You know it's an amazing find when you are speechless. Don't apologize for having a genuine reaction to a find. That's why we love to watch your video. Right now I'm suffering through a cold, but this video put a smile on my face and lifted my spirits. Congratulations John!
OMG! What a coin!!! Nice one John 😀Never apologise for being excited by a find!! I'm sure everyone here will agree that we were all almost as excited as you!! Well deserved find, Happy Silver Anniversary again!! 🎆🎇🎉🥂Slàinte Mhath! Yiamas!
@thescottishdetectorist so welcome! Was a joy to watch 😍 Glad to have been there. Always great to learn about different coins too. Here's to the next discovery 😎 P.S. How many beers would it have bought you? 😂
I bet he was drunk and tried copying the teenagers chucking the lead seals to see how far they could get them, and then he realized what he'd just done. The idiot! I bet his wife just killed him. I bet he never told her, though.
Hahaha 🤣 I almost needed a medic as you’ll see. I’m not sure why I revert to a five year old boy on Christmas morning when I get an epic find…. But I do 🤪
Gongratulations mate on finding a beautiful stunning coin. As you said its for moments like this why we do this hobby. Really well done mate on finding a truly crackin silver coin.👏👏🙌👏👏
🤑 You deserve it John!! Nobody on the internet deserves it more!!!! Congrats on a super find!!! What a video!! Absolutely gets the blood flowing!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Wow, what a chance find John, just spectacular. That coin has a rarity value of 88 out of 100. With 0 being the most common and 100 being the rarist. Will this have to be declared? All my best wishes to you and the family.
Stunning and extremely rare Merk/Mark John - See if there is a mint mark below Charles bust - looks like a small thistle rather than a letter 'F'. If so it's a Type II. 2/3 of a pound Scots- also the value of a unit of land. At the time pretty much the same value as an English shilling but much rarer. Never seen one in the flesh. Congrats!! Truly awesome and valuable but best of all, it's Scottish silver!!
I couldn’t be happier for you John, your calm demeanor and true excitement are palpable. I will just say, I wish I was there. The current behavior of my fellow Americans is shameful, I can always come to the Scottish Detectorist to lift my spirits, Thank you.
That was just incredible, John. If I ever find anything that old, I will have the same reaction, especially since the chances of that happening here in Texas are really slim. Cheers from Texas, and may the detecting angels bring you more great finds soon.
+1 No, King Charles II did not found Charleston, South Carolina, but he did grant the land to eight of his friends, who then established the settlement: 1663 King Charles II granted the Carolina territory to eight of his loyal friends, known as the Lords Proprietors. 1670 English settlers established Charles Town, named after King Charles I, on the west bank of the Ashley River. 1680 The settlement moved to its current location on Oyster Point, a peninsula between the Ashley and Cooper Rivers. 1783 The city adopted its current name of Charleston. Charleston was the first comprehensively planned town in the Thirteen Colonies. It was governed by the Grand Model, a visionary plan created by John Locke for the Lord Proprietors.
Thanks so much. I know, I’d love to know the story and my goodness what a loss. For a skilled person probably 2 weeks wages maybe more and for a labourer wow…. A month? Maybe more?
Well, not much we can say that hasn't been said! The goodness you showed the Hoover Boys came back around. It all comes back around! Much love from South Carolina, BTW, Peggy's sister just became a new Subscriber!!!!!!!
I certainly can understand why you're feeling a wee bit gobsmacked! Got a chuckle when you found the merc and had to have a lie down! So happy for you, John! Congratulations
You're awesome! Great history teacher, great, tour guide, and a very exciting detectorist!!! I really love how composed you are when you find a stellar item 😂! Thank you for taking us all along with you!!!
I must say that you've got an amazing find there! Though I must add, that CC on that coin is not only limited to English monarchs. I know more about Swedish coins since I find plenty of them here in Finland. Here I've found Charles XI 5 öre silver coin with the same CC and I know for sure there exists coins for Charles XII and Charles XIII with the same symbol in them. I have no clue why it is a europe-wide phenomenon on valuable silver coins, but interesting fact nonetheless for Carolus named kings. Edit: Also, Charles XI reigned from 1660-1697 but first 12 years were his mother's regency. I have found a 2 mark coin from 1669, which looks very similar to your coin apart from the other side, where instead of mag etc. It has 3 crowns, date, mintmark and 2 M. My coin reads "CAROLUS XI REX SVECIAE". After he became of age, his coins began using "Dei gratia" in them. Additionally, only "big" coins had the portrait of the king in them, while smaller silver and copper coins usually had a coat of arms, lion with crown, or something like that in them. It wasn't until 1809-1818 that the monarch's portrait started appearing on the smaller coins as well. Though after 1809, Russian coins became much more common, as previously they had only got into Finnish soil with Russian troops during wartimes.
So happy for you John. Your reaction was priceless, I couldn’t stop smiling. Beautiful coin and well deserved. The other finds were also interesting. 🎉🎉🎉
Aw, how exciting for you, what an incredible find. I thoroughly enjoyed watching your excitement and was sad there was no one there for you to get excited with, but thank you for filming it and for sharing it here with us. YAY

To think that somebody, centuries ago, handled that and dropped it when walking across that very ground. Mind blowing.
I bet he was drunk and tried copying the teenagers chucking the lead seals to see how far they could get them, and then he realized what he'd just done. The idiot! I bet his wife just killed him. I bet he never told her, though.
Quick, call a medic. John is lying down.

We are from Greer! Hello from the upstate!
@ ahhhh, way cool! I know your area well! South Carolinians unite!
100 miles northwest, in the Columbia, SC area! Congrats!
