    Thanks for posting this video, I'm the Chief drone pilot for my fire department and recently purchased a Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual. For my water and ice rescues I would usually use my Inspire 1 for deploying my inflatable life jackets, setup time is far greater than using the Enterprise dual. I usually deploy a Mustang Throwing Stick (self inflating life ring) which weighs 439.4 grams. Your trial shows me I can handle it which is great. Nothing like a rapid deployment drone with carrying capabilities. Thanks Again, Rick S. Patchogue

    Here's a hot tip for those doing lifting tests. Lift a chain. Have a bunch of chain piled on the ground. The lifting capability can now be determined by the number of links that you can suspend above the pile - assuming the links are of uniform weight and you know that weight.

    Great educational video. I have a Mavic Mini and have not tested its full lifting capability. I do however, have almost every attachment there is for the Mini. From landing skids, extended gear, and floats. Have multiple strobes and six LED spotlights on the front. Most of my configurations weigh in at 94 grams. It handles well with this weight but would not want to push it anymore. Glad to see that it could lift almost twice this much. That puts me in the 50% of Max lift. Feel more comfortable now hauling that extra Weight. Thanks for the informative video. I will place this info in my FYI "between the ears" file.

    @sunshynff 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow, didn't realize this is almost a year old, thought it just came out, well still great video. I did this about 5yrs ago and below are the numbers I got. Before you read them though, they're gonna seem high. I'm recently retired from 25yrs as a firefighter, we were doing this test when me and another guy were just starting a drone program at our dept, and didn't even have a dept. drone yet, so we were using my personal Mavic Pro 1. Now is the motor speed warning you mentioned, same as the ESC warning? We tested a little different, we used after market low noise props, but that form factor is standard on later models. Mavic Pro's props are a tad smaller at 8331 compared to 8743 on the Pro 2. We also didn't quite do the hover test, more if it started to drop naturally we would give it a little throttle and if it would stay with under 20% throttle we'd keep going. But if ESC warning came on we landed immediately because I didn't want fry one. We used water in a small plastic bag for weight, since we did medic calls too we had some expired non-needle 20cc syringes, and a gram is 1/100th shy of being one cc exactly so we could add down to 1 gram technically, but we usually did it at 10-20 grams at a time. Anyway here was our results...
    Mavic Pro, March 2016, wind out of the East, at 12mph, Temp 52F 11C.
    No warnings, no visible stress to the Mavic hovering on own - 810g/1.78lb/28.5oz
    No warnings, sporadic little wobble, no longer could sustain hover more than 5sec. - 865g/1.90lbs/30.5oz
    ESC warning 12sec after launch, wobble but still sporadic, no sustained hover - 902g/1.98lb/31.8oz
    Landed almost immediately on last one and motors were hot to the touch. This was all done for an estimate of how many, if any, flotation devices and what kinds it could carry. We have a lot of water rescues due to river and many lakes in our area we cover. Dept ended up getting a Matrice 600 the next year, but until then we set our SOG (standard operating guideline) at a load weight during rescue ops, at 750g/1.65lb to be safe, with a max of 908g/2.00bs in a IDLH (Immediate Danger to Life or Health) situation at the pilots and safety officer on the scene's discretion. We did that last part because out cheaper plain flotation device that could be dropped to a person not in too much distress and could wait for water rescue team, weighed right at 1.5lbs. similar flotation device but with 100ft of super light weight Prusik cord that would stay attached to quad, so we could pull someone back to shore was exactly 2lbs.
    Like he says, don't try this at home, even though this was pre 107 for me, we were on fire dept property in open field away from roads and people, several other experienced drone pilots were there and as per our training SOG, everyone wore eye protection and a helmet.

    The problem you're missing here as I see it, is that picking up weight straight up is one thing. Add drag in flight if any motion is taken and it changes the dynamics of performance.

    • @ejoneswales
      @ejoneswales 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In a lift it's a vertical motion, but you are correct, if energy was required to move them there are other angular forces at play. What can be obtained is the expected maximum lift. That's probably done anyway by manufacturers, power to weight divided by two, so the weight of a drone is X so the power required Y = X*2.

He has to be moving, grabbing new air. He lands on a platform on top of a tank truck he refills from, then slides off frontwards as he takes off. He showed me a video - pretty scary!

    Good video for those who are into battery modding. I know some folks have already connected two extra batteries to Mavic Pro without a problem, which is close to 400-500 grams of extra weight. But carrying extra weight on and pulling it from under might be a different experience. Also, adding extra weight while cardboard box is on the ground vs when it is up in the air might also influence the test results. Anyway, it's always great to watch your drone experiments. Keep up the good work! Stay safe! Cheers!

    You got to remeber, these drones are not design to carry much payloads. The Props are design to carry it self and be as quiet as possble. The Props and the motor would need to be changed, like the motor needs to be upside down, for lifting applications, and the props would need to be pitch to give max thrust pushing downwards then the ones that are on them right now which are pulling upwards and pitch to get the most rpms to use less power and just enough to carry the drones. Just my thoughs about it. I'm not no expert, but I have flown RC airplains with push and pull designs, and 2 cycle and 4 cycle motors.
    Glad you show what they could do though, that way you could know how many rolls of tissue you cqan send over lol.

    Try the Three blade carbon fiber props for the Mavic 2 Pro. They have much more lift than the stock props. The motors don’t have to spin as fast to create the needed lift, thus will not get the “Max Motor Speed” warning. With these props the aircraft almost wants to lift-off while at idle speed. Like you mentioned in a newer video, you really should try FPV quad. You learn a hell of a lot more about drones in general, when building your own. They are so much more fun as well. Anybody can fly a Mavic, not just anyone can fly an FPV RC quad. I enjoy both, but rarely flight my Mavic’s anymore.

    Interesting video. What I'm wondering, companies like Amazon are wanting to use drones for delivery. Are they having custom made drones or is there a certain drone that is available that will lift more ?

  • @newbtubetecher

    A better test and measure is to open the battery menu while doing this. You can tell when your over drawing them. The motors are capable of much more than a useful extra load. I have modified a bunch of different drones by using this method. This way your doing it to establish useful load.

    you should have turned obstacle avoidance off and done it in sport mode. however. try this again with those settings and do it with the master air screw props! every bit of efficiency counts right ;) also check your mavic mini after this to see if the props struck the fuselage haha.

    You could do that test in a far simpler fashion. Tie the weight of 1kg anchor, place on a scale and then lift , the drone would reduce the 1kg to give you the mass that the drone could lift, you'd need to include the string, hook etc as before, the benefit would be not having to put weights in and out of the box. Just simply read of and subtract from 1kg. If the reading was 755 grams, that would be 1,000 - 755 = 245 gram lift.

    Fun video! I thought the mini would do a lot more, just because mine seems to pull upward with a lot more force than it’s weight when I screw up a hand catch. Hey, next time? Cut a little bit of box or line off to make your “tare” an even 200 (or even whatever).

    I suppose the relatively low "power index" is due to the folding mechanism on the Mini and M2P.

    I was watching to see who much they could lift. I was thinking about using coat hangers and fixing them to hold a target so I could fly the target out to the different ranges 100 yard 200 yards etc. You bend the coat hangers so a portion of it secures to the top on the range stands that are made out of 2x4s.

    If the manufacturer doesn't include a Maximum Take Off Mass (MTOM) in the technical specs then I usually use 115% of the drone weight. The MTOM is the SAFE take off mass, not the maximum the drone can actually lift.

    I was thinking . You might introduce a fishing line called “BRAID” 10/20 # . Offers very little wind resistance

  • @jkp

    I would to say that your math is ok because watching and counting is much easier than standing there with drone and thinking about everything like piloting drone, checking everything if is ok and adding weight.

    As tim060176 says it is interesting what people will do during a period of lock-down. What I was more impressed with, is your ability to make the first two trucks on the road to disappear before they actually passed your place - although your powers seemed to diminish after that - I look forward to seeing a tutorial in the near future once you have mastered the skill.

    It's mad what people will do to occupy their time when they're not allowed out, and even more crazy that in my self isolation I sat here and watched it 😂 I was thinking it would have been easier to attach a fishing scales to a heavy weight and have each drone pull on that, probably need a decent digital one mind to get an accurate reading.

    You could actually calculate this by knowing the maximum rpm of each blade. Add the additional weight per grams in each drone, divide that number on your curios weighted number you think it can carry and that should tell you any weight you think it could lift without having to actually burn your motors.
