Yesterday I sat for a couple of hours going through Pat Pattisson's Writing Better Lyrics, Worksheet chapter. I had in mind John Cleese's advice to wait 90 minutes, because that's how long it takes to get past resistance and "It's not my day". After 40 minutes I very nearly gave up. I was aimlessly writing rhymes and doing little stints of object writing for a song with a very open title, a melody and in-fact a pretty complete backing track.
By bed time I at least had the purpose of the song, I had lyrics to match the melody I had the rhyme scheme, the song-form and I have an absolutely overflowing cup of ideas for verses.
I've never been able to do that before without ruining a good backing track with some half garbled sentiment. I just have to consistently do this every day.

I watched an ABBA documentary where they showed how Björn and Benny went to a small hut with a piano and a guitar for 10-12 hours a day to write new songs. And we all know how well that went. But it seems that it was a lot of hard work.

Yes and they threw a load of stuff away.

I usually get inspired for at least one verse or one chorus...the rest is painstaking work.

Same here. I’ve hundreds of ‘songs’ like this. And all the work is still ahead - coming up with the bits to join on.

Wow that guy's room looks amazing. anyway...I find at times [ like right now'] I tend to distract myself from doing vocals by watching posts like this. Its a weird system but you seem to have to write all the mediochre tunes to get to the good ones. Inspiration is an amazing thing but You have to take it and run I find that i tend to always be waiting for a better day when i feel more in the pocket, but you have to record on the days you feel like an imposter to get to those good days, but all my favorite tunes i have, came to me in a flash. You never trust it.I always think I'll never write a tune as good as my last....

What I do to write is I just shut off my brain and don’t try to think of anything in particular and it ends up kinda going in it’s own direction, it’s kinda like a dream in terms of it pulls heavily on the subconscious

I'm not a musician. When I'm looking for an idea/inspiration, I find 'backing tracks' on TH-cam and try write melody and lyrics to them.

I produce my own beats and I still find it hard to lay over lyrics on them. Thanks for the tip!

@@depsoul1604 Great stuff. Hope you're enjoying making your own beats. I'm an old 'has-been' DJ who wanted to try something else and turned to songwriting (attempting). You'll find all sorts of backing tracks on you tube. Good luck with it.
