I love the wizard of Oz, it's a true cultural classic imo, saying that I'm not really interested in watching this movie, still wanted to see Jeremy's take anyways.
Agreed with everything here except the part one/part two breakup. Being an adaptation from Broadway, Broadway plays always have an intermission halfway through. Without expecting that, I can understand why this would be foreign and potentially disappointing. After the broadway intermission, that takes usually 15 minutes or so, you can continue the story and finish it by the end of the night. We can’t do that here until the second portion is released. Go see it, as a Broadway fan, I really appreciated this film.
They wanted a faithful adaptation at the risk of not knowing if casual fans like me would be on board just watching half of the story now. Would I be back a year later to see where this goes? Probably yes but for the rest, only a huge box office hit would bring them back for the sequel. So hopefully, the same magic it had in the stage for 20 years would rub off in the movie.
Here's a shocker for those who don't know, Ariana Grande was an actor before she made music. If she's a standout in this, you shouldn't really be all that surprised. She was effing great on the show Victorious.
I recently read the book not having seen the play thinking the play and book would be similar…..wrong…..the book is WAAAYYY too adult and not plot heavy at all. Super weird because I’d read the first 7 Oz books and they were all kids books. Wicked got dark extremely quick. I hear the play is amazing tho. This movie looks good.
I understand it’s a musical and fans are excited, but me being a neutral wanted to see this as a film. People at my theater took this opportunity for a sing along karaoke and made the film unbearable and made it seem longer than what it was. Don’t be that person.
Musical or not, it sounds like people have forgotten movie etiquette. If you wanna sing along, go do it at home, not in a room where other people paid for their tickets.

Surprisingly positive review aside (For a movie that looks more like a Saturday Night Live commercial sketch) Finding out it's one of those part-1 of the saga type things, fuuuuuuu..... .... 🃏
This movie is really the act one of the play bit by bit but the songs are more well realized and dynamic. The only real padding or expansion per say it's Elphaba's childhood which are very short scenes, the Madam Morrible's spell lessons which are also very short and the subplot of the animals is expanded upon and given much needed time on top of new scenes entirely. I think the animals subplot will take center stage in the second movie because the play somewhat overlook it in act II but it's a big part of the book and I think they'll bring proper closure in movie part II. But that's pretty much it.
People whining about the movie being split into two parts probably haven't seen the play or read the book. The movie ends exactly where the play's intermission starts. Everything in this movie followed its source material pretty well. If you liked the play, you'll probably love this movie. It's essentially the play with a $145M budget.
The amount of people commenting.. "I know nothing about the book or the musical and I haven't seen the movie yet.. but ,It doesn't need to be 2 parts"... is crazy to me. The concept that a person can know nothing at all about a topic but still feel they can have , and post an opinion on what the topic should or shouldn't be... is.. astounding to me. That's like me saying.. "I've never seen a basketball game and know nothing about the sport... but I heard they have some net just hanging in the air. They shouldn't need a net". Having an opinion on something you know nothing about... is... astonishing. And yet... so many people seem to do just that. Why not save your opinion and comment for once you've seen the movie... or musical.. or read the book? Then you'll have some substantial knowledge to give merit to your thoughts... but I guess these are the same people saying "I didn't know it was 2 parts" even though they made a huge announcement about it over a year ago...I guess the saying is true.. most people don't think.. they just talk. Or in this case.. post/ comment. 🤔🤦🏿♂️🤷🏿♂️😂😅😅
This ^^^ This movie was announced as two movies. It's always been two movies. It seems like people watch trailers for movies that they might want to see and then that's all. They're not like oh there's this thing called the internet, let me look this upcoming movie up, because I feel like you had to read about wicked for less than 5 minutes to figure out it was two movies. For me like I love wicked, I saw it in 2003, and most of the memorable stuff musically is in Act 1, which tells you that Act 2 needs more love than to just be crammed into a film with act 1
I'll never understand the hate musicals get, especially when it's live. It's very impressive what can be done, and from what I've heard, this is pretty damn good. Edit: Yeah, the movie basically ends where Act I of the musical does so your opinions are valid
Musicals are like pizza's. People who love them LOVE THEM A LOT ..... people who hate them HATE THEM A LOT. It's not something you can understand (like taste), it's something you accept as a fact of humanity.
I absolutely adore musicals when they're executed it properly. Then again, music is very hard to pleased everyone and so is storytelling so it's a choice whether you like the story to be present it in a musical way or not
I was very skeptical about Ariana Grande when she was casted as Glinda knowing that she has a huge shoes from Kristin Chenoweth to fill. After seeing the movie? Damn it, somebody give her a freaking Oscar! So happy that Ariana convinced me that she was the Glinda that the movie deserves 🙌
My moms excited about it! She and I went to a joint event back in 2016 where the same venue had both a comic con and the stage show of this play. Granted it didnt last as long but our 2 hour car ride home gave us both something to talk about.
Haven't seen it yet but the runtime does concern me. They took a 2 hour musical and stretched it to 2 2.5 hour movies. Also 100% agree about Return to Oz. It gave my little sister nightmares for months...
@BB-ed4om and the biggest critique the musical got is that it felt rushed.. it skipped over so much of the story. The book is really dense and tells over 40 years worth of a story. The book honestly should have been 2 books. There's no way they could have told the whole story in one movie and do it justice.
The musical was 2 hrs and 45 minutes or so. And there's a lot of setup that needs to be done in a film that doesn't need to be done in a stage musical.
@Cmmdirects82 the musical is not a direct adaptation of the book. The first section is covered in the opening number. The musical is mostly sections 2 and 3 with a little bit of 4. The central love triangle of the musical does not exist in the book.
Jeremy is the absolute best or at worst my favorite movie reviewer. He's so polished and yet fun. He seems to be making it up as he goes sorta like Indiana Jones. Always looking forward to his review. Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas 🎄 Jeremy...oh yeah can't wait to see WICKED 😂

People are in the comments saying this is common knowledge. The title of this video is the first time I heard it! And I'm so glad, because now I know to wait and see whether or not part 2 is any good.

I was NOT expecting this review from you! Wow. Musicals are one of my fav genres in film so I watch A LOT of old musicals since they make less & less of them with each passing decade since the 1970's. Then after seeing La La Land in 2016 I said I would never again trust Hollywood to make a real musical since they did such a great job at advertising the most unmusical musical I've ever seen as a big romantic musical. Then a year later comes The Greatest Showman which IMO is one of the GREATEST musicals of all time! Right up there with The Sound of Music & Singing in the Rain. I didn't have high hopes for Wicked especially with who they chose as the 2 main stars which IMO are nowhere near as talented as Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, but after this review I will give it a try. Thanks Jeremy! :)
I never seen the musical, but I loved every minute of this movie. They leads stole the spotlight every time they're on. And the songs, they're earworm worthy. Also, the original Broadway cast does make a cameo in the Emerald City. And I kind of knew this would be a 2 parter, and I didn't really mind that.
Not too surprised this turned out to be good, but the actress’s meltdown over a fan edit of the poster definitely soured it for me. Not that I was very interested in the IP to begin with, so pass.
Social media was a mistake, not only because of Erivo's nasty overreaction to some harmless fan art, but also bc some ppl will grossly overreact to Erivo's one human error & punish an entire movie for it. To both parties, it's not that deep.
For me it was the thought process and disgusting world view revealed in the meltdown. The whole thing was a dog whistle to tell the normal people she doesn’t want their money.
I watched Wicked on Broadway back in high school and I remember it being great… though that was a long time ago so I don’t remember why I thought it was great, but I remember loving it so I look forward to getting round to this film (though the internet drama with the Elphaba actress made me a bit hesitant) but I’m with Jeremy on Return to Oz. I love the childhood horror movie that we got and the fact that that’s what the entire book series is only makes me more annoyed that nobody’s been allowed to do another book-accurate adaptation since.
I actually look forward to this movie. I think the trailers look great and I have not seen the play, but have heard some of the music like Defying Gravity which is a banger, and am extra curious now.
They're doing a sing along showing of it in December I believe. So people need to keep it there. The people ranting about gatekeeping should remember what etiquette is. As a big fan of the musical having seen it on Broadway people should know that just like when you go to live theatre you should respect the medium. If you want to sing along come back when they do that, wait until it's at home, or listen to the soundtrack. Don't ruin it for others. Let them experience the magic.
I think I’d rather be eviscerated than watch this. I’ve long hated the trope of re-imagining female villains as misunderstood anti-heroes (Maleficent, Cruella, Evil-Lyn) and this play is essentially what created it. But hey, power to y’all that enjoy it.
Oh, Jeremy! You're missing out. It's my top 2 all-time favorite Broadway musical ever, 2nd only to _Rent_ . I've also read the book, which is so much darker than the musical that was adopted from it. All the songs are catchy, IMO. "Defying Gravity," "For Good," and "As Long As You're Mine" are my faves.
Five hundred twenty-five thousand, six hundred minutes Five hundred twenty-five thousand moments so dear Five hundred twenty-five thousand, six hundred minutes How do you measure, measure a year? You got seasons of love stuck in my head again.
@@Allmightyimortal LOL! Don't even get me started on Rent. I love that musical so much, I saw 3 or 4 versions of it. But the OG cast is still the best. Cheers!
I do love the Wizard Of Oz movie 1939. But my all time favorite musical movie is the 1965 classic The Sound Of Music. One of the best musicals ever in movie history. My parents and I have no interest in watching anything coming from Hollywood anymore. Right now the real and actual entertainment and fun is movies made by Japan, South Korea, Angel Studios, other Indie movie companies, or we will just be picking and choosing on which movies that we will be watching.
It's not as bad as most. It's closer to Empire Strikes Back than Deathly Hallows pt 1. I think I liked the pacing better than Dune 1 though that could just be because I didn't know the story by heart. It never drags, and I thought it felt shorter than it was. Still, it's harming the storytelling imo, because the high concept stuff that made me as a general media nerd really take notice is at the end of the play. Then again, one could say the same for Empire and Jedi. The main thing the split means is that they can avoid cutting anything while letting scenes breathe, and without leaning on some of the storytelling conventions used to abbreviate scenes for pacing in stage plays. And they inserted an extra fan service scene with the actors who first played the two witches, but that 5 minutes and supplies some backstory and worldbuilding.

Thank you for bringing Wicked to the whole world in the big screen ❤️
It’s online. The whole broadway show is easy to find.
I love the wizard of Oz, it's a true cultural classic imo, saying that I'm not really interested in watching this movie, still wanted to see Jeremy's take anyways.
Great review Jeremy!
Also I hope you haven't forgotten about The Penguin Review. 🤔
LOL oh please, it's a money grab, nothing more.
The movie was better than I expected 👍🏻

The positive reviews of this movie by TH-cam dudes who share similar views as myself makes me interested in this movie.
Honestly, SUPER solid review. Excellent movie (never saw the broadway show, but definitely know the.. popular tunes). This is why I enjoy coming here.

I understand it’s a musical and fans are excited, but me being a neutral wanted to see this as a film. People at my theater took this opportunity for a sing along karaoke and made the film unbearable and made it seem longer than what it was. Don’t be that person.
You dont get to gatekeep what people do only the management can
Jesus that sounds like a nightmare.
What did you expect? This movie was created for:
- fans of the book/broadway
- little girls
- grandmas
This movie was meant to be sang along to
Piece of advice, don’t watch musicals.
Musical or not, it sounds like people have forgotten movie etiquette. If you wanna sing along, go do it at home, not in a room where other people paid for their tickets.
Eat your heart out, Disney. Wicked captured the magic and whimsy Disney has long since abandoned.
With DEI. This movie is filled with it. Might as well be a Disney movie
@@hulkfan97It’s okay. The DEI monster can’t hurt you.
I didn't know Wicked isn't Disney film

I know it won't but I am tired if it ruining big IPs. If it were once in awhile thats one thing. But every movie now has to have diversity regardless if its needed. Some movies now how to do it well like Top Gun Maverick. This however is too in your face. Heres the black heres the fat heres the gay heres the Asian
@@hulkfan97 Oh no, colored people in my movies how horrible
Surprisingly positive review aside (For a movie that looks more like a Saturday Night Live commercial sketch) Finding out it's one of those part-1 of the saga type things, fuuuuuuu..... ....

Yet another tier review for a great movie, with the bonus of two shout outs to Legacy of Kain, and Return to Oz! Love it! 😆
Thanks for this, JJ. We've been looking forward to your perspective, and you didn't let us down!
As a HUGE fan of the musical, I had high expectations for this film. My expectations were surpassed!!! Sooooo good!!!!! Everyone see it!
People whining about the movie being split into two parts probably haven't seen the play or read the book. The movie ends exactly where the play's intermission starts.
Everything in this movie followed its source material pretty well. If you liked the play, you'll probably love this movie. It's essentially the play with a $145M budget.
I’m assuming part two is just straight up going to be the Wizard of Oz from Elphie’s perspective. Which is honestly honestly a legit great idea.
I've been really into Creedence lately, good shit indeed Jeremy
When viewers who've never seen the musical, enjoy it, you know it's a good film then. 👍🏻
I'll wait for the next. I'm part one out
CCR - timeless music.
Nah I didn’t care it was only part one THIS MOVIE IS GREAT
I'll never understand the hate musicals get, especially when it's live.
It’s cheesy and unnatural
I absolutely adore musicals when they're executed it properly. Then again, music is very hard to pleased everyone and so is storytelling so it's a choice whether you like the story to be present it in a musical way or not
@@ChadAV69 It really does depend on the musical, man
@@800Ms-k6n Taste .... not choice. It's just like food, either you like it or you don't. You don't have to think about it and make a choice.
My daughter wants to see it - I said I'm not paying money until I see this review! lol
Thanks, man, now I guess I have to see this. :(
I was very skeptical about Ariana Grande when she was casted as Glinda knowing that she has a huge shoes from Kristin Chenoweth to fill. After seeing the movie? Damn it, somebody give her a freaking Oscar! So happy that Ariana convinced me that she was the Glinda that the movie deserves 🙌
Return to OZ is my childhood favorite! The ornament room is so trippy!
The witch dies in the end.
But actually…

Tell me you’re not familiar with the musical’s story without telling me.
Saw Glicked last night. Fun experience!
The musical was way longer than 2 hours when I went to see it. It was way too long imo.
@noahkahan4364 you think there is enough "setup" to double the runtime of the musical???
PART 1?!?
Yeah Part 2 is Next Year
Gotta make ALL the money
@@benv7933its a great choice to make it into two parts or else it would be so rush, glinda and elpahaba friendship was so rush in the musical, in the movie it was not, they includes all the songs in the musicals which most of them 7 minutes+ each songs. its not just a money grabing thing, they did the book and the musical justice
People are in the comments saying this is common knowledge. The title of this video is the first time I heard it! And I'm so glad, because now I know to wait and see whether or not part 2 is any good.
I had a really fun time and felt like the songs hit the right notes. Sets up part 2 for hopefully greater payoffs, I really wish going into it we knew it was gonna be a 2-parter. Cynthia and Ariana really take the cake!
Cynthia Erivo's tantrum about the fan made poster lost any interest I had seeing this

1:09 lucky for Jeremy this is the only musical this year…one too many for me 😅
Right! Exactly! The number of times I have seen someone say something like that is astronomical.
Jeremy went wicked out to see wicked
Just walked out of the cinema. It's long, defying gravity is almost 20mins on its own as a sequence but the effects at the end is worth it, I took my girls and...... I loved it.
Wicked, yes, bit what going on with Legacy of Kain thing?!
Not authentic to the original character, they didnt use the toxic copper based make up smh
They should have.
How dare they cover her skin with green paint and her body with black robes? Totally oppressive
Lol nice
This literally slowly killed the actors from that film. They almost killed Judy with uppers and not letting her eat too.
@traviss9059 thank you, I think in order to understand this, one needs the prerequisite knowledge of this history that is well known.
Still waiting for your bioshock infinite spoiler review (day 892)
Saw it last night. It was awesome! So much talent.
Not too surprised this turned out to be good, but the actress’s meltdown over a fan edit of the poster definitely soured it for me. Not that I was very interested in the IP to begin with, so pass.
I'm passing too. Not fan of the cast in this
Social media was a mistake, not only because of Erivo's nasty overreaction to some harmless fan art, but also bc some ppl will grossly overreact to Erivo's one human error & punish an entire movie for it. To both parties, it's not that deep.
So why are you talking?
For me it was the thought process and disgusting world view revealed in the meltdown. The whole thing was a dog whistle to tell the normal people she doesn’t want their money.
@@oneoone "one human error" -- you say that like her thoughts, words, and actions aren't revealing of her character.
Did we know it was a Part 1? I didnt know that 😆
I've been waiting for a good black Friday deal on displate. Thank you sir.
2:28 I mean perfectly put
Not claiming anything on Jeremy's behalf, but I wonder if that was a nod to how Trump has been portrayed in the media lol
I actually look forward to this movie. I think the trailers look great and I have not seen the play, but have heard some of the music like Defying Gravity which is a banger, and am extra curious now.
1:17 to skip to review
Patience in a virtue, but, in this chance, I don't blame you. Especially when this video's already pretty short.
"Slow burn with high energy" Sounds like heartburn
4:21 Rebecca Ferguson's character shouldn't have been killed off in 'Dead Reckoning'.
That film sucked.
I 2nd that

Victorious on Nickelodeon was her best work. She's a very good actress.
Bet. The end credit scene of the second movie you see a little girl with her black dog appear on screen 😮
@therealsun86 nope.. that's the middle. Well actually.. you already see her at the beginning of part one.
The film literally opens on The Wicked Witch's death echoing through Oz, thanks to the actions of Dorothy and her group.

@@Allmightyimortal LOL! Don't even get me started on Rent. I love that musical so much, I saw 3 or 4 versions of it. But the OG cast is still the best. Cheers!
Glad to see Jeremy Jahns with a happy face with this film.
Part 1 movies are an automatic skip for me during their theatrical runs
I was ok with IT. Needed both parts but 🤷🏻♂️
If the conclusion is guaranteed, I dont mind it.
Had to stop watching the second you said Blood Omen was available on psn. Got it now. Thank you, sir! I finished your review. As always, great content!

He’s been sponsored by Displate before and we got one because of it. It’s so worth it. I love posters but protecting the flimsy paper or having to pay to get them framed is so annoying.
@ Oh glad to hear it!
Return to Oz is💯 my favorite Oz movie. It combines two of my favorite Oz books into a single creepy movie without needing to be a musical. And the amazing Fairuza Balk as Dorothy was perfection,
As a dude who has a mixed relationship with musicals and knew NOTHING about this, I saw this last night and shockingly loved it
You knew nothing about this? You never saw any of the slew of advertisements they made?
@LuznoLindo Well, yeah, of course but I had no idea it was based on an original musical. I just thought it was another one of the many half-assed spin-offs Hollywood has attempted to profit off of.
I know nothing about Ariana Grande but she was very fun to watch and I enjoyed the chemistry and its evolution between her and Elphaba. I'm not a musical fan but very excited to see where it goes with Part 2
For me anymore. Even when Part 1 is good. I have to wait until Part 2 to judge it entirely.
Because we all know how The Last Jedi fucked that all up.
