This character was ahead out of it's time. Back in the 90's only a very small % of football fans who went to games were like this now they're the majority as all the working class fans especially the young ones have been priced out

Yep sadly that’s true. The only ones who can afford to go to Premiership games now are the wealthy middle class Hooray Henry’s, especially dons south. Just look at the crowds at the England games. It’s all management types who’ve secured a few England tickets through some corporate jolly or sweetener. I remember when I used to go to the Birmingham city matches way back in the early 90s when were in the old division 2 and kids could get in for a quid. That’s why I don’t even bother with football now, it’s all money and the few that can afford it, I don’t even watch England play anymore, which is why I’m more into Rugby league now..

I literally sat in front of 'this guy' once. Not long after hull city got their new stadium and there was a surge in new supporters, although we were in the old 3rd division still. Was watching a crappy midweek evening match against Barnsley and the bloke behind me would not shut up comparing every players abilities vs Beckham! Player gets tackled - loses the ball 'he's no Beckham'. Player takes a half decent shot at goal 'he's a budding Beckham'.
Hilarious and annoying all at the same time.

I had a friend who used to interrupt every foot convo we were having with "Beckham's a real talisman isn't he." He said it like he was saying the wisest thing ever. I didn't notice at first but when I did I laughed so much. We liked the guy so we never let him know we knew that he only ever said one thing. Man Utd fan from West London in case you were wondering.

Mark Steele used to do a bit in his standup routine where he described spending time with his friends who were all petrol heads.
He said I only knew three things. Austin Allegro? Rusting all agro more like.
FIAT? - Stands for Fix it again Tony.
And one more i cannot remember (comedians' rule of 3, of course).
As all my friends were car fans, not footy fans, I really related to that routine. It's the same thing... people trying too hard to be into whatever their friends like doing. It's cringe, but often hilarious.

Hence why at most premier league grounds esp the newer ones the atmosphere is generally is Flat, staged, stale.

Get your point - genuinely hope the Royals get back this year, playing good football. The first year you got up under Coppell was a revelation - Doyle etc were superb. I was there for our cup game and did stay until the end if only to see Chamakh score which was something of a rarity. I remember Elm Park - proper ground unless it rained!

@@rogerramjet5302 cheers mate. as sad as it was to see the back of Elm Park, we desperatly needed an upgrade to progress. To finish that high in the Premier League was disappointing. Missed out on Europe on goal difference, then got relegated the following season. Clubs like Chelsea taking our players for next to nothing and shoving them in the reserves (eg Kitson) hurt us badly.

@@Clem_Fandango11 tell me about it! Ashley Cole, Fabregas, Giroud - admittedly some of those departures were from the club but then add in Van Persie, Clichy, Nasri etc and we’ve been a feeder club too. Youve had some great players over the years with Quinn, Gilkes, Lita, Long, Hislop etc. Showing my age but I do miss grounds like Highbury and Elm Park - remember a match many moons ago when you sang to us ‘are you Swindon in disguise?’. I knew a guy at work like this. Constantly going on about his love for our local team, constantly talking about football to people who clearly had no interest in it and then mocking them for having no interest in it. Then one day one of the older guys, who was a through and through true fan of the local team, had enough and tested him in front of everyone to assess his merit as a fan. Stuff like "how many times have you been to a game" (never it turned out), "what do you think of the new signings" (couldn't answer). Watching this self professed football fanatic shrivel in front of a proper fan was hilarious.
