What I find most hard to come to terms with are the differences in historical Egyptian borders and those referred to in the bible.
'Egypt' considered the whole of what we call Israel to be part of Egypt, so the whole reed/red sea shebang going out of Egypt doesn't sit right with me.
There were numerous outposts/forts all around the provinces of Egypt to largely ensure goods and wealth made its way back to wherever the treasury was for the reigning Pharoah, and a ragtag tribe of malcontents wouldn't have gone unnoticed by ranging scouting parties OVER FORTY YEARS?!!!
Large swathes of the bible feel like they were written JUST to corroborate or embellish narratives and histories that specific writers wanted to insert into the local historical record, which makes distinguishing the lies from reality a hard task.

Not just Scots but what about the Hundreds of Trade Caravans that regularly crossed these lands for over 1,000 years? Not one mention of a band of "Nomads" following "pillars of smoke" by day and "pillars of fire" by night anywhere, from anyone! One would think that the pillars of smoke and fire alone would be noted from a safety consideration or navigational purpose for Travelers.

The ones who wrote about the Sumerians , were the Assyrians and Babylonians , who were the direct descendants of those Sumerians , and they knew how to write their ancestors language ...
Those nations never left their ancestors faith , but the difference happened when in the year 722 bc , the Assyrians added stories to their faith , copied directly from the Torah , and today it looks like if the Israelites have copied from the so called advanced Sumerians , which the 2 Creation stories sound similar , but the Annunaki story is exaggerated with Paganism and the Babylonian system and ways of life ......
Followers of certain beliefs , have always added stuff on their own belief or religion , just like the believers of Sargon of Akkad did , where this same person lived a thousand years before Moses , but was discovered that his birth story which is similar to the one of Moses , was in fact just written down by Neo Assyrians in the Seventh Century bc , which those texts were found and verified to be really from the Seventh century BC , meaning nothing else was found before that , meaning that this text comes 800 years after Moses , so who copied who ?
Stories were added later in times , which today may confuse humanity , on who is the original text , and quite frankly , the Sumerians and Babylonian stories have Succeeded very nicely , in deceiving Humans

There is a Sumerian legend of a princess being put in a basket ,and floated down the river. There is also a story of a pharoah, who believed in one god only, was chased out of Egypt, with his followers, who then crossed the reed sea to escape.
New translations now claim that the red sea was mistranslated from reed to red sea

I would start with Richard Friedman, not because he is necessarily best, but because he is most nuanced and takes various ideas into account, and almost always in a logical way. He does seem a bit too tied to his religion, but overall he doesn’t let it ruin his scholarship.

I like to use the term Mosology. (I think I'm making Mosology up. I don't recall anyone else every using it.) You know, like Christology. The description of Jesus giving the Beatitudes in Matthew's Gospel is a Mosaic Christology. Jesus is the new lawgiver, the new Moses. The birth narrative of Moses is a Sargonic Mosology. The Jewish authors (not the Hebrew or Israelite nor an oral tradition) took whole cloth with some editorial desecration the birth narrative of Sargon and applied it to Moses in order to explain internally and externally who Moses was; "OK guys, it's like this; Moses is to us like Sargon is to them (internally) / you (externally). He's a guy of humble birth (kind of, possibly, maybe), chosen by Yahweh (or beloved of Ishtar, take your pick), who rose up to become the leader of his people and establish them as a nation." That's the way it seems to me.

Senenmut was the Historical Moses. He was a Hyksos who was found by Hapsetshut when he was a baby. It sounds like the Baby was given to Hapsetshut and became her Visor. He supposedly killed an overseer and fled into the desert never to be seen again.

Ramses was not the pharaoh of the exodus: his name is only applied to the locale (city of Ramses) it is anachronistic: so that the forgotten name of the city wouldn't be grounds for dismissal. Akhenaten was the pharaoh, he is known to be monotheistic, supposedly he just decided the "old Egyptian way" was best. (probably a smoke screen, meaning his conversion was due to Moses' victory, versus some older Egyptian creed) The 10 plagues can be computer modeled from the great Santorini eruption, most notably the fire mixed with hail and the killing of the 1st born due to low lying toxic gas released from the seismic activity, The first born customarily sleep on the ground floor in low lying cots. This kind of disaster has since happened at lake Nyos. This pushes the timeline earlier, negating archeological objections.

The actual history of the towns and lands in the regions is very interesting but all the fairy tale myths need to be seen only as seriously as the people themselves took them. Like all people around the world-they mainly needed myth and god(s) when it served their purposes. Day to day not so much…during a drought and starvation, when harried and hassled-it’s “dear gods save us!” And so it’s perpetually useful for narcissistic priests and prophets…

You really have to study Egypt and put the real history in focus. There certainly were semitic tribes in Egypt ... and they filtered out bit by bit. No mass exodus as described in the Hebrew Bible. No Slavery ... (unless you count the ones the Jews had) ... The early Jews were in fact Egyptians! They split off with their own religion sometime after Akhenaten's reign. Moses never existed. Campfire lore makes for powerful memories in children ... explaining to your little ones that you were rejected instead of leaving on mass as a bold new tribe, would be hard to say.

The name Moses being Egyptian means absolutely nothing. Egypt occupied and controlled Canaan for hundreds of years, including during the alleged period of the Exodus. Egypt had their own governors in place who they called "princes." "I think it's possible "Moses" might have been a general term for these Egyptian "princes," but even if that's wrong we would expect to see Egyptian names and Egyptian cultural influence on Canaan during this period. We still even have the remains of some of their palaces. Egypt was once the Rome of the world and they occupied Canaan just like Rome did. They had Egyptian governors just like Rome did. Bondage in Egypt" doesn't have to mean literally in Egypt. There are theories that the Exodus may have a social revolt within Canaan itself. Moses in the bull rushes is a mythological trope usually intended to imbue a person of seemingly low social status with secretly royal origins (Sargon, King Arthur), but in Exodus it seems like an attempt to turn an originally Egyptian hero into a secretly Israelite one.

Moses was an Egyptian who helped enslaved semites by smuggling small bands of them out of Egypt over many years. He died in the desert during one such operation. These groups later venerated him and claimed him as their own by creating the river/baby basket narrative. Moses actual political status within Egypt (if any) and why he chose to assist the semites is unknown.

Manetho is an extra biblical source that corroborates the story of Moses. As well as the pre-Israelite ancient Egyptian words, customs and locations accurately described in the Torah. Also Egyptian YDNA haplogroups in Jews and the Samaritan Kohanim. Moses is fake but Jseus is "real", Christians being Christians I guess. Abraham is from UR so cultural continuity with Akkad and Sumer isn't a big surprise unless you worship white Jesus.

Manetho is a problematic source of quotations in other works hundreds of years after he lived, which was at least 800 years or so after the supposed Moses, and his writing depicts Jews in very negative terms. Manetho himself is not a proven historical character but one disputed by scholars. There are no scholars using Manetho to claim Moses was real, just amateurs on sites like Ancient Origins. It would be more accurate to cite Manetho as the earliest ant-semite on record. DNA does not confirm anything other than who people had sex with at some point in their genetic history.

Ehrman is not a Christian, it seems you are commenting on someone you know nothing about. Maybe read a bit more of his work, like his blog to learn more. It will give you depth to his perspective.
2nd While I don't claim expertise as far as I can tell and even though I think we would all love to read Manetho's account - it seems even the people who used his works(e.g. josephus, eusabius), did not have access to the originals, and their accounts diverge, so it would seem that the works were altered and their accounts if what he wrote is not very reliable. As such we don't have a reliable source of Manetho's works. It would be great if we did. As for the history of the Hyksos, it doesn't appear that their history fits Josephus's efforts to make them the Israelites. Have a good day.

@@JacquesduPlessis11 I never mention the Hyksos. Nor did your response offset my points. There is extra-biblical evidence substanting an Israelite presence in Egypt. Western academia is built upon anti-semitic notions from christianity. No matter how accurate these writings were. They none the less commonly known and attest to Egyptian anti-moses propaganda by peoples who had nothing to gain in admitting moses existed.

It also bugged me how he just says a flat no and then laughs glibly. If you’re going to dismiss Manetho’s legitimacy then do so. Make your case. For that matter there are other Greek sources as well. I won’t argue that they’re reliable but guys like this make me question their honesty when they just straight up lie to make their jobs easier.

Ridiculous position: There was no Abraham, there was no Isaac, there was no Jacob, There was no Moses but there was DEFITINELY a Jesus? Special plead much Bart? I'd love to get a look at Erhman's contract/tenure agreement. I'm betting if he ever even suggests Jesus never existed either it is grounds for immediate termination from his college (and a blackballing of his career) I'd bet real money on it.

His insistence on the existence of an actual Jesus is annoying and, frankly, disingenuous. I came here because I saw one of their videos on tik tok, and was disappointed to see Bert all over the page.

While maybe not explicit to this point, the exchange at 8:15 seems pretty reasoned as to why- there are no external sources for Moses/Abraham. While the information about Jesus from external sources is pretty limited, it still seems far better than nothing.

That you seem to believe Jesus definitely does not exist (from your equal 50 years of historical scholarship?) is the laughable position here.
He's written dozens of books explaining his evidence and thoughts. Pick one up first.

Dr. Ehrman doesn't understand moses in Matthew. Matthew dipicts Jesus as the true moses, and the law of Jesus as the true law. Matthew doesn't propagate the fictive moses, but Jesus opposes the moses of the jews. "Your moses has told, but I say. In your law you read, but in reality..."
