They have more than doubled their subscriber count since starting this car, so it's working.
Ryan, I am SO badly going to miss you prancing around, telling us “THIS is Mat Armstrong’s E24….”. Please don’t leave it too long before taking on a mega project. Your work is addictive watching.
The powdercoat looks good, but i have been doing such work in the past, its a big risk on a sheetmetal carbody, moisture can creep up under the paint and make it rust and rot more so then a traditional paintjob, seen such corrosion on trailer chassies. It could use some additonal rust protection inside where one cant see or reach. Awsome fab and metal work though.
I can't imagine a small fender bender repair would be easy with the powder coating. Sounds great if it's a trailer queen show car. Daily driver, it seems impractical. Nice work to be sure.
I thought powder coat cracked if it was used on a chassis. Didn't people start to powder coat tubular chassis on sports / kit cars and it ended really badly and just cracked at All the joints
Powdercoat shrinks back as it bakes and will show every little imperfection, if you are willing to powdercoat this, then you must do impeccable work!! Looking forward to seeing this one finished lads
WOW WOW WOWser what an absolutely stunning finish, it doesn't get any better than this from top guys on their A-game, and I'm sure Mat will pick up the baton and make it the envy of the BMW fraternity. I've loved every minute of the series and can't get enough, so am happy you have loads of other projects on the go.
I cannot believe that all these videos you have completed on Mat's car and he has never once interacted on your work .... amazing results Ryan, your craftsmanship does not show anywhere on the final powdercoat, which is a testament to your amazing skill.
It looks amazing, BUT, how about powdercoat durability against flexing, would it not get cracked? To remove powdercoat to fix something after, is going to be an absolute hell for someone to fix.
I was thinking that, also having to drill into it and not chipping chunks off. But I’ve no experience whatsoever with power coat and sure he knows what he’s doing
Going back to the shell and bringing back these cars in my mind is a massive service to automotive heritage. They should be kept on the road and enjoyed and protecting them this way is the best way to ensure their longevity. Not to mention they just look sublime
Hi guys, what can I say….. beautiful car….. absolute amazing restoration…. There were moments when I didn’t think you could do it and moments when you ask why ! What craftsmanship 🔨⚒️🎉💥👍🫵🏻
It’s great to see craftsman doing magnificent work, my question to the powder coating, how do you make sure it all ends up as a level coat? Is there a risk of overspray like painting?
Cheers for the comment! It's electrostatic that allows pc to stick, then you've just got to apply it evenly or more if certain areas need it. It does overspray so to combat that you either need to mask off areas that you don't want coating using heat resistant tape or simply sand down the areas that have got overspray on them (like the doors on the car for example) 😊
Not a fan of powder coating in terms of long term corrosion resistance, especially on car undersides. One stone chip and moisture creeps underneath the powder coated skin.
To be fair it's not really that different with paint, except the stone has an easier time of chipping the paint. The only real drawback I can image with powder coat is if you need to do any more work what-so-ever on the body it's going to a pain in the ass to prep and then somehow match the coat that's already on there.
What a absolutely beautiful job finishing the rusty shell you started off with. Congratulations fellas, as long as Mat doesn’t want to put his crazy wrap over it!
"back in the day" - sound like an old person - we used to get in plastic coated bike frames that were generally horrible and the only way to remove said rubbish was blast/mechanical scraping/blast /mech/blast/mech etc etc until clean, it wasn't fun but on a bike frame, just about doable, on a car, nope, in the bin. Is modern powder coated different ?
I feel for the powder coated, I’ve done that job and hated big chassis’s because they just cool too fast and you never see the results you really want to, it’s a good job and will do just fine, but not to your personal standard expectations. It did come out the oven looking good though so well done 👍
Amaaaaazing work! Wow! This is going to be my favourite Mat car restore watch this one. What a platform to start from. Yorkshire👍🏾. If I could give my own E39 such care. Keep old Bimmers rolling👊🏾
Amazing processes but how much would all your work and this cost for a normal person? I think it is only really doable for people with serious cash to throw at it? :) I'd love to do that on my mk1 Golf :)

Maybe a stupid question, for the ones that works with powdercoating, but is powder coating the chassi they way to go, in regards to stop future rust? I mean all the lawn mower decks and other farming and forestry equiptment which is powdercoated is actually proper shit. Do farm equptment use cheap powdercoat and/or poor job to it? I myself use alot of 2 comp marine paint, and that seems to hold up quite good.
WOW .. !! The powder coating makes it look like a brand new car straight from the factory . Note - wasn't sure if Camera angle/reflection but at 17:02 sunroof top side whats the blemish mark ? is it tape ? This has been a great project + loved every moment
There's no denying the shell looks fantastic in powdercoat but I have reservations about using it. Have I missed the 'dry build' episode where you refit all the body panels to check alignment and gaps and allow for the extra thickness of the coating?
First... What is that waterfall thing in the background? Is it some type of air filter? Second, Is there a way that you could coat/paint the inside of all the rails so that if water got inside it wont rust? Or is it capped off on all those parts? or just no way water can get it? Love the work! super cool to watch as well!
one thing forsure that wont rust again for a while i own a powder shop all the products he used are top quality make sure to fill everywhere with wax oil :)
Great Job! But I‘ve actually never seen someone adding a powdercoat as first rust protection layer. I mean you plugged the threads and so these are the first spots they rust later? Here we usually take the whole chassis in a bath which chemically removes the last tad of rust in the last corner and after thats neutralized it gets into another bath to flood every corner with a rust protecting primer. Awesome job by James - the super-gloss clear coat looks super-difficult to apply, how do you tell where you've already done and which bits you've missed? I get it with the primer and the white top coat as there's a colour change as it's being applied, but you can hardly see the clear coat going on as he's doing it. Impressive!
Knowing where all the repair patches are, and still can't see them after painting is done, all I could really see was a few dings/dents, the one that stood out the most was on driver side quarter panel (between B pillar and rear wheel arch) @ 17:52 as the car is being turned around on the rotisserie. But in terms of rust repair I'm calling it, peak performance. You can't ask for better than that.

Depends on the materials used . Some coatings appear to me softer than others

will probably be overcoated with some sort of stone chip/ spray sealer i would have thought
Agree..worked on many car restorations (20 yrs)...Its not just stone chips, its body panel movement and heat expansion.
