    Doug, the day the warranty expires, sell it back to CarMax. Depending on how much they offer, and taking into account the value of the warranty repairs, you might even come out ahead!

      They would buy it back..i work for carmax, His range rover wouldn't end up on the front lot. it would be auctioned off at the auctions carmax holds for other dealers to buy their cars they don't find value in rebuilding or don't meet their requirements.

      Billy, also known as Da Man, is said to be totally devastated and could be grounded forever or until "your mother let's me sleep inside the house again....."

      Man....The design team at Range Rover/Jaguar are awesome, the cars are works of art from the outside. But you'd THINK by now that they'd train their mechanics & assembly lines to build/fix cars that last longer than 2-3 years lol. • @SaeedMNassar
      @SaeedMNassar 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      lilrabbit129 don't forget that not all cars are as unreliable as this Range Rover. They're notorious for their mechanical problems. For the most part you won't be needing their warranty not to mention the fact that you pay a lot more money for their cars when compared to other dealerships. Add the warranty with the extra costs and you pretty much have more than the repair costs for any reliable car.

    • @TheDarkOuter
      @TheDarkOuter 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not always. It's important to remember that they are one of the few used retailers with strict quality control so you aren't just paying for a sticker. The warranty can be expensive but your vehicle is covered for almost anything that goes wrong. There extended warranties are better then the warranties from any new retailer from what I've seen.

They have paid at least $15,000 in repairs, just two moths after i bought the car, I blew one of the turbos, they replaced both turbos, a $7000 job. that by itself has payed off for the warranty. CarMax warranty is the best, it's through CNA btw.

      This isn't the case with most of the cars they sell. But some cars like Range rovers, Mercedes, BMW, etc. are very high maintenance and they cost a lot to maintain. My BMW was actually for sale as a certified Pre owned at a BMW dealership 3 weeks before I bought it from CarMax, so they actually have good cars.

    • @1337machoman
      @1337machoman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      It's the brand, not the fact that it comes from Carmax. If you buy a run of the mill Toyota or Honda from Carmax you'll likely have a totally uneventful experience with the reliability - however many paranoid customers do opt for the warranty anyway which helps offset the insane claims made by German car buyers :P
      German cars are just inherently unreliable, especially when it comes to electronics. They're not made to last long beyond the warranty period.

    • @TheBuzzlin
      @TheBuzzlin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      thereapergrim Thats just pure fucking Bullshit. The 335i are all known for Turbo failured, 330i or 325i for example not. And after a certain amount of time some parts are worn out, but thats the case in all cars! You are just generalizing atleast 100+ models from different german Carmanufacturers to be unrealiable, yet I bet you never even owned one

    • @largol33t1
      @largol33t1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +TheBuzzlin, the way he gushes about Honda damages his credibility. My boss and my sister-in-law have strongly warned me to avoid Honda. They're fine at first. Then comes one small repair. About a year later, another thing breaks. It costs more. Then you start noticing problem after problem. The Accords and Civics are pure garbage. After 50,000 miles, the problems are just as numerous as the Range Rover. My boss heard I was shopping around for a car and told me firmly: "A word of advice, don't get Honda. They USED to be great but the brand is slowly going down the toilet."

      Nah man, be careful with yours, my dad's 2017 TD Discovery Sport has had some serious issues, I understand that it may have been a faulty unit,but the LR dealership never said anything about it being a faulty unit even after the repairs. Thank God it was under a 5 year warranty my dad spent only a grand on. Repairs: faulty fuel pumps and cooling system(at 8k miles), some spark plugs failed for some reason(at 15k miles), and then the car would start turning off it self and struggling to turn on, turns out a lot of the ignition electronics had a shortage(at 37k miles) after the dealership fixed it my dad just sold it and bought a GLC and it has been much more reliable, it now has 44k miles and he only had to change oil and brakes.
      Keep in mind, never the Land Rover guys told us what caused the issues, we only had access to the recipes of the new parts they'd put. The dealership really tried to mask their brands unreliability, we had to guess what the problems were. They spent over 12k on repairs and didn't tell us how serious they were, we thought that we could have the car in a day or two. Turns out the shortest time we had to wait for a repair were 12 days, and the longest two actual months. They gave us an evoque as a spare, however, it was a gasoline car, my dad's was a diesel, which meant he spent a lot on fuel he hadn't planned on spending, and had to be constantly on gas stations( the evoque has an awful fuel economy to its power). PLEASE NEVER BUY FROM JAGUAR, OR BRITISH CARS (
      except If you are rich and dont care about expenses).

    I own this piece of shit but I love it so much. I no longer take it anywhere to be fixed because I have fixed nearly everything to a point where I know all the parts and how to replace them in my driveway all alone with my tools. Rule number 1- Know junkyards in your neck of the woods and be a mechanic as soon as you buy one. Commercial mechanics are super thieves and should be avoided at all cost. With cold front blanketing East Coast, I didn't want to fix my last breakdown in my driveway so I took it to a supposed 'great shop' in my neighborhood to fix steering column! The parts and labor they quoted was $7700. Like a joint user, I said F it and drove it to a nearby LKQ junkyard and pulled the part myself and paid $31. Drove home and after 4 hours of jamming afrobeat while working on my rover, the machine was ready! I saved $7669.

      I own 4x4's myself but warranties cover normal wear and tear. Check any vehicle warranty it will have exclusions for things like improper vehicle maintenance, misuse, abuse or neglect, vandalism, fire, off-road use, racing, collision or impact. Warranty Claims are denied and invalided all the time for off-road ready vehicles. If they see mud packed in your wheel wells, rock dings and/or scratches on the under carriage, you might find yourself without a drivetrain warranty and a court battle to have it serviced under warranty. It's screwed but that's the way it is. Each manufacture is different on how strict they are.

LR/RR has gone through many different owners and they've always consistently stayed unreliable. From Ranger Rover Classics, to modern full sized behemoths.

    I took over a lease on a 2015 Mercedes C300. This is my list of replacements and repairs done all under warranty on that vehicle over the course of just this February, one month! Every week was a new trip to the dealer...
    Replacements:
    Front driver's side window (wind noise)
    Driver's seat headrest (broken adjustment)
    Driver's seat back pocket (broken by dealer)
    Left front axle shaft (strange noise)
    Right front axle shaft (strange noise)
    Left front upper control arm (strange noise)
    Repairs:
    Panoramic sunroof rattle (x2)
    In-dash rattle(x2 but has returned)
    trunk rattle (clip fell off inside trunk lid)
    So all in all, my first German car experience... Well, I love my car actually, it is truly a pleasure to drive, but damn would it be expensive to own out of warranty.

    I'm seriously thinking I might buy a car from carmax for the warranty. How does it work, you take it to any dealership to get it fixed and CM takes care of the price?

    • @MattCuzns
      @MattCuzns 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Boss When you buy MaxCare (the plan Doug's got) you can choose your deductible. The minimum is $50, but CarMax will give you $50 off if you take it to them. So $0 at CarMax, $50 at a Land Rover dealership.

    • @enoch861
      @enoch861 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You take it anywhere you want it to get fixed and let them know you have a warranty taking care of it. The dealer/shop you're at takes care of the rest. When it's time to pick up you waltz in and pay your deductible and that's it. It's usually that simple unless you run into issues of them not wanting to cover something.

    Sounds almost play-by-play like my 2004 Mercury Monterey mini-van (Mercury badged Ford Freestar). I bought it when it was three years old, when the original 'owner' returned it at the completion of their 3-year lease. It had only about 20k miles on it. The dealer did a 'certified' checkup and repaired everything on the list, including putting on new tires, brakes, replacing a cracked center console section, hiring a firm to re-sew some upholstery that was damaged due to the previous owner's kids yanking on the pockets on the rear of the front seat. The dealer also provided a Car Facts report, which looked clean. I think I paid $13,000 for the van. The dealer offered a bumper-to-bumper aftermarket warranty policy for $1,300, which I took. Had never taken an extended warranty or anything of the like before, and considered them to be probably some kind of rip-off, or at least a risky crap shoot like playing the lottery.
    Within the first couple years I had it, the warranty had kicked in over $8000 in repairs for things like the tri-zone air conditioning having all three loops' metal piping rotting out, power locks failing, power windows failing, steering issues, brake master cylinder failing, some sort of electronic engine control module failing, two wheel bearings failing, etc. Ten a year later the engine suddenly lost power in the interstate highway in the middle of a snow storm. I was able to limp the van to the nearest deal, which was closed, and take a taxi home. Turned out something in the ignition had fried, and it was necessary to replace almost everything in that system, including all of the individual ignition coils, which required dropping the engine to get at the rear ones. That repair was over $2000. So the warranty had kicked in something over $10,000 so far.
    Just before that warranty ran out, the brakes had another expensive issue, the transmission had an expensive repair, there was another electrical issue, and a couple other things I forgot about now. All paid by that warranty.
    After the warranty ran out, the van has luckily been pretty reasonable in terms of reliability. I replaced the tires because the ones the dealer had put on when I bought it were hard riding and noisy on the highway....the Michelins I put on have been great. Ford sent me a safety recall due to fears that corrosion would compromise the rear seat's attachment to the body, and the dealer had the van for a full week to implement the 'kit' provided by Ford to remedy this issue, but that was Ford paying for the repair and not the warranty folks (they also paid for a five day rental of another mini-van). About the only other stuff that has gone wrong since then is the rear brakes have caliper issues; they keep failing to retract fully and the brakes drag very slightly, resulting in two instances where I had to pay for replacement of rear rotors and pads and calipers.
    Contrast that with my 2003 Honda Accord which I drove over 200k miles in 10 years, and the 2013 Accord I bought to replace it, 70k on that so far. Did not buy an extended warranty on either, neither of them cost me more than oil changes, filters, tires, and very rare brake repairs when those wore out. Never any issues I noted that would cause me to see a mechanic or the dealer. Both cars had a couple recalls each, always for some fairly minor things that had apparently happened to others but not to mine, e.g. replacement of a wiper motor because some owners had experienced internal motor corrosion that could cause the wipers to fail when most needed.
    I still drive that Mercury mini-van, since I use it as a sort of enclosed cargo vehicle and on occasion when i want to haul visitors around to see the sights.

      Johan Sidén Most of it is faulty designs. Automakers make more money on parts by forcing model-year specific parts on cars (even though some newer model years have better part designs) at dealers that they know will fail again... it's a cycle.

    Who currently owns Range Rover ?? Drove a petrol sport once and wasn’t particularly impressed with the somewhat standard but wielding cumbersome handling . High seated position was advantageous but seemed to give a feel of unease like a pendulum effect.
    Reliability was never the ultimate forte of a Range Rover but listening to Doug his experience is plain diabolical. Car max honouring their warranty as any reputable company would is worthy of a award for perseverance. I’m not about to say Doug celebrity status might have an influence as this after the numerous claims would’ve surely been exasperated. Lesson here people if you don’t have a Range steer clear and avoid the possible addiction. Car max I take my hat off to you because many a warranty firms would have thrown the towel in and left their customers stranded rather than risk bankruptcy after all it is a business.

    This can break both ways.... either they're losing bags and bags of money on warranties like this and stop offering them (less likely as most cars people buy are far more reliable than a Range Rover so they come out ahead at the end of the day) OR they love the free advertising Doug's infamous Range Rover is giving them and are happy to keep fixing it!! I'll guess it's the second.
    And it works since with a warranty like that, I'm much more likely to go to Carmax for my next vehicle.

I don't have the numbers but I suspect the same longevity is true for Bentley and Aston martin. However they're among the least reliable vehicles you can buy with prohibitively expense parts. If you want to buy a dependable vehicle with reasonable maintenance and repair cost along with good resale value because of that, buy a Japanese vehicle. As always a well done and entertaining video but Car Max's warranty didn't pay you for your wasted time having all these repairs addressed.

      Land Rover is especially bad though, literally the worst. Why wouldn't you go with another brand anyway? The romantic British appeal of Land Rover died when all of the switchgear became Ford based, the brand prestige isn't there because they don't change much from year to year and almost everyone who has one bought it used for less than $40k, the iconic styling has given way to an ugly and needlessly complicated pedestrian safety blob that's only vaguely the same shape as a vintage Range Rover, the G Class, LX, and Patrol/QX80 are all better offroaders, and just about any luxury car has a better interior. Even a base model Buick Regal feels less cheap inside than a platicky loaded Range Rover, and has more useable tech. A 2018 Range Rover is a plasticky trashy poorly built ghettomobile, at this point a Chrysler 300 probably carries more brand prestige and has nicer interior plastics. Yes, the queen drives one, but hers is heavily modified, blacked out, lengthened, has had every interior service wrapped in real high quality leather, and actually looks good. Besides, the Swedish king drives a Volvo wagon, does that make Volvo comparable to Mercedes or Jaguar? Hell no, and the Toyotas driven by African dictators aren't seen as the height of class and luxury just because important people drive them either. Only obsequious tasteless fools hold the cars of the British monarchy to a different standard, if the car's crap it's crap no matter who owns one.

      getting married makes life cheaper if you and your spouse are working. buying a house is very good idea. in the long run it's cheaper than renting because once it's paid off all you have to pay for is utilities and property tax. after you retire and your income is reduced substantially you'll be glad you bought a house.

      Wrong. Every house payment you make is like putting money in the bank. Your gonna get it back and some at sale time. Renting is flushing cash down the toilet.

    Word of advice to Doug: literally sell the Range Rover to your worst enemy, claim you're calling a truce. Then grab some popcorn, a drink and watch the show!

    One of my friends who has always had higher end cars...had a 1999 Mercedes C280 Sport black on black back in 2001...He did buy the extra Mercedes Starmark warranty..they paid out over the course of the warranty over $19K on repairs! He loved to get the loaner cars though...He had a Range Rover given as a gift from a client once...(nice clients)..he sold it as the warranty was up!! He knew what a money pit they were..Every car even the 2012 BMW he bought in 2014 he bought the extended warranty..I said I don't think you will get any use from the BMW warranty as they are good cars..WRONG!! It's been in the shop many times as well!! Thanks to Doug's video I can confirm that Range Rover is a unreliable auto!!!

      Every dealer makes their bank in service. Not selling cars

    Doug , your the greatest ...my wife says , I wanna trade my Benz for a Range Rover. So I Meet this guy who is literally is trying to give it to me , and he says I’ll trade tomorrow. I’m thinking in my head , wow I’m going to be getting a great suv. But as always, I pray about things first, and got on TH-cam and first video that comes up is yours. So after this , I won’t even look at the rover , unless Its given to me. Lol - Thanks bud
