Its refreshing to have less of the block by block building and an actual detailed explanation as to how it works and the mechanics of how it actually works.

To see how far we've come and how much there is to learn inspires me to try and use this sort of redstone to make a much more compact redstone computer. i don't think i'll be able to, but you give me hope. thank you

    This is really cool!
    It's a shame that it's not completely silent, and it does feel like it would be laggier than normal multi-item sorters, plus it's a lot larger. But it's still such a fascinating contraption, and the concept is genius.
    I built two multi-item sorters before, Maizuma Game's and Rapscallions. Maizuma's was slow when sorting a little bit of a lot of items, and Rapscallions was very fragile (At least when I was using it on a server), I had to be very careful about chunk loading, and even had to slow the intake of items because it would clog up (I asked the server admins about it and they said that that the server was run on Paper, which handles hoppers slightly differently).

    you know, with an encoded item sorter, you could actually feed batches of items to smaller, simpler sorters such that this system works with INCREDIBLE speed for sorting individual items. my guess is (for practicality) eight item types per silo, and batches of five silos together forming a hallway of forty individual item silos

    This is the second time this week you've revolutionised item sorting!
    Also, this might be a bit of a stupid question, but wouldn't it be possible to tile the box splitters by 1 by having two rows of them facing each other? (something like Rapscallion's multi item sorter: th-cam.com/video/EZh6Npg_UIw/w-d-xo.html ) Unless those box splitters are directional, of course.

    • @cubicmetre
      @cubicmetre  3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      I did consider just having two rows of themhowever then you would need hopper spam the connect them to the dropper lines and they add a heap of bulk to the system. I'd much rather wait to see Data's 1wt solution.

    Wait, for multi item storage, as long as the items don't despawn you should be able to do a snaking pattern for multiple item sorters per line, and have each sorter lead into a hopper line which is connected to the chests. I understand that this is slow, clunky, and makes each chest line at least 2 blocks wide(might be ways around that last bit)

    • @cubicmetre
      @cubicmetre  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shulker boxes are "encoded" to a slice of the storage system every time it sorts a box. The encoding is some arbitrary number system which is dependent on the number of slices. Technically this system is Hexadecimal encoded because there are Hex + Deci = 6 + 10 = 16 slices. But if you had more slices the number system would technically be different.

    Tick warping for one hour isn't verifying that it works. Especially with gaussian random momentum. I had contraptions like that break after 100 hours of ingame time and more. Also I believe in your design where you show inter slice interactions there is a 2nd mistake with the shulker dispensers

      Obviously forgot to praise the whole video as usual. Good job cubic

    • @cubicmetre
      @cubicmetre  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've obviously stress tested these systems off camera for much longer time periods to verify that they work. Also you can never be certain that something is reliable. Only less and less uncertain of it's reliability the longer it runs for. Because the gaussian random momentum only ever has a +y component placing a block above the box makes the box breaking 100% reliable.

    Mojang could solve this heartache with a distributer or sorter block...it would also help with hopper lag.
    Each update includes more blocks but zero practical sorting or inventory upgrades to handle the growth of items and item types. (bundles and shulkers only add to the problem).

    • @cubicmetre
      @cubicmetre  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A one block solution would make most of storage tech redundant. Ideally Mojang would simply give us better tools to enable things that were not previously possible. Like for example it would be cool to have a feature that can pull items from a specific slot of a container somehow, as this would enable new kinds of item sorting which can check whether containers have only one item type, or new types of encoding by indexing container slots.

    Hey @cubicmetre
    quick question. Is there any necessity to have two filter items instead on one?
    I modified your awesome design to sacrifice speed for reduced complexity, like replacing the piston bolt with powered rails. However the minecart wasn't fast enough and always sucked up both items. That's when i realized i can also use only one filter item instead of two. This would create a hole when it gets sucked up, but the item can only go back to it's original spot anyways.
    In case you're interested what i also did.
    boxes will first go through a box merger, creating shulkers with only one item type before being sent to the multi sorter. Therefore i could get rid of the whole item sorting in the back and sending the boxes straight to unloaders, which makes it possible to make the whole thing 1 wide tileable.

    • @cubicmetre
      @cubicmetre  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, you need Boyenn's first item unloader which is 1wt and much more reliable.. His video for reference:
      th-cam.com/video/125LUiq2MBA/w-d-xo.html

    What is the mod or whatever it is used at 2:34 to view the inside if the chest? Bit late to comment in the video but gonna do it incase any1 is still here

      With Litematica schematic rendering enabled, I simply press I while looking at a container and it shows me the contents. However this only works fully in singleplayer. On servers it will only work with containers rendered in the schematic.

      @@cubicmetre thank you, I've been looking for a mod that will show the insides of containers I'm looking at but haven't managed to find one, this will do for now

    Hey cubic, fellow Australian here hoping you'll read this,
    I'm in the process of designing my own version of a multi item encoder for a larger binary encode storage system however I'm having trouble pulling only one item from a shulker box with a hopper minecart. I have experimented with different timings including the exact same set up used at the start of your video including multiple different orientations and locations however I am still only able to pull exactly 2 items. Do you have any advice?

      Are you using a piston bolt or a powered rail? Hoppercarts pull an item every gametick so you need to move them a block every gametick or they will pull multiple items from each inventory. A powered rail moves the cart at 0.4 blocks per tick and so the cart will sit on each block for roughly 2 ticks pulling 2 items. So what you need to do is use a piston bolt to move the cart 1 block per tick.

      Hey@@cubicmetre,
      Thank you for your response,
      I actually am using a piston bolt however this shouldn't matter as I am referring to the system you showcase at 3:37 in which the hopper minecart is stationary. I'm using the exact same timing as you're system in the exact same orientation yet the hopper minecart always pulls two items instead of one.
      On a less important topic, whereabouts in Australia are you from.

    So many big words 😵 I love multi sorters tho. Something about then being compact.

    and with water streams...shouldn't you only need a single corner to align items to one side (the first wall they collide against)?
