I can't imagine Alan Parsons Project without Ian Bairnson. He playes the solos with his heart. One of the best guitar player of the world...Great musician.
Alan Parsons has toured a lot in the 2000s with a lot of guitarists I can't name. So glad I got to see the original band on their 95 US tour. Of course, the highlight was Ian playing his solos.
So sad to hear that Ian passed away last month. His beautiful, flowing, melodic solos on Alan Parsons' albums will forever be embedded in my consciousness. God bless Ian, you've been old and wise for many decades and your work is testament to that wisdom.
I was privileged to meet Ian on a one to one meet up arranged by my colleague and friend Howard Williamson. He was a real gent and gave Howard and I a personal show of his mastery of the guitar. So unassuming and willing to give his take on my Fender Strat by playing and giving his critique on minor improvements which could be made. He always could relax at Howards as they had known each other since before Pilot days. It was a great day for me. Thank you Ian and you will be sadly missed
Ian Bairnson playing another full on SWAG guitar solo - like he does on Wouldn't want to be like you and Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights outro - pure talent from Mr. MELODIC himself. He moves us from the inside out - heart soul genius.
I have a funny story about Ian. The APP was playing at a medium sized club in my area, and I went to see them, having been a fan ever since the first album. I had, in my mind's eye, a picture of Ian… a very proper British gent, a bit gray, with a beard. A bit like Martin Barre. So when the band came out and the guitarist looked nothing like the "Ian in my mind", I was disappointed. I figured he wasn't touring with them. And then they began to play and I realized that nobody else could sound like this except Ian. I got as close as I could, stood there watching him the entire show.
BesidesAlan Parsons, he has also worked with: Hudson-Ford, Paul McCartney & Wings,Steve Harley, Kate Bush,Chris De Burgh,Jon Anderson, Bucks Fizz, Elaine Paige, Paris, Mick Fleetwood,Bananarama, Esther Ofarim,Prelude,Keats, Kenny Rogers,David Sylvian, Tom Jones, David Paton, Tam White, Marian Gold, Stefano Pieroni, Beverley Craven, Jim Diamond, Marajan, Takafumi Ishida, Mary Mac, Jargon, Manolo Garcia, Alfonso XII, Carola, and Liverpool Express.
Correct and it takes many years and many solos to arrive at that simple truth. Just like a bottle of wine takes many years in a cellar. "Slow" solos are a sign of maturity.
Um,I know Ian a little bit via fan contact and he is a very genuine player and person/ great guy. His roots are in a blues style of playing. With this being said,I hope I'm not talking out of place on it but,What is the magic of playing note for note the original version always? To me, it might even get boring and a bit predictable to just go there. So,I like the surprises he did and he still maintains the feel and the basic melodic intregrity of the original. Yes,he did it. Original!
@ archerooo YES!!! Frank zappa wouldt have spent his two legs to play such nice melodies with such a "leight" feeling! I couldt listen to him 24 hours a day. Try that with Holdsworth!
I don't know what's so hard about playing the fucking original notes of the solo; unless he didn't do it. C'mon!!!! It's what made them rich to begin with.
RIP Ian Bairnson! Thanks for the beautiful guitar solos!!!
RIP Ian Bairnson, an unsung guitar hero.

One of a true underrated guitar hero on his own. Simple, full, passionate, humble.
May he rest in peace.

Sadly passed away , brilliant guitarist from Shetland also played the solo on Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush

One of my favorite guitarists, and a huge influence. Thumbs way up.
Gone too soon. So long, Ian.
I am a drummer but I recognize a class guitarist . His solo on Wuthering Heights is magical.

A CLASSIC solo from an AWESOME guitar player
It's all about the feel man and Ian FEELS it. Epic
Ian had a unique style that added so much to APP. I always knew when he was playing a solo.
Ian Bairnson sempre fantástico combinando técnica refinada e harmonias inteligentes. Sem dúvida, um dos melhores guitarristas de todos os tempos.

Ian's one of the few guitarists, along with David Gilmour, who can make you burst into tears: such amazing playing.

Great to see the master in action! Anybody else got any clips of Ian playing live?

Choice of notes is so important for this kind of music. For most music

Some guitarists are good. Some are great. But Ian and Gilmour can literally make you burst into tears.
Ian Bairnson = Mr. Smooth
Awesome
Brilliance in the midst of pap.
Ians My cousin..
Lucky me!!!!

You guitar guys that wanna 16 notes per bar, listen to this first. Thats a smooth guitar solo, note perfect, you hear any better than this.
Ian bairnson musical maestro gone too soon
Is that John Miles?
Great player, but the solo is so iconic I wish he'd played it note-for-note.
Don't forget that he wrote that iconic solo.
which performance is this?
Does he still use a 2p coin as a pick?
Lucky!!
Jerry Lee Lewis is my cousin
Guitar / Sax there is not a better musician around
I don't know what's so hard about playing the fucking original notes of the solo; unless he didn't do it. C'mon!!!! It's what made them rich to begin with.
Why?
He wrote the freaking solo and yours is just an opinion
