Nigel this current series in the Cairngorms has been one of your best ever, I know you Photograph all over the world but there is something about this latest series that's just superb, you ask for ideas for future Videos but seriously "It can't get much better than this" It's mind blowing content and quality that cannot be beaten, The best Photography Channel on TH-cam by a country Mile by the best Photographer, Regards, Colin.

Hi Nigel. I know this area really well, having spent many weeks up there walking, climbing or on my bike. That first spot you stopped at was proper plantation until just a few years ago with dense forest right up to the side of the road you were walking up. If it had still been like that, you probably wouldn't have stayed long enough to have discovered the wee lochan. The current landowner cut down all the non-native tree species and only left the indigenous ones behind (the few that you were looking at) and he is now letting that whole area return to it's natural state, which will take many years. It would be great to see Caledonian Pine back there in my lifetime. Hats off to him!

Hello Mr. Danson, your best video achieved 2.5 million views. To me it is quite obvious why this is the case.
I apologize for the click-bait approach because I really don't know how to do good work when it comes to TH-cam. (I hope this gets your attention.) But I'm trying to improve and that's how I came across your channel.
Regarding your channel: In the video “7 PHOTOGRAPHY MISTAKES I see all the time” you answer a fundamental question that interests many people: What makes a picture better?
You discuss this using many examples and the thumbnail also reflects the problem directly.
However, I came across this video with a more general question: What makes an image interesting anyway. You seem to be one of the few people...on TH-cam...to even know this. Unfortunately there is little to no content on this or it is difficult to find. Maybe you could answer this question?
It would be nice if you read this comment, or even record it as a suggestion for a video.
    Best regards

I see you’re using the 24-120 and 24-200. Even though the 20-120 is F4, the 24-200 is close. Why switch back and forth?

I do appreciate everyone who puts in a lot of effort in making videos even though ofc it is to benefit from it :D
I also like the fact that as you mention in your previous video that taking the camera of the tripod is giving you more freedom. I am a photographer and lately more of a landscape (and bird) photographer, and i just don't understand this obsession with using tripod ALL the time. I sometime use tripod but mainly for long exposure and night photography, I even shoot with the R5 and 28-70 handheld at 1/8sec which is usually my preferred long exposure for waterfall.
I do admit that sometimes it is a must if you need to focus stack and maybe exposure bracket, but that with the latest cameras I find less and less important, the dynamic range is that good.
What I noticed in this video is that I find the shutter speed and ISO setting very weird, ISO 64 to shoot still photography at 1/8sec and 1/4000 at ISO 640, I am sorry but those settings do not make any sense to me :D Maybe you want elaborate?

Great stuff Nigel. I've learnt more from you in the few weeks I've subscribed to your channel than I've learnt in 20 years of taking photos. Just a thought for you - you really must head over the other side of the Cairngorms into Deeside. Base yourself in Ballater and explore, there are loads of places with gnarly trees to shoot. P S. "Lakes" in Scotland are "Lochs". 😊

Nigel; advice question: looking at a lightweight tripod for hiking. 1.15kg. Looks good, but is this totally a waste of time as it’ll Just be too light and short (133cm without centre extension). Is it like a fact of life that for hiking tripods for landscape you just need a heavy tripod to be practical for the images?

What is wrong with this dude. Who has brainwashed him into thinking that every scene is amazing, beautiful, and "doesn’t get better than this", when in reality its nothing special at all. Sure, its a fine winters day, but you didn’t capture anything special at all. Feels like you could walk around in a war zone with dead bodies everywhere, saying stuff like "Its so beautiful" "It doesn’t get better than this" and so on......weird....

Great video, but as I was reading the camera settings, I was wondering why you use the settings you use? And also the order (priority) in which you set them. Do you choose your ISO first, your shutter speed (although I doubt it if you're shooting from a tripod) or the aperture. Please elaborate on some of the images or even when you're walking and come upon a scene that strikes your fancy. Thanks!

  • @alangauld6079
    @alangauld6079 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

The reason the mountains in Torridon look bigger, although lower, is that you start at sea level, whereas in the Cairngorms you are already well over 1000 feet up. Also, the Cairngorm hills are much bulkier so the summit is often 5-10 miles away, whereas with the steep hills in Torridon you are only a mile or two away. If you want dramatic mountain views in the Cairngorms you need to work for them, and that means 10 mile or more round trips up the long glens that penetrate the interior. It's nice to see the Cairngorms getting some love this year though, Henry Turner was up there a little while ago too. I often feel they get neglected by photographers.

That's a shame about the ducks. It's happened to me before. It probably means people have been feeding them. Don't think of it as a disaster. When it does happen to me I try to turn it a wildlife shot or two. Even if they're not portfolio shots it can capture a memory.

Do you ever get back to the studio and decide to pull a frame out of a video? Some of those walk throughs and b-roll look like they'd make good shots and your Z8's video is higher resolution than many camera's stills. Seems it could work well for non shutter dependant shots.

Great series! Although I have not done a lot of winter photography I've always been drawn to images of snow, in paintings as well as photography. Some very beautiful images in these videos.

Another very inspiring video, thank you Nigel! Poor ducks, though, they just want to come and say hello :-) I can't wait for next week to see why you say they ruin the shots :-)

I've really enjoyed this series of videos Nigel, I knew you were coming up to the NE Scotland, where I live, and hoped when we had the recent snow storms you were getting the images you hoped for. Although I think on the day of filming this video you were in danger of suffering from sever sensory overload! Some spectacular photographs, thank you for sharing. 😄

About your question about studio video. How to adjst green in woodland photography? I am editing photos presently and one thing that I struggle a lot, it is to adjust the green in woodland photography. I always feel that the color green is not as awesome as it was in the field. Especially when there is mountains with trees in the background They always shows blueish and I never know how blueish they should appear on the final image...Or at sunrise/sunset as they appears magenta in that case. Very difficult for me to have a great result that will reflect the reality and the beauty of the scene properly. Thank you! Have a great day!

Nigel, I know you were there for the trees, the light and snow and such, but I'm surprised you didn't photograph those icicles hanging from under the small pedestrian bridge with the brook and small falls, a long exposure. Nevertheless, those photos are stunning. They give you the chills not just because of the cold snow conditions but because of the vista's and compositions.

    Good morning :)
Love that video - Having the right mindset is as important if not more important that the actual photography skills.
It helps so much to see your "thinking process" in these kinds of videos. You are human as well. You experiment. You rarely but sometimes struggle on the perfect composition.
I'm really looking up to your photography so it helps so much to see you explore.
For a studio idea I'd love to see "how to organize after a photoshoot" - like cleaning gear, backing up images, organizing the bad again. 🙂

Simply stunning. I love photographing in the snow but I live in Australia. We do have some beautiful snow areas but sometimes a very long drive. So enjoyed this video. One thing, Wellies are not the best snow boots - even I have good Arctic strength boots.
