I took my AIR 2S up the morning after Milton passed through Central Florida. I hadn't taken her up in about 2 months and in my haste I didn't establish a homepoint. Long story shorter, getting ready to land, almost directly above me and had the very definition of a FlyAway. I was able to keep her Aloft once battery hit (10%) critical level but otherwise effectively unresponsive. The Auto mapping feature would have been a lifesaver. Moral of the story, don't get in too big of a rush and make sure to periodically calibrate your compass and IMU. I did get it back using the find my drone feature for the first time ever. It was close to a mile away in a neighbor's field. Under the circumstances, he was quite understanding and helpful. Thanks Dave. And lastly, while I do love my AIR 2S to death. The AIR 3S, while still fugly might be a worthy upgrade considering the auto mapping and LIDAR. Also, "60mph" daaang! 😋
Nice informative video. Hello from South Africa. I just received my Air 3s, and the first thing I tried was the RTH in complex environments, and it works great. You just gained another subscriber, too. I'm looking forward to your upcoming videos.
Russ thank you for providing an in-depth demonstration of the new Air3S!! very "complete drone" btw your choice in locations and setup enhance the video by a ton! 4:32 you got the drone to fly right under a powerline.... man that was soo close!!! had me on the edge of my seat! Now I'm disappointed in the speed demo... DJI stated the Air3S can reach 60mph top speed so dont know why it didn't get to atleast 58mph. Thanks
Woke up this morning and bought the Air 3s before watching any reviews, just hope it's an upgrade from the Mavic 2 pro I've been flying for years. Thanks for a great review Russ.
Just bought an A3S after flying the M2P since 2018, only 2 flights in and a total game-changer, the RC2 remote was worth the upgrade alone, toss in the improved range, RTH, and improved cameras. Totally worth it for anyone that might be on the fence.
Damn! I was right a year ago! They surely took their time with this! I can't believe they didn't call the Dji Air 3 Pro! Anyway, I got my brand new Epic Mavic 3 FlyMore combo last year for half the price! It changed my whole life! 😍🤩
I am lucky enough to have not had a drone when I purchased my Air 3s. I just took it out for a spin, and I must say I am looking forward to many many adventures. Great video. I have so many more ideas!
Return to home accuracy achieved by the drone's bottom vision position sensors. It takes an image during take off and uses that image to locate the takeoff or "Home Point". DJI started this with the Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom series as well as the Mavic 2 E&T series. They have come a long way since 2017.
Wow! Impressive! Thanks Russ for your presentation of this new drone. I have been waiting for it and anticipating a great performance from it. I will be picking one up really soon. I am anticipating your low light review and hope to see some really nice still photos if you will. Thanks again bud!
Wow, what a timely video for me. I’ve just spent the better part of the day researching this same question. I’ve been using DJI camera drones back to when the Phantom 4 Pro was introduced. So, I’ve used DJIs smaller drones as big as the early Mavics and as small as the Mini 3 Pro. I have really loved the portability of the of the Mini 3 Pro, but I first bought a Phantom 4 for photography: landscape photography, often using bracketed shooting. Over the years, as I have ‘upgraded’ my equipment, it’s clear that I have been compromising on the photography for the sake of portability. I don’t post on social media, so the vertical capability really isn’t of any use to me. So, my choice is pretty clear: I’ll be buying the Air 3S and returning to my photographic ‘roots’. Thanks,Russ. BTW, I really enjoyed the vlog style. I don’t mind a longer video in exchange for getting the feeling of spontaneity and a feeling of more candid and personal commentary. Awesome video.
I get super amazing photos even with my Mini 4k shooting raw and bracketing. The amount of data you get, gives so much flexibility in post-editing. DJI is the GOAT.
Love your "spotter". Great job on the VLOG style, but I enjoy your normal mode too. Keep up the good work and thanks for all you do for the drone community.
Something I haven't seen anyone try yet is putting two drones in the air and testing if the Air3S will follow the other drone and keep it in frame. I think that would be a cool experiment.
Well done Russ ! That real time vision positioning test by not allowing it to acquire the home point is very awesome. Impressed by all the new features.
Just ordered a 3s today. I own a Mavic Pro and an Inspire 2. I've been wanting to get a new folding drone for a while. I think this one will be what I'm looking for. No plans to get rid of the Inspire 2 as I really need/like the RAW footage for matching with my RED. I hope the 3s will match well with my Lumix for 4:2:2 footage. I know I'll love the portability and omni avoidance. I may do a comparison for those that are interested.
Another excellent review, Russ. Thank you. I have wondered why people don’t use the products they are reviewing, like the Action 5, as their main camera. Glad you are doing that. I like what the Air 3s has, but I don’t see it as enough to convince me to purchase. If I was doing more with my drone, I might be more interested, but my drone business just isn’t taking off (pun intended).
Hi its the best video I saw so far for this drone and if you continue to make such a wonderful content for the others drones that dii will make I will watch you all the time and by the way 58 miles per hour is wild I think it is faster than ddi inspire.
When you said "get on the edge of town -- get away from people" I chuckled because I knew what you we're talking about. Last weekend, I went to a nearby lake and arboretum to do audio/video field recording tests and OMG the people that were bugging me. It didn't matter that I positioned in places which were away from trails, etc -- once they spotted me -- they had to see what I was doing. When I was in the arboretum -- the thought came to my mind for possible uses for a good quality drone in a place like that. But then I thought about the real possibility of someone calling the police because they saw a crazy person with a drone in the arboretum. Anyway, nice vid.
Your my go to drone channel and was the first video on the 3s I looked at today. Well done informal style, but non the less very informative. Definitely time to sell my 1st drone from 3 years ago the Mavic Air 2
As per DJI specs for the Air 3S, it can only achieve 27m/s if there is a 6m/s tailwind. DJI says maximum horizontal speed in a windless condition is 21m/s, exactly like the Air 3, and it appears you already know this fact, unlike one or two other TH-camrs who i will not name. Also, this is such a nice real world review. Thank you.
Hi Russ, definitely liked the casual approach to this video, found it refreshing. Probably would be good once an awhile to throw one in, instead of all formal type ones. 👍
I think the auto mode on focus tracking would be more active if you were going slower. Try it on walking or driving slower, because if your travelling at its max tracking speed it can't get around you properly
Hello Russ, thank you for your excellent new style for the DJI Air 3S review. The Action 5 did an outstanding job along with the DJI wireless mics. Excellent work with the real life testing of the 3S. I’ll be watching for your additional reviews on the Air 3S🙏. I’ll be holding off on this new Air 3S since I own the Air 3 w/ RC-2 controller.
So, when you demonstrated the drone returning to home without connected satellites...at 16:26 you only flew it a short distance before you engaged the RTH, what would happen if you flew the drone longer and it had a chance to pick up the satellites needed for GPS, would the home point have gotten reset?
I thought with the tailwind it was supposed to do 30 m/s that’s 66 miles an hour and that was a fairly thick dark coloured cable with plenty of contrast. It would’ve been nice to see react to a thinner silver coloured cable. and I do like the free panorama where you can pick the top left and bottom right of the area you want to take a picture of and it works everything out for you and takes as many as it needs and stitches them. therefore, not requiring a spotter.
Yes, the four wheeler, It's just the tool for the trade. Not to mention it's a great toy, but mainly for work, always for work, that's the way to get it passed your home boss.
18:00 if you look at the top of the drone after it lands and look slightly up and line it up with the houses in the background and then go back to before take off it’s just slightly off!! That’s soooo crazy!!
Clipped a hydro line a few weeks ago on my Mini 4 Pro... saw last minute but too late... did a summersault mid air, caught itself, and waited for next direction.... think just the bottom touched. Got lucky!
60 MPH is going to be huge for action shots, chasing cars, drifting, racing, cycling, etc... The 1 inch sensor with 14 stops is massive! The LiDAR unit should really help with obstacle voidance and hopefully in the near future, someone makes a LiDAR mapping app for the LiDAR unit!
Great video Russ! I like this style, but I like all your videos. I'm still using a Mavic 2 Pro, I'm wondering if I should upgrade to another model. Thanks!
And to add, I have been using this feature for following me while riding my ebike. I added a controller attachment to my handle bars and the 4 keeps up with me, even at 28 miles per hour!
I think the 60 mph speed was in the promo 3S with an older firmware. Mine reaches 68 kmh which is 42 mph. This agrees with the DJI manual. Also, at 60 you will probably see the props in the corners with the 24mm lens.
I hear you Russ. I have an ATV channel that has also spread out to two way radios, my wife’s Jeep, my pickup, cameras, emergency lighting….if I’m interested in it, there’s a video on it, lol.
Since the new auto tracking mode was launched last year for the new software update, like the The DJI Mini 4 Pro's auto tracking mode the DJI Air 3S tracks the user from different positions as they move around, transitioning randomly. It's best used in open areas, and using it in areas with trees or along a road or trail can lead to the drone losing the subject or crashing.
Funny you should say about a drone atv channel but the reason I am watching is to see if this drone is any good to track my tri-z 3 wheeler as you say it’s fast. So can I home the drone in on me on the trike put the handset down & go for a ride? Obviously I can’t drive with the controller in my hand so is this drone still the one for me ? I thought I could leave the controller in the van & ride round a bit & the drone itself would follow me?
Not sure if it’s just perspective but when you did the flyby at high speed I noticed the obstacle avoidance was disabled and it looked like you got pretty close to those power lines. Nice 4x4 for tooling around though definitely useful for your area.
A drone, ATV, BBQ, Camping Gear Channel would be incredible!!!
Thank you for highlighting photos, so many videos skip right over it. That panoramic was stunning! Great video

That is amazing that you don’t have to set a home point. You’re the only reviewer talking about this.
Great video! Thank you for putting it together. I just purchased my first drone (DJI Air 3S) right after watching this video.
Always cool to see someone’s first impressions with gear. Thanks for taking us along for the ride!

Holy crap, that’s a beautiful building Man. Love this show. Feels very professional.
Really fantastic video and I loved this format a lot. Perfectly, natural!
