beauty i have an 03 liberty sport and have been trying to find decent quality overlanding starting points for my jeep your video has given me lots of insight
I have a 2005 liberty. I live in Illinois. I have Maintained it. Always fixed any mechanical or rust issues. I like what you did with yours. I have 259,000 miles and mine drives like new. I'm going to steal some of your ideas. I already have the upgraded roof mounts. I took the back seats out for more storage. I might do the tent and an awing. Thanks for the video
@@BackcountryRenegade thank you for the offer. I have 3 cross rails so really no need for the rack. I'm considering a tent but I have an elevated (only lightly) sleep platform inside. I take out all but the drivers seat to accommodate this. The height is level with the console. So I have plenty of storage too. I have custom screens that fit the windows also for ventilation with bug protection. So I'm considering a rooftop tent ⛺️ but may go with a rooftop storage box instead.
Really cool setup my friend. Those are great units unlike what car journalists have said. My wife and I had 2. Very durable little SUV and very capable off-road. Wouldn't have a problem owning one again.
Great build! Well thought out. The beauty of today is that there is so much out there to personalize your rig for your needs. Personally, other than getting off the ground in bear country, I don't see the fascination w roof top tents. It's like having a pickup w a slide in. Once you set up camp you can't use your vehicle. Also, it's hard to climb down in the middle of the night to pee. Watch that 1st step! Haha. I'm also in the process of a liberty build. I chose the liberty cuz it's small yet has 4 doors AND, I hate side by sides. Except for the real small side bys, it's about the same size as most and smaller than some AND, already has a hvac system and a windshield. As it is, it's amazing how capable it is. We use it as our hunting rig. Downside is the ground clearance in stock form. I'm collecting parts for an upgrade: ford 8.8 rear, dana 44 front, dodge 4.7L. Gonna keep the tire size limited to 33s.
Nice setup man. One thing to be mindful of is the roof load rating. The rating is based on the roof mounting and not the roof rack fitted. I have a 2011 Liberty with basically the same mount's as your's and has a measly 72kg load limit and Jeep told me it's based on the mounting. I have fitted a light weight soft top rtt as most hard tops are too heavy with my diy prinsu style roof rack which weigh's around 30kg. Cheers
yep found that out that hard way and already fixed the issue. If yout notice in my newer vids the new rack. Ill eventually do a vid explain all that needs to be done to keep a rack and rtt up, but the one in this vid, wont work the best.
I'm a fellow KJ owner and a fellow red raider! Love seeing all the upgrades you installed, and you got some good stuff on your KJ. I'm definitely grabbing one of those ham radio mounts and the crossbars and rails. I got the OME coil springs with Bilstein shocks which I'm installing next month. Wreck em!
Great build! Working on a project 2003 Liberty now. Would love to see more overland content on your channel. Keep an eye out, I'll have some coming soon as well as I begin my project! Great video, keep em' coming!
@@BackcountryRenegade I'm sure people would appreciate it! I've had my KJ since '09, got the OME/Bilstein lift, Dakota load levelers out back. I missed the opportunity to buy the ARB bumper years back when they were under $1k. Still kicking myself for that.
This thing is sick. Good work here. I reckon you've done lots of work getting it to where it is now! One thing to potentially add would be the clutch fan and shroud to keep the engine temperatures in check in case another "heat dome" comes and roasts us again next year. From what I hear overheating this engine is quite bad and the Liberty's that weren't equipped with the tow package have only got that tiny little fan up front. I'd say its a bit risky, especially since you are hauling around lots of extra gear. Anyhow, keep it up and please update us with how the future extra large tires fit.
3:48 Looks like that lift is taking a toll on your lower ball joint. I know you said you want 32s, I would look into finding 15s that clear the caliper and 265/70r15s. You can bring down that lift to 2 inches and save your suspension from being worn out. And gas too.
Kool video. IDK if you put the lowers on yet or not. My advice is to keep them the stock length. The liberty axle swings in a arc vs straight up and down. Centering the tire in the wheel well, will cause it to move towards the rear when stuffed.
Awesome walk around! I have a 03 Liberty with 2.5 lift and 30.5 in All Terrain tires. You have a great build. Check out some of the soft storage gear from Blue Ridge Overland. I’ve set mine up with they’re gear. He’s actually the reason I got into Overland because he’s in my home town in Virginia. He custom made a attic for my Liberty. Thanks for the walk around and the info and where you got your aftermarket parts not a lot of Liberty's out on the trail but it’s great gettin all the looks when your running the same trail as the Wranglers. Keep up the good work. Thanks
It is a spacer lift. Not the best lift but the most economical. I have a 2.5 inch Day Star lift. I did a lot of looking around before I bought it. I was leaning very heavy on the 3 in rough country but every one that had it on for a while complained about the springs settle real bad. You put the spacers right on top of the strings . Rear one are easy. The front a little more challenging. There is a plate that goes on top of the spring. I can’t remember exactly everything it took to get it on but we did tack weld the bolts that come with the plate and used a hydraulic press to get the spring apart to mount plate and spacer. Getting the springs back in did take a little team work to get it back in the a arms. If you have mechanical abilities and are comfortable it’s not bad to do. There is several videos of people putting this lift on. You will have to get it aligned up when your done. I did put longer brake lines by Jeeping By Al because I do flex it completely out and it was stretching them a little. The main reason why I went with the Daystar was I was reading a comment thread like this one and a guy was trashing the spacer lift telling people to go buy a Wrangler and get a real Jeep. A guy commented to him that he had a Wrangler on 35s and was all decked out for crawling. But he had a Liberty for his daily driver had his Daystar for five years and said if you did light wheeling or just wanted the Liberty to Have a better stance the Daystar had worked great for him. That sold me. I’ve had mine on About a year and a half. It’s worked great for me. We do a lot of gravel fire roads and moderate trails. On the trail it gets attention because it’s so different .
Awesome video, gives me lots of ideas. I'm curious about your wheels and tires. What size rims are you running? Did your backspacing have issues? Did you have to use any spacers? And what size tires are you running. I appreciate it!
Loving the roof top tent setup, i'm interested in installing one on my jeep liberty, could you link the rack, and anything else required to install the tent? Or add it too the description as i'm sure others are interested. I have no experience on what is required.

Thanks! I have not really looked into the seats. That may be something I upgrade down the road. Ive done a few more updates since this vid im going to to have to do another soon.
Didn’t see a fridge ? Maybe i missed it 🤷♀️ and i saw a little heater up in the tent , who makes that ? I also have a 06 liberty .. they are basically a first gen JK in a different smaller body, same trans and transfer case 81/4 rear ( same as a dana 44) and the 3.7 has about 20 more HP than the 3.8 . And towing and payload is higher on the liberty than the wrangler.. perfect jeep for me .. mine is the Max tow model it has the engine clutch fan with the normal fan also, and power steering cooler and trans cooler ..
The chrysler 8.25 refers to the ring gear diameter and comes w 29 spline axles if I remember right when I took my wife's liberty apart. It is a good rearend for a stocker. The dana 44 on the other hand, is in its 2nd generation now. The 1st gen has been upgrade throughout the years but, is characterized w an 8.5 diameter ring gear that translates to overall bigger parts like the spiders. Also, it comes w 30 sp axles. I know what you're thinking, 1 more sp is no biggie. The axle needs to be bigger to have 1 more spline. The 2nd gen if coming off the rear if a Rubicon has an 8.8 diameter ring gear and 32 spline axles which would make considerably stronger.
Nice. With all that-Did you eventually go with HD CV axles? Also throw in some onboard air and a converter. I know..im late. The aux fan is def needed with an HD tranny cooler. Looks badass!

Hello! Merry Christmas you might not reply because it’s an older video however if you do I was wondering if you can help me find that inside rack from all Js I’ve been dying to have one!
Merry Christmas. If you go to All Js and call them. They should be able to help you if they have more in stock they make an aluminum version and a steel version when I got mine. I know there was only one aluminum left. I’m sure it’s probably gone by now but they may have some steel ones left in stock. I know they were saying they were not gonna make anymore.
I deleted my sway bars in the rear, but I have adjustable rear lower control arms also from Iron Rock Off Road. The sway bar disconnects in the front are from jeepin by al, but he doesn’t make them any more
they were made by JBA, but they dont make them any more. I have a set from them of 2in extended beak lines, used for a month, but should work fine for up to a 3.5 in lift. i could sell them to you if your interested.
When you added the Mamba wheels and 265/70 R16 tires, did you already have the front number? I have a very similar setup without the steel bumper, and bought some nice used Moab wheels with 265/70 BFG tires… they rub really bad on the front so we will need to mod the stock bumper to make them work. Curious if you needed to go through that process and if so if you have advice?
I have a KJ with the 5 speed and was surprised to see one with the 6 speed bc I thought there duel mass flywheel was a big failure point and expensive to fix!
that rear tray is interesting, I would like something like that for mine. Since you are in WA as am I, if you want to get rid of it I would be interested. 🙂🙂
I got it at All J’s in Big Bear. If you call them and ask for the custom liberty rear tray they may still have some in stock. Mine is aluminum which I know they don’t make any more, but they may still have some steel ones. Here is their website www.alljproducts.com
@@madman432000 awesome. Let me know if you get one. Even if they don’t have the mounting brackets I would get it if they have one. It is easy to customize something to install it
@@BackcountryRenegade FYI they had 3 in stock so I got one, they had just enough mounting brackets. The ones they have are aluminum, no steel ones left.
with 31s it doesnt hit. However when i upgrade to 32s or 33s it likely will. I have a spare tire extension that I got from Rocky Road Outfitters that moves it away so the window can open freely.
Nice build# II have an '05 Renegade, set up very similar same bumper, Frankenlift, 31x10.50 Duratracs, JCR sliders, roof rack, etc... how are the front recovery points mounted?
@@BackcountryRenegade Thanks! I really like the front skid that used to be made/ sold by Jeepin' by Al, but waited too long to buy one. I've thought about making my own but didn't wanna cover my front tow hooks..
Your up in Washington state do you belong to any Jeep clubs up there? I live in Northern California. I have a 2006 Jeep Liberty too. I would love to build it up like yours.
its kinds of self built but from various ram mount pieces I researched and put together. Here is the tablet portion of it. I can look up the other pieces if your interested .... amzn.to/3rF4ZZp
I would do a straight axle front conversion. The front suspension on liberty is very questionable with bigger tires lift and weight. That's all that platform needs is a straight axle to be serious
Roughly what order did you mod things out? I want to go for a same style build from a stock liberty, but don't want to get ahead of myself and make mistakes in what order I go.
hello, good morning, excellent video, very good job and good project on your jeep liberty, I have a question. I have a 2007 jeep liberty. I put bigger 265/75R16 tires on it. I went to the beach and when I walked through the sand, the TRAMS TEMP light came on. but then the light went out, do you think there might be a problem with the transmission? Do you think it might break or is it something normal because of the force I exert, it only has 83,200 miles, I await your response and thank you
did you regear once you put the bigger tires? if not that is probaly why. the stock gearing with bigger tires will put extra strain on it. So would need to upgrade to 4.10s. thats why i plan to do before i go bigger tires
Yes I did. Side by side infact. Ikamper is wider and taller when closed on the car, which for my car already being smaller and narrow would stick out more. Plus the condor has more room when opened since the front floor does not narrow like the ikamper. I still like the ikamper but those things plus the money savings had me go condor. But quality wise the ikamper is a bit above, but comes at a premium. Both great tents though
Good vid and info. Just called Rocky Road Outfitters and asked them if they had the roof rails in stock and/or what the lead time was to ship a set to me. The told me 16 weeks! That’s 4 months! Fuck that! I’ll fab my own!!!
From jeepinbyal.com I don’t think he has them for sale any more. I have a extra set of jba extend break lines good for up to 2.5 in of lift I can sell if interested
@@BackcountryRenegade Unfortunately I'm doing the Rockfather lift by rocky road outfitters at 3". I did order the Iron Rock A arm though. Do you think 32" tires is a better fit on the Liberty, because I'm torn between 31s and 32s
@@CalebSTACHECarter they will work fine with 3 in lift. Plenty of room for it. I’d start 31s and make sure u have correct backspacing and trim. Then I can go up from there if u have room. Avoid wheel spacers and a spacer lift
I literally just picked it up about two hours ago lol and I am extremely inspired with the look you have. The plan is to add a winch bumper and the big tyres. But this is all new to me. Was wondering if you could guide me. P.s I’m from the UK
I got my front skid plates from Jeepin By Al before they discontinued them to focus only on A arms. The other plates came stock on the renegades, but they are not as beefy as the JBA ones. Check u pull it junk yards for some off renegades. Maybe get lucky and find some JBA ones. Skid row also makes some I hear.
The front portion of the lift is not made any more, but its the adjustable coilovers from Jeepin by al. Here are links for the rear extended length OME shocks : www.rocky-road.com/jeep-liberty-ome.html Rear Springs: www.rocky-road.com/jeep-liberty-coil-springs.html
I’m curious if you looked at the Old Man Emu 1.5” lift kit? I just got one for my 2005 Jeep Liberty Renegade and it says I can run up to 31” tires. Curious if you think I would get rubbing on 265/75 r16? And if I could go larger or if best to keep it less than 265s
If you were to get a KJ, these '05-'06 Renegades are the ones to get! These were the only years that had the stout Wrangler type hood. The other Renegade years and all other trim levels no matter what year, had that very feminine bug eyed hood, definitely not a man's Jeep! I had an '06 Renegade and my son and I had a lot of fun snow wheelin' with it upstate NY. Put 31" Duratracs on it and it handled a foot of snow with no problem. Of course, I aired down and had it in 4•Hi. 🌨❄🌬
I’ve it looking at installing an arb winch bumper and winch. But also wondering if there more of a need to save weight and try my damndest to get a half bumper built. What would you recommend?
it will depend on your suspension. If you have HD springs and coils like i have in mine, it will be able to handle the full bumper and winch. I suggest going with a synthetic line like i did will save weight that way. But the arb is a lot of steel, so a half bumper would save weight. I dont have those skills to build one so just bit the bullet for arb. If you have the skills id say go for it. some people also fashion wrangler bumper to their kj and make custom mounts for it.
@@BackcountryRenegade Yeah I’ve been trying to see about dimples here and there but it’s going to be on the outside and unless I can really seal the areas odd I’m thinking that route really won’t save much weight.. Thanks for the reply.

Nice Jeep . Kind of over the top , but very well done .
You did such a great work man. I was looking for this exact concept. Loves from Dubai.
This guy didn't do this he paid somebody come on he's from some affluent something about his neighborhood and it's squeaky clean Jeep funny kind of why did he just buy some really expensive kind of makes me want to throw up I'm going to hang out with some real guys and drink a beer and go catch me some snapper I ain't into this brokeback cowboy stuff
So when is that rooftop tent review coming?
Im going to try to get it done mid June. I have several trips planned where I will be able to film it.
Very nice!
Where did you get the adjustable rear sway bars and the front adjustable sway bar links
I deleted my sway bars in the rear, but I have adjustable rear lower control arms also from Iron Rock Off Road. The sway bar disconnects in the front are from jeepin by al, but he doesn’t make them any more
Where did you find the extended breake lines? I can't find them anywhere.
they were made by JBA, but they dont make them any more. I have a set from them of 2in extended beak lines, used for a month, but should work fine for up to a 3.5 in lift. i could sell them to you if your interested.
Ipad mounted in front of your passenger side airbag?
When you added the Mamba wheels and 265/70 R16 tires, did you already have the front number? I have a very similar setup without the steel bumper, and bought some nice used Moab wheels with 265/70 BFG tires… they rub really bad on the front so we will need to mod the stock bumper to make them work. Curious if you needed to go through that process and if so if you have advice?
i did already have the front bumper, i had to trim some of the plastic away in the wheel well other wise i would have had rubbing.
I have a KJ with the 5 speed and was surprised to see one with the 6 speed bc I thought there duel mass flywheel was a big failure point and expensive to fix!
i love my liberty but i love it cus its CHEAP and fun idk if i could spend this much on a liberty but cool build
that rear tray is interesting, I would like something like that for mine.
Here is their website
www.alljproducts.com
@@BackcountryRenegade I messaged them and got response that they may have a couple in stock but she will have to check for mounting brackets.
@@madman432000 very cool. The aluminum one is much better than the steel on because it saves you weight in the back. How much was it?
how do you stop the rear glass hitting the spare tyre ?
with 31s it doesnt hit. However when i upgrade to 32s or 33s it likely will. I have a spare tire extension that I got from Rocky Road Outfitters that moves it away so the window can open freely.
Love the rear rack in the cargo area. Can you post a link? I tried to search All J’s etc with no luck.
here is the site. it is not listed, you will have to call and ask for it. They were only making a limited amount. www.alljproducts.com/
Can you tell me about the fender flares are the stock? I can't find any that looks like yours
Thanks, these are stock fender flares that came with the renegade models
Nice build# II have an '05 Renegade, set up very similar same bumper, Frankenlift, 31x10.50 Duratracs, JCR sliders, roof rack, etc... how are the front recovery points mounted?
Thanks, the recovery pointes are drilled in the front and are reinforced with steel plated from behind and then bolted on.
@@BackcountryRenegade Thanks! I really like the front skid that used to be made/ sold by Jeepin' by Al, but waited too long to buy one. I've thought about making my own but didn't wanna cover my front tow hooks..
Do you know if I can fit grand Cherokee rims on the liberty?
Depends on the lug pattern, I was able to fit these Moab style TJ rims on mine
Your up in Washington state do you belong to any Jeep clubs up there? I live in Northern California. I have a 2006 Jeep Liberty too. I would love to build it up like yours.
thanks! glad it could inspire you. more vids to come on it. im not part of any jeep clubs yet, but i showed look into it
Awesome Build. Can you tell me what the part number is for the OME rear extended shocks? RRO do not list the part number.
Add the shocks to your cart, it will list the part numbers then
What shocks is this on? I have the skyjacker lift and seems too soft for off roading, great for street use
Guns up 👆
Where did you get your fender flares?
What roof rack bars u use for hold the rooftent?
Awesome video do you have a link for the tablet mount? Or brand?
its kinds of self built but from various ram mount pieces I researched and put together. Here is the tablet portion of it. I can look up the other pieces if your interested ....

I would do a straight axle front conversion.
The front suspension on liberty is very questionable with bigger tires lift and weight.
That's all that platform needs is a straight axle to be serious
That would be ideal but not really a option for me
To bad you didn’t do a video on the shelf install.
yeah bummer, wish i would have done that
@@BackcountryRenegade
So is it just the plastic holding it up?
@@Rad_B_OLand no bolted to the frame
Roughly what order did you mod things out? I want to go for a same style build from a stock liberty, but don't want to get ahead of myself and make mistakes in what order I go.
How many inches has your car been lifted?
hello, good morning, excellent video, very good job and good project on your jeep liberty, I have a question.
@@BackcountryRenegade ok thank you very much for your advice
I've got a 2005 Renegade 6 speed, your jeep is goals, love everything.
thanks! glad it can be some inspiration for you.
It’s more sleek than the iKamper? Did you compare to the iKamper?
Hi. Front bumper is for liberty??? O wrangler ???
It’s an ARB bumper got the Liberty, link in description
Good vid and info. Just called Rocky Road Outfitters and asked them if they had the roof rails in stock and/or what the lead time was to ship a set to me. The told me 16 weeks! That’s 4 months! Fuck that! I’ll fab my own!!!
Yeah if you can do it go for it. I do t have the skills for just bought them
Where did you find your extended brake lines?
@@BackcountryRenegade Yeah I'm definitely not doing spacer lifts or wheel spacers.
I'll message you on Instagram about the extended brake lines.
What’s your tyre size?
these are 31s (265-70r-16) i plan to go to 32s or 33s next
I literally just picked it up about two hours ago lol and I am extremely inspired with the look you have. The plan is to add a winch bumper and the big tyres. But this is all new to me. Was wondering if you could guide me. P.s I’m from the UK
I have an 05 liberty. I just purchased the RRO rails. Looking for the underside protection. Where did you find that stuff?
I got my front skid plates from Jeepin By Al before they discontinued them to focus only on A arms. The other plates came stock on the renegades, but they are not as beefy as the JBA ones. Check u pull it junk yards for some off renegades. Maybe get lucky and find some JBA ones. Skid row also makes some I hear.
Skidrowoffroad sells plates for KJs, I just installed their front skid on mine, it's really nice.
@@johnsebastianbach Thanks. I'll look at them.
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Where did you get the Aluminium rack?
All-J's in Big bear, CA. They may have a few more left
Do you have links to the front bumper and lift?
The front portion of the lift is not made any more, but its the adjustable coilovers from Jeepin by al.
Here are links for the rear

@@BackcountryRenegade thanks so much!
245/75r16 fit was about perfect on mine, no rubbing but very close on front at lock. 2004 kj
Agreed, the flat hoods are the way to go. Not a fan of the bug eyes
Insecure much?
@@Rootie222 Always can spot someone who has the feminine bug eyes, sorry dude. 😎
@@BackcountryRenegade
Yeah I’ve been trying to see about dimples here and there but it’s going to be on the outside and unless I can really seal the areas odd I’m thinking that route really won’t save much weight..
Thanks for the reply.
What size tires are on your KJ in this video?
I’m currently on 31s but have plenty of room for 32s so will probably do that when these wear out
