You guys do know it’s one of the only cars to date that’s still hand made in the original factory in gratz Austria . Not to mention it’s all steel . I’d say engine is 40% the Mercedes badge 10% the body 50% .

I believe the “door gap” was intended as a safety in case the door was bent/damage, etc. off road. Having a tight gap could cause the door to jam if it was bent around the door seal or if the hinge was displaced.
The newer g wagons weren't even meant to go offroad. That would make them less luxurious

As a previous owner of a G Wagen (G300 LWB) I absolutely loved it. The fact it looks retro is the whole point.

The screws and hinges, panel gap, and rear door are intentional. The g-wagon is designed to make rich snobs feel rugged. I believe the lead designer literally said that in an interview. This is what rich people use to tow there boats.

I wouldnt pay 50k for this. But if thet improved the steering, and put an actually reasonable motor in it i would pay 50k for it. I mean even a v10 would make more sense.
If they slanted the windows by like 5 degrees, moved the spare inside, added some actually useful off roading options as standard. Made the back door automatic just to give doug a boner, threw in a hemi v8 and kept the turbos, and improved some of the interior features then it would make some sense.

I actually love a lot of things about this car. For example you say the rear tailgate is not powered and doesn't open automatically, but i much prefer this mechanical door action as it is way less likely to fail, and cheap to replace

Modern struts do not fail at all. Even the struts on my 1992 Mercedes have lasted perfectly fine after decades. If you're worried about cheap maintenance then you shouldn't be buying a v12 lol.

benda - Good aerodynamics aren't necessarily just for 'racing' purposes. Fuel economy reduction, reducing drag and wind noise, minimizing noise emission, and preventing undesired lift forces and other causes of aerodynamic instability at high speeds are all factors to consider.

I mean, you can't argue about taste, but I honestly think that Doug is just a bit to factual, to nit picky when it comes to cars. Things many car guys find great, are stupid for Doug, and things nobody gives a flying fuck about are interesting for Doug. Another example, who on earth cares about cupholders in super cars? I don't even know what he would say about a Lancia Delta Integrale, or a old Alfo Romeo Giulia 1300...both are honestly, badly made cars, but every single car guy I know would kill to own or at least drive one of those :/
Mercedes makes a 40 year old car, and sells it as luxury, everyone is fine with it. Lada makes a 40 year old offroad capable 4x4 and sells it new for under 10k, and everyone laughs their asses off.
I love Mercedes but if I could buy a Lads Niva where I live I would totally do it just for giggles and shit. :D

I've owned 3 Mercedes, and never understood the appeal of the G-Wagon. It's more like Balenciaga sneakers, inflated prices, but not as good as a pair of Nikes for a quarter the price. It's bought for clout, not by people who actually like driving.
Go drive a G wagon then talk its an offroader you can also track and you cannot complain about the interior without hating every other Mercedes SUV interior as the G wagon has a nicer interior but is similar to cars like the ML

Wow. I've always thought the G-Class was kind of pointless and outdated, but Doug tore into this thing. I've never actually seen him angry before when driving. Wow!
MrWoodii If it sells so well then its not pointless. Period. Don't fix what isn't broken. So its not outdated. Its a simple clean timeless boxy design. Doug doesn't get it. He makes valid criticisms but fails to realize that its these same very criticms that make it a success. Its crazy. Its stupid. Its pointless. Its ridiculous. And its supposed to be like that. Its because it makes no sense that it makes perfect sense!
Of course to you and me its outrageously overpriced. But if you really think about it. The people who buy these cars sleep on millions so to them this is pocket change. To them its an investment... The g wagons keep their value very well..... They have a lot of road presence... Since their really is no veichle out there on this same level that exists on the road. And if you go for the 4x4 or 6x6 then you also get incredible off road capabilities.
So he is right to be angry... J also wouldn't buy this even if I had all the money in the world. But he is overreacting as he fails to understand that its the same reasons he hates it that people like it... And why a market for these viechles exists at all... And why it sells like hot cakes.
