Hi Mat. I had a problem with an ECU a few years ago. £700 for a replacement and nobody was prepared to check or look at the ECU. I gave it to a TV repair man as a last resort. He checked it and found that somebody had put the wrong polarity to it. It burnt out 15mm of track and blew a transistor. He resoldered the track and replaced the transistor. No other damage to ECU because the blown transistor prevented the current travelling any further. Total cost....£13.50.....brilliant.
Hi Mat, I am not a specialist but after watching M539 restorations, he's been always turning over the engine manually in all standstill cars to avoid engine damage and lubricate it rather than straight going straight to cranking.
Hell yeah, finally a more "affordable" car. These builds are almost as fun, but feel a lot closer to the general audience. Thanks Mat, keep up the great work!
Be careful running that engine without coolant, those 80s straight 6 bmw engines were prone to heads cracking, happend to my e30 325i back in the day! Can't wait to see this progress Mat! 👍
If I remembered anything from Sreten (M539 Restorations), you should never start a car which sat for a long time like this, rather, dump all the fluids, disassemble all you can and manually turn over the engine. I do hope there is no catastrophic failure with this one. It's a great project.
Mat I'm 55 years old and remember that car like yesterday .fella you got one of the best BMWs ever made and I fu..ing love it 💕💕.I really can't wait to see you do this one please keep it original🙏🙏👌👌👌

Absolutely love the shark nose E24. I’d love to find one and put a “modern” drivetrain like a M54B30, maybe turbo it and 6speed manual. I think it would make the car feel much more modern without being overly complex. Maybe once my 330ci is done.
I drive a 120d, 17 years old nearly 200 thousand miles. I love it. All electrics still work speakers are great and it has most cars off on the road. Like you said bmw you can't kill them. Great car to work on two years younger than me 👍
Hey I'm really glad you're doing an old car too. In 1995 I bought a 1976 BMW 2002tii in bright yellow. Heavy but quick. I drove it on Castle Comb and was featured in a classic car magazine. I had lots of mods done to it in Hastings but the monthly running and repairs were more than my mortgage. It broke down too often and I had a baby at the time and needed something problem free so I replaced it with a Sierra. Now I drive a mk2 AUDI TT. That baby is now 29 and can drive my TT. She lives in Berlin. And BTW I was one of the first people to ever drive a TT in Bavaria at the factory and in the countryside around Munich.
Apart from the E46, this is by far going to be your best build yet! I love the old E24 6 series. And I can't believe that you got a hold of a csi of all models! Jealous is a understatement
Probably the best car you have and coolest, plus it's from an era where BMW produced reliable cars, and not designed to fail like their newer stuff. The Achilles heel of these cars is the dreaded tin worm.
I'd been thinking for a while that it would be good to see you revive an old classic. Don't know whether it's in your plans or not, but would love to see the engine get a strip down and rebuild.
Fantastic Mat, when I was 20 (38 years ago) the company I worked for the owner had a 635CSI. He once let me collect it from the dealership after a service. Great car, great days and memories for me, it really was the dogs back then.
I can hear the fuel pump, waterpump, the correct manual is the dog leg left reverse getrag box... You will need a new flywheel to install and the trust bearing. Also change the timing chain and rails. The autobox is probably ok, just top it up and change the filter before you do the manual conversion. Some of these motors had a problem with crankahaft end float so the crankshaft pulley would shake itself loose. To bleed the cooling system its one 3rd coolant in that 12.8 litre system. Also check the airfilter and clean the idle valve using brake cleaner.
Dry ice in uk on a rot box and you expecting good results:)))))))) that car have to be stripped suspension replaced and powder coated is only one way to see clean finish.
Love this car! I remember back in Jamaica my dad's friend had one of these and it was the talk of the town. Great thinking on diagnosing the ecu fault. 👍 Keep the videos coming. Can't wait to see it restored.
You probably won’t read this through the amount of comments, but just a quick thanks. You have inspired me to have a crack. No mechanical experience other than replacing brakes and other minor services to cars. I have purchased for $1000 a 2007 Mazda 6 wagon diesel. Ending needs a rebuild and some needs a paint job. I will be working on this as my first real project . Wish me luck
my first car when i was 20 and knew not much about cars, it was 1989 E34 I fell in love with everything about it, including its elecrtical ancient wiring or striping down the entire body and putting it back together, this will be your favourite and i suggest keeping the automatic if you will daily it, enjoy bruh and I certainly will enjoy watching this.
Dang that's so awesome to see an old 6 series getting restored. I have a e30 of the same year with a similar story that I'm looking to start restoring soon so seeing your process definitely gives me ideas on where to start as well as motivation.
@@alexgreen3662 that's the plan, but with the cat market being as hot as it was I kinda put it on the backbones for cars that make money. Probably gonna do that this spring
Yes! My father use to own one when I was about 8 years old. Shouting “Faster! Faster!” from the passenger seat at my father, driving it like a madman. Please Matt, turn it in to an Alpina. Get in touch with Alpina HQ, maybe they have some parts from the ‘80’s left somewhere. 💪💪
I worked on those back in the 80s, quick old lump back in the day. Exhaust manifolds were prone to crack, and the cam-shaft oil feed pipe tend to clog which if not caught quick enough will screw the camshaft and rockers.
Mate, I've followed your journey with restoring cars to their former glory for quite some time now and for sure this will be my personal favorite projects that you will take on. Looking forward to seeing this beauty get restored!
WOW, JUST WOW! Magic project Matt, well done for grabbing yourself a very cool old skool BMW to bring back to life. Really looking forward to your adventures with the car. Loved the video, I had one of the first ones, living in Germany in 1984 I bought a 1978 same color manual, I was 20 years old. I had so much fun it officially started my racing career. I brought it back to the U.S. I hated to let it go in 1994. I've had almost every model, but I think I like that the best ,everyone I brought was fast, nothing slow for me. Put a Alpina turbo in it. I'm watching you guys
i think making the older motors with a modern touch would be class, I know the old boys wont like the idea but putting a dsg gear box, led lights and maybe digi dash would really spice things up and show people that don't look at old cars and think there's nothing there
I’ve always liked the idea of modernising old cars inside and leaving the outside classics look. But most people to prefer all classic interior too. This car is older than me, I’m surprised it has electric windows and seats. Wouldn’t need to do much to this, a digital dash would be epic.
@@krypla1 I more thinking of old shitty cars like a Peugeot 206 from 2000. Instead of going to the scrap, y not give people the opportunity to learn, maybe bring it back to life and give their in touch on it! Even with this e24 Matt is doing, there’s so much of it that’s retro which ain’t bad but nothing wrong with maybe swapping out colours of the leds or something like that lol
I have been watching you from the start Mat and love all the cars you have done - but this is special - absolutely love the 635 CSI - my absolute dream car! Can’t wait to see the upcoming content on this 🤪
Love the enthusiasm Mat for all things car. Not just doing the standard "look at my 1200hp Audi" that takes a few bolt on bits and no skill or learning or sending it off elsewhere to do. Only a recent subscriber when i came across the Aston Video but going through the back catalogue and its just your love of cars and pushing yourself to learn on them each time rather than relying on outside help like so many other YT channels. Loving the content. Loving the retro BMW stuff and keep it coming. Can't wait to see how this progresses.
This was brilliant, I was thinking from the off how you gonna do without an OBDII. That was a heck of a problem solve, loved seeing the books out. Shows what differentiates this from others. Hard work beats talent! Ah and what a car! Gonna love all the details that you'll show and excited for how you are gonna put your stamp on it! Props to you, Hannah, your mates, your support.
Strip the car, get rid of all rust, replace with all new parts or as many as needed, take the engine & gearbox out & rebuild them & repaint them,a few awesome mods, stiffen up the suspension, make it fast n loud & paint the car in a nice black with some refurbed black n silver wheels & a nice new interior from an M3 or something & it'll be bangin. Proper gangsterise it👍🏻
Absolutely great to see an older car repair. Similar challenges but the need to take a diff approach as no OBD and getting the books out. Moreover if parts not available and needing to think outside of the normal..such as creating bodywork templates etc.
You can make an absolute beast with this Matt... this is a ride where you can easily blend old with new... eg air ride, 3 piece wheels etc.. drop an M6 Engine in
Damn Mat, I wish your video's were longer! So good to watch, at this point I don't even think it matters what you work on, you have a solid subscriber in me man, keep up the good work, can't wait to see this project through!!!
This is literally my dream car ❤️❤️ wish I could afford something so speacial 🙌 super happy you have decided to give this a go, can’t wait for the final product 🍿 Super huge fan 🤙
Mat thanks for this, more updates on this one please! I had the 628 version in the late 80s and it was manual and silver metallic, fabulous car to drive and look at, miss her so much BUT the old maggot was setting in as you see here so sold and bought a 325i that I still run from 1999. I was told many years later that right hand drive 628s were rare, don't know about that but still miss her no doubt! Well done matey, keep up the great work!
Great cars! I owned a 635 CSI 30 years ago now, one of my favourites out of all the cars I’ve had since. Even back then they suffered rust after a few years and I had gearbox (4 speed switchable auto) problems, one issue was a speed sensor on the output of the gearbox, it’d put the car in to a limp mode. It wasn’t a bad auto and when these are running correctly they are quite a quick car. I had mine on a rolling road and it made the numbers ok.
If he manages to actually turn that car into something decent I will like double subscribe or something! Looking forward to seeing the transformation, let's go Mat! \,,/
Can't wait to see your baptism of rust. Welding to fresh air (as a hobby) has kept me amused for the last fifty years. Lots of dead-air spaces and raw box sections in a 6 series Beemer to cause many portions of the shell to dissolve in our cool and humid atmosphere. Does anyone do repair panels? You gonna need plenty before you can even think about mechanical mods. Best of luck.
I'm a newer subscriber but I've always loved those E24s. It is so 1980s. You might be able to get that old ECU rebuilt - it's always handy to have that as a spare on the shelf, should the eBay find one give up, as it is a 30+ year-old part! You'd be surprised the amount of 1980s electronics that can be rebuilt.
Wow. Just wow. BMW 635 CSI Highline...possibly the most beautiful of all THE BMW. Do it justice Matt, fantastic motor. Can't wait to see the next one 👍
Now we're talking Matt, I've loved your stuff all along, the E46 was probably my favourite but this is inspired. Bringing back old classics is the best and the 635 was a late teens dream of mine. Also....Chris de Burgh mentions this exact car in his song the Ballroom of Romance. It goes........I'm heading for the beach, in a BMW 635 going smooth at 90 feeling good to be alive. I'm going to love this build, brave new world, engines full of feathers and cobwebs :)
I found the first E24 video... and thought oh this is a year ago..... I'll watch the entire build.... watched 3 videos and then nothing.... I personally have a ton of projects I've never finished so totally understand. My 66 impala has been sitting in a garage since it was wrecked 25 years ago... love all the content.... hope to see this one finished before I finish mine lol which I'm not even working on so there is that
This is literally my dream build I've been looking at them for over 10 years and the prices have sky rocketed. What could get you a great condition example now will buy you a rolling shell! Can't wait to see what you do to this. It has to be bagged on BBS's there is no other way!
This was great. I really like the _"do whatever you have to do to get it working"_ method, because once you have it running you have a much better idea of what you do, and don't, have to do in the future. Looking forward to more videos on this one..
Hi Mat, with the OBD 1 port, in your Autel maxicom box there should be adaptors. In the top right corner of the right side you should see an adaptor that has a little sticker on it that says BMW and that might be the adapter you were looking for
Yeah, I think your theory is bang on - that kill switch should be on the positive and the wiring to it is definitely brown (live) - someone will definitely have wired the battery the wrong way round.
I'll be honest I Love your vision for the cars you fix up. because you always put alittle of "you" when you repair it, by adding alittle aftermarket parts to give it that OEM plus and then some. With that being said I'm beyond excited to see what you do with this E24!!!!! I have faith its going to be very worth it! cheers MATE!
Hey, i would fill your cooling fluid system,. The pump is running dry now. Don’t think that that is really good for it. And check the distributer cap and rotor inside for corrosion or wear. Nice job so far, you have a great car to repare! Keep up the work!
Love what you do mat ,I'm 58 great channel,, give top gear presenters a good run,,I think you should have your own series on one of the main channels,, great for us who can only afford to fix up I own dreams,, well done
I used to have one of these and it was fantastic, reg. no SEC111M, but recent searches suggest it too is now scrapped. But in in 1987 the RS500 came out and I p/ex the BMW, the Ford was an incredible beast at the time, put it never had the quality of the CSI. My 635 was manual with 1st on the dog leg, but for me (and we're all different), I think the auto would be my choice, so I'd only consider a gearbox swap if the auto proved to be faulty.
Mat, you are a very bad boy (LOL) . You cannot spent a week without a new CHALLENGE. The 635 CSI was a wonderful car. I dream a lot about this car and her sister the M 635 CSI with the M1 engine and 286 HP. I am surprised and happy to ear the engine running after all this time. We will see great videos when you will work on this 635 BMW. Thank you, MAT.
Ohh man! This is probably one of the most iconic bmw shapes, well done on getting this beauty, knowing your style, this will be an amazing build, cant wait!
Great car! I've owned my 1986 635csi 5 speed for over 10 years now. I absolutely love my car! Folks love to see it coming down the road & thumbs up abound everywhere I drive it!
Ohhh Yes.. Please do a full restore of that car. I would love to see you work on the rust-fixing yourself. Maybe tear the engine apart. This looks like it's going to be an epic rebuild.
my dad had 635csi from brand new , used to love going out in it , was one of the best looking cars on the road , i used to have E12 m535i was a quike car with dog leg manual gear box .... always wanted m635i with the 24 valve engine ...

Oh, them Schnitzer boys used to drag them Beemers down to Bathurst NSW Australia back in the day. A few locals ran them touring car 635 Csi too. Jimmy Richards had a beautiful black n gold one that shoulda been at a car show, not the track, it was so stunning. Won the touring car championship one year too. All class and im a local Ford nut..
Yess.. I hope you fix it good..! I own a 1986 635csi (red) US SPEC.. for the last 20+ yrs.. and still going..! Hope to watch a lot a videos of this one.! Keep the good work.!! Forgot my is a manual 5 speed.!!
This might be the only time where I might say I love a BMW, the old ones I would definitely buy but not too sure about the new ones keep the retro build coming Matt.
I have had two E28, 528i's from the early to mid 80's, the fuel pump relay was an big issue. There was a Vauxhall relay supplied by Lucas that was an identical match. Then on the 2nd car I bought the Bosch relay from the dealer and that lasted 5 months, they said it was a faulty batch!! you can hardwire the contacts, but that's so wrong as the fuel pump will always be running, got me home in a fix though!!
We just put a 1986 D reg xr4x4 sierra back on the road that had been sitting in our garage for the past 20 years. Much Easier to work on than new cars and needed very little....We are having the aircon on the sierra converted to run on the new gas....I'd keep anything of that age standard be worth more in the long run
Wow can't wait to see this progress. I have exactly the same car & am about to do a manual trans swap myself so your content will be invaluable. CHEERS!!
Please do a restore/OEM update. A more modern interior using BMW parts with some modern exterior parts i.e. parking sensors, more efficient lights, nice exhaust etc is just cool.
Oh man - what a motor! I was about 14 when this car came out and I remember loving them then. Really enjoy seeing you and Hannah working on things together. This is going to be such a fantastic build!

Can’t wait to see the upcoming content on this 🤪
Super excited to watch this series! Great to see you working on older and different cars, this one should be awesome!
Can't wait to see how this progresses.
i had one of these as my 1st car late 80s, had engine work done, over 300 bhp it would sit at 150mph all day, loved this car,
This was brilliant, I was thinking from the off how you gonna do without an OBDII.
Fair play to you for jumping in at the deep end with this one, really looking forward to seeing your progress with this 635
Really looking forward to this one Mat! Has to be a full resto mod! Perfect car to learn old school mechanics! Great content 👌
You can make an absolute beast with this Matt... this is a ride where you can easily blend old with new... eg air ride, 3 piece wheels etc.. drop an M6 Engine in
Lol
is the project still going????????????????
What’s happened to this car Matt
It's gone for body work an new 🎨 work
Can't wait to see your baptism of rust.
Just finished getting an engine rebuild on my 1988 635csi and added a little spice by putting in a 60mm turbo. The thing is an absolute rocket.
I love you’ve come back to a more achievable goal for us wanting to follow in your footsteps! 🙏🏼
Yes, when it's done it's a nice oldtimer! I own a E23 735i US edition.
Yes yes yes! Can’t wait for this series! Love a retro refurb! Nice to see a multimeter out and a electrics diagram!
I found the first E24 video... and thought oh this is a year ago..... I'll watch the entire build.... watched 3 videos and then nothing.... I personally have a ton of projects I've never finished so totally understand. My 66 impala has been sitting in a garage since it was wrecked 25 years ago... love all the content.... hope to see this one finished before I finish mine lol which I'm not even working on so there is that
Honestly one of my favorite cars.
In the top right corner of the right side you should see an adaptor that has a little sticker on it that says BMW and that might be the adapter you were looking for
Yeah, I think your theory is bang on - that kill switch should be on the positive and the wiring to it is definitely brown (live) - someone will definitely have wired the battery the wrong way round.
a friend of mine's dad designed this car - paul Bracq - it is a thing of beauty - glad you took on this project
By far , my favorite Bimmer of all time . I remember seeing a 633csi back in the day . A beautiful body .
Some time these cars might have an EWS issue preventing them from starting but glad you figured out the cranking issue and spark
We need an update on this please Mat. Like most of these comments, this is the one I look forward to seeing brought back to it's former glory.
plenty of updates on yorkshire car restoration channel
This car was my dream car in the 80's. Had a picture on my wall. Just loved it. Hope you get it up and running
Still remember my jaw drop when I first saw it when it was new. This shape doesn’t grow old. Still a head Turner. Love to see it fully done. Nice one.
Ohhh Yes.. Please do a full restore of that car. I would love to see you work on the rust-fixing yourself. Maybe tear the engine apart. This looks like it's going to be an epic rebuild.
I'm so happy you started this project! E24 is one of my favorite BMW's ever! Looking forward for the rest of the series
my dad had 635csi from brand new , used to love going out in it ,
was one of the best looking cars on the road , i used to have E12 m535i
was a quike car with dog leg manual gear box ....
always wanted m635i with the 24 valve engine ...
Congrats on the E24. You'll love it. Bulletproof engine. I've got one here in the U.S. Luckily I managed to get an European/model.
Hi matt. Well I have to say.. you always say you don't know what your doing...I can say mate you do very well. It seems you do your research and try every thing.. so we'll done mate.... I was an engine builder from cosworth .. in Northampton.. and you sure impress me ... I build engine yes but Im Not great with electrics.. but you definitely get stuck in...brilliant mate.. Regards Bob...
Now we’re talking Matt working on proper cars always wanted you to work on classics I love watching your fantastic skills and endeavour I also like watching Davide Cirone looking for an old Italian car restoring it modifying it then racing it you could have loads of fun and make more money selling them when finished good luck keep it up brilliant stuff 👍🏻✊🏻
Mate your face !! I love it … so happy !!
You’re like a top mechanic , but not a mechanic!! You’re amazing!!
As a young kid in the 80s my Dad had one of these i loved it great cars. Would love to own one one day.
Awesome. I’ve got a e32 and they are a dream to drive. You can’t kill the bulletproof M30
The m30 in the 635csi is a great platform to make some big power and do some interesting mods. Can basically go the big block bmw route.
Oh man - what a motor! I was about 14 when this car came out and I remember loving them then. Really enjoy seeing you and Hannah working on things together. This is going to be such a fantastic build!
You were lucky with that HT lead. I’ve seen someone sent to hospital after getting a whack from one while holding it. Not pleasant.
disconnecting water hoses and draining down is sometimes done on cars that are stored in winter to save buying anti-freeze
Indeed what a machine you have the right man Matt doing the body work
