    Magic was much more himself on our ride this morning and the great news is that the lucky boy is getting a brand new saddle! Hopefully he will be a bit more comfortable from now on! The lesson in this video was a frustrating ride, but a good learning experience and a solid reminder that it’s ok to not get everything right all of the time! 😃❤️

    QOTD: Just being able to enjoy riding them, and (even though i jump pretty small compared to most people), I am proud to say that i can do, but often don't believe so. I am extremely lucky to even be able to ride at a stables, and i feel like sometimes people who own horses, don't appreciate them as much.
    I love your videos so much, and enjoy every moment of them! It's nice to see a realistic version of a lesson, because a lot of channels just show the "best" bits! ❤ 🐎

    From the video it looks like Magic gets really excited about jumping, especially if the jumps are big. Am I right in assuming he rushes at the fence gets right to the bottom of it and then leaps? If so that is incredibly scary and frustrating. Last jump definitely the best one but he looks incredibly powerful and you are a slight woman so not a hope of controlling him in where he goes or when he jumps etc. Hunting can blow some horses minds. It can take a long time to get over a horse falling down with you, and to be honest you will never truly be able to put it from your mind if you have to turn sharply, I had 2 such incidents and both stayed with me for years, in fact, at the beginning of having lessons again I wouldn't even canter fully around the arena and it took several weeks for me to get over that.

    • @PonyCam
      @PonyCam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      He has until fairly recently been pretty good at taking off from the right spot (a summer out in the big grass jumping paddock has helped a lot with that), but recently with his strange slippy turns into the fences it's been taking out all of our impulsion and striding meaning we have been getting in quite deep, which makes us both lose a bit of confidence for the next fence. I'm hoping once his new saddle arrives he'll feel more comfortable round the corners as his saddle stays where it should and we can get back to where we were with our jumping a couple of months ago, where he was really starting to listen on the approach more and use himself well over fences (like in the last jump in this video). Hopefully we'll also get back to doing some more flatwork soon too, as it really doesn't take much for Magic to improve his way of going with a bit of gentle flat schooling! And you're quite right, as for my own confidence with cornering it's just something that will (hopefully) come back with time.

    • @emmapaaa
      @emmapaaa 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds weird to me that your instructor is asking you to kick the horse (multiple times) and shoutin ”GO” ”KICK” even though the horse looked ”too” excited about the fences. Wouldn’t it be better to calm the horse down and make him listen you better, as you did before in this video? Some of the jumps looked dangerous and the horse jumped too close/too far

    • @PonyCam
      @PonyCam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      emmapaaa The instructor is shouting “kick!” into the fences because I was starting to really hold the horse back, causing us to get too close and chip in. She doesn’t actually mean for me to ‘kick’ or ‘boot’ the horse so to speak, she’s just encouraging me to take off the handbrake so that we can get a better quality canter with more impulsion, allowing for a more fluid jump, which I was stopping from happening. In between jumps we always have a chat about what needs to change for the next one, and we’ll discuss in detail how I need to adjust my riding to improve the horse’s way of going (I understand this might not be clear from the videos) - yelling ‘kick’ is just a shortening of all that technical discussion when there’s no time to have a conversation right before a fence - we both know what she really means :-) Unfortunately I’m not sure what you mean by ‘dangerous’, certainly from my perspective there was nothing dangerous about these jumps or how the horse was jumping them, just a few bad strides (rider error) and some easily knocked down poles.

    all my other horses are western or trail ponies ( American quarter horses, thats just what i call all horses lol ) that had training to walk trot canter that i built up into jumping and taught them to enjoy their new "jobs" since i choose what they do for that day.

    Hi do you have advise for a pony that likes to do an extra stride before a jump and if you try not give him the stride he will turn rite before a jump

    • @kadovax6567
      @kadovax6567 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      He does an extra stride because he feels he needs it. So he will refuse to jump if he cannot do the extra stride. It could have 2 reasons : your hands are too strong on him so he comes as close as possible to the fence to jump with his neck less extended, or he's not fast enough, and he needs the extra stride to cover the jump. He can be lazy. So you need to make sure your hands are more open, and/or you need to push him to get him to do longer strides so he will jump smoothly in the flow. The jumps will be easier for you and for him.

    If you lived stateside in New England, I'd be asking if Magic's owner had ever had him tested for Lyme Disease. His resistance to bend reminds me of a pony I rode (and totally adored) who had bending issues and just seemed to have more "off" days than he should have. He tested positive for Lyme -- a man-made tick borne illness that's becoming somewhat common from Pennsylvania to Maine -- and he was taken out of lessons for treatment.
    For his handful of issues, Magic is still an awesome guy. It could be his saddle, but we all have our "off" days. Maybe he'd enjoy an equine massage or acupuncture to help with his sticky bending?
    Good job staying with him. Often times things that we are major in the moment really aren't that bad at all. Magic forgives any mistakes you made -- so you just have to forgive yourself :)

    • @PonyCam
      @PonyCam  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bander Snatch To be honest when he is ‘bad’ it’s usually because I’m not asking him to do the exercise properly (resisting the turn with my body for fear of him falling in/slipping, rather than leading with my body and allowing him to bend around my leg). In turn this makes me frustrated because he ‘won’t turn properly’ and we have trouble cornering into jumps, when in fact it’s me who’s created the issue in the first place!!
      He does struggle to bend sometimes on colder days, but has improved in his overall flexibility leaps and bounds since he first arrive from a hunting yard last winter, though I dare say a nice massage and some post-ride stretching would benefit him.
      He usually does a pretty good job at whatever he’s asked as long as the rider is actually riding him correctly and I really feel the difference in lessons where I actually have my head screwed on!! :-)

    • @bandersnatch2874
      @bandersnatch2874 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PonyCam Don't be too hard on yourself 😊 You ride quite well, and have more nerve than me. I get the cold sweats just looking at a cross rail. It's hard to think about everything at once -- bending, leads, striding, breathing -- especially when the fences come up so fast.
      Magic is a great boy. He looks honest and willing and seems to enjoy jumping alot. You're good to all the horses you ride and are mindful of their feelings. Keep up the good work -- I love watching you ride 😀

    Only bad part was that we have this mare who has a injured leg and one of our helpers were riding her and she spooked while eating the grass and reared up and since she couldn’t support herself because of her injured leg she took a couple of steps back before falling..
    The pony I was riding spooked.. and her big thump when she landed
