're more afraid of us than the smarter among us are of them. I run across them all the time out here in CaliFORNIA. (Yes, not that many people out here call it Cali. Mostly tourists from Flori.) Yes, they're smaller here, but still scareder of us.
The area probably has no kingsnake that's why the rattle snake grow that big.

July 31, 2020----Dad used to work for the states water dept. around Homestead, Fla. many years ago. He'd take a brush cutter to clear brush from the water pipes which brought fresh water to the Keys and on a regular basis, he chopped up a bunch of rattlers & moccasins, many at 6 feet long.
Now eastern diamond back rattlers get big , they are the largest rattle snakes. But hundrad pounds, comon! Maybe 30 or 40

Hiking the AP Trail earlier this year my dog and I came face to face with a timber rattler, they normally grow to 4’, this one was closing in on 6’, had a girth equal to my knee and a head that was bigger than my hand. I called my dog to me, the snake carried on as though we were not there and eventually moved along.

About 30 yrs ago in Citronelle, NE Citrus county, I encountered an Eastern diamondback crossing a dirt road . It was early spring about 10AM. I think it was sunning to warm up because it moved so slow as I banged a metal real estate sign close to it in an attempt to get it out of the way so we didn't run over it. It took up at least half the roadway. 5 to 7 foot for sure. A snake expert at the Homosassa Springs Attraction took issue with our size estimate. We had an Impala full sized car and I assure you that it was longer than the distance between the front wheels. GrandPa as we named him slowly allowed us to pass.

I saw a seven to eight foot long rattler crossing a dirt access road near where I grew up in Southern California. It was probably a Western Diamondback and looked like it had recently eaten.
Don't you read? They do not grow over 6 feet; although, I have seen one 14 ft long. It crossed a dirt road in front of a 14 ft wide gate. Keep posting!
i,ve seen dozens of western diamond backs, gold and green mohaves, sidewinders in the sonoran desert. they are half as long as the eastern diamondback and maybe 1 5th the diameter. the fangs on the eastern diamondbacks are massive. over 4 inches long. grew up in S C near a swamp and lived for 10 years in the desert south of pheonix. both impressive on their own merrits. the snake that wakes you up the most is the side winder they like all the rest will go towards you.
There is alot of these huge eastern diamondback rattlesnakes all around the State of Georgia, north ga. but mostly in South Ga. They also have rattlesnake round-up every year, but I can't remember where in South Georgia. I found out it's in Whigham Ga. where ever that is!

We have Timber rattlesnakes in North Texas that large. A neighbor told me they come down from the mountain. I've seen one in 20 years! 6-7 foot long.
I'm from phx az and grew up seeing rattlesnake all my life and I sure can tell you I nevered seen anything like this huge mama...
That's because the Eastern Diamondbacks are the granddaddies of 'em all. That one was either full or pregnant though but they're still really gearthy snakes.
I heard a story from Benson of two cowboys killing a 10 footer later they brought it into town. Second a Native American traveling by Window Rock in a Station Wagon ran over a Diamond Back he guessed at 15 ft. They snake kept crawling. Finally I read a story of a photo tacked up in a feed store south of Tucson from 1905 which had a diamond back hanging dead from a windmill. The caption read 18 ft. You need to get out more with snakeboots! cr

Snakes actually do a lot of good by eating mice, rats and small rodents. There are a rattle snakes in Pennsylvania but about the only time they are seen is crossing the road, or someone has walked up on them, tried to get a closer look, or tried to take a picture close up. There is an old saying among farmers: If you mess with the Bull your gonna get the horns, so be safe and don't get too close.
@Craig Carper thank you for standing up for snakes: they play a very important role in the environement, as all animals do. They are despised for that ridiculous religious role they played, but its really sad in 2020 people are still ignorant of how important they are.

I was sent a letter by my step mother that I had sent to her and my dad on December 11, 1982 of when I ran across a small diamondback in Daytona Florida. Then in the early 1990 around leesburg a 6 foot had been run over on the tail. I picked it up with a stick and got it in my truck. It died soon after, I filleted it and froze the meat but I never got the stomach to cook the meat and I fed it to my turtles. They loved it. They are a few road killed moccasins too. I'd like to breed some eastern Diamondbacks as they are so damn rare now, in general.

@@jlpinson6968 the gassing of diamondback rattlesnakes is illegal in 29 States with Texas being one of the only States left that allows gassing of rattlesnake dens. Snakes that are gassed cannot be eaten safely and the amount of damage that occurs from the gas going into the dens is doing a lot of environmental damage to not only the snakes but to the other animals who live in and around these dens. These snakes that we're hibernating in the dens will not be able to go back to them and we'll have to seek a new place to hibernate and live usually that means amongst people.

I'm a native Texan , exroadie for a whole bunch of bands thru out the 80s ,90s and early 2000s plus now retired and do nothing but travel and camp out , can't help it, I'm used being on the road 💚 ....and I know my rattlesnakes , and believe me,I've seen it a whole bunch of times on news reports like this plus mostly seen it personally, but florida does have the biggest rattlesnakes in the USA 🇺🇸✌️💚
14 ft is the largest I have seen in SW Texas and spoken to others through out the Permian Basin who have seen 14 footers; not to mention, 8 to 10 footers. There was a 12 ft rattle snake found between Perry Fl and Keaton beach a few years ago. There was a picture of in the newspaper. It was taken to Fl State university, studied then returned and released.
All I have to say is there WAS one at my house that had 13 buttons and stretched across my driveway. We'll just say it's last meal was a wolfrat because when the Honda Pilot came across it it popped.

Lisa, the wildlife expert estimated the eastern diamondback weight to at least a 100 lbs. Although I cannot find an official measurement for the largest diamondback on record, I would guess it would be around 20lbs. The snake in the video appears to weight 15ls more or less

The Eastern Diamondback is the largest of all rattlesnakes. Not the longest, but it is the heaviest. I live in Georgia and there are some big ones here, especially in south GA.

I was riding my golf cart with my sister just around the neighborhood and there was what looked like a huge branch in the road. on closer inspection it was the fattest, longest rattlesnake i have ever seen. probably 6+ feet long. and yes i live in florida

Caught 2 of these in Jacksonville Fl. In my front yard 1 was about 2lbs and another about 1lb. Those were sizable, but the heaviest venomous snake is a Bush Master. That eastern diamond back in picture looks about 6-8 pounds. Just remember "objects may appear bigger in a image".
In the Opt Ala. Roundup there was one recorded 23 lbs.

I laughed so hard when she said it was 100lbs lol. My 10ft reticulated python isnt even 30lbs and hes a little chunky for a reticulated python if I'm being honest. There is no way in hell that any species of snake on earth could weigh 100lbs and only be 6ft long. Those are stupid thick proportions lol. Even the notoriously thick blood pythons aren't THAT heavy at 6ft lol.

The largest Eastern Diamondback rattlesnake ever recorded with 7 ft 9 inches long with a weight of 34 lb. It was shot and killed by a hunter named Rutledge back in 1946 and is still the largest venomous snake ever officially documented by Guinness Book of World Records. There are reports of the bushmaster reaching 12 ft in length and weighing up to 11 lb in Central America they do not get as heavy as the Eastern Diamondback rattlesnake.
Snakes are capable of striking at a distance of 1/3 of their length. This snake looks to be every bit of 7 ft possibly more.
The title should read, "large Floridian couple startles a rattlesnake that was appetizingly birdwatching.".

I have seen a great size rattle snake in Texas up on 287 rest area south of Amarillo on my way to fort worth I'm a truck driver semi truck driver so I can see a lot of people and animals from state to state......
I have seen 14 footer close to the Pecos River and spoken to many who have seen similar in the Permian Basin. From 287 I have heard a lore about a large rattler from Vernon area. What do you call a giant?
I lived in South Florida in the early 80's. I learned to use a flash light when I would go to my car at night. I saved myself from being bitten several times. Rattlesnakes are everywhere down there. Along with countless rats, there lizards etc. Awesome animals, but you have to pay attention down there, they are a fact of life.

Where he was filming was on that road heading west past Duke energy, I recognize that big burm and that intersection , I forget what highway that is , if I'm not mistaken I believe it's HWY 544 or something like that . Seen baby alligator crossing that road before

I have seen at least five documentary herpetologist from FL who say they do not grow over 6 ft. I have seen 14 ft here in SW Texas and spoken to many in the Permian Basin who have seen similar size, so keep on posting because the knuckle head experts will keep getting it wrong until enough get struck by the truth. cr

It’s the cottonmouths that you really gotta be careful around. They aren’t rattle snakes, so they don’t rattle when threatened, thus they are completely silent, and they blend into their surroundings very well.
They’ll show you a display why they’re called Cottonmouths for a reason. Even if one bites you the odds of it killing you are very slim.
Cotton mouths are mean AF. They aren’t necessarily aggressive but they are intimidating. Anytime I see something white in the woods I shoot it out of fear it’s a cotton mouth. I have seen tons and have killed some with guns, sticks, extremely large logs I was carrying in a tractor bucket and diced one up with a disc when it tried to strike at the disc and tires of my tractor. The most memorable is the time I was bush hogging in real thick brush beside our pond and one fell out of a tree I hit and luckily the PTO guard wasn’t chained because it landed on it and was ripped and shredded by the shear power of all 49 PTO horse power on the 52hp Kubota. I actually (the part that scared me the most) got hit with a medium sized (about 6 OZ) chunk from the snake. I’m glad the PTO didn’t have the guard chained and it was running. Cause if that PTO wasn’t running I probably would have turned it on and just threw the snake to the ground for it to sloth away unless I went super fast and hit it.

The world record for a cottonmouth was captured back in 1990 in the Great Dismal Swamp North Carolina / Virginia border it measured 74 in long a weight of 11 lb. It died a few days later of injuries sustained in its capture at the Philadelphia Zoo. Only one person has died in the past 52 years from a cottonmouth bite. Gilbert De Leon Was Bitten while walking in a river in Missouri back in 2012 when he was bitten. He refused treatment telling his girlfriend he could not afford to go to the hospital and died in his sleep that night. @@CountryboyCale typical cottonmouths grow to 3 to 4 ft in length and weigh three to four pounds. Males are larger than females and the eastern and Florida cottonmouth can reach 6 ft in length but that is very rare due to Habitat destruction.

That snake was much larger than 6 ft 100 lb. Look at the width of the painted line on the side of the road and then measure using the people and the paint as markers. That snake was over 8ft long. The small Road through them off. You must use the paint as your scale marker. If you have to pause the video and break out your ruler do it because Holyshit that things a monster.
It's a real good thing one of them didn't get bit because the larger the rattler, the more they can pump in and eastern diamondbacks can inject quite a bit an their fangs are huge!
