SWFL Eagles_ CROW Removes Precious E14 H & M Protect Their Area From Intruder 01-15-20

- It is a sad day today as E14 passed away early this morning. CROW was able to come and retrieve E14's precious remains and the non-viable egg to determine the cause of death. M15 was in the nest when CROW arrived and left as the bucket was raised to the nest. M vocalized warnings and circled the nest tree before perching at a distance. As CROW and the truck were leaving, Harriet arrived to the nest tree, vocalizing at a 3-4 yr old sub adult circling the nest tree. M arrived to help Harriet secure the territory. They remained in the nest tree before Harriet dropped to the nest. Soar high and free little one. You now have your wings. You will always be part of H & M and tucked tight in our hearts. We will find strength observing Harriet, and M15 as they grieve.

My heart is broken. Every night, before I put my phone away, I would go to the live cam to say good night and leave them with a kiss. I have never let anyone in my family see me do this, because some just did not understand my love for this family. I am soo sorry for Harriet and M. And wonder what will they do for all the month’s ahead of them , where they would have been raising their beautiful baby. So sorry for all of us that have watch this nest for years now. 😥🕊Love to all of you. And especially Vicki. Please take care.❤️
I don't know if this gives you some comfort: E-14 was loved by many people, and of course her dear parents. Her soul pure, innocent is roaring in Heaven right now, for some reason God decided to take her away from this Earth. Maybe God needed this little angel in Heaven
I still find this so heartbreaking. So hard to believe this eaglets not on its nest. This baby would gobble down all kinds of food. Different varieties. At night the eaglets presence is with Harriet and M15. They both took good care of their precious baby. 26-27 days of happiness and enjoyment for all of us watching it grow. I will never ever forget this day. RIP my baby. Soar in the skies with the other eaglets who are no longer with us. Luv you.

@@saskia9m everything was done as soon as possible when it was noted that E14 was ill. I am sorry for your grief. We are still all grieving.
My heart is crushed. I would like to add this info for all bird owners and potential bird owners. They did verify it was a blood feather break not a fishing hook. Broken blood feathers act like straws. They are very dangerous for birds and can be deadly very quickly. I have 6 conures, 5 cockatiels and 2 parakeets. If they break a blood feather i have to pull the remains of the shaft immediately because sometimes you do not even have time to get them to a vet. Birds are great at acting like nothing is wrong even when blood is present. Its their nature so predators dont seek a weak or injured bird. Trust your eyes and not how they acting. If you have birds and they break a blood feather there is styptic powder you can keep on hand, cornstarch or flour that will encourage clotting once the shaft is pulled. I wrap them in a towel gently to help them feel secure and it helps me control them. Any bleeding is never a good sign ever. My prayers went out for E 14 last night. We now have an angel looking out for us. Thank you wskrsnwings for this video.

Thank you for the information, I have watched since E9 and I think this is the first time I have heard about broken blood feathers😪 Is this a common thing and if rescuers had gone to E14 yesterday would he/she have had a chance?
@@lindamessmer4257 if it was just the blood feather then most likely yes. Once you have a hold of the bird and find the broken feather you just take tweezers and pull it lime you would a splinter. The quick stop, flour or cornstarch is just to encourage the clotting while the hole in the skin closes. You usually watch them for about an hour after a pull. If it's not removed it just keeps the hole open to the blood supply that was feeding the feather. Hence why it is said it acts like a straw.
Vicki, the absence of your reassuring voice lends additional sadness to the events on the video. I do thank CROW and the company supplying the bucket truck for handling this expeditiously, with minimal disturbance to Harriet and M15. Bless all of you and, Vicki, I thank you for this video.
Yes, Vicki's missing voice said a thousand words. So devastatingly sad. I just imagine it would have been hard for her to speak.
My heart is completely shattered. E14 kept me going when i was at my lowest and when she needed help the most i couldnt do enough to get her that help. I will never forget you E14. I will always love you with all my heart.
Mary Cebzanov, once the active bleed was noted, Pritchetts and CROW took action. Everything that we could possibly do was done. I am posting a timeline of events and CROW's statement to help you and others see we tried to save E14.
Here is a timeline of Events 1-14-20:
A very small spot of blood was noticed on E14’s leg around 3pm. It couldn’t be determined if it was an injury or from a food source.E14 remained sleeping at the rails until 5:20pm when fresh blood was noticed on the eaglet. At that time the Pritchetts contacted the proper authorities and CROW was notified of the situation. There are legal issues involved in removing an eaglet from the wild. Sunset at the nest was 5:56pm.
The following is a statement from CROW: "As soon as CROW staff became aware of the situation, efforts to coordinate a rescue began. This process includes obtaining permission from federal and state wildlife officials prior to intervening in an active nest. Entering an active nest at night poses a safety risk to both the adult eagles who could become agitated by human presence and seriously injure themselves during the rescue process, as well as the safety risk to the personnel attempting the rescue. Realistically, a rescue attempt was not possible until this morning at which time we were notified the eaglet had passed away overnight." CROW then came and removed E14 and the unhatched egg from the nest and took both to their facility for initial examination.
Mary.. I was following nest in California last yr, with 2 eaglets. Bad cold weather as nest up in Mountain area. Long story short, one of the Eaglets died on Memorial Day ,2019. I was so upset, was overcome with how much the death effected me. Could not watch any of the 3 eaglet nest sites I watch for weeks after that. But .... Remember: This is hard now. But as you continue on to watch other birds weeks from now, you WILL start to find joy again. I have watched a camera set up on the upper Mississippi fly way. Saw hundreds of eagles that live there. To see all the birds that are surviving gladdened my heart after seeing first eaglet I ever witnessed dying on live camera. Things will be better. My heart goes out to you, as I went thru it. 🙂. After the shock yesterday of seeing E14 injured, I kept watching and praying through the night for the bleeding to stop. But, I had you on my mind, Vicki, wondering how you were. You're an important part of this eagle family circle. Thank you for filming the rescue today. Your silence said plainly, there are no words. My condolences to you, the Pritchett family, all the camera people, the SWFEC viewer community and TH-camrs, specifically Lady. Hawk.
A black day :( I was up until 4 am London time watching the nest, and it was the first thing I did this morning. I too shed tears of sadness but my heart went out to you, Vicki. I repeat the comment I made elsewhere: if eagles could belong to anybody, this family would certainly belong to you. Let's hope to see Harriet and M15 again in a few months, to keep us glued to the live stream once again, and, of course, to hear many more of your commentaries!
Vickie, thank you for this video. I’m glad CROW removed E14 from the nest so that nature wouldn’t have to. My heart breaks for H and M and for the rest of us that came to love that little one so much. Our hearts will heal but it sure hurts right now. I’ve cried all day. Bless you dear Vickie💖

So sorry Vicky. Broke my heart to learn of this news. Cried at work, trying ro hide it. I try to remember that this is more painfull for us than it is to H&M but it's still hard. @@mollymaggie2 I also watch B.B. as well as several other nests, including the Decorah and NE FL Nests. Jackie (BB) and Gabrielle (NE FL) currently have eggs, and are incubating. These nests have helped me cope through the grieving process with this tragedy. I'm sure it helps u as well. ❤

Dear Vicki. I felt your pain through your silence while filming. My thoughts and prayers are with you! It was hard to watch Harriet and M15. I felt Harriet was looking for E14 when she dropped back down to the nest. So heartbreaking! Some have said the eagles have no emotion, but I looked at her face and a mom can just emit the pain through their eyes. God Bless you little one! Juanita Moreno, I believe Harriet and M15 knew something was wrong and also that E14 passed during the night. Harriet sheltered E14 all night. Eagles are amazing and teach us more each day.
Such a feisty funny and very aware eaglet! Helping rearrange sticks and pecking at its Dad's pantaloons. Little thing had spunk! I also used to look at nest last thing before heading to bed catching up on what had been on the day's menu. Heartbreaking.

Dearest Vicki - you are the reason I started watching M & Harriet in the late summer as your video popped up in my TH-cam. I fell in love! Hearing your narrative about them as you taped melted my heart - I could feel the love you had😍 nd with you having nothing to say on this video makes it apparent how heartbroken you must be. I know all of us eagle lovers are as well. Speaking for myself I have cried over this so much today. I will never forget this little precious one. I found out the morning after of little E14's passing. It is one of the most heartbreaking things to see and what really tugged at me watching the video is the cries of mom once she got back to the nest after CROW left. For all the little ones we lose, so many more make it, we just don't see all of them. We got the chance to see little E14 grow and develop right before our eyes. Precious memories of a very precious little one. Fly high and free little E14--you will not be forgotten. ❤🦅❤
Nancy Valente, actually the vocals from Harriet were warning vocals as a 3-4 year old sub adult was circling above the nest tree at that time. Their calls can mean so many things and we continue to learn.

Thank you @riebug. Looking at the new larger feathers coming in, I did think of a broken blood feather (7 parrots). Would Harriet have know about a blood feather. She was trying to help E14. She knew something was wrong early on and kept inspecting it. I feel so badly for all who loved this firecracker known as E14 including Harriet and M15.

NikkiPog4444, Harriet may have sensed something as we saw her allopreening E14 and she very well could have been trying to pull the feather out but E14 kept moving away from her.

Just read preliminary veterinary report posted on NE BE website saying a broken blood feather
on its left side, left side was heavily covered in blood. No other trauma was found that would have caused death. Now looking into the toxicology end of things.
Andrea Sommer, I am glad you read what they wrote. But to get the complete facts, it is always good to go to our live cam website and the chat and also CROW's statements as they were the ones who retrieved the eaglet and egg and did the examination.
I want to thank CROW for doing that very kind job. I know that when the little baby of Jackie and Shadow died, { a pair in Big Bear} and his little body just sat in the nest it was so, so sad to watch every time you watched a video. For a little while I could not watch. I am sorry for Harriet and M15, I don't know what they feel, I guess they feel a loss just like we would, but God has His hand on them and they will go on and have healthy babies. I am sorry for you Vickie because you put so much love and time into them. I have cried like everyone else..I feel like I have lost a loved one. God is in control and as someone else said...She had to go home because the Lord of all missed her.. Blessingsxx
Vicky, I admire your courage to make this dignified video, suspecting that the absence of your narration might be because you couldn't trust yourself to speak. My heart hurts, but I am thankful to the Pritchett Family for maintaining this site, to our wonderful cam ops and mods, and especially to you for being able to be a part of the eagles' lives. Our hopes and dreams remain alive for a better year next season. Broken hearts do mend, but it takes time.

Vicki this broke my heart! I have cried at home and at work! Watch Harriet and M15 back at the nest was just cut wrenching seeing Harriet looking for her baby. Thank you for all you do and thank you CROW.
Losing E14 is heartbreaking but than to see M15 flying around the nest when crow was there and listening to him cry was so sad..then he returns to the nest with harriet and their baby is gone...feel so bad for them..rip little one we love you ♥️
This was such an unexpected tragic event for everyone who follows this nest. I couldn't believe how much this affected me. When I saw Harriet's eyes that morning I saw pain and loss and I broke down. I could handle the 2nd egg not hatching, but the empty nest was too much. I won't stop watching these beautiful birds, this incident made me feel that much closer to them. All God's creatures are made with love and we see that reflected in all animals. RIP E14.

Dear Miss Vickie. I cried the entire time I watched this. Cried and cried. The silence spoke volumes. As hard as it is to watch, it helps by answering many questions that folks like I had. After hearing of E14's death, my next thought was of you Miss Vickie and I prayed you were ok. My third thought was of all the classroom children and children viewing from home. Thank you guys for taking care of our beloved eagle family. We can take comfort in knowing that there’ll hopefully be an answer as to what happened, and that E14 is flying high now. Also we can take comfort that H&M’s bond appears to be as strong as ever and they can see each other thru this tragedy. RIP E14
First time I have seen H and M stay do close when CROW wad at the nest and to immediately return looking intently for their little ones. So sad.
Yes, it was good to know what happened to the baby, but I also feel so bad for H & M to have their babies whisked away so suddenly. They didn't have time to mourn or spend extra time with their babies. So sad. Hopefully they can restart next season. Great couple

Thanks very much for letting us see this! It’s so very sad, but it helps trying to get over it.....I‘m so devastated.....!! I feel for H&M and hope, they will be coping with it better than we humans seem to be.....RIP my beloved little eaglet!! Fly high and take care of H&M, as you are an angel now.....🦅♥️

Yeah, big baby me cried a bucket full of tears over the passing of E14 and for M & H. How sad. I have been so excited whatching a new baby growing and learning.
Very sad. I watched it on 1/13 and missed it on 1/14 and today it's gone. You can not take life for granted.
