Great video and I always appreciate you sharing best practices and being really honest about what could’ve been better. Thanks too for sharing the link to the photos on the website. Really informative video which I completely enjoyed!
Nigel, new to the channel, and I like it! thank you. Been many years ago with film/slides and mostly manual cameras with a meter. Life with family and twists and turns, now much older and wanted to get back into it here in SW colorado usa, with some stunning landscapes. Missed a few, Ansel Adams moments, no camera, errrrrrr!!!!.
I take my hat off to you Nigel, your honesty about your day 1 images not being your usual high standard was refreshing. A lot of TH-camrs would just say they’re awesome and move on. Shows you can critique your own images. Some of them though were definitely worthy of praise. Keep up the great work.
Wow! Amazing shots. Thank you for sharing! Enchanting, magical scenery. I love the one that you were not so sure of, with the darker bottom left ferns contrasting the top right triangular brightness. That was my absolute favourite! Hard to choose, though, you had so many incredible images there. You really can’t beat Nature! I’m glad to see you feel like your ‘old self’ back again ‘post-op’, Nigel, even a little glimpse of pebbles.
I love your guidance on composition, it's definitely something I struggle with. I'm also interested in what you did for post-processing. I spend lots of time and don't fell I ever get quite the glow that you seem to find in your images.
Hi Nigel, great video of Padley Gorge. It was a sit back with a mug of tea and enjoy the beautiful trees. My wife and I go to Longshaw near Fox House quite often as it's handy to get to and the cafe does great sausage rolls. It's been many years since we crossed over the road and walked down into Padley Gorge. At the moment we're still trying to get to the pond at Longshaw. For a few days last winter, Longshaw was draped in fog as was much of Derbyshire, and it felt like a different world. The trees were misty silhouettes which made focusing a bit more fiddley and many of my shots didn't come out well; but a few did and I'm hoping for some more misty days to go and experience it all again. I'm retired now so I'll be able to take my time. Looking forward to rediscovering Padley.
I appreciate your joy for the outdoors. I have had several of these type of foggy oak forest days as of late here in Germany. Sometime I feel like I am the only one who appreciates this scene. Thanks
Wow what a place to be with a camera and I guess it was your lucky day, I hope you done the lotto on the way home! That was a great video on woodland photography. Well done and thanks for taking us there!
I have discovered your secret to fantastic woodlands and landscape photography.... You are passionate about nature and the beauty that surrounds you. It translates into beautiful photos. Thank you for sharing your passion.
Im so amazed by your honesty. Thank you for sharing your mistakes so that I've a fighting chance of getting better....thank you. Really enjoyed todays episode.
I love the first print you show Nigel. I've photographed those trees several times. It's worth checking the tree on the left that is leaning out of shot a little closer the next time you visit. There are a couple of nice surprises at the bottom.
Child in a sweet shop comes to mind Nigel. Second day at Padley where my favourite. I had the same problem last year to many compositions. But still one of my favourite places to photograph. Keep them coming Nigel. Rodders 👍.
Yet more great woodland photography, from what looks like an absolutely fab location. The autumnal silver birch shot is my preferred image over the summer version of it at 30 mins in. It looks so painterly.
Hi Nigel! Welcome back... Your energy and enthosiasm is oh so inspiring. Thanks for sharing your wisdom. Enjoyed following you on your magical walk, oh so inspiring. Love it!
This must be one of the best video I have seen from you, really amazing photos. I really like the photo with the rock/fern/tree (16.66), there is triangle on the left side, further back is the crossover trees kind of triangle, then the twisted tree which all form a diagonal line. I prefer the polarised version of the polarised/non-polarised photos. Tank Nigel for the time you spent creating this video.
thank you so much for showing your mistakes. i love photography but when it comes to outdoors, I often struggle on side and at home with understanding what I did wrong and why I didn't capture the desired object the way I wanted to. I have learned a lot in the video.
WOW! Incredible woodland, atmosphere and photos! I would go crazy with my camera in that situation. Thank you for the video. I always learn something from your great content.
Very well done Nigel. You're a one man show! You do it all for us, and your taste in photography is enlightening as well as refreshing. The time blitzes by as I watch your TH-cam videos. Bravo, and thank you. 👍 📷 🤩
Same happened to me last week. I turned up at the location at it was amazing. I struggled with keeping my excitement down to make sure I was getting the best footage. Love shots 5 & 6. For me the polarised shot was better. My favourite was the shot with the cow sometimes things just happen and you've gotta be in the right place and ready!
Hey Nigel... Another GREAT video. What a beautiful area, and what BEAUTIFUL conditions!! I think that the photo you referenced in your video looks much better 'with' the polarizer than without it. The colors just look SO much deeper with the glare gone! Thanks for your insight!! 🤩
I think your favorite photograph of the series is the best, too - for one simple reason: simplicity. Most of the other images were a little too busy for me. But all in all, a great video!
Such an amazing woodland and fog which you have preserved with your beautiful photos and drone video. It really doesn't get better than this! - Oops, sorry if you have a copyright on this phrase.
Just may be the best woodlands video you've ever made. I feel like I just got a course on woodlands photography in this one video. As for the images, one non-polarized and one polarized I lean toward the polarized version. Just seems a bit more painterly to me.
Another epic video....does anyone else find themselves smiling the whole way through...your enthusiasm is totally infectious. "Defying Gravity" and "Silver Ghosts" are my favourites but they are all exquisite images. Thank you so much for sharing....can't wait for the next one.
Some cracking images there, and some very good wisdom. I was there the day after , from what a local told us, and got some superb afternoon sun images in the same area. Keep it up, they are a great of learning and think about your images
Great video. Really jealous of your amazingly interesting, twisty trees and your fog. I went out to 7 different locations and now know in my region of the US we only have trees that grow very straight and tall. And no fog. Will have to get truly creative.
Talk about a ‘kid in a sweet shop’ moment 😁 love those conditions and the sound advice about taking more time over composition. And did you really say you were waiting for that cow to mooo-ve? 🤣
Nigel.....exquisite images. Do you have a video where you go into detail as to what paper type you select for printing and why that particular paper? Just like the frame selected the paper can be pretty impactful on the final image.
Of the two photos at 13:27, I prefer the unpolarised one---the greater contrast (which surprised me) lends a better definition and separation of the elements.
Fantastic video, thank you so much for another inspiration! For a printed version that can hang on the wall I would prefer the polarized version but when it comes to a photo in digital version I would prefer the unpolarized version. Greetings from Poland!
It was a pleasure to meet you Nigel at the beginning of what I think was your first day. Apologies if I startled you so early in the morning. It was an amazing day, the fog was awesome. Terrific video and great to see those silver birch images. I like the autumn version of the spring image best, and the images at the top of the gorge onto lawrence were excellent. Cheers 👍🏻
This is why I miss living in the Pacific NW (Washington, USA) because where I live in SoCal I can’t get to the fog unless I get up in the middle of the night and drive several hours - these shots are inspiring.
That was an amazing adventure Nigel. Amazing trees and very cool fog means great conditions. Can't wait for my 1st trip to the lakes in a few months. I'm just glad to see you out and moving around much better than before.
Padley Gorge is certainly an amazing location. I went there early October just as the autumn colour was developing but no fog - I am planning to go again in the next two weeks which I expect will have a much more wintery feel about it. Thank you Nigel for this amazing video.
You should explore beyond the gorge, there is a lot of history and archeology in that area, in Lawrence Field the medieval farmstead and ancient boundary, the quarry and cobbled roadway near surprise view, then as you go down towards Grindleford train station (where you find the legendary Grindleford Cafe) there's the old explosives store, in Padley you can find the Padley incline where you can follow the trackbed to the quarry used to provide the stone for the Derwent Dams.
Incredible stuff Nigel, you are certainly blessed by coming to the right place at the right time. What a place that gorge is, makes you think the word gorgeous is derived from that place. I liked your advice about keeping distance in mind during foggy conditions, as well as taking care of getting the branches in focus that might come into the direction of the camera. I totally understand your excitement and that you'd be running around like a headless chicken in these conditions and with so many characterful trees.
It was great to meet you and Rick in the car park on Tuesday and this video encapsulates everything I experienced both on that day and again on Thursday when the fog was even thicker in the gorge. It's amazing to see you photographed many of the trees that I did in those perfect conditions. I too was running around like a headless chicken on Tuesday but slowed down a lot on the Thursday - no prizes for guessing which photos were better. Great video by the way. Of course, on Tuesday we didn't know how long the fog was going to last and hence the haste but by Thursday it was obvious that it was going to hang around all day which took the pressure off.
Nigel, I commented on another photography website a few days ago about something you mentioned in this video, taking too many photos. If I get in that rut I think back to the time when I only shot Kodachrome 64 (yes I’m old) and had very little money for film and processing. Back then I was slow and meticulous about the the proper exposure and framing as a result I got a much higher percentage of good shots than I do now. It’s so easy to take several hundred digital photos in a day. When I get carried away like that, I try to pretend that there is KR64 in my camera.
What a beautiful place! And some really lovely photos, the fog is magical. Its interesting, though, how photo preferences are so personal. It seems you often take your photos from head or neck height, and often with a downward camera angle, and often in the 24-40 mm range. In the photos you showed here, many of them felt to me sort of like their heads were cut off, so to speak. I'm still quite new and have only experimented so much, but my favorite lens right now is 85mm equivalent (micro four thirds 42.5, f1.7), at waist height, or nearly ground level, with an upward camera angle. And some of the things I noticed and was hoping you would include in the photo, it seemed you didn't even notice (like some fencelines, for example). But, I have always been fascinated by all the micro stories that are happening in any bigger picture. Thanks for sharing, I hope I get to visit this area some day. Though, I also live in an area with some similar beauty, in Oregon, USA, not too far from the Pacific coast.
Great video - methinks you enjoyed yourself! There's so much potential at Padley Gorge - I was there some weeks ago (in pouring rain!) photographing the millstones, as per your final shot. As you say, it's so tempting to rush....
I adore Padley. It's a wonderful place to go even without a camera. The mono was probably my favourite. Can't see me getting back there this year now, but never say never. We all do when faced with such amazing conditions. Less is usually more but you can't tell that to a kid in a sweetshop.
Very similar to a walk we took two weeks ago in Dunkeld, mist all around and colour, but tricky getting an epic composition. I prefer the unpolarised and the green shot - just 😊
Thanks for watching! Make sure you check out all the photos here - www.nigeldanson.com/padleyfog
Stunning pics. I must make a trip to the area. How is it in summer? I know the colors won’t be as vibrant but is it still work the trip?
i like the photos you take and can I copy your photos to show on FB or IG ? Because I'm worried about the copyright of your phots.
Great video and I always appreciate you sharing best practices and being really honest about what could’ve been better. Thanks too for sharing the link to the photos on the website. Really informative video which I completely enjoyed!

So much fog and snow on the way this weekend! I’m struggling to pick a good spot 🤔🤔🤔

Such an epic couple of days!! Thanks for the shout out, very much enjoyed our morning of epic fog 😄
The unpolarized shot is my favorite. It’s just more vibrant. Excellent photos love them!
What a beautiful video, photos, place, conditions & trees again!!
Absolutely love it!!
(Beautiful trees everywhere in that place, wowh!)
This is for sure one of the best videos you made. The images are fantastic and your shared knowledge is inspiring to go out!!!
Thank you Nigel !! Wonderful pictures !!
An excellent video again Nigel. Your enthusiasm is infectious and there is so much to learn from you. Thank you.
Beautiful trees and environment to see and make photos.
Nice work.
Great mixture of self-examination and enthusiasm! Always pursuing a better composition -- Outstanding!
Fantastic shots Nigel and great once again to have met you that morning. Hope the back continues to get well.
Wow! Amazing shots. Thank you for sharing! Enchanting, magical scenery. I love the one that you were not so sure of, with the darker bottom left ferns contrasting the top right triangular brightness. That was my absolute favourite! Hard to choose, though, you had so many incredible images there.

I wouldn't say old self but can get out a little more now. Thanks for the kind words
I also loved this one!
what a great collection of images Nigel, a day like that must have been good for the soul
I moved away years ago and I'd forgotten how superb Padley can be. Well done on keeping the photos people free(-:
Your honesty and transparency is not only what makes these videos great: it’s what makes you a great photographer
Wonderfully atmospheric photos of my favourite city. Brilliant compositions and lots of ambience. Superb.
Totally worth the watch; the whole video. Thank you.
Really amazing! Thank you so much for your detailed and clear explanation of your process. Love your enthusiasm! Lovely compositions….
I love your guidance on composition, it's definitely something I struggle with. I'm also interested in what you did for post-processing. I spend lots of time and don't fell I ever get quite the glow that you seem to find in your images.
Absolutely loves the shot of the tree you took at 17:50. Awesome stuff 👌

Thanks! One of the things I really miss about living in northern Minnesota was the fog. Love the fog. sigh.....
Awesome..... as always. Well done and a big thank you for being so inspiring.😊
Amazing conditions and images. Love Padley. Have been several times through Autumn hoping for foggy conditions unfortunately to me to no avail!
Your most enjoyable woodland video yet. Truly an amazing woodland. So many beautiful images!
Thanks so much for your amazing video. Your enthusiasm is inspiring. Always look forward to your videos.
Great Nigel.
Incredible video and images. What a mystical location.
Im so amazed by your honesty. Thank you for sharing your mistakes so that I've a fighting chance of getting better....thank you. Really enjoyed todays episode.
Very much enjoyed watching the video; thank you Nigel!
I love the first print you show Nigel. I've photographed those trees several times. It's worth checking the tree on the left that is leaning out of shot a little closer the next time you visit. There are a couple of nice surprises at the bottom.
I definitely prefer the summer green photo ;)
What an amazing video and amazing photos! I tell myself I'm not jealous, but I'm also lying to myself 😅
Ha! Thanks!
Nigel, FANTASTIC video. Shots are amazing, and you show a pro like you can still get caught up in the moment by not slowing down. Thank you.
Child in a sweet shop comes to mind Nigel. Second day at Padley where my favourite. I had the same problem last year to many compositions. But still one of my favourite places to photograph. Keep them coming Nigel. Rodders 👍.
Wonderful video, Nigel. 34 mins fully justified. Thank you as ever 🙂
Love it!
Loved this video. Hard to pic a favorite but the one with the cow in the fog as the "cherry on top" is just amazing.

If there's fog, my trigger finger starts to itch.
Some beautiful photos again Nigel.
Adding the link to the web page is great. Gives time to look at individual images. Thanks for that.
What a beautiful place!
Def the polarized shot Nigel. Deeper colour and more even tone and lighting across the frame.
Enjoyable vid as usual mate.
I think your favorite photograph of the series is the best, too - for one simple reason: simplicity. Most of the other images were a little too busy for me. But all in all, a great video!
You took some stunning shots! Wow!
Fantastic!
i have been to Padley so so many times in fact i have a Autumn video out, but i have never had mist... WOW what a difference
Absolutely love your images, especially 'Through the Mist'. Love the painterly images. Well done.
Such an amazing woodland and fog which you have preserved with your beautiful photos and drone video.

That Forest is absolutely amazing

Thanks once again for all the advice and sharing you teriffic images. Just put Padley woods on my bucket list! 😉
That fog is incredible! Great shots as always...must have been very serene surrounded by the forest and the fog!
The print photos are really beautiful. Well done.
Talk about a ‘kid in a sweet shop’ moment 😁 love those conditions and the sound advice about taking more time over composition. And did you really say you were waiting for that cow to mooo-ve? 🤣

God, what a gorgeous place! Love your work, Nigel! You always inspire me to get out there and snap a few (hundred).
Yep - explored all those 👍🏼

Love these linger videos Nigel 🤙 I really like that shot of the light and dark dark trees in the left
All shots look great, and I prefer the polarised photo! Nigel you are thinking of JerryRigEverything with the "Just like a little Lego" quote.
Been waiting for this video, I met you in padley on this day, you wasn't the only one snapping away like an excited kid with these foggy conditions
Such an enjoyable video Nigel
Great video - methinks you enjoyed yourself! There's so much potential at Padley Gorge - I was there some weeks ago (in pouring rain!) photographing the millstones, as per your final shot. As you say, it's so tempting to rush....
At 13.28 i prefer the polarised version. Softer and richer colors... Great video!
Amazing photographs 😍👌
I adore Padley. It's a wonderful place to go even without a camera. The mono was probably my favourite. Can't see me getting back there this year now, but never say never. Just need to get some heating in the motorhome working. It's a great video, some very nice shots and some very sound advice that you struggle to follow yourself. We all do when faced with such amazing conditions. Less is usually more but you can't tell that to a kid in a sweetshop.
Very similar to a walk we took two weeks ago in Dunkeld, mist all around and colour, but tricky getting an epic composition. I prefer the unpolarised and the green shot - just 😊
I understand and agree with your comments about taking time to get composition perfect, but I still liked your day 1 images best.
I like the white and brighter warm colors in the unpolarized version.
