Update No.2 from dismasted Sailing Aquarius

- We made it to Martinique. Circumnavigation is complete. But Aquarius is in terrible condition. So much to do and we are a bit lost. Insurance already sent survey, inspection starts, couple days later the broken masts removed and we just trying to keep up and not to crash. Extreme heat doesn't help either. We are not in a position mentally or physically to make full edited videos yet, just sharing what we can...
Anyways, join us as we share our experience and thoughts...
And thanks so much for watching 🙏
Stay tuned as next Friday 12PM EST we release a new video 🎥

Thank you for the update. Frankly that a boat that is maintained to your standard could have such a failure is incredible. I goes to show how complex boats are. I cannot wait to hear why the surveyor found
Me too, wish to hear what caused the collapse of the mast
Congrats on the circumnavigation. You are the 6th channel to circumnavigate AND upload to TH-cam the entire trip.

Glad you made it safely to shore. Now the work begins. And the fight with your insurance company.
That's going to be tough. The survey would have to conclude that the incident was not due to fair wear & tear; nor a maintenance deficiency nor some installation issue but to some unforeseeable, insurable event (like an out-of-season weather event).
Insurance not paying for that.
Wow! Who can boast such a history on the final leg of an circumnavigation! Across the Atlantic without a mast! Glad you’re made it!
Hats off to you two. Job well done.
What a traumatic experience. Congratulations on getting Aquarius, and yourselves to port. When we sunk and recovered our 22' racing boat, we were able to find the aluminum company that originally extruded the mast for the boat. They still had the die for the mast in storage, so they were able to extrude a new 30' bare stick for the new mast. We were able to remove the shrouds, top assembly, gooseneck, etc. from the old mast and install them on the new mast and the boat lived to race again. Good luck to you guys and Aquarius.
Congrats guys. Question, are you going to circumnavigate again or just hang around the Caribbean and continue live aboard life. It looks like you’re undeterred and ready for more. You two are amazing. 👍👍
Congratulations on completing your lap around the World! Very sorry that the last 1200nm were so difficult! Your display of seamanship, perseverance and creativity in not just living through the mast disaster but getting Aquarius back safely to Martinique is unparalleled. Well done! Take a well deserved rest while the insurance company and your surveyor get matters sorted out.
Glad you made it okay! I hope the survey finds a cause of this incident, and I hope you will share it with us because to be honest, for an Amel maintained the way you do it, it seems impossible for this to just have happened and it'd be interesting to know...
Cheers. Look on the bright side. you're alive.😊
So nice to see you smile again. You made it!! Yahooooo🎉❤❤.
Congratulations on the completion of the circumnavigation. And congratulations on coping with all the has happened. You are a brave staunch couple. I hope you can save Aquarius.
Both showed amazing resilience under terrible circumstances. Avoiding serious injury is a major result and getting there in one piece is amazing. Enjoy the fizz!!
Well done! And thanks for sharing your journey. Hoping you can find another Amel mast and get back to your journey. Stay well!
🥂 to circumnavigation…you folks rock! You did it! For Others dismasted check Sailing Parlay Revival. Sorry for your losses and wish u all the best esp with insurance. 🇨🇦 ❤
So happy you guys are safe and completed a circumnavigation as well. Pity that the ending wasn't as planned but you both kept on going and persevered! As to the mast, I wouldn't be surprised if internal corrosion and age are a factor in the collapse. Be careful getting older masts.... All the best!!!
Yeah, I think internal corrosion is one of the only things that makes sense if basically everything was intact in the rigging. Maybe the motor inside the mast was causing some sort of electrical corrosion or even just having different metal in its mounting touching aluminium. Only other option that I can think of is that maybe one of the lower shrouds lost locking pin and got untightened over time.
We had our 35 year old mast sandblasted back to bare metal on re-rigging. We were astounded to find it in perfect condition inside and out.
Likely metal fatigue at a weak point in the mast like an exit point .These failures usually start that way ,a hole or an attachment concentrates stress and it fails there . That is why planes do not have square windows .
If it is a factory installation common to these boats that was the fail point they should let the Amel community know so everyone can check and monitor their boats . This is one advantage of a boat with larger production numbers , others can warn you of potential weak spots
Guys, your family and I am very proud of the survival tactics you taught all of us! The most important thing to me is you as a couple demonstrate the power of marriage in the darkest of hours! If Wendy and I can do anything we would. Know this , our 30 acres in the woods has room for a visit from you both ! It’s not a hotel but Wendy does a great job of hosting our family! We love you both and hope you make plans to come out to Missouri! Love you Bobby
I can only assume how relieved your are with arriving in Martinique. Really impressive story but I assume without it it would have been easier. Congrats - you made it and this is something you should see really positive.
Well done Captain. Crew is home safe and the boat back at the dock. It will be interesting to hear if the other commenter that had a similar experience has information that pertains to your situation.
I don’t know if I could be a cool as you two if I had just gone through what you did. As if circumnavigation wasn’t enough you finished of with a masterful bit of survival and seamanship.
I praise God that the both of you are safe! Such a bittersweet end to an incredible journey! Now, I’m looking forward to a new and improved Aquarius!!
Respect guys, it is huge feat what you have done. Good luck with reparations
Big or small. Everyone is alone at sea and everyone will lend a hand if they can. Looking forward to hearing what the engineers/insurance has to say. Everything is fixable but understanding how/why is very important.
Congratulations! There was a company in Turkey as well that is producing new masts at a very competitive price. When you look for segmented masts that can be put together with rivets that could be a solution too regarding transportation (costs).
Congratulations on your circumnavigation! Glad you are safe and Aquarius is insured and repairable.
Well done!it will be interesting to see what the surveyor/engineers report.and congratulations on your circumnavigation! 🎉
Good to hear from you guys!
After going through a lot of footage, I found one boat that had the mast folded up like yours, same place. In slow motion it became very clear that that is a weak spot when sailing downwind and broaching. In your case it could have been more if a material fatigue, after all the years.
Ken,
Your comment regarding maintenance was spot on. That was a significant factor in being able to make it to Martinique. A good diesel will run like that, but it needs to be in good shape. Glad you two made it safely. Hard to imagine what it was like with thousands of pounds of mast and equipment rolling around on the deck for ten days.
All fingers and toes accounted for and no sewing required on heads. Good to see you both safe.
So relieved yer safe👍 Ya folks earned a Break…Wishing successful rebuilding of Aquarius…Continue to Stay Safe and Enjoy 😎
So glad you’re all right, and made it‼️ I have tears of joy due to your safe return.
Bravissimi grande avventura finita bene
Waiting for this one. You 2 have a bunch of folks emotionally invested in you. Me included. Good job Cap’n Ken and Admiral Z. ❤

💙💙❤❤
What a relief to see you safe and sound ❤❤❤ nothing is more precious than your lives. You had angels all around you. 🎉🎉🎉 I hope you can rest now.
Amazing , you put new meaning to the expression 'Going that extra mile' , you did 1200 of them!
Glad you made it back!
Great to see you have got the crossing done..... huge weight off your shoulders and the end of your nightmare situation.... Nice to see everyone helping you and it must be forever humbling... the feeling of that support.... Seen a lot of your videos... not all of them! But its been fantastic being a voyeur to your journey.... Congratulations.... sleep well both! Cheers.....
Yeah is it an amazing how people are so willing to shell out their money for rich people?
If they only did the same thing for poor people the world might be a nicer place.
Congratulations on achieving your circumnavigation. Certainly not as you imagined or deserved. Your determination, strength of character and outlook are fantastic. Huge respect ❤
So good to see you both.
Bravo, Nothing else to say. You are all safe, Aquarius is safe despite been « sick »
So enjoy Martinique.

Thanks for the update and congrats ! Now I can put my lower jaw in its proper place ; it was dangling on the floor since last week!
YOUR BACK SAFE AND SOUND ! GREAT NEWS ! TAKE IT EASY AND REST ! PTSD GOES AWAY IN TIME ! JUST GIVE IT TIME !
Great job Team Aquarius making it safe to Martinique.
Congratulations, Admiral and Captain!! You made it in a very special way and with LOTS of "emotion"! Nice to see you're both well and that Aquarius is in good shape, except for the masts and rigging. But soon she'll be in fine shape again.
I agree with you in not throwing the masts at sea. I might be wrong, but I feel their weight helped on stability at sea even if putting a price on fuel. What counts is that our favorite crew is fine, having a champagne! Always a good idea! All the best!
Oh, let's not forget ALL hte good guys at sea always ready to give anybody a hand! THANKS!
Congratulations on your circumnavigation. Was so happy to hear you made it to Martinique. Good luck with the repairs to Aquarius! What a trip! Thanks for sharing.

Thank God you guys are safe. Congratulations on your circumnavigation‼️ ⛵️🍾👏
Congratulation. Well done. And as always, tough times are part of what makes the true adventure.
I cannot imagine the relief you must have felt on arriving!
Huge congratulations on the circumnavigation! And thank goodness you guys made it safely.
Survey and Insurance! There is your next topic for a video. A topic most of us know very little about unless you owned a large boat before. Fact is, these things can happen to anyone for a variety of reasons. Anything from bad maintenance, bad installation to manufacturing faults can lead to disasters. My question, how do you protect yourself financially from these events? What does an insurance covering this cost for a boat like this and what processes are involved (surveys etc) to actually see your damage covered?
Congratulations on completing the circumnavigation! Considering this last leg, an incredible achievement! Praying that the insurance/survey/refit goes as smoothly as possible and that Aquarius is returned to her fullest glory!🎉⛵️🙏🏻❤️🎉
Bravo, bon travail, relieved, congratulations.
I’m glad you guys made it safely to le marin. Hopefully you get all the work and insurance stuff sorted out quickly so that you really enjoy what you’ve accomplished.
Well Done. Respect for your seamanship under crisis conditions. Hope all goes better for you both in the refurbishment
Congratulations on the circumnavigation! Even if it's bittersweet at this point, the way you handled this last leg of your journey is another example for the rest of us.
